America's Most Hated Train Station Has a New Design Plan
Penn Station in New York City is known for the groan it elicits when people tell you they’re traveling through it. It’s that bad. Hugely busy, claustrophobic, and poorly maintained, the train station in New York needs a lot of love. It doesn’t help that it lives directly below Madison Square Garden, the famous arena, which makes it all the more difficult to renovate or change. Thankfully, the…

Julian Abele was a Black architect who, while working for the Horace Trumbauer firm in Philadelphia, was one the designers of Widener Library. Abele was the first Black student in the University of Pennsylvania Department of Architecture. In addition to his work on Widener he also helped design the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as several buildings on the Duke campus, including the Duke University Chapel and Cameron Indoor Stadium. He’s generally considered the most important Black architect of his era. There aren’t many surviving photos of Abele but we did find these in 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐞: 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐱 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 (New York, 2019) #julianabele #architecture #architects #blackhistorymonth #library #books #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #librarybooks #librarybook (at Harvard Yard) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoahFxMurSl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Architectural Archives at the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design has just opened Minerva Parker Nichols: The Search for a Forgotten Architect, an exhibition on a life and career that was almost left out of the history books. Independently designing beginning in 1886 and opening her own firm in 1889, Nichols conceived residences and buildings including women’s clubs in Wilmington, Delaware, and Philadelphia, as well as an unbuilt pavilion for the famed 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Despite working into her late 80s designing homes for veterans of World War II, Nichols’s contributions have nearly disappeared over the past 70 years.

Penn Station was a historic railroad station in New York City, named for the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was considered a masterpiece of the Beaux-Arts style and one of the great architectural works of New York City.

Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland
E. 6th St. and Superior Ave.
Cleveland, OH
The National Register-listed Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland is the Cleveland-based headquarters of the U.S. Federal Reserve System's Fourth District. The district is composed of Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. It has branch offices in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The bank building is a 13-story 203 foot high-rise, located at Superior Avenue and East 6th Street in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It was designed by the Cleveland firm of Walker and Weeks and completed in 1923. Its exterior architecture emulates an Italian Renaissance palazzo, and is clad in Georgia pink marble.
The building's entrances feature allegorical sculptures by Henry Hering representing Security and Integrity flanking the East Sixth Street entrance, while his Energy watches the Superior Avenue entry.  Its original 100 short tons bank vault door is the largest in the world and was designed by Frederick S. Holmes. The door casting itself was 20 short tons. It incorporates the largest hinge ever built. The hinge has an overall height of 19 feet and weighs over 47 short tons fully assembled. The vault's use was discontinued in 1997, though it is preserved intact for posterity.
The building was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1976. An extension to the building designed by HOK was completed in 1998, providing new facilities for check processing and cash handling.  In January 2006, the bank opened the Learning Center and Money Museum, replacing the public teller windows vacated after September 11, 2001. Over 30 hands-on exhibits focus on the history of money, its effects on societies and cultures, and its central role in peoples' lives. The museum is open from Monday through Thursday, except for bank holidays, and admission is free.
The museum includes a variety of activities and multi-media experiences to educate visitors, including computerized games about trading, writing contests, crayon rubbings, videos, speeches, films, and virtual tours, One recent addition to the Learning Center and Money Museum is the documentary titled "The Panic of 1907" which details how the panic led to the creation of the Federal Reserve System. This film was produced by Joseph G. Haubrich and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Unleash the Power of Outdoor Spaces with Motorized Retractable Roofs
In today's fiercely competitive leisure and entertainment sector, offering the greatest customer experiences and premium entertainment offerings are essential to drawing in new business and keeping existing ones. A Retractable Enclosures that is operated by a machine might be considered the keystone of the revolution in how businesses utilize their outside spaces. With the help of modern roofing technology, which can adjust to different weather conditions, businesses and resorts can now hold incredible events all year round and make the most of their spaces.
The most popular firm among architects and designers in the high-end motorized and Retractable Enclosures category is LITRA Group, which is leading the pack in this still-emerging sector. Due to the success of their freestyle systems in the coffee culture of eateries, lodging facilities, rooftop events, airports, and other places where they wish to improve the quality of the air in outdoor seating spaces, their clientele is growing daily.
Tumblr media
Retractable Enclosures is complex and has several elements. Eliminating the weather-related issues that outdoor enterprises encounter during the off-season is a rooftop farm's main goal. All business owners need to do is hit the play button to use automatic blinds to shield their clients from inclement weather, such as rain, snow, high winds, and days with plenty of movement. No matter what Mother Nature has in store, the operators can reserve their outdoor event planners and customers with locations for the maximum comfort thanks to this unparalleled management.
But the advantages go beyond only lowering vehicle emissions. The Retractable Roofs from us are aesthetically distinctive since they are highly practiced. Because of their extreme durability, they may be regarded as a folding mechanism that enables the panels to move when necessary in addition to folding into a safe position. When retracted, the streamlined lines merge with building elements to preserve the vista and the desired open-air embankment exposure. Operationally, they achieve their goal by creating an elevated tent that preserves the appearance of being outside.
With this combined installation method in place, companies can best serve their clients by allowing them to sit outside if that's their preference and/or to change environments at any moment by going within the protected zone. It is an adventure that not only makes people happy and entertained, but it is also such a delight to share.
We have dominated the industry with its motorized retractable roofs, which are already well regarded by several markets. Large cities including New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut have effectively employed curb-to-curb dining venues to expand their outdoor dining offerings. The explosive growth in product sales worldwide, even in the Crewed up Italian and Swiss markets, is another indication of the success.
Using our technology, hoteliers are creating upscale poolside lounges and outdoor BBQ areas where visitors can spend time in comfortable weather all year round. Pop-up beer gardens are a great way for a variety of businesses to expand their dining areas while still adhering to local code standards. Usage: English, the worldwide language of communication, unites individuals from all backgrounds and creates new chances for cooperation and cross-cultural interaction by bridging linguistic and cultural divides. Stadiums and other major event venues now have motorized retractable roof systems that offer shade to both performers and spectators.
In addition, our retractable motorized roof systems are intended to have an impact on the scene's aesthetics. Customized designs blend architectural vision with beauty to make the automobile look so trendy that it gives the impression that it is ideal, especially for the majority of created landmarks. For luxury homes that want to maintain their opulent designs and nostalgic characteristics, these form and function components are a big lure.
But taking into account smokers is also a significant and alluring feature. Entrepreneurs will be able to create a comfortable, weather-proof location where guests may smoke all year round by using the functional movable roof, which can be positioned over a patio or terrace area. For smoking enthusiasts, this branding advantage adds a whole new level of drama to the smoking experience.
Integrating a motorized sliding roof systems is essentially a sustainable investment that offers the maximum return on customer satisfaction and an extra revenue stream. Businesses may design areas where people can enjoy nature throughout the year and in various climates. This sort of behavior will draw clients, promote full capacity, lengthen the working season, and increase reservations. On the other side, visitors like being in a posh setting, which is ideal for their own adventure.
Advanced automation technologies and custom designs for every area ensure an incredibly efficient and speedy return on investment while producing outstanding outcomes. By doing this, it is possible to fully open any outside area. Proceed and establish a lasting relationship with your consumers. Let your brand be used to personalize that experience!Call LITRA Group right now to receive a free quote.

