On The Jukebox: Meghan Trainor - “Takin’ It Back (Deluxe Edition)”
Tumblr media
Featuring guest appearances from MAX (on “Special Delivery”), Teddy Swims (on “Bad For Me”), Theron Theron (on “Breezy”), Natti Natasha (on “Mama Wanna Mambo”), Arturo Sandoval (on “Mama Wanna Mambo”), Scott Hoying (on “Sensitive”) and Kim Petras (on “Made You Look (Remix)”).
[Honestly, I’m not 100% sure why I bothered with this release.  All of the flaws from the original release are here: most of the songs sound like unfinished sketches rather than full songs and features are wildly unbalanced [they’re either barely audible in the mix (Scott Hoying) or steal the album out from under Meghan (every other feature)].  Add to that the vague whiff of appropriation around songs like “Mother” and “Mama Wanna Mambo” and the sense that Kim Petras is only on the “Made You Look” remix because “Unholy” was such a hit...]
[Don’t get me wrong, I like Meghan.  She can write a catchy tune and I’ve enjoyed a number of her songs.  But when I know someone can do better and ends up putting out an album that’s so resoundingly *average*...it’s incredibly disappointing.]
[Oh, and as “meh” as I was about the original cover for this album...this new cover is so.  much.  WORSE.  There is nothing about this cover that is flattering towards Meghan and it looks like they spent about $20 on it.  Just...yeesh.]

Joey DeFrancesco, Jazz’s Hammond B3 Organ Master, Dead at 51
- “He is one in a million,” Nancy Kelly says
Joey DeFrancesco, jazz’s master of the Hammond B3 organ and a multi-instrumentalist, has died.
He was 51. DeFrancesco’s wife, Gloria, did not give a cause in announcing her husband’s Aug. 26 death.
“The love of my life is now in peace with the angels,” Gloria DeFrancesco said. “Right now I have very few words. Thank you for the outpouring of love and support coming in from everywhere. Joey loved you all.”
Veteran jazz singer Nancy Kelly recalled DeFrancesco, as a 12-year-old prodigy, sitting in with her. They’ve remained friends through the decades.
“I remember being froze with sheer astonishment,” Kelly wrote on Facebook. “Never had we seen a talent like this - ever. … His influence on the jazz world will remain a treasured jewel. He is one in a million. I need time to process this loss.”
DeFrancesco recorded more than 30 albums and counted Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Van Morrison, Diana Krall, George Benson, John Scofield, John McLaughlin and David Sanborn among his many collaborators.
“Goodbye to my brother Joey DeFrancesco,” McLaughlin tweeted. “We shared some of the greatest concerts of my life. We’ll miss you.”
A “devastated” Arturo Sandoval called DeFrancesco’s death “horrible news” on social media.
“RIP, dear brother, we’re all going to miss you so much,” Sandoval wrote. “You will never be forgotten.”
DeFrancesco’s next album, More Music, is to be released Sept. 24. The organist was to headline this weekend’s Northwest Jazz Festival; Emmet Cohen will instead perform a tribute to his mentor.
“We want to assure everyone that we will adjust and put in place a plan that will honor Joey and also produce a memorable festival experience,” organizers said in announcing the “tragic news.”

On this day 12 January 1919 workers and university students in Lima, Peru, walked out on a mass general strike for a maximum eight-hour working day. Facing mass agitation for the eight-hour day, in November 1918 the president granted it for women and children workers, hoping this would placate the movement. However, this was unsuccessful and the following month around 3,000 workers in Lima's biggest textile factories walked out on strike demanding an eight-hour day. Anarchist workers then prepared to launch a general strike in support of the demand. Several leading anarchists were arrested and brutally tortured by the police, including Manuel Cabana, Arturo Sabroso Montoya, José Sandoval Morales, and Aurelio Reyes. But in January the general strike went ahead regardless, and violent street clashes erupted and continued for three days until the government caved in in January 15. * We only post highlights on here, for all our anniversaries follow us on Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@workingclasshistory https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/2184803365038135/?type=3
