Optimus, Rod...y'all. I know part of the joy of this comic is how messy it all is but there's something real weird to me about Optimus sitting in judgment of Megatron of all people. Like it makes sense that Rod's all, well, this:

Back to that symbolic/cruel thing I see. But also, Megatron more than anyone has the perspective to understand what Whirl was at the time (where I don't really see the same kind of wisdom in Whirl, who is better at perceiving other people's fears in what feels like an attempt to distract from his own) -- someone also at the end of a social rope with few options doing what he was told. Doesn't change it but, it is interesting. I'm very tired. I need to be more awake for this.

Oh neat a horror episode
What the dick is quantum foam. Sounds like something you'd find at Lowes.
OKAY BUT THIS HAS BEEN BOTHERING ME. Megatron is a poet, obviously there are playwrights and artists and shit, we know that functionalism is very very stupid, like Owl House Coven levels of stupid. But were there ever art bots. Poet bots. Is anyone's alt a typewriter. Or is it like in humans, where artistic expression like song, dance and art are behaviors that everyone can do.
"Anything can be replaced"
Yknow, one of the things I have enjoyed immensely about this comic is that the big ideological issues theyre having problems with are ridiculous. In a lot of media there's this "justified" oppression trope that @fernacular has a lot more interesting thoughts on--but the idea is more or less that sometimes the analogy the writers are trying to get at fails because the oppression is rooted in some kind of Real Reason. In Zootopia there is history between predators and prey in that predators DID used to eat prey. In DA, baby mages can explode into village eating nightmare demons at random, which justifies the local's fear of magic in general.
Here? All the stuff about constructed cold, forged, MTOs, functionalism--its as stupid as real-life racism, in that it's a made up story that is contradicted by reality. Here, its like, God made you a car or whatever, or a helicopter. You can't be anything else. In fact, it is a SIN to try to be!
And yET. ANYTHING can be replaced! And all of these bastards are so old, they've Ship of Theseus'ed themselves to hell and back. Anyone still alive. Its stupid on its face and thats with intention. Like the Horrors of War, this comic takes a grindingly real approach to concepts of the sacred, the profane, and the self.
I was talking to @polyhexian on the way to work today and another thing that popped up in this respect was the relationship these bots have to their sense of who they are. "Their bodies are so transitional. Anything can be replaced". And this is also a comic that, incredibly, about near mono gender asexual robots has a ton to say about things like rape, the sacred nature of the body vs its condition as worthless garbage--with both of those things being held in contention alongside each other.
Just like humans.

Something about this merciful understanding of the self combined with the absolute ridiculous and heavy handed management here is insane to me, like using a really big frying pan to cook ONe egg. But NO ONE, least of all Rodimus is firing on all cylinders theyre all so Broken--and that's without the funny screechery. Theyre all...doing their best I guess and theyre all absolute brutalized wrecks operating from a set of protocols developed in active, horrifying war zones. Makes for a great story and really compelling and funny right off but combined with the hyperviolence and British humor its also VERY SAD
OH SAME--
Oh what a cool way to represent going through the memories...I'm never going to be over how wild the art in this thing is am I.

MTMTE Liveblog Issue 1
Block the ash liveblogs MTMTE tag if you do Not want to see my insane, reactive ramblings. For context I know nothing outside of vague childhood memories of Beastwars, the horrible Bay movies, that one Bumblebee film and a lot of extremely patient and gentle context explaining from @fernacular and @polyhexian that I am frankly too scatterbrained to remember well or in order. HOWEVER. HERE WE ARE. AT LAST. For the two fuckers responsible: GRRR!
Okay. Rodimus is insane as promised. I see. I fully believe these are the fuckers who survived the apocalypse. Absolutely terrible people, all.
Thee are some of the funniest character establishing moments Ive ever seen. Oh everyone is so completely messed up.
Whirl! I remember you from the Tales. Oh god he's much much bigger than I thought--maybe because hes chicken shaped I kind of expected him to be littler oh god

This comic feels so...weirdly well put together. Like the people working on it really liked and worked well together. Such a strong unity of vision.

This is just really nice sci fi writing. I'm coming into this very cold and for all me yelling and screeching about What X or Y is the text and visual and dialogue does a really good job of communicating those things without going into he exhaustive detail I hassle out of my friends

What can and cannot be replaced, what's considered worse than a mortal wound vs the way that exile and punishment is externalized--like Empurata. Huh.

I havent enjoyed a traditional comic in a while and I really love how the medium is used to its fullest to move reveals like this along, this is delightful

And now I'm crying again. I'm just. Drowning in snot over here. Okay. Okay. I am genuinely blown away how this, out of context, would be damn near illegible, but with a little context is horrifying, touching and heartbreaking. He's speared through, Rung is over here genuinely a little touched, jesus christ on a pogo stick.
Okay, not that this is ever relevant to anything and there is more transformers stuff to watch than I could finish in a month of vacation, if I was in charge of anything I'd probably pull Whirl audition sides from this scene--or at least some of them--because even just meeting the character through my friends and these early issues, one of the most compelling things about him is that really interesting tension between his sincerity, humor, gurgly dying delivery and cold intensity. It's really interesting. The artists here use a lot of composition and context and light to make whirl emote and it's such a cool artistic challenge they solve over and over again.
Although in that vein if I was doing any casting of voice stuff for a MTMTE anything I think it'd be essential to cast a bunch of weird character actors, shakespearians and people who had video game experience.

This comic is so insane. Like very little about this seems to pretend to be anything like the stuff that spawned it. It's a transforming toy! And now, fast forward, were talking about the Horrors in an depressing, fully grounded way from the voiceboxes of colorful robits languishing in the post-horizon of a war that destroyed their whole worlds.
Im obsessed with these colors. And the image of all these damn robits around a PYRE. It's so weirdly, awkwardly human and this all just looks so vulnerable and lost. All their weird boxy shape against the organic swirls of fire.

Like, I also read in a fevered state of new-job-induced anxiety, feeling the most ignorant I've felt in over a decade. My brain was so waterlogged with New Information and Making Ignorant Mistakes that I genuinely could not figure out if I was missing something crucial in the beginning.
Why the fuck did Whirl attack Cyclonus when he stumbled across him mid-suicide attempt?

At first I'm like oh, I must be misunderstanding and then later I realize oh. Oh. OH. Okay, I get it now. They're all Mentally Ill.
Like on the one hand its so so funny but on the other with the hindsight it is HEARTWRENCHING because you can see how the stories are going to connect and how they were set up. And the aching question of "are we just completely unhinged as as species" or did they become like this? Does it matter, when only the worst of your species has survived the apocalypse and you're here on a floating frat boat that blew up the second it got airborne trying to contemplate the *future*?
