The BFF and I are reminiscing about the early days of computers and the internet, and I have to share a few observations.
My first "computer" was a TI-99/4a, made by Texas Instruments (the calculator people). This was in 1983. It was similar to an Atari or Commodore-64 in that it could play games, but it could also be added on to with various hardware. My parents got hardcore into this. Aside from learning about programming, we also had a 300 baud acoustic modem - the kind you literally put the phone receiver on - and I was able to access local bulletin boards and talk to strangers from far away! V e r y s l o w l y. We later got more peripherals like a graphics card and a big old dot-matrix printer. I remember writing school papers on it.
The first computer that belonged to me was an Apple Mac LC that I got for college. It was super expensive and I still have the base somewhere, but the monitor is long gone. I went online with that thing with an external modem... I think the first one I got was a 14.4k. Yes, I did the whole AOL thing.
Internet services were preceded by these sort of walled-garden services like AOL (America Online), Compuserve, and Prodigy. I remember getting into RP forums on Prodigy (specifically for Pern and the Dragon Prince series), running up a huge bill, and getting it canceled. You could chat on these and participate in other activities like games (I remember winning a copy of one of Terry Brooks' novels on Prodigy, but there were no websites or anything like that.
For some time, when the first Internet service providers (ISPs) came into being, I worked at one, answering phones and doing some very basic tech support (literally "have you tried turning it off and on again"). I did billing as well, which was when I first learned that people just... didn't think they had to pay their bills. Three months of non-payment and their service would get cut off and they'd call in, livid. It was an experience. We also played lots of interoffice matches of DOOM and Quake, so it balanced out. I used to use my office computer to download sound clips from movies and parts of songs.
I only used Usenet a little, but it was a thriving community full of various posters and groups. My favorite group was probably alt.barney.die.die.die.
While working at the above ISP, I had to make a website so that I knew some HTML, since they actually wanted people to help customers with that. (I should add there were only like five employees there; the guy who started it up basically was using investment money from his dad. I also remember he tried to make me learn how to mess with circuit boards. I still don't know why he wanted to teach me, but no, I did not retain one single thing from that.) Anyway, I learned basic HTML, and I still have a website today that still uses exceedingly basic HTML.
Can you imagine calling Comcast today and going "yes, I'm struggling with this bit of javascript here, I expect you to help me."
No, because even if you pay them four times what you paid my ISP back then (I think it was around $30 a month for a dedicated DNS), they would tell you to look up a tutorial on youtube.
I don't remember when we switched to 24/7 connections and cable internet and broadband and everything, but I can tell you that I remember getting online, checking my email, going on IRC for a little bit, looking at websites, maybe doing some RP on a MUSH, and then logging off and shutting it down at the end of the night. We didn't expect everyone to be THERE all the time.
Although while I was still with the ISP, I used to get on PernMUSH NC first thing in the morning and sit there all day so my name would be at the bottom of the user list. Because that was a powerful status to have.
My ex and I would trade off computer time. We didn't even play games that needed to be connected to the Internet. We did other things. Can you imagine?
I downloaded So Much Shit from Napster. So. Much. (A lot of it was mislabeled garbage, too. You wouldn't believe how many crappy "parody" songs got attributed to Weird Al.) Didn't use Limewire nearly as much because it was so riddled with viruses. Damn you, Lars Ulrich.
Those days were wild. You could find the worst shit online, but also some of the best. People used Tripod and Geocities and mailing lists and Usenet, just every kind of thing to connect to each other. I had a site just for my fanfic, and I hosted friends on it and even designed their sites. Before AO3, before Livejournal, we were making it work any way we could. I still remember the Outside the Lines mailing list for comic fandom and how people would post full fics on there. And others would complain that not enough Dark Horse comics were getting fics. Some things never do change.
We also regularly got secondary phone lines so that we could use the modem and not be interrupted by phone calls, or have people scream that they'd been trying to call us for hours. Everything had to be connected by wires. If you wanted to game with your friends, you took your PC (and monitor and anything else you needed) over to their house, plugged in and had a LAN party.
Or if you just wanted to browse the Internet without your own PC, you'd go to an Internet cafe and rent one for a couple hours. Sit there, have your coffee and go online.
Everything is different these days. Everyone is connected, online, all the time, and you're practically not allowed to be disconnected. You must be available at all times. As nice as it is to get all our information quickly, I do kind of miss when the Internet wasn't so omnipresent. I could do without what social media has done to us, too. And I really miss MUDs and MUSHes. Text based games where you could RP or just wander around killing mobs.