The Amazing Art of Cath Whitehead

THE AMAZING ART OF CATH WHITEHEAD
Blog by Lynne Pearl
Cath has been painting, in love with art since childhood, she would say and has always been fascinated by painting and art.  It is definitely a gift when you see the amount of art, the strength of it and how her whole house is filled with art.  This is not a mild interest this is a fine calling.  Where people usually sit in chairs there are paintings stacked up in their tens and propped on the stairs and in the spare bedroom which no longer houses human guests but paintings upon paintings.  The imagined world and the light of a vibrant perception is everywhere.
Tumblr media
Cath started in watercolour and has moved into pastel but now mostly uses acrylic to achieve the effects she is after.  Her subject is mostly landscape and she enjoys the here and now but always looking beyond to something eternal.  She has organised painting holidays but now tends to paint with friends on a day painting in nature in the South West UK.
Cath has learnt much about technique.  She applies the colour richly and in the style of the 19th century Impressionists.  As I look at her painting of an estuary or of a tree, I am reminded of sitting in an art gallery in Paris that houses Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’.  Towards the end of his life he painted the water lilies in his garden at Giverney, not just a few small paintings, these are giant canvases which depict the light on the water and the lilies at every time of the day and how they change with the light, the sun and the water.  It is a closely examined and depicted art of the nature of change, moment by moment, the transitoriness of light and flowers on water.
Cath does the same with her depictions of the countryside of Devon, with the light falling on the red soil churned in furrows by the plough and the sea as it sits moodily in a steep sided estuary.  Trees become painted as giant friends, with almost a personality they are so firm and present to the viewer.  The intrusion of the human world in the form of architecture becomes monumental and reduced to the bare minimum.
Tumblr media
Cath interprets a world for us that is teeming with life and so beautiful in its colours that it almost hurts the eyes to view.  It is a celestial portrait of the Earth brought down for us to see and be inspired by.
Tumblr media
Her latest exhibition will be at: PENNSYLVANIA  ART GROUP,   Engine House, Killerton House, Devon UK. May 19, 10 am to 4.30 pm
All funds will go to a Ugandan charity.
