Shinonome makes an expression that could freeze hell over, if they hadn’t already trudged through it to get here. “What…is this?”

“The Latin terminology is viscum album," Gouto observes, almost shouting over the din of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra over the mounted speakers in the living room. "It’s classified as part of the Santalaceae family—”

“It’s mistletoe!” Amiguchi nearly spills the crystal pitcher full of red drink (not wine, not cranberry juice—unidentified drink) in his excitement. “And you’re the first to fall under its ancient trap. You know the rules, now—”

“No,” Shinonome says.

(To the Tune of Wheel of Fortune) Mistle! That! Toe!, a #13sentinels Christmas themed fic, is up! This was written for @liebelaika as part of our server's Secret Santa gift exchange! She requested mistletoe shenanigans for the entire cast, so here it be! We’ve also got a lovely collaboration of artists who teamed up to thank anita for organizing the entire event for us! My most recent addition to my altar is this brass mistletoe trinket dish I use as an offering plate. It was made by Virginia Metalcrafters in the ‘50s and is part of a whole plant-themed series for them. It was apparently made in two sizes. The bigger one is used on my altar, and the smaller dish is a nightstand accessory.

Mistletoe, aside from being sacred to druids and full of folklore on its medicinal and symbolic use, is a personally important plant in my life. It showed up again and again on random trees wherever I moved as a military brat. Mistletoe doesn’t grow in the cold climate where I live now, so I decorate my altar with mistletoe-themed items, including my altar cloth, wand, and ogham runes.

I appreciate that the artists modeled the dish’s design on American mistletoe, or Phoradendron leucarpum. I feel as though North America under-appreciates its native variety of mistletoe. I see the European variety (Viscum album) more commonly represented in media, as well as a bemoaning that our native species isn’t “the real deal.” It’s a shame to me, really, because our native species is very pretty!

Viscum Album: PARASITE is based on a book - dictionary - alphabet, which the collective (c) merry Tereza Darmovzalová, Martin Fišr, Vladimír Havlík, Martin Mazanec published as part of their exhibition in Milan. The alphabet, in which each letter represents one larger theme characterized by a multi-word note and accompanied by photographs, is the product of the joint work and research of a team of visual and conceptual artists, theorists and curators.

Viscum Album: PARASITE vychází z knihy – slovníku – abecedy, který kolektiv Tereza Darmovzalová, (c) merry, Martin Fišr, Vladimír Havlík, Martin Mazanec vydal v rámci své výstavy v Miláně. Abeceda, ve které každé písmeno zastupuje jedno větší téma charakterizované několikaslovnou poznámkou a doplněné fotografiemi, je produktem společné práce a výzkumu kolektivu tvořeného vizuálními a konceptuálními umělci, teoretiky a kurátory.

„Slovo PARASITE (v angl.) využívají autoři ve dvou významech. Zaprvé jako "parazit", vztahující se k názvu skupiny (Viscum Album – latinsky jmelí bílé), a také k formátu nápisu/reklamní plochy parazitující na veřejném prostoru; druhý význam se váže ke stavební parcele, kterou ohrada skrývá – "para" jako latinská předpona vedlejší, nebo také odlišný, "site" jako místo nebo právě stavební plocha. Tyto významy jsou nicméně rozšířeny o další sémantické roviny vycházející z abecedy Viscum Album a nápis se tak stává především nositelem konceptů utvářených a reaktivovaných členy kolektivu,“ říká kurátor Muzea umění Jakub Frank.
