Third Thursday events and exhibitions for May 16

The next Third Thursday — the monthly evening of art in Athens, Georgia — is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. This schedule and each venue’s location and hours of operation are available at 3thurs.org.

Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia

Yoga in the Galleries, 6 p.m. — This free yoga class surrounded by works of art in the galleries is led by instructors from Five Points Yoga and open to both beginner and experienced yogis. Sanitized mats are provided. Space is limited and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis; tickets are available at the front desk starting at 5:15 p.m.

Dispersions in Watercolor: New Multi-Disciplinary Music, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. — Join Amy Yang, dean of the storied Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, alongside University of Georgia faculty and student performers as they explore newly created, multidisciplinary works inspired by visual art, poetry and the environment in this free concert presented with Chamber Music Athens and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

“RESCUE: Waste and Redemption” —Following a call for art using recycled and repurposed materials, guest curator Lizzie Zucker Saltz selected 22 artists from over 80 proposals. Artists included consider the transformation of industrial byproducts into artworks or craft objects, thus saving materials from the landfill or rescuing raw materials from becoming environmental pollutants.

The Classic Center

Classic 1: “Spotlight” — Featuring the work of three painters: William Ballard, Jaci Davis and Ella Hopkins. William Ballard is interested in color and its effects on our mood and perception, Jaci Davis’ powerful portrait-based works address identity, and Ella Hopkins paints intriguing landscapes and interior spaces.

Classic 2: “The Fables” — Athens artist Kristin Roberts illustrates Aesop’s Fables with detailed works that are both whimsical and dangerous.

Favorite Movie and Television Productions About Old Hollywood

Below is a list of my favorite costume movie and television productions about the Golden Age of Hollywood (in chronological order of release):

FAVORITE MOVIE AND TELEVISION PRODUCTIONS ABOUT OLD HOLLYWOOD

"Singin' in the Rain" (1952) - Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds starred in this musical classic about Hollywood's transition from silent films to talkies. Kelly co-directed with Stanley Donen.

"Moviola: The Scarlett O'Hara War" (1980) - Tony Curtis starred as producer David O. Selznick in the second episode of the miniseries, "Moviola". The television movie featured Selznick's search for the right actress to portray the leading character in his movie adaptation of "Gone With the Wind".

“Quennie” (1987) - Mia Sara and Kirk Douglas starred in two-part miniseries, which is an adaptation of Michael Korda’s 1985 biography of actress Merle Oberon. Larry Peerce directed.

"Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" (1988) - Robert Zemeckis directed this adaptation of Gary Wolfe's 1981 novel, "Who Censored Roger Rabbit?", in which a 1940s private detective who must exonerate a cartoon star "Toon" for the murder of a wealthy businessman. Bob Hoskins, Charles Fleischer and Christopher Lloyd starred.

"The Rocketeer" (1991) - Joe Johnston directed this adaptation of Dave Stevens’ comic book series about a stunt pilot who stumbles across a prototype jetpack that allows him to become a high-flying masked hero in 1938 Los Angeles. Bill Campbell, Jennifer Connolly, Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton starred.

"The Cat’s Meow" (2001) - Peter Bogdanovich directed this fictionalized account of William Randolph Hearst’s November 1924 weekend cruise celebrating Thomas Ince’s birthday. The movie starred Kirsten Dunst, Edward Hermann, Eddie Izzard and Cary Elwes.

"The Aviator" (2004) - Martin Scorsese produced and directed this biopic about mogul Howard Hughes' experiences as a filmmaker and aviator between 1927 and 1947. Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio starred.

"Hollywoodland" (2006) - Adrien Brody, Diane Lane and Ben Affleck starred in this intriguing tale about a private detective's investigation into the life and death of actor George Reeves. Allen Coulter directed.

"The Artist" (2011) - Michel Hazanavicius wrote and directed this Academy Award winning movie about a silent screen star and the disruption of his life and career by the emergence of talking pictures. Oscar winner Jean Dujardin and Oscar nominee Bérénice Bejo starred.

"Saving Mr. Banks" (2013) - John Lee Hancock directed this superb and emotional tale about author P.L. Travers and producer Walt Disney’s tug-of-war over the development of the 1964 movie, "Mary Poppins". Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks starred.

