Slow Mobile App? Why and How to fix it!
In this era where science and technology are advancing at a great speed, people do not have any patience or time to wait. You have to always remain active and alert to make sure you do not lose your users. It is true that most people don’t have the time or patience to wait to get a response from a mobile app.
Tumblr media
The expected time for loading a mobile app is just two seconds; however, according to research, the rate of conversion reduces by 7% for every added second that an app takes to load. Thus, users cannot wait for the app to respond and leave that app without any second thought. Some reports even say that 48% of those users even stop using an app or uninstall it if it tends to be slow.
Hence, the most crucial task is to find the main reason why an app is slow. Only by finding out the main cause can you fix the issue or take the necessary steps to fix the problem and satisfy your customers.
Why mobile apps can be slow?
Some major problems that can make a mobile app slow and their solutions are:
The server speed is becoming sluggish
The sluggishness of your server speed is one of the common reasons why the website takes a long time to load. In may happen because:
You may face issues while accessing files from the disk, communicating instantly, running the application code, etc.
The server may become slow because of the multi-tiered infrastructure, which is crucial for the running of most modern applications.
To fix these issues, you can follow some methods:
You can try to take some load off your server by offering an extra reverse proxy server. This can offer several benefits and speed up web requests by offering SSL termination, compression, caching, etc.
You need to identify the interactions between different components of the application, which is called ADM or Application Dependency Mapping.
The app is not supportive or obsolete
If you are already into the app development business, you may be aware of how crucial it is to update the apps on a regular basis. No matter if you are using an iOS or an Android developer, you need to ensure that the app is designed on the updated version of your Operating System. For example, in the case of iOS, it has to be iOS 10 or 11, and in the case of Android, it needs to be Android Nougat or Oreo. Hence, if you are not updating your apps to become compatible with these versions or if you have an out-of-date version of the framework, your mobile apps can become slow.
The solution to this issue is optimizing and updating the software and choosing the updated app design and development-related trends. You should update your applications and test it to newer platforms to make sure it works properly with your operating system.
Chatty conversations.
This kind of problem can happen when the client makes multiple requests to perform a transaction instead of individual operations within the app. The use of virtualization enables you to build a virtual version of the resource or device, like the server, a storage device, or even the OS.
It can be that the team of the server has configured the server image that has been automatically migrated to a host that is loaded lightly because of virtualization. It can move the image of the server to another location so that it goes several milliseconds further away from your disk storage system or the server.
In order to fix this issue, you need to give a close look at the number of requests between systems where it has a link with the network. You can also check out delays between those requests.
Latency of the network
Your network speed can affect the speed of the mobile application to a great extent. If your network is slow, the performance of your apps will also become slow. So, to fix this issue, you need to check the speed of your network all the time and find out if the apps slow down.
Faulty software development kit and library
An app developer can be particular regarding making sure the best-in-class performance of the apps. However, there can be some issues with the Software Development Kit or SDK and the libraries offered by the vendor that is not in the control of the developer. Thus, it is important to look at the code of the third-party libraries to find out if they contain bugs or errors. If this procedure is not done accurately, the apps can become tardy eventually. Hence, it is important to make sure that you are using those libraries which are reliable, stable and secure.
Therefore, whenever you feel like your mobile apps are becoming slow, you can follow the above-mentioned tips to ensure their fast and accurate performance. If it al seems a lot for you, please feel free to reach out to us today! Our team of product development experts will assist you to build responsive and robust apps that will further propel your success in the right direction!

Ok I decided, I'll send the plush maker an email explaining my concerns. I won't immediately be like "I want a refund" but I'll mention things like "my commission is worked on the least despite being higher in the queue than the others, I've had to beg for communication, you opened MORE COMMISSIONS while mine hasn't progressed at all," etc. I'll stress that so much of it is the optics and I can only assume they have all the materials they need but I've gotten no updates so I just don't know what even.
I just always want to speak up for myself about this shit and then lose my nerve at the last second to not "make a scene". I mentioned before that I even apologized to the other artist I commissioned, when they took months to finish (and they had basic template they used for plush) and spent all their time making shit from a pattern they bought to sell at a con, and then they told me they couldn't refund me bc they spent the money. Lmfao.
I'm also going to ask for a clear deadline. In the original form it said she couldn't adhere to any deadlines which I understood, but 6 months later you should be able to give me an idea.
Depending on her response I'll either be happy to wait if it gets done quickly or I'll move forward with being like ok, I have like no evidence that this is going anywhere in another 6 months, PayPal dispute time.
Which will absolutely get me put on a black list and burn a bridge and she'll probably tell everyone to never take commissions from me because I'm evil and horrible and whatnot. I'm just so paranoid of that happening but I'll keep records of everything, I'm not going to be a rude psychopath I just expect communication and proof that my shit is being worked on. As a paying client.
Also the first time I asked for updates 2 months after I paid my deposit, it took her almost a week to get back to me and her initial response was "I saw your email, I was just trying to think of how to respond to it" ???? Wtf. My email was literally "hey can I get updates it's been a while" 😐

Payment + Contact Info
Discussion about the commission art and negotiations shall be done through the e-mail [email protected].
Payment will be done through invoice. No refunds.
Selection Process
Commissions are not first come, first serve. Rather, while commissions remain open, all commission requests will be reviewed and emails will be sent out to commissioners that best meet the slot criteria (detailed order, proper references, clear idea of what you would like, etc). As I have a limited number of slots, other commissioners who do not receive an email for the first batch will instead receive an email to be placed in a reserve slot/waiting list. Please understand that this process is not intended to be unfair to anyone but is in place to better streamline my work.
Commissions will remain open for a week and then close as I sort through emails, so please do not expect a response until after this time period.
