Necessity vs. Luxury

Consumer culture is not something that crosses my mind often or even at all. It is very interesting to analyze the concept of a direct relationship between a consumer and the good/service that they purchase. Personally I struggle with saving money as I typically spend things on items I do not feel like I "need", but what truly defines what we need versus things that we just want? This assignment has allowed me to change my perspective on not only the purchases that I make, but my values as well.

Above is a picture of my college room. Majority of the items you see within the picture do not take up most space on the list that I made... as most of the list consisted of materialistic items rather than living necessities. This fact alone caused me to go into a moment of introspective thinking regarding my values and priorities.

Completing this list allowed me to truly understand my role in consumer culture. Prior to this assignment I simply bought items without much thinking (excluding factors such as price), but I now feel as though majority of the purchases I have made are unnecessary. I now recognize the impact that different social standards or social trends may have on the purchases that I have made. For example within the list you can see that I included different types of Air Jordan sneakers that I own.. but is it really necessary to have so many or even any at all? Specifically where I was growing up, in elementary/middle school it was a trend to have the newest Air Jordans, and if you did you were considered a "fly kid"! The same goes for the type of phone I have, an Iphone 13, which was influenced by the idea that apple products were superior to any other. Yet here we are many years later and those same ideologies have stuck with me. Reflecting on something as small as that, has showed me that certain things we believe that we actually like/need, may only be because of how we've been influenced. I also began to think about the influence that your physical environment can have on your perception on wants vs. needs. I may view an item such as my leave-in conditioner as a necessity while another person in a different environment (or cultural background) may view it as just another "unnecessary hair product". The "origin of desire" column showed me that a few of the items I purchased on the list were influenced by social media and if it were not for it, that I would not have owned the item. Aside from this, I do believe that my priorities are (mainly😒) in order as when deciding if each item was a want or need, mostly all of the items that i need to survive were what I chose as my needed items (such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, undergarments, personal hygiene products, etc.).

Most needed item

After deep consideration, I came to the conclusion that my car is my most needed item. Aside from the obvious, that it provides me with transportation, I believe that having a car has made my life much easier. If it were not for this car, I would not be able to accept certain work opportunities, attend important events, and complete my day-to-day activities. This car has allowed me to save a lot of money in multiple ways, and of course gets me from point A to B, so for that reason I believe it is my most needed item.

Week 11 Post - Modernism

In philosophical terms, postmodernism refers to the state or condition of society that exists after modernity, which is also known as postmodernism going against modernity. Modernity focuses on simplicity while post modernity focuses on complexity. In design terms, it means breaking organisational rules, going against modernism, usage of strong colours and dramatic layouts instead of traditional compositions. In other words, less is boring, more is better.

For week 11, we are grouped in pairs to choose an object and create an advertisement from it. My teammate and I decided to create an advertisement for iPhone. We used an iPhone and an Apple earpiece, and put them together for the advert image. As for usual iPhone advertisements, they are mainly minimalistic, neat and organized. From here, we experimented around with distortion, overlapping and disorganization of the elements, basically going towards maximalism while maintaining readability of the texts and ensuring that the intention of selling a product is evident.

I would say that postmodernism is rather popular now as it is praised for its bold and refreshing approach, which gives designers a chance to break free from traditional rules and formality in their work. (Rosenberg, 2020).

Furthermore, postmodernism embraces individualism and experimentation which allows people to play around with combinations of materials, colours and textures. This allows the definition and the meaning of the subject to become more flexible and fluid.

For example, Andy Warhol, a famous postmodern artist whose work are frequently disregarded as anti - aesthetic and vulgar, his style which is usually pop art is able to create historical artistic movements and provocation while showing great details in his work. Touching the merch

We popped into the Apple Store on Orchard Road to pick up some AirTags yesterday evening. They’re a lot cheaper here in Singapore than in London - plus, tax back!

Anyway, I ended up fondling (there is no other word) the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I think my next iPhone is going to be a 15 Pro Max. 🤓 That’s quite a change from the iPhone 13 Pro I’m using now.

With a phone in each hand, I tried to estimate the weight difference. It isn’t all that much. And that extra screen real estate is very, very attractive for my 47 year old eyes…

I also tried on an Apple Watch Ultra, but even I think that’s a bridge too far.

Let’s see what the Apple Event later this month brings.

The MacBook Air now Comes in an All-new M3 Model

After a ton of of rumors and predictions, it looks like Apple was planning an actual product release for the first week of March, although it’s not exactly what some people might have been expecting - with that being said, the Cupertino tech giant announced (sans big event) the debut of its newest MacBook Air models, which now come equipped with the M3 chip, one of Apple’s most powerful computer processors to date. As such, Apple also offers the M3 MacBook Air in two variants, with a more compact 13-inch display model, and a larger 15-inch variant for users who’d like a bit more screen real estate. Aside from upgrades in processing power though, what can we expect with the new MacBook models? Display and External Design Despite coming in two different screen sizes, Apple states that both models come with the same specs in terms of display hardware. The M3 Air features Apple’s trademarked Liquid Retina Display with up to 500 nits of brightness, encased in aluminium shells which come in several colour variants including midnight, starlight, silver and space grey. For physical connectivity, the M3 Air packs MagSafe charging and two USB-C ports for connecting accessories, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Interestingly, there’s now added support for two external displays (with the laptop closed), although it does retain a lot of the usual hardware components that Apple includes with its laptops, such as a Touch ID button, FaceTime camera, and spatial audio support. Performance with M3 Apple M-series chips have always been some of the most impressive processors in the industry, and the company boasts that the new MacBook Air comes with significant strides in overall performance. Apple says that this is due to the M3’s 3nm structure, which packs an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU, and support for up to 24GB of unified memory. Interestingly though, Apple’s promotional product listing compares the M3’s performance to that of the M1 from a few years ago, instead of the more recent M2-family processors. The M3 Air also comes with a 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says is an ideal setup for AI-integrated tasks, including support for AI models, large language models (LLMs) and diffusion models for image generation locally with great performance. For software, the M3 Air ships with macOS Sonoma, which is the current iteration of Apple’s desktop operating system. Of course, this means that you get all the core Apple desktop programs, as well as apps that are designed to sync with the rest of Apple’s extensive hardware ecosystem, including iPhones, iPads, and Watches. The Justice Department is in the late stages of an investigation into Apple and could file a sweeping antitrust case taking aim at the company’s strategies to protect the dominance of the iPhone as soon as the first half of this year, said three people with knowledge of the matter.

