Ooh plenty, but I think one of my favorites is Cordelia and Elise, which has grown out of Elise's progression of character—although I always wanted them to make amends, she was much more of a static rival character and their reconciliation/friendship after years of being in constant competition and with mutual dislike just felt a little bit too easy. She's a much more interesting character now, I think, for her strong sense of justice, and the event that split them apart in the first place, both of them had (hopefully) very sympathetic reasons for doing what they did, and reacting as they did—as well as reasons they can look back on and regret responding to the other so angrily.

👻 Ghost: Do you have a character or a scene that continues to haunt you? Something or someone you wish you had done differently or just can’t stop thinking about?

WHEW, a lot. Difficulties of doing mostly third-person limited and having a fondness for subplots being very subtextual/limited in information until the main character gets whammed w them, I never get to go into depth the way I'm tempted to. Hyacinth, Duke Ardennes, Carys and Hatzirah, literally Rhen's entire backstory—they could all be their own books. And an addenum to that, in apparently a consistent character archtype to me—Constance and Elinori, two mothers who are dead but who haunt the narrative in very different ways, and sort of the distangling of this benevolent, ideal legacy left behind to the much more complicated woman beneath.

Our runners-up this week are @grornt, @nicolbolas96​ and @teaxch.

I find it very interesting when a card really speaks to me, and in the workshop I can see there’s a lot of buzz as well. People do indeed support each other here, and it shows not only in the strength of these designs over the Fair’s history but also in the growth of the Fair itself. We don’t have metrics or incentives or anything, but man, I’m really happy to agonize over my choices. Here are three cards that, for different (and surprisingly similar!) reasons, made me want to commend them.

@grornt​ — Bloodweaver Maenads

Cards that trigger and do fun stuff when Auras come into the mix are, as far as I can tell, pretty solid in white, but there’s way more red and green in the mix to really say that white has a monopoly. For a card like Ardenn, there’s a card like Valduk, for Graceblade Artisan, there’s Aura Gnarlid, etc. BUT. Specifically RG auras as a signpost draft? You are correct that that’s never been done before in a printed set. There’s the colors that play with those concepts and the cards that have that around, but as a central theme, no, you’re right. The reason I was hand-wavy was because of other specific Aura precedent. Theros, though? Hasn’t had this kind of thing. Flavor-wise? Everyone was right to commend you for that. I’m really damn picky about my flavor text, as many contestants would agree. This is some beautiful, evocative, thematically relevant, decadently horrific text.

I saw this card in the inbox an began talking out loud in my room about how cool this was. Upon critical reexamination, I found myself kind of sad because I ha to ask myself: what kind of archetype would this be defining? What do we want the as-fan o coin flipping to be? How many cards with coin flipping do you want in a set to have it as an archetype? I adore the flavor of a rogue who comes out ahead if the cost comes out wrong, the person who can make and break their own luck and find ways to cheat when they lose—flavor-wise, I mean. But this really feels more like a MH2 card than anything that would see Standard play. As a stand-alone blue-black legend, totally fine. This is also assuming a lot about surveil, too; I always thought that “coin flipping rogues” would be the archetype this week, y’know? Surveil makes things complicated. It really should have been just scry. The strength of how this card made me feel and the amount it wanted me to be able to make this work doesn’t quite match the necessity this contest asked for.

That flavor text made me nostalgic for an actual story in MTG again. I can rest easy knowing that Innistrad’s return will see two sets and that something might actually, you know, happen, but regardless: this card suffers on the single point that noncombat damage and its buffs are pretty squarely in red already. The design space hasn’t been explored too much, admittedly, but it doesn’t exactly feel like a stretch of the concept for an archetype. Let me be clear: there doesn’t need to be a super-stretch and you stayed within realistic bounds to make a really neat and strange archetype that people can play with. I was just looking now for how to make an infinite combo; more likely than not you’d need to go Grixis, but that’s not the point. This card is good, the story it’s telling is one I want to hear, it’s a strong signpost uncommon, and it’s all-around fantastic, and there’s been no direct archetype like it before. I’m...curious, though, how much noncombat damage shows up in a set, y’know? Just checking, though: there are 21 cards from AFR that are capable of dealing noncombat damage. Maybe that’s not as much of a stretch as I thought. Whoof. I think this would need testing.