"Trumbo" (2015) - Oscar nominee Bryan Cranston starred in this biopic about screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and his troubles after being jailed and blacklisted for being a member of the Communist Party. Directed by Jay Roach, Diane Lane and Helen Mirren co-starred.

"The Last Tycoon" (2016-2017) - Billy Ray created this television adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's unfinished novel about a Hollywood producer during the mid-1930s. Matt Bomer starred.

"Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood" (2019) - Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this excellent tale about a fading actor and his stunt double struggling to regain success in the film industry during the final year of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles. Oscar nominee Leonardo Di Caprio, Oscar winner Brad Pitt and Oscar nominee Margot Robbie starred.

my nhl rankings with included analysis: the (select) vancouver canucks & their chances at doing well in cbc’s battle of the blades

judging how good or bad these boys would do in figure skating is the only thing keeping me from being sad

***for those who don’t know what battle of the blades is, it’s a competition like dancing with the stars where hockey players and figure skaters pair up and compete in figure skating to win money for charity

brock boeser - prince charming is a solid skater and has a solid body. i think he would excel at the physical portions of figure skating BUT he has like zero personality so i think that would be the only draw back

zack macewen - okay, king zack macaroni is the whole damn package: big strong man who can skate and is an energetic and personable characeter. i personally believe that he would be able to absolutely kill any figure skating routine and be able to do lifts and throws with ease. mark my words: he would win the whole damn thing

quinn hughes - i think this could be a sheldon kennedy story. quinn is a beautiful skater, with his precision and edge control; his only downside is his size and i don’t think he would be able to complete lifts. IF he did ice dance based instead (like sheldon) he too could be a true contender

tyler motte - like quinn, i do believe size could be an issue for him but his skating is pretty good and i think he would do a good job of artistic expression

jake virtanen - he’s strong and a good skater for his size so he would be good for the physical demands of the sport but i don’t think he would do much in the other aspects, still a contender though

bo horvat - bo thorvat could do it, mark my words, look at that unit of a man

thatcher demko - all the goalies have a ?????, maybe thatcher is really good at skating i don’t know but he’s very expressive which is why he is not lower on the ranking

jacob markstrom - a big man who could execute the lifts but i fear his skating is not up to par as he’s a goalie

adam gaudette - he is an absolute PERFORMER (have y’all seen his cellys??) BUT i don’t see him doing all that great at the skating aspects

troy stecher - our short king might be able to pull off ice dance but i do not believe he could excel in the figure skating

elias pettersson - he has the skating ability and personality but not sure if he could lift people above his head But he always seems to surprise us so i would like to see it

tyler myers - he’s really tall and that’s it

jt miller - i don’t think he has the necessary elegance for the sport not even a crumb sorry jimothy timothy

louis domingue - i am uncertain of his potential

chris tanev - i love this big unit of a beauty but he is too fragile for lifting people, it’ll break his already half artificial bones

alex edler - he’s old and his skating has degenerated. no

My Week(s) in Reviews: September 21, 2019

I was busy, so I skipped last week. Here’s what I’ve been watching since last time.

Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019)

‘To the Stars...’

Significantly more intimate than expected. A beautiful film all around, if occasionally lacking in those big ‘wow’ moments so many science-fiction films strive for. The Mars sequence is so beautifully shot and edited, it hurts. Brad Pitt turns in one of the best performances of his career (I’d say his 2019 work makes up for two of his top five, really), a rich emotional exploration of duty, grief, family and purpose. Gray has made a special, ambitious sci-fi film, here. A surprising tale of men longing to find something greater than themselves out in the vast, unforgiving unknown that is space. - 8/10

Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria, 2019)

The energy is completely off in this one. Scafaria falters, never wanting to fully condemn or praise these women for the terrible things they’ve done. The storytelling formula used only ever works in completely tearing the viewer out of the moment. But the cast is solid. Constance Wu in impressive, and her journey from timid stripper to criminal ‘mastermind’ is fully realized. Lili Reinhart is hilarious. Then there’s Jennifer Lopez, who delivers what just might be a career best performance. She’s a beautiful, brutal lioness on the hunt to protect her ‘cubs’. At least that’s what this film insists it’s about: motherhood. It pushes its ideas on the audience forcefully; these women are doing the awful things they’re doing for their ‘children’. Really, it’s about power. J.Lo isn’t a lioness, she’s a shark. These women aren’t doing that they need to do to take care of their children, they’re doing it because it feels good flipping the script of these powerful men. They’re taking advantage of them because they can; because it makes them feel powerful. The film would’ve been a whole lot stronger if it had the guts to just come out and admit that, rather than poorly hiding it behind the hokey veil of motherhood. - 5/10

Yesterday (Danny Boyle, 2019)

Just a few things... (Possible SPOILERS ahead.)