Some of the things the Justice Department are interested in seen really strange to me. Like allowing access to the Messages Service. Why should Google, or whoever else, be given the keys to access Messages backend services? Apple created and runs that service. It’s not built on a free to use, government backed, open-to-the-public utility. It’s paid for and maintained by Apple.

Now, if by access the government means Apple has to open it up as a paid service, I could see that. Perhaps Google agrees to take on some of the cost burden, based on usage, or pay Apple some huge fee so Android users have full access to Messages with a native messaging app built by Google. That wouldn’t be so bad. Another alternative is for Apple to build a Messages app for Android and sell access to the service as a monthly subscription. Hey, Apple, that means more service revenue! 😁

The whole App Store payment kerfuffle is something a lot of developers would like to see changed. I think most developers don’t want to pay Apple 15-30% of their potential revenue. That can be a lot of cheese for many Indie developers. There are some things Apple could change to help the situation, like allowing developers to actually tell users to visit their website to sign up or subscribe to their service. E.G. Amazon and Netflix cannot tell new users, through their app UI, to visit their website to get started. For a company who prides themselves on simplicity and great user experience sure do make it difficult for third-party apps to be easy to use.

Anywho, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the Justice Department taking action against Apple and fallout from it.

So at the beginning of a new year, I’m going to remind myself that I’m too old and not paid well enough (I’m not paid at all, heh) to do another year of this kind of work. I should be making writing and reading tools work better on the web. That’s my mission.

Dave has been an innovator all his adult life. Whether it was scripting on the Mac and Windows or creating widely used technology like RSS and podcasting. Since he sold weblogs.com and left UserLand he’s continued to build writing tools of various kinds. His latest venture is FeedLand. It’s a feed reader and more. I can personally see it as a mechanism to follow and find excellent podcasts for a podcast player. Yes, it has an API that could be used for such things and it has full search capability. Bet you didn’t see that use case coming!

Anywho, I hope you get some rest, Dave, and have a wonderful 2024 making the web a better place for writers.

Back in the ’00s you would download a feed reader and subscribe to feeds. This felt a lot like an early version of social media. Google Reader was killed in 2013, which was largely seen as the death of RSS. I think social media generally replaced RSS because it took far fewer technical skills to setup a Facebook account versus an RSS-enabled blog.

This is interesting because it uses Mastodon as a feed reader. That’s not a bad idea, really. It’s such a good idea to have a timeline based reader I made one! 😁

All the stuff Tim says about Facebook and other social media platforms is 100% accurate. Those platforms stood in for blogs because of their low barrier to entry. Quite honestly I’m surprised Facebook never embraced blogging as a true feature of its platform, complete with all the expected bells and whistles, and that includes RSS and posts that don’t require a Facebook login to read them.

Well, things changed a little bit in tech of late. Often, the power shifts in the tech world because of a dramatic new invention that solves an old problem a whole lot better. But in the current era, when most of what’s getting funded and hyped up are just various attempts to undermine workers and control consumers, we’re instead seeing lots of major players lose power because their signature offerings have gotten so much worse.

There was a time, not that long ago, folks said things like “RSS is dead” or asked “Is RSS dead?” First off, it’s just a technology, so it can’t actually die. Second, its web fabric and has been since its inception. It’s boring stuff — this is not a dig or insult, it’s a compliment. It’s as boring as HTML or CSS. I’d imagine it’s been used for all sorts of stuff beyond blogs over its history and it’ll probably be around for as long as we have a web to browse.

Sure social media, or microblogging, took center stage for a while. My own blogging slowed for a long period of time because I started posting little blurbs of text to Twitter instead of my blog.

Now I do that with a combination of Mastodon and Micro.blog. Short posts go to Mastodon and Micro.blog and long posts, like this one, go to my blog with a link on many services including Mastodon, Micro.blog, Blue Sky, and Tumblr.

My blog is at the center. It’s my content, I own it.

I always find this question odd. I figure I’ll stop when, or if, I just stop one day. I suppose folks who do it professionally have to think about stuff like this, especially if they have subscribers and/or advertisers.

Maybe when the day comes that you’d like to stop doing it for a living you just let folks know you’re going to blog about whatever you’d like and do it for fun?

I’ve been blogging since February 2001 and still love it.

It’s obvious some Windows users and pundits still have an inferiority complex when it comes to the Mac. It’s surprising.

I’m an old, long time, Windows developer and I owe a lot to the platform. I spent around 20 years writing code for Windows and I still believe it to be an amazing platform for users and developers. But I switched to the Mac full time in 2006 and have grown to enjoy it every bit as much as Windows.

It’s perfectly fine to love using a different operating system or prefer coding for one over the other. Let people have fun and enjoy what they love doing. ❤️

Here’s hoping 2024 isn’t a complete shit show. 🤣