Commission Process
Once the payment is confirmed, I will begin and the client will be updated at each stage of the commission process. Please note:
I attempt to update daily and so updates will be frequent. As such, it is required that the client be able to maintain steady communication in order to confirm if anything needs to be corrected before I proceed.
In order to keep a consistent schedule, clients will have 24hrs to respond for approval/changes. If I do not receive a response within that timeframe, I will continue the commission and any corrections at previous stages will be subject to the correction fee.
I typically do not do commission work over weekends.
The art process is separated into the following steps:
Thumbnails (for complex pieces/comics)
Rough Sketch
Clean Sketch
Lineart
B&W Render (for render pieces)
Flat colors
Lights and Shades
Photoshop edits.
My available time to work on commissions is around 4 hours per day. I try to work on a consistent schedule but between some of the process steps, I may take a break of one day.
All commission wip samples are sent at a lower resolution than the final result. Final PNG files are only sent after the client’s confirmation that no corrections are needed.
Corrections
If the client asks for a correction after the approval stage has passed (i.e. asking for a pose to be changed when the lineart is ongoing), then an additional fee for the correction will be applied. The fee is contingent on how complex the correction will be and the process will be resumed once the payment is confirmed.
Posting
The final art will be posted on my main social medias (Hyakunana on tumblr, HyakunanaArts on twitter) at a lower resolution.
The client must inform if the commission is to be kept private or if they wish to remain anonymous in the post.
After the process is complete, the client has the right to use the commissioned work for their own personal use. As the artist, the commissioned work can be used by me for portfolio purposes.
Any questions, feel free to ask through inbox or e-mail!

Scuse me while I vent for a bit:
Context, a woman I go to college with, who mind you- also an artist. We had class together and for a time, we were friends. They paint murals and have made money off their work, so this is particularly agitating.
Months ago, I’m talking way back before the virus struck the U.S and we were all inside, around the start of March, she commissioned me for a self-portrait. My prices for  traditional work at that time were dirt cheap.  I was charging 25 dollars for a fully shaded, realistic drawing with gold watercolor thrown in. On my page, there are plenty of examples of the work I do- it’s realistic, I try to be as close to the photo as I can but add some other things in there to make it unique. For example, the art trade I did with a real life friend. I did a sort of halo gold background and some cat ears, a demon drawing I did- that sort of thing.
Those are roughly 8.5 by 11 and take me quite a while, even in charcoal. I didn’t want to charge myself too high, but I greatly undersold myself because her request was 11 by 14 and with more detail than my previous examples. I would post the drawing here, but I don’t want her to get found out or attacked, even if this made me rather upset. So, I tell her the price after I have the whole drawing sketched out. It’s her and some pretty insects and flowers, all of that jazz... She likes the sketch, but asks for some extra touches here and there and I do and for whatever reason, I never added more  to the original price of twenty-five bucks. She said I was underselling myself and would pay me more, I said it was fine- please don’t, it’s okay. She insists, I was grateful.
I start to work on the drawing and because I was working on another commission and school, I didn’t finish it right away. I told her upfront that there will be a delay because of it. Then Covid hits and school is shut down. Still, I persisted on the drawing and eventually I finish it around the end of March. She likes it however, she wants me to do a final revision. The drawing is done in charcoal and graphite and the flowers she wanted to add were on her hair. Her hair is incredibly dark, thus I used charcoal for it so adding flowers on a dark spot of her hair- which she said she wanted, would be impossible. As a commissioner, please do not ask for final revisions when the artist shows you the completed drawing. I showed this lady each stage and I mean each time I completed a piece, I wanted to be sure she knew I was working on it and she was happy with it. She never complained till then. Still, me being a bit of a pushover, I tried to add white charcoal and erasing parts and it just looked terrible. The flowers were ugly because they looked unnatural and you can’t erase charcoal all the way. I fix it back to the original state and tell her that ‘I’m really sorry, but I can’t add in any more flowers. They would look unnatural and would throw the piece off.’ She seemed disappointed, but never mentioned this to me previously. Eventually she said it was fine and she needed my address to send me cash. I did not have her pay me up front. I know, I know, dumbass mistake. Look, she was my friend at the time and I trusted her. I trusted her to know the feeling of being ripped off and cheated when someone didn’t pay her or took the art and ran. Don’t trust anyone, ever. I also should have gotten her paypal, but I guess she didn’t have one? Regardless, I give her my address and ask her for hers so I can ship the piece to her. Nothing.
Silence for another month. I shoot her a polite message and asked if she was still interested in the drawing. She apologies, tells me she forgot about it and was out on vacation. ...Okay. I suppose one could say this is a red flag of sorts. I tell her it’s all good, things happen and she says she’ll send the money right away. I say cool, and ask for her address to ship it when the payment comes in.
Nothing. Yet again, but I wait it out in hopes she’d reach out... More time, till today. Finally, I get a bit annoyed and politely send her another message asking if she was interested. She replies almost immediately. Now, I follow her on instagram or did, and she would post pictures, stories, look at my stories etc all the time. So, she tells me that she’s been having health issues (not going to delve into it) and that it’s taken priority and she just found out about a specific issue in her throat. ...
I understand if you have health issues, but you just now, in recent time, found out about this. I have been holding onto this drawing, trying to be polite for the last two-three months. I wish you would have contacted me about it. I’m having money issues right now and I can’t sell the drawing because  I don’t know if you still want it and why the hell did you not contact me? I just wanted 25 dollars.
I tell her that ‘I’m so sorry, I don’t mean to be rude or mean, I had no idea. Health should be a priority but I can’t afford to hold onto the drawing anymore because I’m having some issues with finances. If she would prefer to save the money for her health concerns, I completely understand and will void the entire thing. But I did contact her months ago and was unaware of any issues.
