Before we move on in our survey of geared turbofans that will bring us to the Lycoming ALF 502 of the BAe-146 and the new PW1000G, let’s take a side trip from the Turbomeca Aubsique engine to another Turbomeca geared turbofan that did not reach production, the Astafan. I previously posted that the canceled Aerospatiale A.904 STOL airliner was to use a variable pitch geared turbofan called the M45SD that was based on the M45 engine used on the VFW614 airliner. A variable pitch front fan is exceedingly rare in jet engine technology- the M45SD was bench tested but never flew. But the Astafan did fly. On two different aircraft. The Astafan was based on the Astazou turboprop which was used on many aircraft of the 1960s and 1970s but most notably on the early versions of the Handley Page (later BAe) Jetstream. The Astazou first flew in 1957 and was used in both turboprop and turboshaft applications. It was easy to fit a gearbox to the Astazou core sized for the variable pitch front fan to create the Astafan. On the lower schematic, I’ve highlighted the location of the Astafan’s gearbox. Turbomeca tested the engine on two Rockwell Twin Commanders that had the piston engines removed but fairings for the main landing gears. The Astafan engines were slung underwing from pylons. Compared to turbojets of similar size, the Astafan was quieter and more fuel efficient. It first ran in 1969 but never reached production. The machinery for both the front fan gearbox and the variable pitch fan made the engine heavier than comparable designs and there were concerns about the complexity of maintenance. The only other aircraft to fly with the Astafan was the Fouga 90 which was planned as a modern successor to the Magister jet trainer. First flying in 1978, the Alpha Jet was selected instead of the Fouga 90 for the Armee de l’Air’s jet training requirements. Only a single Fouga 90 was built. The joint effort bore fruit after over 150 hours of flight testing and 109 test flights, leading to the equipping of each aircraft with two Pratt & Whitney PT6A-62 turboprop engines and Hartzell four-blade propellers.

The Pucará Fénix, formerly a ground-attack aircraft, is now intended for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) missions. This shift towards modern surveillance functions contrasts with the attack role of the rest of the Pucará fleet.
The project includes a complete modernization of the cockpit and avionics systems, the addition of air conditioning systems, and the removal of obsolete components. The Pucará Fénix thus becomes the platform for the progressive development of the ISR POD, with enhancements such as AESA active antenna radars and EO/IR sensors envisioned in future configurations.
The remotorization certification of the Pucará Fénix represents a significant advancement in modernizing Argentina's aerial arsenal. By pivoting towards ISR capabilities, Argentina is adapting its military equipment to the current demands of defense and surveillance operations.
The development of the IA-58 Pucará, initiated in August 1966 by the Argentine Air Force (FAA), aimed to create an aircraft suitable for close air support (CAS) and counter-insurgency (COIN) missions. The first prototype, named AX-2 Delfin, equipped with 904 hp Garrett TPE331I/U-303 engines, made its maiden flight on August 20, 1969. "Pucará", meaning fortress in the Quechua language, was later fitted with French Turbomeca Astazou XVI G engines in other prototypes.
Constructed entirely of metal, the IA-58 is designed to operate in light guerrilla conditions, with an armored cockpit and windshield and landing gear suited for unprepared runways. It is notable for its ability to take off in just 80 meters using JATO rockets and is designed for simple maintenance. This two-seater is equipped with Martin-Baker Mk 6AP6A zero/zero ejector seats.
The serial version IA-58A, or Pucara Alpha, first flew on November 8, 1974, and was delivered in 1975 to the III Air Brigade, with 108 units built until 1986. The IA-58B, or Pucara Bravo, featured 30 mm DEFA 553 cannons and improved avionics but was built in only one example. Similarly, the IA-58C (Pucara Charlie), a single-seat version with a HUD, IFF, and additional hardpoints, was built in only one example. Finally, the IA-66, equipped with more powerful Garrett engines, was also produced in a single example.
The IA-58 Pucarás were deployed by Argentina during the Falklands War, where, despite their numbers, they were unsuited against an adversary like the British, suffering heavy losses mainly on the ground. They did, however, manage to shoot down a Westland Scout. After the conflict, 11 aircraft were captured by the British, including 4 in flying condition, and 6 are now displayed in museums.
With the emergence of more advanced technologies and the evolution of military requirements, the Pucará began to show signs of obsolescence, particularly in its engines and avionics systems. In response to these challenges, the Pucará Fénix project was launched, aiming to modernize the aircraft through remotorization with Pratt & Whitney PT6A-62 turboprop engines and the update of avionics systems and propellers. This renewal has also led to a significant shift in the aircraft's role, transforming it from a ground attack aircraft to an ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) platform, suited to contemporary needs for reconnaissance and surveillance. The Pucará Fénix is now envisioned as an evolutionary platform, capable of progressively integrating cutting-edge technologies such as AESA active antenna radars and EO/IR sensors, thus marking its transition to a more sophisticated and strategic role in the Argentine military.