-It’s light and mostly fun, but falls apart in its third act.

-Ed Sheeran is the worst kind of celebrity, but at least here he’s willing to play into that fact for comedy’s sake.

-How could anyone not fall instantly in love with Lily James?

-The scene where Jack visits John Lennon is wonderful, and the type of thing this film needed a whole lot more of.

-The idea behind this film is a fun one, and really deserved to be explored more. - 6/10

Blinded by the Light (Gurinder Chadha, 2019)

Have you ever listened to an artist that instantly hits you on a spiritual level, completely changing your life within a matter of minutes? That’s what Blinded by the Light is about. It’s a coming of age story about a Pakistani teenager living in a small town in England who’s life is instantly changed when a friend introduces him to Bruce Springsteen. Well, that and family, and a handful of other very familiar themes that only work here thanks to the fact that they’re fueled by the power of music. Everything that would feel recycled and tired otherwise hits home effectively thanks to The Boss. - 7.5/10

Late Night (Nisha Ganatra, 2019)

Enjoyed this. Emma Thompson is fantastic. Hugh Dancy doesn’t look like Hugh Dancy. And Mindy is very funny without crossing over too much into the annoying attention hungry zone she often found herself in on her show. - 6/10

Alita: Battle Angel (Robert Rodriguez, 2019)

A few fun action sequences can’t save this film from its awkward vfx and poorly developed world. - 3.5/10

Echo in the Canyon (Andrew Slater, 2019)

Very interesting, but it falters in its focus and doesn’t balance its interviews and performances very well. - 5.5/10

Also, in preparation for forthcoming My Best of the 2010s, I revisited a handful of favorites, including Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Arrival and Midnight in Paris. All of them are just as good as I remembered, if not significantly better, thank God.

And then there’s Netflix’s new Limited Series, Unbelievable. Holy Shit... What a Powerhouse. Kaitlyn Dever, I mean, Goddamn! Merritt Wever is quickly turning into one of those “I’ll jump to see whatever she’s in” level actresses. Then there’s Toni Collette, so underrated and always so damn good, and this is some of her finest work, period. The pacing is perfect. It’s often tough to watch, but always so damn captivating that you tough it out through the tears, anger and emotional exhaustion. Wow.

She uses photographs and site visits as inspiration to tell the story of those displaced by urban renewal and the expansion of the University of Georgia in the 1960s.

“Sharpening a Screw” — Each of the nine master of fine arts degree candidate students from the Lamar Dodd School of Art uses materials as fasteners, presenting a constellation of themes. Like any community, people had relocated, passed away and aged, but a notable number of shop owners and boatmen were still actively working and living there. The term ”Kashi Washi” refers to the individuals who live and work along the riverbank in this sacred city.

Thoughts : The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976)

After a trio of very personal, critically acclaimed independent films, John Cassavettes attempted to acquiesce to the popular sway with a deceptive passion project in the form of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. While being a memorable and entertaining film, it was also one that became the bane of Cassavettes' personal and creative experience, resulting in a pair of releases years apart from one another that reflect the independent vision versus the influence of the money men. The film has always fascinated me as much as it has entertained me, and after a recent revisit, I felt the need to share my thoughts on it, as Cassavettes inspires me heavily.