Still haven’t gotten a response. Don’t do this. Please. If you are commissioning an artist and something pops up where you need to get a refund or tell them that you can’t pay them right away, do so. Don’t try and stiff them or drag them along for months. Same goes to artists! If you pay an artist and they don’t do the work and never talk to you for months, never give you updates and then come out of the blue and say something happened, that’s bad on the artist.
This really upset me, I trusted this person. I have a lot of health issues myself and I get it, but you forgot earlier and were on vacation, you had time to communicate with me. If they respond, I’ll update. It’s just frustrating for me. Barely anyone pays me for my time and I lowball my own art a lot so I can get more clients and it’s not even worth it anymore. This happens so much that I don’t even want to do work for people anymore.

Cryptocurrencies (3/3)
What sort of security issues do we have?
Due to the distributed nature of cryptocurrencies, we have to consider the security in a number of different areas and from a couple of different angles. In terms of looking at historical flaws and their relative impacts, I would classify them under 3 main categories:
Blockchain itself - vulnerabilities relating specifically to the implementation of the blockchain (so in the nodes, mining, etc)
51% attacks (i.e. ETC 2019)
DDoS
Doublespend (i.e. The Finney attack)
Exchanges and wallets
Phishing
Bad hashes (i.e. IOTA)
Software bugs in cryptocurrency wallets
Software bugs in cryptocurrency exchanges
Client malware (i.e. changing address in clipboard)
Smart contracts - complexity of smart contract languages leading to bugs or poorly designed contracts (i.e. TheDAO)
As per the seminar, I will summarise a specific example of each of these categories.
Blockchain - 51% Attack
How does it work?
If you read my (1/3) article on cryptocurrencies, you will understand the process of mining in PoW and how multiple chains can form. Essentially, what we have happening in this attack is we have a miner (corrupted) with a large portion of the hash power deciding not to broadcast the block to the network when he as found a valid hash for the block. He will then continue to mine on his own chain in stealth; the original chain will continue to be built by other miners.
The corrupted miner will then spend all the bitcoin that he owns on the public chain, however he will choose NOT to do the same on his own secret chain. He will then continue to mine blocks on his own chain; however since he has majority hash power he will be producing blocks at a greater rate than the main chain. After a while he will choose to broadcast his chain to the rest of the Bitcoin network - the democratic governance process of the network enforces that the ‘longest chain’ is the correct one and the protocol will force the nodes to switch to the corrupted miner’s chain. This miner is then able to spend his bitcoins (that he spent earlier) all over again - this is why it is also referred to as a double-spend attack.
What security mechanisms are in place against it?
The main thing defending against a 51% attack is the sheer amount of resources required to perform it - on larger networks such as Bitcoin you need approximately $12.5 billion dollars worth of hardware which will cost you $8.6 million dollars per day to run in order to perform this attack. (from this site) This makes the risk associated with the costs in electricity, hardware and government prosecution not worth the reward of the attack.
Exchanges - Mt Gox
What happened in the first hack in 2011?
The computer of Mt Gox’s auditor was compromised which they then used to access the exchange and artificially modify the traded value of bitcoin down to 1 cent (i.e. by selling all the bitcoin from all the accounts). They could then buy a heap of these bitcoins at this low price (around 2000 BTC they got), and could transfer them from the exchange. As a result of the hack, Mt Gox resorted to utilising cold storage for the majority of their bitcoin - this means you cannot access a large proportion of the funds through the web server or any other computer.
The method in which this account was compromised is still somewhat debated - however it is suspected that the auditor account was compromised through an SQL injection on the Mt. Gox website which allowed the attacker to gain read-only access to the user database. The passwords were hashed with MD5 (retrospectively, we know is definitely poor) and accounts which hadn’t logged in prior to the chance in ownership of the exchange (by Tibanne Co. Ltd in March 2011) had unsalted password hashes used. You can read the Mt. Gox press release at the time on BitcoinTalk here.
How did the big second hack in 2014 occur?
In a short period of time in 2013, Mt Gox had become the largest bitcoin exchange in the world and was struggling to cope with the expansion. They had expended significant resources towards dealing with the lawsuits from former business partners (Coinlab) and investigations by the US Department of Homeland Security. We now also know from employee accounts that the security procedures were poor, the website source code was poor quality and a number of other operational issues existed.
This all led to the events which unfolded in February 2014, as follows (according to CoinTelegraph article):
7th - withdrawals frozen due to an “apparent bug” in the Bitcoin network relating to modification of transactions
17th - press release regarding a solution they had found to solve this “bug” which would be applied shortly
23rd - the CEO of Mt. Gox, Mark Karpeles, resigned from the Bitcoin Foundation and disappeared from Twitter
24th - trading was suspended and an internal document leaked claiming they were insolvent; missing 744,408 bitcoins (it was a crisis strategy draft)
28th - Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo and in the US on March 9th
They haven’t been particularly transparent regarding the cause of the second hack, however some information has been pieced together. It is believed that Mt. Gox’s hot wallet private keys were stolen from a wallet.dat file near the end of 2011. Throughout 2012 and 2013, the hacker emptied the wallets associated with the private keys, however Mt. Gox’s systems interpreted this is deposits for some reason. Towards the end of 2013, the hacker had stolen over 600,000 BTC; a large proportion of this ended up on BTC-E. This exchange was essentially responsible for laundering half the funds associated from the hack; it was taken down in 2017 by the US Justice Department.
Smart Contracts
What is a smart contract?