By the time they both presented, they knew that their friendship had turned into something more and it didn’t take long before the two of them began to take the next step, turning their friendship into a relationship, and it wasn’t long after that that they mated at the age of 23. But it was around this time that whispers of dissent was being mirrored by both of their packs, and upon learning he was with child, Lysander urged his mate to leave with the others for a better life. Not just for them, but for the child that they both had.
Leaving with the packs to join Athos had been a great idea. Though pregnant, Lysander did what he could to help build the new village from the ground up – quite literally – and he worked until he popped, birthing their first son. Even with the little one, though, he still worked. Wood-working and building something from nothing was his passion, and he loved seeing the look of joy cross someone’s face upon seeing a new home for their budding family or a child-sized bed for their growing pup. And Syrus was integral in ensuring that the livestock that they brought with them from the royal city survived and thrived, and he knows that it was Syrus’ expertise with the animals that allowed them to blossom and grow into the herd they had today.
Now he and Syrus are happy and content in their lives. Lysander is one of the chief builders in the village and his mate is now third-in-command in his pack, a feat of which he’s ever proud of, and their three children are all grown. Well, just about – their youngest, a sixteen year old, has yet to present, but they know that soon he shall be leaving the nest like his eldest brother and older sister. Part of Lysander wonders if it’s too late for him to bear another child, knowing that Syrus had wanted a big family, and part of him wonders if Syrus resents the fact that they hadn’t had more children.
That would be his only regret, really, but he hopes on Mother Wolf that there’s more time.

EVENT 01: FOUNDERS DAY
In celebration of the day, twenty years ago, when three packs from Egrain left the corrupt royal city to form their own community, all wolves gather to rejoice in the freedom that they have and celebrate their independence from the crown. Wolves are not required to partake in their chores for the day and instead can simply revel in the celebrations that take place - enjoy the beverages that are brewed by the tavern workers (or bought by the tradesmen), the food that has been cooked by the cooks, or even sit around the bonfires and reminiscence about the early days of Athos and how far we’ve come.
There are even competitions to take part in, ones that won’t warrant you any specific prize but will be giving you bragging rights, and you can partake in either a solo venture or a group one. There are three categories in these competitions - hunting, trapping, and fishing - and while you may not win a prize, everyone can rest easy knowing that if they compete and they manage to get something, it will only help to better the community and be added to the food that everyone consumes.
This event will take place starting today at 12 PM EST (now) and end on Wednesday, February 8th at 12 PM EST - however it is all, technically, taking place upon one day.

Even the isolation of Kara’s alpine retreat could not prevent incoming phone calls from the Tower, with its boosted signal power meant to be able to reach anyone, anywhere. Kara answered her phone with a mouth full of seven-layer lasagna.
“Hi, Alex,” she mumbled, continuing to chew enthusiastically.
“Charming,” Alex said at the noises coming from Kara’s mouth. “Hey, can you come to the Tower? We have a situation we could use you on.”
“Ummmm,” Kara said, swallowing her mouthful of food and glancing over at Lena. “I’m sort of. . . out of town.”
“What? Kara, I just saw you this morning, where are you?”
“I’m kind of, um, at the lake house.”
“The lake house? Why would you be. . . ? Wait. Is Lena with you?”
“She might be.” Lena met Kara’s gaze with a chuckle.
On the other end of the line, Alex sighed heavily. “Okay. I’ll tell the crew we’ll have to get by without you both for a few days.”
“No, Alex, there’s no need for that. It’s just an overnight thing. We’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Kara.”
“What?”
“No, you won’t.”
“What do you mean? Why wouldn’t we be?”
Several hundred miles away, Alex just laughed.
“Alex, we will!” Kara protested.
“Well, I have a crisp $100 that says you are completely full of shit. Want to take that bet?”
Kara pursed her lips. “Yes?”
“K, see you next week,” Alex said. “You two stay hydrated.”

c/n 1958 Built 1967 for the Belgian Army where she flew with the serial A41 and the callsign OT-ACB. She joined the museum in 2008. The Helicopter Museum Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, UK 2nd October 2020 The following information is from The Helicopter Museum website:- “Originally developed as a four seat piston-engined helicopter, the Alouette 1 first flew in 1953 but was soon completely redesigned to take advantage of the new turboshaft engine. Pioneered by Joseph Szydlowski, founder of the French company Turbomeca, his new 360shp Artouste engine took advantage of the jet engine principle, adding a shaft to the basic concept to drive the helicopter rotor system. As the SE130 Alouette 2, the new helicopter first flew on 12 of March 1955 and in 1956 became the first turbine-powered helicopter in the world to enter production. Almost immediately one of the first aircraft carried out the world's first high altitude mountain resuce, evacuating the victim of a heat attack from a 4,000m high plateau in the French Alps on 3rd July 1956 The extra performance available revolutionised the use of the helicopter, particularly in hot countries and mountainous regions and versions of the Alouette 2 were soon setting world records, including an initial altitude record in 1958 of 10,984m (36,131ft). In 1972 one variant, the SA315B Lama, established a new aboslute altitude record for helicopters of 12,442m (40,820ft) on 21st June 1972. The official record still stands today In 1961 the SA3180 (later SA318C) variant was introduced with the more powerful Astazou engine and the type continued to be manufactured until 1975. 1324 Alouette 2s were built over the 20 years it was in production. The aircraft on display is an SA318C, built in 1967 and previously operated by the Belgian Army in the reconnaissance, communications, medivac and training role. It was delivered to the Museum on 19th February 2008.

Raised on the streets of a merchant town near the border of Rürien after his mother’s death, the only life he knows is that of a thief. Quick handed and light footed, Dhest becomes infamous for his skills and even more for his evading capture, leading some with coin and greed to spare to seek him out with the intent to hire.
But luck is a fickle friend and fate, it seems, has its eyes on Dhest.
A failed heist that ends in betrayal uproots the entirety of the life he’s built. Forced to leave the only home he’s known, Dhest finds himself on the road with only the clothes on his back, a dragon for a companion, and a troubling realization:
Fate is not done with him yet.