Anyway, it's been an interesting experience growing up through all of this. I never would have imagined having a phone with all my music and the Internet on it, but they're just ubiquitous now. Strange to think of not having it everywhere I go, and WiFi for everything.

my grandparents like to go to me with tech support questions i think because they like how i explain stuff and i take my time (and maybe also bc im more likely to be available earlier in the day compared to my brother and most of my cousins)
and my grandpa has always had a harder time picking up on computer stuff than my grandma and it definitely gets worse when hes having bad days with his parkinsons or when its the wrong time of day and hes really tired
but its definitely concerning seeing how consistently recently hes been having trouble to an even greater extent with certain stuff that are regularly a part of the process of me helping him (logging onto his email and clicking on the zoom link and unmuting his computer and unmuting himself and then sharing his screen and accepting giving me remote access)
i also just think aol is deeply evil its login page is so scary to people who dont understand the internet who dont have ad block on bc its always like ‘do you have malware on your computer’ so huge compared to the actual log in box which has convinced my grandpa a few times that he needs to spend money to remove malware or else he wont be able to access his email

you know how back in the day everyone had aol emails right
well, I still have that email address, technically, and every once in a while I had still been logging in and checking it just to make sure it wasn't like, being hacked or anything
anyways I can't sign in anymore. because now they want two step verification. and the phone number that is associated with that account is a now defunct home phone number. so they cannot send a security code, it is not possible.
so naturally I tried calling tech support and they cannot help me because, apparently, I did not use my real name when I made this account. and for the life of me I cannot remember the fake name I must have been using at the time.
I think I'm permanently locked out of my own email account because at age 11 I was using fake names to make an email address behind my parents back.
this is. truly not the tech dystopia I thought I'd be living in but here we are.

~ Da Boiyos! ~
Nicknames, personalities, and which game(s) they’re from. Everything is very subject to change. All but one of these Links are dads who have at least one kid in the 8-12 range. Also worth noting that I’m not a fan of any of the mangas (aside from the one in Hyrule Historia), so these are all based on my impressions of the different Links from their games. I may or may not decide to include other Links later; these are just the ones I’m currently most familiar with. Enjoy, let me know what you think, send me asks, etc.
~~~
Wild (BotW): Dork. Wide-eyed and adventurous. Wicked smart (understands all the Sheikah tech even though it’s not his thing), absolute nerd, obsessively documents everything (both For Science and because memory issues). Has ADHD. Insatiably curious. Is actually genius. Loves puns. Loves kids. Loves horses. Is just as susceptible to homesickness as he is to going stir crazy. Fiercely protective, especially of his family. Interpersonal conflict averse (will shut down rather than argue if someone is really upset). VERY blunt. The Fun / Embarrassing Dad to his & Zelda’s eight kids. Makes a point to spend time one-on-one with each of them. They go on family outings (“adventures”) a ton.
Sky (SS): Cream puff. Stronk af but zero staying power. Slepby. Tends to sleep at dawn and dusk, often up in the middle of the night. Always tired. Also a playful menace and prankster. Can be a bit catty, but only when he’s really upset. Self esteem issues. Very lovey-dovey with Zelda & their many kids, will give you diabetes. Loves Being A Dad. Very sweet and soft. But also a cold murderous rage machine against anyone / anything that harms or threatens his family. Possible BPD (or tendencies), definitely ADHD.
Minish (MC/4S): Bean. Blacksmith. Very childlike. Adventuring days are behind him and he is Very Content With That. Loving and playful with Zelda & their three kids, two girls and a boy. Thoughtful, pensive, but makes decisions quickly, processes options lightning fast (had to when divided). Loves teaching his kids about blacksmithing and the Minish, loves watching them learn anything, really. Very Supportive “Be Yourself” Dad.
Time (OoT/MM): Lost boy. Very quiet. Never really grows up. Tries. Just Wants To Be Good. Malon understands and helps a ton. Wants to be a good dad but doesn’t know how. Doesn’t know how to Hylian. Keeps busy with farm work because he feels like he has to be useful or he’s failed. Teenage years were hard. Lots of flashbacks. Major PTSD, but more insidious because he was so young. Dead hand, redead, and moon nightmares. High-functioning autistic?
Twilight (TP): Responsible, reliable (see: “Surface Pressure” from Encanto). Loves kids to death. Adores animals. Got over Midna quickly (it was intense though) and turned his heart to Ilia. Spirit longs to wander but duty keeps him home. Doesn’t tell his kids about his wolf form, Ilia may or may not know. Hard worker. Loves playing and working with his kids. Extremely hands-on dad. Tends to bury how he feels; just wants to focus on the present & what needs to be done. Extremely practical.