A contract is an agreement between two parties which will be binding in some point in the future. The difference in the case of smart contracts with blockchain is that it makes the execution of the contract trustless - we don’t need a third party. Some restrictions are imposed when we make them decentralised; they need to be unable to access data outside the program (to prevent malicious activity) and they need to be deterministic (so nodes in the network can still verify blocks).
Why are these contracts so prone to errors?
The majority of smart contracts we know today are built upon the Ethereum blockchain; it uses a Turing-complete smart contract language known as Solidity. This differs from traditional contracts in the sense you are to solve any reasonable computational problem. It also comes at the cost of increasing complexity; there is an increasing number of ways the flow of the contract can occur and thus they are very difficult to get right. We already know that writing ‘secure’ code is hard, but when you have money directly on the line it becomes even more important.
What was the DAO?
The DAO (Decentralised Autonomous Organisation) was an organisation built on top of Ethereum which ran completely through smart contracts on the platforms. In the token offering, users were able to send ETH to a particular address and receive DAO tokens in return. Anyone was able to make a pitch to the community, and people could vote with their DAO tokens whether to make an investment. If a project was successful as a result of the DAO, it would then return profits to the investors.
How was the smart contract code in the DAO exploited?
One of the developers announced on the 12th of June that they had discovered a recursive bug call in the DAO contract, however emphasised that no funds were at risk. An attacker managed to find a way on the 18th of June to abuse this recursive bug call to continuously send funds to a child DAO under their control. The process was as follows (source):
(1) Propose a split and wait for the voting period to expire
(2) Call splitDAO()
Tumblr media
(3) Let createTokenProxy() send your new DAO its share of tokens
(4) Ensure the DAO calls withdrawRewardFor() before updating your balance and after doing (3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(5) Call splitDAO() again with the same parameters while (4) is occurring
(6) DAO will repeat steps (3) and (4) to give you the child tokens again
(7) Go back to (5) as many times as you like
So in summary, the problem all stems from the fact that you get your reward in the child DAO before subtracting from the original balance. The stack was actually limited to 128 on Ethereum at the time, so he wasn’t able to continue these calls forever. The attacker managed to get around this by using the handy transfer() function, so he could quickly move the funds out to another account he controlled. Then he could move it back into the original account and repeat the process.
What happened after the hack?
The attacker managed to steal ETH worth up to 250 million USD; they actually stopped after draining around 1/3 of the DAO’s funds. It started a big debate among members of the Ethereum community as to how they could respond to this attack. One side fought for the immutability (’code is law’) of the blockchain and argued that we shouldn’t fork to take away the funds from the attacker. The other side wanted to fork the chain to return all the funds. The miners were divided on the proposals (a contentious hard fork) so we ended with two chains - Ethereum Classic (ETC) and Ethereum (ETH).

Luis Scammer Man Cameraman Diaz
So, I was scammed out of payment on a videography job by a guy named Luis Enrique Diaz Alvarez, trading under the business name “High Structure Studios Ltd” and social media handle @luiscamerman. His business is currently registered to 18 Capel St, Dublin 1, although he doesn’t appear to have his CRO filings at all up to date. I’m gonna keep this as simple and factual as possible because it’s just too long and irritating a saga otherwise.
When this is published I will show it to Luis and I know he will respond by trying to confuse people*, muddy the waters, and obfuscate the whole thing just enough for them to think “oh, I’m not sure what to believe now, I better give him the benefit of the doubt”, and he will try to get off the hook this way. But, nah. He did what he did, I’m gonna tell the truth about it.
(*This is the tactic he will use to try confuse the issue: At a point months after I finished the work for him and after he agreed to pay me, he got angry with my impatient tone when requesting payment and he suddenly decided to claim he didn’t like the quality of the files I produced. Luckily I have very straightforward evidence showing him agreeing payment is due - ZERO complaints about the video quality all along - and acknowledging he delivered to the client - who also paid him.)
So, below is a chronology what happened between us, with links to screenshots of everything, which I highly encourage you to click and see for yourself everything he said. 2018 Apr 26: Luis posted about needing camera operator (own gear) to capture an event for one evening. We messaged on facebook agreeing on €120 for me to film 1 camera with audio just via XLR input from the venue sound desk. In person
early May 2018: After some back and forth for a few days successfully retrieving an original copy of a file that he got a corrupted copy of, I got Luis the files I captured of the event (a theatre performance called ‘Live Collision’ run by a woman named Lynette, who has to her credit been very supportive to me throughout this). Note that surplus to the job specs we agreed, as a bonus I also gave b-cam files and extra audio files I captured on an additional Zoom audio recorder. Turns out he even needed the extra bonus audio I gave - because the XLR desk audio input he actually asked for didn’t suit him or something - and he later got me to help him sync up the audio to some of the video files. No problems.
early May: I first invoice Luis, to his ‘High Structure Studios’ business as instructed by him, via paypal. Here’s a screenshot showing when the original invoice went to him, plus the MANY reminders sent on it since then
May 25: Luis confirmed he got all the files and delivered to the client (Lynette who runs the Live Collision theatre event). May 28: I reply saying “no problem”, “glad it worked, cheers!” and I am naively believing at this point that he’s about to pay me for the job
Let’s pause here to take note that he has no complaints about the ‘quality’ of the videos I captured.
June 6: Luis sends me a link to some random hyperlapse video he’d like me to check out and click ‘Like’ on. Not something you really ask of someone you have no intention of paying for their work, is it?
June 20: I message Luis to ask if he has any update on the payment for this job. I mention the reminder on the invoice I sent him. Luis replies with a voice message saying he’s just waiting to hear back from the client (Live Collision/Lynette) and will update me then. I especially like how in this audio he talks about how annoying it is for him that he didn’t get paid yet after putting in his time (just like I did) working to get the video delivered to the client.
