still not over that one scene in hxh where Gon admits he’s been on dates with older women as a CHILD. i felt like Killua first watching that until he brought up that he had no time for dates cause he was out assassinating people.
my mind did a lag moment before i remembered that oh yea! they’re both traumatized! they did not grow up like normal twelve year olds!

HxH (1999) is such a vibe.
It does so much better at characterizing Gon. The 2011 version skipped essential exposition like Gon meeting kite for the first time and befriending the forest creatures (most importantly the foxbear cub) which set up Gon’s success as a Hunter and his initial desire to become one after hearing about Ging from Kite.
But the 1999 version was allowed to have filler, so you get to see more of Gon’s backstory leading up to him leaving for the exam. I think the 2011 version really missed out on the opportunity to develop Gon’s relationships and characters, and that hurts the story later on, especially in the Chimera Ant Arc when we see Gon devastated after Kite’s death. This only makes sense if you understand that Kite was Gon’s only connection to a father figure (either seeing Kite as the father figure or as a connection to Ging). But since the 2011 version skips over this important connection, Kite’s death isn’t as impactful as it should be.
I also really love how the 1999 version characterizes Mito and her conflict over Gon wanting to become a hunter. She’s more flawed in the older version in that she’s seen trying to manipulate Gon into staying by lying to him about Ging and lashing out at Gon whenever he mentions Ging or becoming a hunter. We also get to see Mito conflict over wanting Gon to stay but also not wanting to hold him back from his dreams. This stuff happens to some degree in the 2011 version, but it’s glossed over in a way that makes Mito look excessively reasonable and understanding. She doesn’t want Gon to become a Hunter, but she’ll never stand in his way. Even though the end result is the same in the 1999 version, Mito *does* try to prevent Gon from becoming a hunter and only concedes when his stubbornness wins over hers. This makes for a much more realistic mother/son relationship, in my opinion AND it introduces us to Gon’s stubborn/determined personality as well as his willingness to forgive easily.
Just, overall the 1999 version does a better job at showing each character’s inner conflict, whether that’s Kurapika choosing between revenge for his lost family or starting a new one, Gon struggling after he’s humiliated by Hisoka, or Mito wanting to keep Gon forever.

btw im watching ‘99 hunter x hunter, and i love how gon’s relationship with kite & mito is more fleshed out in the beginning, and it makes his motivations for finding ging more tragic.
