Savion Glover, Jason Robert Brown, Priscilla Lopez, More Join NYPL I'm Still Here Benefit

The upcoming benefit, celebrating the New York Public Library's Billy Rose Theatre Division, honors George C. Wolfe and the late Harold Prince.

Additional artists have joined the upcoming I'm Still Here benefit, celebrating the 90th anniversary of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ Billy Rose Theatre Division and the 50th anniversary of its Theatre on Film and Tape Archive.

Honoring Tony-winning directors George C. Wolfe and the late Harold Prince, I’m Still Here will stream on Broadway on Demand June 23 at 8 PM ET.

Jason Robert Brown, Savion Glover, Priscilla Lopez, Susan Stroman, Marisha Wallace, and Christopher Wheeldon have joined the starry roster of participants. The evening, as previously announced, will also feature archival content of several Broadway productions preserved in the archive, including the newly announced Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson in The Mountaintop; Bette Midler in I'll Eat You Last; Brian Stokes Mitchell in Ragtime; Kelli O'Hara and Paulo Szot in South Pacific; Christian Borle and Tim Curry in Spamalot; and Craig Bierko and Rebecca Luker in The Music Man.

Viewers can expect to see Glover, Jimmy Tate, Choclattjared, and Raymond King in Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk; Meryl Streep, Marcia Gay Harden, and Larry Pine in The Seagull; Lin-Manuel Miranda, Robin de Jesús, Christopher Jackson, Karen Olivo, Andréa Burns, Janet Dacal, Eliseo Román, and Seth Stewart in In the Heights; and Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard.

The virtual benefit is produced and conceived by Boardman and Doran and features direction by Steve Broadnax, Sammi Cannold, Nick Corley, Ty Defoe, Lorin Latarro, Mia Walker, and Jason Michael Webb, choreography by Ayodele Casel, Latarro, and Ray Mercer, with new music arranged by Rachel Dean and Annastasia Victory, arrangements and orchestrations by Brian Usifer, and casting by Peter Van Dam at Tara Rubin Casting.

Incredibly, the 2019 blackout that shut down the West Side Saturday night and shuttered 26 of 30 Broadway shows — all but the four that begin with B (Be More Chill, Beetlejuice, Beautiful, and Burn This) — occurred on the 42nd anniversary of the 1977 blackout, and during filming of the musical “In The Heights,” in which a blackout triggers much of the action. (The blackout in the show is based on the actual blackout of July 6, 1999 that left 200,000 people north of 155th Street without power for 18 hours.) “Blackout Blackout….We are powerless. We are powerless,” the cast sings in “The Blackout” song. Nina and Benny sing “When the Sun Goes Down.”

Andre De Shields takes Hadestown to the street

The Broadway Blackout prompted casts to take their show into the streets, at least for a while, as I chronicled in a previous post.

I missed all that. On Saturday night, I was seeing a show Off-Broadway, which was not affected.

It’s good to keep in mind that the blackout was not just inconvenient; it caused damage: The Minskoff Theatre suffered a flood backstage, wrecking costumes from The Lion King.

“I love playing Alonzo. He’s got a distinct look and gets to really dance a range of emotions. This particular version allows him to be more gritty and aggressive.”

“Alonzo is a black and white tomcat that has one black paw and one white paw. He's definitely one of the more experienced cats in the tribe who tends to stick close to Munkustrap and loves to show off whenever he gets the chance. I see him as the self-proclaimed "second in command" but he has some courage issues. He's not one for conflict until he's forced to fight Macavity in order to save Demeter from his clutches. It's the first time his vanity doesn't get the best of him.”

And, in response to a tricky question:

There were some harsh words reported in the media about original choreographer Gillian Lynne’s reaction to Andy Blankenbuehler’s additional choreography, telling The Stage, “It makes me feel like I’d like to murder.” How do you think his vocabulary of movement is going to improve upon a classic?

“Andy is a master of creating brilliant movement that furthers narrative, bleeds intention, and narrows focus. Those are the main things that make a show like CATS even better that it was before. He has such respect for the original body of work and is treating it with the utmost reverence. Our generation is able to access this story at a pace that suits the audience of today. The expectations are higher so our job is even harder. Loyalists will be able to recognize the CATS they fell in love with while feeling its weight and relevance in today’s society.”

I’m Still Here, a star-studded evening celebrating the 90th anniversary of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ Billy Rose Theatre Division and the 50th anniversary of its Theatre on Film and Tape Archive, will stream on Broadway on Demand June 23 at 8 PM ET.

Honoring Tony-winning directors George C. The program will also feature interviews with Broadway artists discussing the re-conception of classic musical theatre songs, including “A Trip to the Library,” “Wheels of a Dream,” “Another Hundred People,” “Love Will Find a Way,” and, fittingly, “I’m Still Here.”

Young Jean Lee

Playwright Young Jean Lee wrote an Op-Ed this week about the advantages of affirmative action in education and diversity in the theater. Looking at some of the faces below of the people who made theater news this week helps provide the proof — performer Billy Porter delivering the LGBTQ State of the Union; Qui Nguyen announcing a sequel to his “Vietgone”; Kenny Leon directing Shakespeare and Kristoffer Diaz writing the book for the stage musical Hercules, both in Central Park; a new trophy for Yazbek (David) and a new role for Yazbeck (Tony), both descended from Lebanese immigrants. It’s bracing then to realize that it’s the theater that popularized blackface; for nearly a century the minstrel show was the most popular stage entertainment in America, and, as recent events make clear, it remains part of our cultural DNA. More than half a century has passed since the Berrigan brothers, both of them priests, along with seven other Catholic activists, broke the law to protest the Vietnam War… The Trial of the Catonsville Nine” ran on Broadway for 29 performances in June, 1971, with a 16-member cast including Sam Waterston and James Woods… Now, the Transport Group is presenting what it calls a radical re-imagining of the playWhat’s changed most drastically is the staging. Talking Band’s City of No Illusions

“City of No Illusions” (the title a nickname for Buffalo, since the Blizzard of 1977), which Talking Band artistic director Paul Zimet has both written and directed. Running from February 8 to 24th at La MaMa, the play explores this connection between death and immigration in scenes that alternate between serious, satirical and surreal. The cast includes young performers who are themselves immigrants portraying the characters who are immigrants or refugees.

Christopher Burney has been appointed the new artistic director of New York Stage and Film (responsible for Powerhouse season every summer at Vassar) Currently artistic producer at Second Stage, he succeeds Johanna Pfaelzer, who’s been named new artistic director of Berkeley Rep.

The Davenport Theater closed in January after five years. Ken Davenport, the producer who said he named the theater after his grandfather, has told people in the industry that he lost his lease.“It will not be a theater,” a rep of the landlord told Philip Boro in Broadway Journal. “Maybe a gym.”

In an opinion piece in the New York Times — “I’m Asian-American: Affirmative Action Worked for Me” — playwright Young Jean Lee (Straight White Men, etc.) talks about her getting into Berkeley because of affirmative action, turned her life around. But she also talks about the theater:

“I’ve seen how increasing diversity can cause a field to flourish. The theater world is in the midst of a golden age of playwriting, and this has coincided with a concerted effort by theaters to diversify their programming. The next step is for theaters to produce more work by playwrights who come from low-income backgrounds, as our field is still dominated by the voices of the middle-to-upper classes. To achieve real diversity, I believe that affirmative action should be a holistic process, as it is at Harvard, encompassing class as well as race.”