Let’s pause again to take note, again, that he is talking about paying me soon with STILL no complaints about the ‘quality’ of video I captured. I’m told so far I just need to wait a bit and will get paid in full.
June 21: He messages me again to say he’s still waiting on response from the client (the implication being that he isn’t paying me yet)
Jul ~18: We’re in July now. Not April, Not May, Not June. but mid-July. Feel old yet? After a couple more of the exact same polite reminders from me, re-sent invoices, and vague answers from Luis leading me to believe he would pay any day now (saying “a client from a different job is about to pay me so I will send you the money then” etc). He said stuff about having to spend his money on “CRO fees”, and on paying his “accountant”, and is still talking about having not been paid by the Client. I start to realise he might be just leading me on forever with excuses
Pause #3, for recall that he still has no complaint about the video quality and is promising to pay me very soon
Jul ~19: desperate and losing hope, I messaged Live Collision (the client) instagram account to give my contact details and explain the situation, asking if it might be acceptable to break off my relatively tiny portion of the overall fee and get this paid to me, since I had delivered on the job.
then, Lynette from Live Collision actually called me back and explained she had DEFINITELY already paid Luis for this particular job, and anything he was claiming about not being paid yet could only relate to a totally different event that happened earlier in April and had nothing to do with me. She was very helpful, I thanked her for getting back to me, apologised for having to bother her, and she wished me luck in getting my payment from Luis sorted. Totally hassle-free communication, huge credit to Lynette for being so supportive and nice.
Jul ~19: hugely frustrated because of finding out Luis was lying, I messaged him to say that the client told me the truth and if things drag on until August, I will go public and talk to others about what he’s done, and expect this to cost him business to the tune of at least the amount of money he owes, if not much more. Luis responded with a few different reactions at this point. There’s the audio message of him telling me to go fuck myself and calling my behaviour stupid. There’s the whatsapp messages of him saying he didn’t “want” to give me the job in the first place, and claiming he “knows stories” about me. There’s the whatsapp msg of him saying “until I get paid no one else gets paid [...] that’s how the business goes”. Note that it’s this point, clearly angry and hoping to insult me, he first tries to say he didn’t like the quality of video I captured. In any case, he ends by saying he’ll get back to me once he’s got the funds.
Aug ~15: after Luis posts a similar gig, in the facebook group “Film Network Ireland, looking for a “paid” Camera operator to work for him, he gets into a disagreement with another facebook user who then makes a post warning everyone about dealing with Luis. On this post I add my own comments, in a very factual and straightforward style, stating what happened to me with Luis so far. Luis eventually comes on commenting criticism at both of us and gets a friend of his who admins the facebook group to delete all evidence of these arguments against him. Luis later refers to my facebook comments as “rants”.

With Covid-19 and Social distancing being the new normal and Virtual Events being the latest response to traditional events being outlawed, everyone has taken to the internet for connection and celebration. Virtual Zoom Parties, IG Lives, Twitch Streams, and Mixcloud Broadcasts have become the new night clubs where party goers can jump from room to room within a couple of clicks.
A virtual night out might now include Club Quarantine with D Nice, a Zoom Party for Toca Tuesdays with Tony Touch, a Saturday Night IG/ZOOM Dance Party with @HouseOfYes, Virtual Festivals on Twitch and Virtual Concerts and DJ Sets in Fortnite! All right from your couch and in a series of clicks. Online it’s all happening right now when it comes to events and entertainment. I, myself, have now hosted and performed for a series of Virtual Birthday Parties, Virtual Corporate Celebrations, Virtual Workshops, Virtual Networking Groups, and even a Virtual Group DJ Set with the Sinister Syndicate Crew which was broadcasted out to facebook and live to join over Zoom.
I’ve watched some of my favorite bands like GoldFinger re-release live songs recorded safer at home from their individual home studious. And can we just take a moment and enjoy the epic Verzuz battles that have brought some of our musical greats together. Jill Scott and Erykah Badu gave us LIFE in the most recent installment of the Verzuz series of IG Battles. The possibilities are quite endless when it comes to events and entertainment in the online space.
Similar to all of the good that we’ve seen, the internet and technology have produced some rather ugly and awkward moments for virtual event goers and producers as well. By now, I’m sure you’ve attended at least one event that turned into a constant sound check, experienced one awkward zoom moment, or at least you saw the Teddy Riley and Baby Face Verzuz fail where poor tech required the whole event be scrapped and rescheduled. Needless to say, I’m sure you clicked on this article because you don’t want that awkward experience to happen to you. Keep reading for 5 Tips (plus some pro-tip extras) to make sure that next awkward moment doesn’t happen to you.
1. Plan Your Event! The importance of planning, especially in the online space, and especially if you’ve got multiple things going on in the course of your event, CANNOT BE OVERSTATED, I personally like to have a run of show ( itinerary or timeline ) that tells me what should be happening through the course of the event. Here’s a couple of examples:
Virtual Networking Event 5:00p — 5:15p — Introduction with Live Stream out to Facebook (no music) 5:15–5:30 — music / host introduction 5:30–5:45 — Break Out Room Networking Activity / DJ in main room 5:45–6:50 — DJ with Networking Activity 6:50–7:00 — Debrief and Closing (no music) Virtual Birthday Party 7:00–7:10 — Background music while guests are joining 7:10 — Slide Show for the Birthday Girl 7:15 — Grand Entrance with Music 7:20–7:30 — Group Introductions 7:30–8:00 — Birthday Girl Trivia Game 8:00–9:00 — Dance Party with DJ
Virtual Events and Parties are very much like live shows. It makes for a much smoother end user experience when there’s some kind of plan and someone’s taking the lead to move things ahead. An extra pro-tip that helps to move things along is to have someone as a dedicated host or Emcee to help with transitioning between activities. In the Virtual Networking event outlined above, the Client was the host and I followed her lead and the itinerary. For the Birthday Party, I hosted so I was able to make the transitions between activities planned before hand, and the client was able to just enjoy her party. In another event I did, there was no host, but each performer was supposed to introduce the next performer — only someone forgot and it made things kind of awkward.