Hahaha nonnie, this gave me a good laugh. I think based on timing this has something to do with the Three Days in December snippet I posted a few days ago? There were a couple people “vibrating” (literally like four people used that word) in my inbox, which is honestly a great feeling. thinking of tim liking when the reader uses him… not necessarily in a sexual way, just likes when you ask for favors and tries to convince him to say yes like he wouldn’t already do anything you asked (kissing him silly, batting your eyelashes, twirling your hair, anything else to try to make him agree to do something maybe illegal or immoral for you (lets say you wanna know where someone lives or home security info idk..) and he’s like i’d do it anyway but im not complaining)

I love this and agree . I like to think Tim has an impish, playful nature... he'd love to see you acting all cute and probably make it a game to see how long you could keep it up. He can't deny you anything, there's literally no point hehe he just likes seeing you fawn over him.

(Despite that he knows damn well that he's much more wrapped around your finger than vice versa.)

Yandere Damian is especially scary when he is more of an al ghul than wayne. He has lazzarus pits he can just dump you and him in it, you know trick you into believing you are going to some hot spring and then after some time you realise you are not really aging and you are stuck with him forever ❤️ you can try to run but it won’t matter, he can play the long game. You and him have the rest of eternity to make up for the lost time after all

Superman, of course: You can kick and punch all you want - you won't get anywhere with that. Or imagine him flying miles into the air and threatening (softly) to drop you unless you calm down. He really will do it, even if he saves you five seconds later. What's scariest is knowing that even if you ask for help, no one can save you. He's fucking Superman.

Supergirl: same as Superman, but I think she has a petulant edge that's really awful. You can't reason with her if she's already made up her mind. Even if we're talking about Adult!SG, it's like you're talking to a child, holy fuck

Flash: .............something very terrifying of a man who can whisk you away before you can blink. If you ran away, he'd of course let you get a head start, just for kicks. Then he collects you, whether you're halfway across the world or just down the street. He'd run so fast the air leaves your lungs and by the time you've come to, you're back home... Yikes. I think he'd give you a lot of vertigo and disorientation to keep your mind addled.

Dr. Fate, Constantine, Zatanna: christ. Really, any magic user can go in this slot. I think the depths of their powers are just scary to even think about. Imagine arguing with them and getting kicked into another dimension, left to lose your sanity for what feels like years, but was perhaps just 10 minutes in regular time. Sure, they would bend reality for you, but they also would bend it just to keep you in line.

Scariest ruining-your-mental-health-wise:

Lex Luthor: oh god he's just the worst. He genuinely believes he owns you, unlike most of the other DC yans that at least try to pretend you have human rights. Him being a yandere probably consists of him offering you a place in his home. If refused, you won't be able to enjoy anything ever again. You'll be followed. You won't get new work anywhere. If you're famous, the tabloids are all against you and ruining your reputation because everyone is in Lex's pockets. He'd be a more spiteful Bruce Wayne, essentially.

Batman: I can't even elaborate like you already know. LMAO

The Question: i'm sorry the amount of paranoia this man would give me specifically. I grew up around paranoid people and they do irreversible psychic damage LOL. He'll be gaslighting you AND himself into believing into conspiracies at the same time.

