hello!! i have a few questions abt barnard heh. what made you choose barnard over the other seven sister schools? were you a part of the barnard bound program? do you know how many ppl get accepted to that program? and do you by any chance know the likelihood of getting accepted early decision to barnard if someone got accepted to barnard bound? lastly, how popular is the environmental science and policy department? thank you!!
Hey! First and foremost, I am so sorry that it took me so long to respond. The last week has just been pretty crazy.
I applied to Wellesley and Bryn Mawr in addition to Barnard (as far as women’s colleges/Seven Sisters goes). The main pull for Barnard, for me, was the fact that it was a big city as opposed to being on the periphery of one. Wellesley and Bryn Mawr are both beautiful schools, but having grown up on the periphery of The Big City™ (NYC), I knew I wanted to be in one as opposed to being just outside. Wellesley and Bryn Mawr are both probably half an hour from their respective cities (SUPER rough guess, I’m not that familiar with the Boston/Philly areas). Wellesley and Bryn Mawr are in consortiums/exchanges with co-ed schools, but it seemed like it would be more difficult to take classes elsewhere if I went to either of those colleges. At Barnard, I can take literally any class I want at Columbia (except it’s hard to get into their Core classes, which I didn’t really want to take anyway) and roll out of bed ten minutes before class and still get there on time.
Tl;dr, I wanted the city-dweller/college student experience and I wanted to be at a women’s college but also still have the presence of a co-ed school/co-ed classes.
So I did not participate in Barnard Bound when I was a senior (didn’t know it existed), but I went to a similar program at Rice University (SOAR), and from my understanding, SOAR’s acceptance rate was lower than both the early decision and regular decision acceptance rates at Rice. A number of schools have these types of programs, so I’d guess they’re all similar. Most people who participated in SOAR were also admitted to Rice (I didn’t apply ED so I don’t know if there was a difference for ED/RD applicants), though one does not guarantee the other. If you don’t get offered a spot at Barnard Bound, don’t worry! It’s a program targeted for people who are coming from far places (so I would guess Barnard would give priority to those from outside the Tri-State area/the Northeast) who would not otherwise be able to come visit.
As for environmental science, I’m not totally sure since none of my friends happen to be in that department, but in the 2018 graduating class, there were 44 poster presenters for the enviro senior thesis (which I think would be most, if not all, of the environmental science majors, but truthfully I don’t know). There’s also environmental biology and environment & policy, which are two different majors, but I imagine they have overlap with the environmental science department. Here is a link to the department website. I hope this helped!
Edit: I re-read your question just know and realized you asked specifically about environmental policy. If you click the link and look under majors, environmental policy has its own section. I believe it’s under the environmental science department, but it’s its own specific major. If you have any more questions, you can email askastudent@barnard and an environmental science/policy major can probably give you more info!

I never had a phobia of skeletons.
What I found....just made me take a dislike to them.
But in my line of practice , you sometimes have to deal with them. So having a phobia of them is unacceptable.

Good afternoon. I have been admitted to Life Sciences to start in fall 23. I would like to proceed to Medicine after graduating but I find Biomedical Engineering also interesting. Please advise what steps I should take to keep my options open (and strong) to be able to transfer to Biomedical Engineering after the first year. Many thanks in advance.

Hi aska, its me again (UTSC transfer) and I was also considering the Conservation EEB to take with PoliSci, but the only summer course offered is BIO120 first subsession (emailed bio120 office and they said I could take it even without gr 12 bio), what are my chances of getting past the waitlist? EEB125 is also only offered in the fall, do you think I could catch up and still graduate in 4 years or should I just go with English as my second major? Tysm

hey, i was the international student who sent in the ask about applying to social sciences even with a very low midterm math grade. kindly disregard my previous ask since we now have an update: not only did i get in, i also got the international merit award (somehow!) it's still a lot of money, though, and my parents are kinda reluctant to send me though i really want to go 😓 for my question: is it in any way possible that i will get additional/different scholarships that could maybe offset the tuition a little more? thanks a lot!

Hi Aska,
This may seem out of bounds from the usual questions you receive but do you know every graduation hood colour for each faculty? I feel like there isn't a website that has a comprehensive list, and if you do a Google search online, you can only guess a few if they explicitly write that this colour matches a certain faculty. I'm just curious to know if this is a thing...
Thanks!

Hey! I got accepted into Life Sci but I'm having some serious second thoughts... I'm not sure if I wanted to major in something science related but I really want to go to UofT, so now I'm stressing over courses. I feel like everywhere I look, I get vague answers, so I was hoping I could recieve a clearer one here :/ are there required courses in first year that are related to the area you're admitted into, or can you just take whatever prereqs a major has (within arts and sci)?

Hi. I am retaking MH4U1 (12 Advanced Functions) and SCH4U1 (12 Chemistry) in private school. I already got a conditional offer from UTSC in neuroscience, but was wondering if it hamper the decision later on? UofT websites are not that clear on repeating courses.