2. Test the Technology — Another Step that in the virtual space cannot be over stated. [Remember Teddy Riley… 🙁 ] Once you’ve determined your event and the timeline of your event, it’s time to commit to the tech and test it. Some things you should be considering:
1. Where will you host the event? (Zoom, IG, Facebook, GoToMeeting, House Party, etc)
2. What are the technical requirements and capabilities of that tech as it relates to your event? (is there going to be sound other than people talking? Will anyone be performing, etc) Something as simple as broadcasting music can be a little more complicated to get the desired affect in the online space.
3. When can you test? (Make sure to do this well in advance of the event so you’ve got time to troubleshoot if something doesn’t work right the first time) I can personally tell you there’s nothing worse than trying to troubleshoot tech that doesn’t work while the clock steadily ticks down to start time.
A when testing is to join the test from a different device than the one you’re broadcasting on so you can get a feel for the actual audience experience. What seems fine from an AV perspective on your broadcasting device may be very different than what the end user is experiencing. Another — pretty much anything you’ll come across can worked out with a youtube video. I’ve been able to find tutorials on fixing a blue screen on a pc to setting up OBS software to broadcasting OBS to Zoom and beyond. When it comes to troubleshooting, YouTube and Google are your best friends. Use them.
3. Sound Advice — It’s important to note that sound on the end user side isn’t automatically the same as what you hear on your side. Our devices and the programs we are using to stream have compressors that change the integrity of the sound. Strength and stability of internet connection for both the broadcaster and the viewer can also have a negative impact on sound. Also noteworthy, on almost every broadcasting platform, there’s a slight delay from broadcaster to viewer.
I played a party recently where the host wanted me to play background music for the solo singers and dancers. We had to work out that each performer, especially the singers, would be responsible for broadcasting their own accompanying music to help eliminate the problem of delay and competing audio. For example, notice on Zoom that it’s difficult to hear multiple speakers at the same time. If I’m playing audio and a singer is singing to what they hear, what the user hears will be delayed and out of sync. Also there will be audio fall out between both contributing sound as Zoom tries to toggle between each to determine who’s audio to project.
When I’m playing music, I’m able to get the best quality of sound by plugging my DJ gear directly into my broadcasting device using an audio interface. When broadcasting with a phone, many DJ’s are using an IRIG system that allows XLR or Qtr Inch to 35mm so you can connect to your phone. When broadcasting with a laptop, many DJS are using a USB audio interface or USB enabled mixer to plug directly into the broadcasting computer. Pro Tip — Some broadcasting Programs like Zoom allow you to change audio settings or to use the audio from a usb mic or another assigned source. You may need to explore these settings and options to get the best possible sound.
Another Pro-Tip — close out all programs you aren’t using on the broadcasting device to make sure it’s full CPU is dedicated to the broadcast especially if you’re using Wifi. If you’re on a laptop, hard wire to your modem from the broadcasting laptop if at all possible. Wifi can be unstable, and those internet related sound issues are pretty much out of your hands.
4. Be Adaptable — Despite how much you may have tested and planned, sometimes in the live environment, things go awry. You’ve got to be prepared to shift on a moment’s notice within the capacity of your platform so that the show can go on.
For example, In a birthday party I hosted on Zoom, we were playing a trivia game. I was asking the questions, then playing music while they answered in the chat, and then taking the answers from the chat and putting them into a spreadsheet to keep score. This process was taking a very long time; longer than we had anticipated in practice. So, I switched my scoring method to stopping the music and calling each person’s name from the spreadsheet and letting them answer aloud. (instead of in the chat) This made the game move quicker and allowed for a more interactive experience in that moment because each person who answered could also tell a little story or make a joke with their answer.
In another example, someone Zoom Bombed one of the events I was attending. The Host didn’t have the waiting room setup and had the feature that allowed all users to share their screens enabled. So a user came in and started sharing his screen over top of the performer and doing all kinds of inappropriate things. The admin who was running the room and producing the broadcast feed was able to quickly fix the zoom preferences and kick the person into the waiting room. If he hadn’t been quick to notice and respond, the outcome could have been a lot worse. Pro-tip — use the Waiting Room and Password features in Zoom and keep your software updated to be on the most secure version to help keep your event secure.
In a final example, I was doing a back-to-back DJ set with a friend of mine who is a popular DJ in London. Her sound setup was completely different than mine, and we’d tested on multiple occasions, including just before the show. The day of the show, however, I changed my complete sound and broadcast setup from the setup I’d used multiple times prior. We tested it several times, but when it came for showtime the new setup ran into all sorts of sound issues that hadn’t shown up in sound check and I wasn’t able to broadcast my part. I was communicating with her privately on What’sApp to explain what was happening as I frantically tried to troubleshoot on my side. She ended up playing the entire set (both mine and hers) while I’d chime in on the mic occasionally and interacted in the chat. Either way, we adapted and allowed the show to go on. None of this is to scare you by the way, it’s just to highlight the need to be adaptable when broadcasting or hosting an event in the online space. I feel like you have to be adaptable when doing ANY type of live event, but most especially in the online space.