Sailor (WW/PH): Marshmallow. Not A Pirate & proud of that (though he gets along great with Tetra’s crew). Prefers to be on the “moral high ground” with things. Big Brother instincts to the max, not always a good thing, and not just with Aryll. Wants & strives to live up to his idea of what a Hero is: a paragon of goodness, virtue, and strength. Very emotive. Feels things very strongly, but is motivated rather than paralyzed by his emotions. A bit of a helicopter dad to his & Tetra’s daughter; a bit too protective & super doting. Wrapped around his daughter’s little finger, knows it, and doesn’t mind one bit.
Roolie (Z1/AoL): Button. Very Polite. Can’t say “no” to a request for help. Very Soft Dad, will discipline but rarely raises his voice. Strict about certain things. Wants to make sure his kids are Decent People despite being royalty (wants to prevent a repeat of Zelda’s brother). Takes them out with him to serve the community to teach them the idea of “serving the people”. Steve Irwin dress code policy (wears comfy adventuring gear to formal castle shindigs ‘cause why not?). Very humble. Still a bit shy around his wife, adores her though.
Captain (HW): Distrusts women, with few exceptions. Married to his Zelda but they keep it out of the public eye. Boy-next-door personality. Has Cia trauma (was her prisoner of war; HW showed the PG version of what happened in the Temple of Souls). Usually takes his son with him (might also have a daughter? maybe several?), tours the country often. Teaches his son chivalry and swordplay, can be fun but rarely has the time to just relax. Gives his kids all the attention he can spare, which is less than he’d like. Naturally charismatic but not so much a “charmer”, more honest and noble. Very Religious, nearly to the point of superstition (but not quite).
Age (HW: AoC): Naturally stoic with a daredevil streak. Doesn’t Know How To Dad. More apt to duck his head and do as he’s told rather than speak his mind. Doesn’t like rocking the boat. Harbors guilt and uncertainty about his title of Hero; wonders if he even deserves it when time-travel shenanigans had to happen to take down the Calamity. Bottles everything up. Zelda is the one spark of light in his life, and he clings to that tenaciously. Combat & tactical genius, but Does Not Do Puzzles. Doesn’t like ‘em, can’t do ‘em. Soft Inside but doesn’t know how to be soft.
Feral (HLT AU): Soft boi very hurt. Like a combination of Age & Wild. Extremely serious, doesn’t know how to “lighten up” or joke around, as much as he would like to. Can appreciate humor, camaraderie, and playful banter when he sees it, but he has no idea how to participate. Does Not Like Fighting. He can and he will, but only when he must. Much prefers ranged and stealth over melee, or whatever will end combat the quickest. Has frequent flashbacks. Extremely curious, but nearly silent about it. Trust issues so entrenched that there’s no longer any emotion attached to them; it’s just a fact of life to him. Very careful with his words, tends to (quietly) correct others when they misspeak. Secretly a bean who never wants to hurt anyone (except those who are absolutely evil, but even then he struggles).
about nostalgia and the old internet
During one of my nostalgia episodes I decided to check on jabber.ru and stuff.
Way back in the day (early 2000s) ICQ was a pretty popular messanger in Russia and other post-USSR countries. And ICQ was using the same protocol as AOL IM (and ICQ was owned by AOL at the time too).
But nobody here used the official ICQ client as it sucked way too much. People used unofficial mobile client Jimm mobile instead. And also used a piece of software called QIP -- a multi protocol messanging app.
At some point other protocols (MRIM aka Mail.ru Instant Messaging and XMPP/Jabber) started gaining popularity. At some point I found out about XMPP and its clients. QIP became an XMPP app at some point, even forcing users to create a "QIP account", providing people with their own XMPP instance.
And on mobile I used Bombus (a very popular J2ME XMPP client) and then BombusMod. XMPP also supported "transports", basically providing "portals" into other protocols and adding "special" gateway contacts to your contacts list. So from your perspective as a user you were just using Jabber as usual, but had all your ICQ, MRIM and Skype contacts all in one place (this is exactly what I did).
But that wasn't all. I also used to join all sorts of group chats (or "conferences" in XMPP terms, usually about Linux, tech and programming), as well as some IRC channels (connecting them as "conferences" via transport in my Jabber account). And this was how I found a lot of people I'm still in touch with today.
There was also a hot new thing I found out about back in 2009 -- Juick.com. It was basically a "twitter for nerds", where all interactions happened via a special Jabber bot, using special commands. If you didn't use any commands and just wrote anything to this bot, it became a new blog post.