Cosmo Vittelli (Ben Gazzara) is the owner of Crazy Horse West, a strip club located on the famous Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Cosmo not only runs the business aspects of the club, but he is hands on in nearly all aspects of the operation, including designing and choreography of the dancers’ performances. As a self-proclaimed man of ‘style’, Cosmo longs for a chance to run a clean business where his art is appreciated at something more than a carnal level. After paying off a gambling debt to local loan shark Marty (Al Ruban), Cosmo meets Mort (Seymour Cassel), a gangster who runs a gambling hall with is associates. Cosmo talks himself into an invite, and after picking up three of his dancers, he visits Mort’s establishment, where he promptly racks up another sizeable debt to the gangsters. The following night, Mort brings his associates to Crazy Horse West and make a power move : hand over the Crazy Horse West, or kill a heavily-guarded bookie named Harold Ling (Soto Joe Hugh), who turns out to be Benny Wu, a formidable leader in the Chinese gambling world. With the biggest decision of his life in front of him, and pressure coming from Mort and his associates, Cosmo must put his integrity and morals to the test, once and for all.

Having a character like Cosmo (who longs in the deepest recesses of his heart to be an accomplished artist respected for his ‘style’) wishboned between the worlds of cabaret workers and gangsters makes for an interesting perspective on standard elements of vice and danger. Cosmo is very human in the sense that, although his intentions are lofty and dignified, his actions are often ham-handed, ill-thought out and poorly executed, save for when his life is on the line. It’s actually these moments when Cosmo’s back is against the wall that he actually lives up to the character qualities he aspires for, as if normal life or standard level inspiration gives him an excuse to phone in his actions. Ultimately, Cosmo is the true antagonist to his role as protagonist, as the majority of his issues have a straight line of responsibility connected to them that one can trace right back to Cosmo himself.

Outside of its neo-noir narrative, the film plays as a metaphor for John Cassavettes’ views on, and experiences in, Hollywood and the film industry. Crazy Horse West symbolizes Cassavettes and his company of actors, with each of their performances representing the work they release independently and outside of the system. Mort and the gangsters represent outside monetary and production influences, dead set on exerting their power and will come hell or high water. All of the narrative tension and conflict in the film are allegories for the endless problems and stress that come with the labor of love that is filmmaking. The lengths that Cosmo goes through to protect Crazy Horse West and those connected, even at a detriment to himself, represent the insane amounts (and levels) of choices and hurdles often placed at the feet of a director during a production, be it independent or otherwise. Even Cosmo’s brief trist that betrays the trust of Rachel directly after his gambling pitfall symbolizes the unhealthy way that creatives sometimes attempt to use work as a way to avoid their real stress, pain and problems.

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, in my opinion, serves as the first major jump in the Cassavettes independent canon in terms of production level... as much as I love Shadows, Faces and A Woman Under the Influence, this film is the first one to resemble its peers. This aesthetic, however, does not take away from the Cassavettes technique, as the lighting still has an edge to it, and the camera is much more introspective in its observation as opposed to the standard Hollywood style of framing. The patience that Cassavettes allows his tension-filled moments, be it the original or the truncated cut, holds well on the screen, and gives the audience a true interpretation of what Cosmo is going through mentally. For such a simple narrative, it’s impressive how much of a character study that Cassavettes was able to shape out of the project.

Ben Gazzara holds the weight of the film surprisingly well, managing to look both oafish and classy with an almost effortless manner of swinging between the two states. This plays well against Seymour Cassel’s sharp, slick manner, as if he is always angling, and Cosmo just happens to be the sucker born at that particular minute. Meade Roberts and his wonderfully dismissive attitude pop as Mr. Sophistication, with his closing moments between a wonderfully punctuating button to end the ride that is The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Timothy Carey, Robert Phillips and Morgan Woodard are wonderfully intimidating, tiptoeing the line between caricature and tough guy. Azizi Johari, Virginia Carrington, Alice Friedland, Donna Marie Gordon and Carol Warden bring charm and personality to their roles as staff of Crazy Horse West, especially when a few of them are given a chance to double-down on the personality aspect once allowed into the bigger world by the Cosmo character. Appearances by Haji, Derna Wong Davis, Kathalania Veniero, Val Avery, John Finnegan and a very sobering moment by Soto Joe Hugh round out the cast.

Plain and simple, this film is chock-full of actors that I love, and its off-beat approach to a genre I love makes it a refreshing view despite how often its watched or how recent the last viewing is. While not my favorite of the independent Cassavettes canon, I find it the one that I rewatch the most, and the one that impresses me the most in terms of production value balanced against narrative value.