5. Practice — After you’ve done all of your planning and prepping and testing, the only thing left to do is to execute. But before you do, I recommend that you practice — even if it’s just with yourself. The same way that actors in a stage show don’t just show up and “wing it” neither should you when preparing for your live event. Keep in mind that the live online environment can be intimidating given that it’s so different than what we’re used to. I find I get more performance anxiety going live than I ever did performing in person. Which brings me back to practice. — You don’t grow while you’re live, meaning that when you’re in that anxiety ridden-spotlight moment, you’re going to revert back to what’s comfortable. And the best way to to make sure that you deliver a stellar performance is to practice enough to make it comfortable.
I had a client who brought me in to DJ for a virtual Girls Empowerment Event who wanted to share a video during the run of show, but was concerned because she wasn’t very tech savvy. I had her hop on a practice call with me where I talked her through sharing her screen and playing the video and then had her practice doing it several times as though we were live. When it came time for her to share her video during the live event, everything went flawlessly and she breezed through the process with ease, all because she took the time ahead of time to practice. You may not have any issues sharing your screen, but if you’re performing in any way in a live event, it doesn’t hurt to run it through a few times first. They don’t say “Practice Makes Perfect” for nothing, ya know.
So that’s what I’ve got as far as tips, all stemming from my own awkward experiences and findings as we adjust to this new technology driven interaction. Apply even just a few and I guarantee your event will run smoother than it would if you hadn’t. “All that and $1.50 will get you a cup of coffee”, as my grandfather used to say.
No one knows what a post-covid society will look like or when it will actually get here, but something tells me that Virtual Events are here to stay. That said, I want to encourage you to embrace the technology. Don’t let the shut downs destroy your plans for a live event. Covid-19 has brought us together and shown us that SO MUCH is possible in the Online Event Space, with much less cost and logistics. Once you get a handle on what works for you, the possibilities are endless. So go forth and practice, and may the Online Event Success Odds be ever in your favor. Happy Eventing!
PS! — Have an upcoming virtual event that you’d like to integrate a DJ into? Maybe you need a second opinion on what’s possible within the online event space? If you’re looking for more information, I’d love to help. Drop me a line by clicking HERE and let’s chat!

20 Scenarios: Challenging Racist Moments
for use in Serial Testifying
Situation 1:
I am sitting with volunteers after a cooking class, brainstorming what to make for the next class for a mixed-race audience. My white volunteer says, “We don’t need to cook anything with fat because these people have enough fat on their bodies for the rest of their lives.”
Situation 2:
You learn from a coworker of color that your supervisor reprimanded her and other staff of color for not taking a lunch break when you rarely take lunches and the supervisor has never brought it up to you as an issue. How could you raise this issue with your supervisor?
Situation 3:
A program participant tells you that they were denied services by another agency “because they don’t like white people.”
Situation 4:
A direct supervisor in a school follows very racist patterns in disciplining students. She reprimands you for not yelling at the black boys in the classroom and for not immediately sending them to the hall or principal at first noise, or when they are frustrated with their learning. How do you respond?
Situation 5:
After an event, a colleague, who is a person of color, said that she noticed there were no presenters of color. During a debrief of the event with the planning committee, someone said that we did the best we could to get POC presenters and it just wasn’t a big deal.
Situation 6:
You observe a manager reprimand an employee for chatting even though the employee was working. The employee is a person of color who often feels belittled by their manager. What would you say to the manager?
Situation 7:
At an agency-wide training about safety, an analysis of racism is absent when the facilitator talks about trusting one’s instincts of “dangerous” people.
 Situation 8:
An organization that is mostly white but working to increase its diversity sends a survey to members asking for people to rank how much they agree with the statement “People of color feel comfortable in our organization.”
Situation 9:
Teenagers are double checking grants in a youth philanthropy program to make sure they fit really standard guidelines. One member strongly feels organizations serving specific populations “discriminate based on race/sex/gender/etc.” He says, “Sometimes we try so hard to be fair that we go too far in the other direction.”
Situation 10:
At a pharmacy store, an ELL customer is trying to buy a jar of supplements. The customer service rep pretends that she doesn’t understand the accent, and keeps saying “What? What did you say?” She is persistent even though the customer is trying to articulate words clearly. The tension is growing; both are looking at each other to see who is going to lose patience first. How should the customer act? What to do? What to say?
Situation 11:
A person of authority at work says that they hate it when people say, “So-and-so has no anti-racism analysis.” You think that she is being defensive because someone has said this to her. How do you respond?
Situation 12:
During a meeting, the facilitator continuously interrupts people of color providing comments. The facilitator even tries to finish their thoughts rather than let them speak. How would you address the facilitator?
Situation 13:
During a cooking class, a white volunteer points to an American Indian man and says, “You know how to fillet a salmon, right?” then doesn’t wait for a response, continuing with the lesson.
Situation 14:
While working with a group of mixed-race children who are filling out a demographic sheet, one Asian child notices that another child wrote in “Black” for his race. “That’s racist!” she claims in front of multiple people.
Situation 15:
A family of color waits patiently in our lobby to talk to the receptionist on duty, who is on the phone. A white member of our staff walks into the area and as soon as the receptionist hangs up the phone the staff person cuts in and demands her attention.
Situation 16:
A white program participant tells you that she won’t go to the place you refer her to for services because it is in a “bad neighborhood” (Rainier Valley).
Situation 17:
A group of staff are debriefing an experience with an outside facilitator. Almost every time a staff member of color speaks, the facilitator interrupts, and interjects her own story.
Situation 18:
The food bank is open and customers are struggling with their full boxes and bags. As a Latina mom and two kids come out of the door, a white community member rides up on her bike and dismounts, effectively blocking the Food bank client family in the doorway. She futzes with her bike for a minute or two, oblivious, while the food bank family waits.