I think he may push back slightly once you've been requesting new stuff for like. Months. In terms of other manipulation... yeah I think after like two weeks it'd be a wrap. Imagining darling trying to get Bruce to stop patrolling or ease off the Batman mantle, and you'd maybe get two weeks of reduced patrol (as the rest of the batfam picks up the slack) before he's like, "I think we forgot who calls the shots in this relationship." LMAO

i can see yj!dick leaning towards the possessive aspect of being a yandere. not to say he isn’t violent… he’d print out photos of guys you talk to, hang them on a wall, and throw darts at them. maaaybe he’s a bit insecure in your relationship if you meet in the early seasons and he’s cocky and show-offish to compensate for his doubt. later though?? that boy knows you like him (who wouldn’t? he likes you more, though.) you know how he leaves the team behind a lot/goes off on his own? i feel like if you were part of the team and went on missions with them he’d only look back to make sure you were with him (still runs off when he sees you’re okay and aware, but he’s keeping an eye on you. covertly.) if you tell him that the stealthy laugh he does makes you feel safe/reassured, he definitely does it a lot more. if you’re less on the field and have a more passive position, like a doctor, he makes it a habit to get hurt more often. comes to you for the SMALLEST injuries so you can baby him. you tell him to gtfo (no you don’t cuz who could say no to him!!) he gets a scrape and comes crying to you about it he’s so silly… not sure what would happen with his canon relationships. maybe he’d still flirt and pursue relationships, but it’s definitely less genuine and more of a fill in type situation. gets broken up with once his partners realize they deserve better than someone who thinks of them as a rebound/stand-in (my true biases are showing maybe. cough zatanna cough barbara) less than a minor inconvenience to him but you better believe he runs to you every breakup, getting you to comfort him. (you turn your back for a second and his pout turns into the most sly grin ever. you turn back around and his eyes are full of unshed tears.) side note i don’t think he’s too hard to fluster early on. likes it when you get bold/assertive because he’s usually the one dropping hints lmfao. you’re still oblivious bless your heart but he’s making progress maybe? if you DO make the first move he’s speechless. I think Dick would love it honestly!!

The first time you do it, maybe he'd blush or even stutter if he's talking to you. If his darling doesn't know he's Robin, he'd have a split second of his anxiety spiking, thinking, 'Wait what.' But of course he'd deduce very quickly that it's just a cute, endearing name you've chosen.

I think Dick may feel bittersweet nostalgia when remembering his mother called him that, but I don't think he'd be averse to it at all. (Considering that everyone called him Robin while he was still Batman's partner.) He'd probably even mention it to you, in a moment of vulnerability and because he knows that you'll feel even closer to him for doing so.

Knowing how traumatic losing his parents was, you'll feel honored to call him by the same nickname. It's like 20% manipulation tactics LOL on Dick's part.

In my eyes, Yan!Damian probably would be drawn to you because of your (falsely) preconceived purity. <3 You're not entirely naive or ignorant of reality, but he enjoys how comparatively light your life is. In the comics, Damian's clearly insecure about having a place to belong and seeking acceptance from the family as a Robin and future-Batman. From you, he seeks validation in being a socially-functional person. You're proof he's capable of romantic love, maybe even one day being a father. His family has been homicidally dysfunctional at its worst, so I imagine he welcomes the idea of starting a new family unit.

Although, in his efforts to Not Traumatize them, I can see him giving them equally-bad complexes and issues, as he was given by Bruce/Talia/Ra's. Just in different ways perhaps...

i appreciate the circumstantial canon evidence that tim (along with dick) is the most 'likeable' of the batboys. tim has had a lot of romantic partners in comparison to the rest. while i think the writers just didn't know/couldn't nail a good OTP for him, i choose to interpret it as him being very charming in a layman way. he's nerdy but also personable. witty and sarcastic but also inoffensive. he's the most Charming but Normal guy you could wish for. (as opposed to dick who feels Perfect, tim feels more approachable i guess?)

him not wanting to be batman also feels very 'down-to-earth', idk how to explain it....

hehe i think damian has some promise as an everyday yandere in his own silly way... you're right that he's more intense! but everyone (including himself) just accepts his intensity as his unique 'normal'. i do enjoy the idea of gotham tabloids making damian into an Ice Prince figure - he's curt and snappy but that's his charm (+ he's good looking and rich.) therefore we all overlook it~
