Autochrome Lumière, The World's Earliest Color Film
Way before Kodachrome, and the now-classic Paul Simon song, there was Autochrome Lumière. Autochrome Lumière is a photographic process that revolutionized color photography in the early 20th century. It was invented by French brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière, who were already famous for their contributions to the film industry. Before Autochrome Lumière, color photography was a difficult and…

Alexander Palace, Tsarskoye Selo, Russia, 1917,
A rare and unique set of Autochrome color photograph plates, taken by Alexander Zehest in 1917 of the interiors of the Alexander Palace, including both the Parade rooms and the personal rooms of the Imperial Family.
The Autochrome process was a rare and difficult one, invented by the Lumiere Brothers of France in 1903 and marketed in Europe and the US starting in 1907. The autochromes, 140 in total, were made in 1917 by the military photographer Andrei Zeest, who was invited by the art historian George Loukomski, Head of Tsarskoye Selo Inventory Commission. The Alexander Palace interiors were photographed in August-September, soon after the Tsar’s family left for exile.

Simple Image Adjustments - Photoshop
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my first first image I found a dark black and white image of the Bethells Beach Club house. I used the curve mode to lighten the shadows of the image as I wanted to bring out some of the background, as well as slightly raising the brightness and lowering the contrast of the image.
I found that this image was already very black without many light points other than the building.

This image there is a simple lady eating off a plate, I found that it was too light and over blown out in some areas, for this I only changed the curves of the image to darken the shadows this gave more clarity to the plants and building.
It was difficult to find unedited black and white images online.

This coloured image is of two children playing in the water, the original is slightly washed out quite grey/blue. To correct this I changed the colour balance of the midtones - a little red and some yellow, then I raised the saturation and vibrance of the image this made the colours pop more rather than be washed out. Also added another layer of colour balance to add more cyan, a little magenta and more blue. This livened the blue back up again, kept the skin of the children pink.

My last image I picked a pink hued image. I wanted to create more contrast between the background and foreground. I did this by changing the colour balance adding a lot of cyan and a little yellow in my midtones and adding a little bit of red to the shadows. I increased my saturation by 50% and lightened some of the shadows with the curves tool. Lastly increased the saturation slightly to make the remaining picks pop.

one of my many interests
silent films. AHHH its just so cool? here are some facts!
the lumiere brothers invented the Cinématographe. the word cinema is derived from the word. They also invented the Autochrome lumiere, patented in 1903.
the autochrome was the first technique to use glass plates to colorize photos. the autochrome was was an additive color "mosaic screen plate" process that included potato starch and soot.. It was the main color photography process in use before the invention of subtractive color film in the 1930s.
when people would go to see a silent film, there would most likely be a live pianist there playing along with the screen. the pianists would often improvise in dramatic scenes, like the crescendo of music in a dramatic scene in films today. sometimes, someone would provide live dialogue.
acting in the silent films was a real art. because they could not use their voices, they often used larger than life expressions and body language. if you watch one now, the performance is often unrealistic and overdone in compared to movies today. however, almost immediately after the popularity of silent films people began to want more realistic expressions and acting. as the film quality grew better and better, the need for over the top acting and visual emotion was no longer needed.
the first films were shot with 12-26 frames per second. the people working the projector  would often receive instructions for silent films with cue sheets that would tell them at which points in the film they were to crank faster or slower, lowering or raising the fps.  Theaters could also request the films to be cranked faster at certain times of day, such as during matinees, when tickets were cheaper, so that the films would be shorter or could be worked into a tighter time slot.
title cards! ( or intertitles) first used in 1903. the good thing about title cards was it allowed the film to be watched and understood in any language, not only because of the lack of speech, but the title cards could be replaced with whatever language they chose.
*deep breath*
WHY IS AUTOCHROME QUALITY BETTER THAN MY 200 DOLLAR PHONE 90 YEARS LATER
ok back to facts
theda bara is an icon she basically caused the twilight craze in 1915. she was one of the most popular silent film actresses.one of her most popular films was cleopatra.  but  the last two known prints of Theda Bara's cleopatra  movie were destroyed in fires at the Fox studios (in 1937) unfortunately no prints of the movie exist anymore.
part 1??? let me know if you wqnt more
