As somebody with two hyperfixations right now I’m absolutely fascinated at how alice basically becomes a reverse psychonaut at the end of Asylum
Like, psychonauts go into supervillains’ minds and gently heal their traumas and nudge them in the direction of reform.
Alice goes into rich pedos’ minds and absolutely fucks shit up
anyway i think both approaches are valid

outing myself as a sparkpelt disliker /lh
but seriously does nobody else remember how she wanted to kick skyclan out of the lake, was horrible to twigpaw, and then when alderheart called her out on it she was like “i can have my OWN OPINION” which...is wanting to let skyclan fend for themselves, and who cares what happens to them? i’m sure i don’t have to explain why that statement sets off alarm bells.
to be fair, squirrelflight’s hope sparkpelt vs. rest of the series sparkpelt feel like two completely different characters, and i personally much prefer the former. but like, besides that, i don’t feel like sparkpelt is acting “out of character” in these new books. she’s always been super intense and traditionalist. if anything, the most out of character part about it is the sudden infatuation with firestar.
this is NOT a nightheart defense post btw, i love him but he needs to be punted. haven’t read shadow yet tho so who knows all of this could change.

Recently rewatched the studio ghibli film Tales from Earthsea. I’d watched it one time before like, ten years ago, but I hadn’t read the books at that point. I’d recently read three of the books, including the one where Arren is the main character (same as the movie) so I thought I’d give it another go. As far as ghibli movies go, it’s not amazing. I really like the portrayal of Hort Town and the animation is, of course, beautiful, but the writing was very standard without any of the real magic of Earthsea I felt like.
I think the biggest thing that bothered me was Arren though. A huge part of his character motivation in the book was his love for Ged, which they really didn’t put in the movie which is just… really disappointing. I think some of the changes they made to his character could’ve been interesting (like he stabs his dad in the beginning??? What was up with that???) but ultimately they chose to make him too depressed to the point that he just kinda walks around looking sad and not doing anything. Also they made love for Therru his motivation instead to have their classic young boy and young girl pairing instead of a sort of teacher student relationship as the main focus. It was just… disappointing.
Also of course Ged is white in the movie. But what do you expect.
I love Ghibli and Earthsea both so I kinda wish it had been a better film but I mean, it wasn’t a bad one. The scenes in Hort Town were really memorable. I remembered that part of the film even before the rewatch.
I’m kinda curious what Le Guin thought about the movie if she watched it. I assume she did since she gave explicit permission to them to make it

The constant temptation and promise of everything and nothing in the odyssey. The sirens promise odysseus to know, and the lotus eaters promise him to forget. He could be an immortal, and he could be a beggar. Be known, and be a stranger. He could be alive, and he could be dead. He could be odysseus, and he could be nobody. And the man of many ways tries to be a little bit of everything.