While it was trying to be a "twitter clone", characters limit was 2048 bytes. So people went wild here, telling all sorts of stories about politics, life and even writing a sort of roleplay sci-fi story.
Eventually some complicated events led to downfall of Juick in ~2011, and then the tech moved on. Jabber/XMPP and ICQ silently died, being replaced by social networks and their messaging apps. People started using Facebook, VK, Instagram, Twitter and later on Telegram for messaging, group chats, communities and blogs. And in this new world most of these old communities and technologies kinda died. Well, not DIED, but were basically forgotten by the majority of people.
...
Nowadays most of these apps and projects don't even have a functioning website. Many of the projects didn't survive the paradigm shift and the start of the smartphone era. OSCAR and XMPP protocols became kind of relics of the past, old and hard to support, without many modern features (seemingly).
ICQ was eventually bought by Mail.ru, who then merged with VK. Later down the road ICQ was "reborn", but it didn't have anything that the original had, and turned into a yet another messanging app. MRIM was forgotten. Jabber was a niche thing to begin with, though it's still used in corporate networks AFAIK.
Nowadays it's really hard to find any decent Jabber client apps even. There's a BombusMod build for Android, and it's the best you can find, even though it wasn't really made for touchscreens. Everything else is either made for corporate networks or has terrible UX/UI.
There's also Miranda NG for Windows. And also Pidgin and Telepathy for Linux. All three support all modern protocols and standarts, even support Telegram! And even Psi+ still exists, even though it's a jabbber only app. But still -- they exist!
But it's kinda wild to think about. All this jabber-juick-icq nonsense was the center of my world throughout my teenage years. Everyone around me -- young and old -- used ICQ, advanced users used Jabber. I was using Juick and was active and many conference chats until about 2012-2013.
And now there is nothing left from any of it.
Sites of the projects turned to nothing. The actual apps are not supported for many years now. And even the standards were seemingly forgotten. People kind of went different ways since then, and the world has changed. The only thing left from all this old "world" is the memories in the minds of people who were there.
I found my old Juick blog, and my last post here had a timestamp starting with "1 decade ago". And when I was active on Juick, it lasted for AT LEAST five years.
Funny how the time flies and how things that mattered the most to you yesterday don't mean jack shit today. In the end, nobody will remember any of it, and everything will turn to dust, leaving nothing behind.
...it's such a russian thing it seems -- starting a 2 hours long lecture to convey a single thought
Who says AI is the way
There's a reason I'm extra careful in my 👩‍🦼 and don't go out without family or friends. On top of the car thefts and idiot thieves, I'm a bit too low in my chair for cars to see.
Gotta say, I'm on the side of the activists placing cones on top of robitaxis out here. Very sad that we've resorted to that. Maybe they've all read Kurt Vonnegut's "Player Piano" too. That book has basically prophesied what we're running into now. (It was one of the high school reads that hit me.)
Remember that I was the little kid aspiring to be an engineer one day. By high school, I figured it would be in network security and telecommunications. Sure we only had pagers and dial-up, but I know once our tech advanced that DNS Servers would be up and rarring to go. BTW that's also where my security consciousness self was waiting for the online boogers.
There were online butt munches and predators way before AOL and all that. Chats could get icky and you just needed to learn how to bail from the room.
I took it old school and went to libraries & bookstores to find the answers I needed. Even snuck into lectures and labs to test things out.
That's where a professor was stuck on OMG why would you put yourself through all that? Easy comeback, "You have a couple doctorate degrees, why'd you?"
Believe we were at an even level there except I was without the college loans.
Please understand that many of us nerds know what we're doing and it's usually not to impress others unless it can keep our bank accounts supporting us. Even then it's almost a sickness. A Dr House problem that he can't figure out. No kidding, some of us get so deep into the issues we begin picking up habits to release the stress. For myself it was digging deeper into our founder's research and taking over an hour of laps in the pool to cool off and get the office stink off of me.
What does it take to be an art director? For Victor Ware, it’s a combination of three things: talent, hard work, and maybe…never sleeping. Victor has over a decade of experience and has done everything from working on legacy media brands to doing full-scale brand overhauls.
Our conversation began with a look at Victor’s current gig at Wide Eye, and he talked a bit about how future tech like AI and machine learning play into the work he does. He also talked about growing up in the DMV area, cutting his teeth in the design world at AOL and Vox Media, and balancing 9-to-5 work with starting his own design studio. Victor’s drive for excellence is evident, and I think we’ll be seeing a lot more from him in the years to come!
