MWW Artwork of the Day (5/8/22) Julius Gari Melchers (American, 1860–1932) Mother and Child (1906) Oil on canvas, 63.5 x 54.3 cm. The Art Institute of Chicago (Gift of James Deering)
Inspired by contemporary Dutch painters of the Hague School, Gari Melchers, who settled in Holland after studying in Düsseldorf and Paris, specialized in naturalistic depictions of peasant life, including this sympathetic portrait of a young Dutch woman and her child. Melchers portrayed the pair with vivid intensity, contrasting the woman’s direct gaze with the charming appeal of the baby’s chubby face. In 1906 Melchers exhibited this painting at both the Paris Salon and the Art Institute.

"Portrait of Charles Lawrence Hutchinson" by Julius Gari Melchers American, 1860–1932 Oil on canvas United States, c. 1902
Julius Gari Melchers was an American expatriate artist known for his informal, impressionistic style.
Portrait of Charles Lawrence Hutchinson was painted in 1903 and is an example of Melchers' bold and impressionistic style.
The painting depicts Hutchinson in a seated pose, with his hands resting gently on his lap.
The portrait has muted colors, with a focus on the blues, greys and whites, creating a very calm and peaceful atmosphere.
The painting is also technically accomplished - the artist captures the subtle details of Charles Lawrence Hutchinson's face, from the curve of his jawline and the softness of his cheeks, to the glint of his eyes and the furrow of his brow. The painting also gives a sense of life and movement, as the artist captures the movement of the subject's clothing and the details of his surroundings. On an aesthetic level, the painting is pleasing to look at, with its muted tones and gentle brushstrokes.
The painting was created during a time when the United States was beginning to experience great technological and industrial change. This period of transition in the United States was marked by a post-Civil War optimism, which encouraged innovation and progress. As such, the painting reflects this time period's spirit of creative expression, offering a snapshot of the artistic and social landscape of the early 20th century.

Painting stolen by Nazis recovered from New York museum
Tumblr media
This undated image was taken from evidence filed in a forfeiture case in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.
CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. (AP) — A painting seized by the Nazis from a Jewish family in 1933 has been recovered from a museum in upstate New York by the FBI. The recovery is part of an international effort based in Germany to reclaim plundered artwork that was lost after the Nazis ascended to power and many Jewish families fled Germany. The effort to recover the Mosse heirs' artworks took shape in 2017 when they partnered with the Free University of Berlin and founded the Mosse Art Research Initiative. For the first time, German institutions are cooperating with descendants of Nazi persecution in a public-private partnership," the initiative's website states.
The painting, entitled "Winter," by American Impressionist painter Gari Melchers, was acquired from the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1900 by Rudolf Mosse, who died in 1920. Mosse was the founder of a company that published various periodicals in the early 20th century, according to federal court records.
The Nazi government seized control of the family's art collection after Mosse's family members, Felicia and Hans Lachman Mosse, fled Germany in early 1933. They left behind their family's vast art collection, which was placed under state administration, according to federal prosecutors. The Nazis had persecuted the family because they were Jewish and because of their affiliations with Berliner Tageblatt, a newspaper critical of the Nazi party, according to court documents. "The Nazis commissioned Karl Haberstock of the Rudolf Lepke auction house, to liquidate the Mosse family's art collection," according to forfeiture documents filed by the U.S. attorney's office.
In May 1934, an "unknown purchaser" bought the painting from an auction house and five months later it turned up at the MacBeth Art Gallery in New York City. Federal prosecutors said the Mosse family never received compensation for the stolen painting. Federal prosecutors characterized the Nazis' "legal process of dispossessing the Mosse family of its property (as) ... a charade."
Bartlett Arkell, the first president of the Beech-Nut Packing Company, located in Canajoharie NY, purchased the painting from the Macbeth Art Gallery in 1934, one of thousands of art pieces from around the world that he acquired for his personal collection. "The Macbeth Gallery was a popular gallery where Mr. Arkell purchased a number of his paintings that he eventually donated to the Arkell Museum," stated Charles J. Tallent, a trustee for the museum. "The painting was with the museum since 1934, until it was reclaimed by the Mosse family."
Suzan D. Friedlander, the museum's executive director and chief curator, said that the museum was very upset to learn the history of the painting's seizure from the Mosse family by the Nazis in 1933 and its subsequent sale at the Lepke Auction in 1934. "We fully support the work of the Mosse Art Research Initiative and other efforts, and willingly turned over the painting to the FBI, waiving all rights, title, and interest in the painting." stated Friedlander in an emailed statement.
An FBI unit based in New York City that has expertise in rare artwork helped special agents in Albany secure the painting in a special storage crate that will protect it from damage due to atmospheric conditions such as humidity changes. The painting is being kept at the FBI's Albany office until it can be reunited with the Mosse family.

‘The Nativity’ (painting by Gari Melchers)
Tumblr media
Circa 1891 Height: 90.17 cm (35.5 in.), Width: 110.49 cm (43.5 in.) https://garimelchers.umw.edu/gari-melchers/bel-1606-2/
About this painting, one contemporary person wrote on FB:
I love this portrayal of the Nativity. Before the shepherds come rushing in jabbering about an angel choir, before ANYONE shows up with gifts, there's just Mary, exhausted from child birth, and Joseph, overwhelmed by the task in front of him, and the baby, the baby that changes everything. The quiet beauty of THIS moment stirs my heart every time I look at it. I love the pomp and fanfare of Christmas (and the chaos of family gatherings). I really do! But I cherish the quiet moments to stop and gaze at the baby. I too am exhausted and overwhelmed, and He still changes everything.
