My Take on the Gwen Stacy and Peter B Parker Discourse

So I’ve seen a lot of hate towards these two characters, and especially Gwen Stacy (because as we are all aware, the internet tends to be much harsher towards female characters than their male counterparts), and so I thought I’d toss my two cents into the ring.

Please keep in mind this is just my opinion, if you disagree with me that's fine, but don't try to argue with me about it.

The main argument (from what I’ve seen) seems to be that Gwen and Peter A: didn’t visit Miles when they had the chance and B: Didn’t help Miles out despite the fact that Hobie, someone who had only known Miles for a few hours at that point, did. So let’s break it down piece by piece.

We’ll start with the first argument. This one I think is kind of dumb since it literally gets explained IN the movie? Gwen explicitly states that the spider society carefully tracks what dimensions she visits through her watch. She says that she really did want to come and visit sooner, but she would have gotten in serious trouble if she did.

If you'll remember, Miguel was incredibly hesitant to let her into Spider Society due to her connections to Miles in the first place, and we see that despite his reluctant acceptance of her, he was still incredibly wary of her and considered her a liability. So she was still on the fringes of Spider Society during the months that she was there. She was just a few missteps away from being kicked out and sent back to her dimension where, for all she knew, her FATHER WAS STILL WAITING TO ARREST HER.

I mean consider it from her perspective. She’s a TEENAGER who was just almost arrested by her own dad on suspicion of murdering her best friend, immediately after trying to be vulnerable with him by revealing her biggest secret. She was in a position where she felt that she couldn’t return home anymore because home wasn’t safe for her. And the only place that would take her in had a few very strict conditions on her being allowed to stay there, namely that she have no contact with her one and only friend. AND DESPITE THIS THREAT, she STILL disobeyed her orders and went behind the back of her mentor in order to visit Miles the SECOND she had a chance to do so. She cares about Miles SO MUCH, to the point that she would risk her only refuge just to be able to see him again.

As for Peter B? Are we all forgetting that this man was raising a BABY in the time between the two movies? That man is bound to be EXHAUSTED all. the. time. And even without considering that, he was likely treated with the same wariness that Gwen was due to his connections with Miles as well. It’s not unreasonable to assume that he had the same restrictions as her.

Moving on, the second point is that they didn’t help Miles when Miguel trapped him and then sent the entirety of Spider Society after him. This one, I feel, has a bit more weight to it. But when looking at everything altogether, I’d still argue that this one isn’t true either.

Because let’s think about it for a second. Everyone in Spider Society (with the exception of Hobie), including Gwen and Peter, are under the impression that these “canon” events are literally the only thing holding the multiverse together. By that logic, they WHOLEHEARTEDLY BELIEVE that if Miles breaks the canon, the ENTIRE MULTIVERSE is going to come crashing down around them.

People say that when Miguel tried to trap Miles, nobody but Hobie tried to help him out. But the thing is, Peter and Gwen DID try to help. It’s just that their idea of helping Miles looks very different from Hobie’s (and subsequently, our) idea of helping him. You can HEAR them both audibly protesting to what Miguel is doing all throughout the chase scene, trying to calm him down and keep Miles from getting hurt because this is NOT what they talked about. But keep in mind that while this is happening, they still believe that Miles’s dad HAS to die for the sake of the canon. So in their minds, they’re trying to keep Miles safe from Miguel while also trying to keep the multiverse safe from MILES. They really think that miles possesses a threat to the stability of the multiverse, and they’re trying to protect him anyways. Which is why it makes no sense to me that people try to argue that Gwen and Peter didn’t care about Miles in the movie.

Even back at the beginning, when Miles is first introduced to Miguel, both of them stick up for Miles the best that they can within their current belief system. They both immediately try to shield him from Miguel’s anger by saying that he can’t be blamed for his actions because he is uninformed and poorly prepared, and thus didn’t know the consequences his actions would have.

And of course I hear people saying that it’s not enough, that they should have broken away from Spider Society entirely, and while I’m not saying I DISAGREE, I am asking you to remember that Gwen is still under threat of returning to what she believes to be an unsafe environment, and Peter actually has something to lose now, that being both his wife and his daughter. Even if they did see through the flaws in Miguel’s logic, which if we’re being entirely reasonable here NONE OF THE OTHER SPIDER PEOPLE DID EITHER, they both have things that they aren’t willing to risk on the off chance that Miguel is wrong after all, especially when they have both seen the fallout of what happens when the “canon” breaks.

And I don’t want to hear a WORD of people calling them selfish for trying to look after their own interests either, because then you’d have to call MILES selfish as well. After all, MILES is the one risking the entire multiverse just so that he can save his dad. I'm not saying that he's WRONG to do so, but keep in mind that the characters in the movie don't have the same information that we do.

But then what about Hobie? As I said before, Hobie’s idea of helping Miles looks very different to Gwen and Peter’s. This isn’t necessarily a matter of one party being right and one party being wrong, (although we as the viewers know that there IS a right and wrong just by virtue of knowing that Miles is the protagonist of the story), it’s a difference in perspective.

Hobie is very firmly anti-establishment. Because of this, he already views the Spider Society through a more critical lens than the other spiders. As such, he has a much easier time poking holes in Miguel’s logic, because it’s always easier to spot something’s flaws when you are actively looking for them. He’s clearly not a fan of Miguel and his strict, authoritarian leadership because it’s against everything he believes. The only reason he’s even in the Spider Society at all is to ensure that he can look out for Gwen and Pav, and he quits immediately after helping Miles out. He’s also rebellious and, from what we see, doesn’t have something to lose like Gwen and Peter do, which makes him more willing to take the risk that comes with helping Miles.

All of this isn’t to say necessarily that what Peter and Gwen did was OKAY. Believe me, I still believe that they messed up BIG TIME. Miles had every right to feel hurt and betrayed over this. That’s kind of the whole point of the movie. But what I am saying is that people seem to forget some of the context in which these decisions were made. It's important to put them back into context, because people are purposefully misinterpreting these characters so that it fits this narrative they've constructed in their heads which completely misses the whole point of the film.

I know there are other things that Gwen in particular does (which I am skeptical about because once again: misogyny) that make people mad at her. I mean I haven’t even gone into the whole “love square” thing that’s IMPLIED to be going on between Margo, Miles, Gwen, and Hobie. But this isn’t about me trying to defend those more minor transgressions. This is about me trying to offer my perspective about the MAIN source of conflict both within the movie and the fandom.

You are of course welcome to disagree with me on any of these points, but I ask that you don’t try to start an argument with me over this. This is not me trying to invite discourse onto my blog, I’m simply sharing my own opinion since I really love the movie and it irks me to see people talking about these characters the way that they do.
