There it was again. You weren’t familiar with the artist or the song this time, but half-way through your math test you were hit with whatever your soulmate was listening to. You were used to it - music coming on at the worst time sometimes, sometimes waking you up at the least expected times. But it was fine at times - the thought that you had a soulmate to share music with was warming, even with everything it came with. Normally, you’d have slipped your own headphones in if the song wasn’t good and turn on something else a little louder than your soulmate’s music. If they didn’t like it, they’d usually end up turning their music up a little louder, and eventually it’d be a little battle until one or the other turned off the music. But you were in the middle of a test and you didn’t need to fail it, so you let the song continue as you scratched out another answer.
Then it switched. They were playing something you actually enjoyed - probably because you played it after hearing it from your soulmate and sometimes it’d end up in the mix of songs they’d listen to. Your leg started to bounce slightly to the music, and you attention slipped from triangles into the lyrics. Damn it. You didn’t need this. You’d find your soulmate and punch them for all the times they played songs associated with memes when you were in the middle of a test.
Then there’s another change, half-way through the song. You frowned a little - it was just getting to the good part, what the fuck? - but look back to your test. Soon you’d be done and free for the afternoon. Soon.
    There’s a pause.
You’re gonna punch your soulmate for rickrolling you again.
Michael was used to music wars with his soulmate - heck, he kinda liked them because it was kind of cute. He didn’t know much about his soulmate, but he knew a lot about their taste in music, which told something about them. So he knew how to annoy them from time to time - nothing serious, but turning on a certain Rick Astley song at random points would almost always result in his soulmate blasting another song in response. It was a way to get attention, and only hours earlier the way had failed.
So while Jeremy was off getting food, he tried it again. He turned it up slightly and played, smirking a little.
Then he heard another song, slightly louder and clashing with “Never Gonna Give You Up” - but it was there. He turned up the song slightly more. And then the other song turned up. He winced at the melding music as he clicks his phone twice - two more bars of volume popping up on his screen. Before his soulmate could move, he turned it up a bit more, looking around.
Then he saw someone rip out their earbuds the same moment the music disappeared. He turned the song down, pausing it as he stared. Weird coincidence.
So he played another song. One he’d heard countless times. The stranger smiled a little. Then he turned it off. The smile fell.
    It was worth a shot.
Michael glanced back to Jeremy, who was still waiting in line, before pushing the chair back and leaving the table as he wandered over to the person he’d seen before.
You swirled the straw in your drink absentmindedly. You’re gonna fight your soulmate the day you meet them., and you know it. Fucking asshole blaring Rick Astley and then teasing you with a good song - that sounded like the sort of shit Aaron would laugh at. Maybe you’d tell him when he got back with Sophie. He seemed like he was having a shitty day-
   “Hey.”
You looked up, only to be met with the sight of a boy around your own age. You forced a smile. Great. You’re alone and some guy’s approached you. “Hey.”
He reached up to the headphones around his neck, adjusting them slightly. Your smile fell slightly - just say what you need and get it over with.
   “You alright-”
“I think you’re my soulmate,” he blurted out. He then caught the look on your face, “fuck, sorry, that came out-”
“You got proof?” You shrugged, leaning back. If he wants to say shit, then he can back it up.
He nodded slowly. “Play a song.”
You shrugged and put in a earbud, “dude-”
“Just - any song. I, uh, need to know-”
“Alright.” You scrolled through, trying to find a song that maybe this guy would know.  And so you played “Fireflies” - the first thing that came to mind, and well known enough that most people could rattle off the title. You practically shielded your phone from his eyes, not giving him a chance to sneak a look.
But the little smirk on his face is what grabbed you. He knew.
   “Well?”
   “Owl City’s pretty good.”
“So.” You pressed your lips together, “I guess that makes you the fucker who’s been rickrolling me.”
He laughed. It was pretty cute. “I’m Michael.”
   “[y/n],” you said, smiling.
   “It’s cute,” he said.
“Michael?” You said, looking around. “Can I tell you something?”
    He nodded.
You put on the sweetest smile you can manage. “If you rickroll me again, we’re gonna have a problem.”