Many people have used AIM, AOL and Google to have a chat with others; Windows Messenger is an old version of the particular. If you have never heard of this program than that means you probably will never ever use the device. You can fully disable this service and experience it severely. The premise behind Log Me In is that you "link" your home or other Windows desktop with Log Me During. Once your home system is linked, as well as remote associated with your desktop as well as file transfer and printing culinary level. When accessing these features, your desktop username and password are required as much more level of security. Response time while manipulating the desktop was more than acceptable. Within my first "test" my bandwidth was over cable but, based on this second experiment which will be in PART TWO, I suspect the bandwidth of DSL is approximately sufficient. Just an easy search belonging to the term online technical support service on the web will take you to innumerable final. At the very top of the search results was PCCare247, which in itself is quite a credibility building feat. To appear among the top rankings, an online business needs to give for a brief amount of your energy and it's really important that fast is legitimate, two important elements among quite a few criteria determining search last. Anyways, the website too seemed great and I eventually gave them an unscheduled visit at their toll free number. Excellent strategy to listen to music for (kinda) 100 percent free. Codifying the human experience, in Mcfuego Megan style
E-machines. E like el chapo. How Mexicans become computer users from the barrios. And blacks. And poverty stricken whites at the time the dotcom boom added a 2000-3000 charge every six or seven months, to people’s annual expenses for a beige box attached to a sort of TV and typewriter.
An e-machine gets you into computing at costco. An e-machine doesn’t play the latest games, or even old games on the highest setting, being computationally “maxed” out by a NIC attached to high speed internet.
An e-machine doesn’t come with any windows programs like “brand name” computers do. And there’s not a lot beyond standard windows 3.11 even with 98 or Millennium or 2000 (if they could even get that on there, NT kernel and all).
Running basic software is a chore for an e-machine, even a web browser, where e-machine users find they can make up for the rest of shortcomings, so to speak, of a costco computer. Around the internet, they find napster, they find IRC, the find ICQ, they continue to get AOL free trial CDs in the mail, so they seldom have to pay for “internet” internet service. They hear about usenet. And a certain channel of IRC tells them there’s a way to put videogames on computers instead of TV, which sounds promising, because they can’t afford even old ones because computers are so catastrophically expensive for subsistence-wage families.
Windows gives way to DOS “nesticle” and gravis gives way to logitech, attaching SNES layout controllers to computers (in a not suspect, completely suspicious way that no one seems to notice, because consoles never grew flight sticks or keyboards).  SNES9X begins to develop, arguably “forked” (tech jargon in quotes) from ZSNES as a non-assembler Super Nintendo, for people who could never seem to get beyond DOS for financial reasons or because of time constraints. Some realmedia discovering e-machine users, find that television and even movies work sometimes in their browser; most of it is pornographic or foreign language (to english and spanish speakers alike) cartoons called anime, but it looks promising because CDs and videotapes are beginning to give way to Fraunhofer’s codec (called mp3) that works on Winamp “whipping the llama’s ass”, by some of the same people from from SNES work being done for Windows (”platform” independence is becoming a big hit through java development) who well know that an old computer struggles with java (correcting the shit “garbage” collection never got corrected) and it’s ok because computers are developing so rapidly (unless you can only afford the one e-machine, the one time in the 90s).
And there’s good development around DIVX, the way the new VCRs discs work on the computer or will someday, even in DOS. And one more thing, Steve Jobs says “there’s a playstation in every mac” (which are not compatible with e-machines). Spawning the sudden development called “open source” software, and Redhat” the thing that comes in the For Dummies book at bookstores. Windows it isn’t, some people say, and the internet says maybe certain things don’t work, but e-machines are “standardized” hardware, and so what isn’t “supported now” will be soon. And apple software is like “linux” but called something else, and it’s ok because software is “interoperable” between the two.
And I should point out that I was running a PII-450 at the height of the dotcoms; well beyond any e-machine, but I was really interested in what the people without that were doing, because I was still playing games from the 80s on my Nintendo in the era of N64s.
A software called audiogalaxy supplants napster. Any number of “clients” for usenet like things that have no subscription cost, replace file trading there, but for e-machine users. After kazaa, today, there is bittorrent. Americans should remember that cartel Mexicans made music free. And movies free. And made linux a free alternative to apple and microsoft. And sponsored (Speedy Gonzales and the Gatos Bandidos is the “only way to ensure execution accurate emulation” they like to say, which, who is to know) console emulation to the point Sony corporation used it. And then Nintendo started at some point, calling it a “virtual console”. e-machine users exist today, a couple decades on, and now they need “smart devices” to go with what were beige boxes. And flat panel phones that are like smart devices and those are called “androids” and the internet can make them like e-machines, with all those same kinds of software.