Situation 19:
A Korean woman experienced a terrifying racist road rage incident on her way to a choir rehearsal. She showed up 45 minutes late and had to join the stage right before her big solo occurred, and she was clearly rattled. After singing her solo, she asked for a minute to explain what had happened, and received lots of sympathy, encouragement, etc. A white woman who stands next to her felt so horrible about what her friend experienced, she went home and wrote a message on her FB wall: “Sending love and hope that you’ll never have to live through another incident like that.” This opened up a firestorm of comments from the Korean woman’s POC friends, forcing her to comment on a situation publically rather than sharing it as she chose – in her own time – or not.
Situation 20:
At a planning meeting of orchard stewards in an orchard that is part of a larger park, the lead steward got defensive when a less involved steward reiterated a goal that we try to recruit some POC orchard stewards to better reflect the neighborhood’s diversity. (100% of current stewards are white.) The lead steward rattled off community groups from communities of color that he has involved in larger park projects, deflecting away from the reality that no POC are regularly involved in stewarding the orchard and derailing the conversation about how we might reach out to engage more POC.

7 Things you should avoid for a successful Customer Engagement
Tumblr media
“Customer service shouldn’t just be a department, it should be the entire company.” -Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos
Customer Engagements the emotional connection between a customer and the company. The more the customers are engaged positively, the more would be the profit ratio. Such customers will be a major source of marketing spreading goodwill in the market by word of mouth.Flaws in customer engagement will gradually show an impact on the overall business of the organization. At the point when a client changes to some other specialist organization, it may be one or more customer service errors that cause them not to be renewed.
So, what are the mistakes occurs with customer services?
1. Forcing customers to use a specific service channel: Nowadays, customers communicate via various channels: phone, email, chat, WhatsApp, Twitter, Skype, etc. There is no common mode to communicate, so forcing customers to contact only via email, photos or chat will create barriers in reporting issues on time. In situations like the noisy rooms where the customer can’t make a phone call, or they don’t have a half-hour to type detailed emails. Not being able to address a critical issue immediately may lead to mess up things due to delay. Embrace all channels of connecting to clients. Create an online customer portal or customer hub which includes all modes of communication under one roof.
2. Hierarchy in Customer Support: The hierarchy of customers is a criterion to evaluate whether a customer service department has evolved or not to meet the expectations of the modern consumer. Major companies begin all service requests at the lowest ‘level’ and move on until a customer’s problem is resolved or reaches the higher “level” of service. While this model seems good for saving time and money by indulging the right agent for the right type of issue, it has serious concerns. It renders poor customer experience as the customer needs to explain the same issue multiple times and this cycle delays ticket resolution. This also prevents new agents to learn from experienced seniors. Implement a collaborative customer support system in which new agents can easily loop the senior without any delay and also get acknowledged on how the issue was resolved.
3. Lack of responsiveness: Whether you like it or not, but you need to be in constant touch with your clients.Clients expect a quick response whenever they write to you. Also, they would be annoyed if the platform is changed, like if they have sent you chat and you callback or if they called and you emailed. Implement solutions to make customer service quicker and more precise. Whenever the issue is reported, ask the right questions to the client to identify the root cause of the issue. Make effective attempts to analyze things at your end instead of troubling the customer with irrelevant questions and exercises.
4. Lack of staff training or the right employment: The customer service team will not get excellent results if people are not trained and lack product knowledge.Staff training not only helps your employees but also helps you verify if you have chosen the best people for your business. While you should not rule out anyone too soon, having some ideas about potential performance is always welcome.Sometimes, it cannot be about staff training, but about the size of the staff. Hiring too many people, especially at the beginning of your business trip, can affect your cash flow. You can be sure that any traffic peak will be handled quickly and customers will not wait too long. However, generally, the problem is the other way around. You can consider the lack of staff as the perfect way to save some budget, but you can drag your business down fairly quickly. If there is no one to handle customer requests and complaints, it is very likely that you will start losing customers. Your opposition doesn’t rest.
5. Providing inconsistent customer service experiences: It has multiple tools and personnel to handle customer service, but still, complaints are frequent. One of the reasons is the lack of standard protocols. Imagine that a customer requests a custom requirement and is told that this requirement is not technically feasible to implement. When he calls a second time and another agent answers the call and says that the personalization will be fulfilled. Time to respond to the client, recognize the problem, report the root cause of the specific problem, address the feasibility verification of the requirements, etc. Everything must be standard and common. Customers want predictability and reliability in their interactions with a company, especially when they have problems. Even a simple automated email to a ticket can do a lot to let a customer know that you are there to help.As a more formal approach, some companies are now using SLA with your clients to ensure that a problem is recognized within an agreed time frame. If your customer service promises your customers over the phone over the world, but then does not comply with the arrangements, the customer experience is definitely not consistent and your customers may get confused, be attracted to a branch of their customer service and disappointed for another one.
6. Lack of procedures:
“Building a good customer experience does not happen by accident. It happens by design.”- Clare Muscutt
You need to make and implement some procedures within your customer service team. Internal communication is extremely important for the team to stay in the loop with all updates or issues and exchange information in the most efficient way. The use of internal communications software can help accelerate the exchange of information between team members and allow you to track social interactions between employees at all levels. Be proactive and work together to solve customer problems. Make your agents know your customers and create a service experience that is consistent and reliable. Customer service errors are inevitable, but reducing these common setbacks will be a great help in keeping your customers happy.
7. Neglecting customer feedback: If we want businesses to stand out and build stronger customer relationships, we should focus on finding out how to think like a customer. The best way is to analyze customer feedback on the products & services they are using. Make sure to analyze customer feedback deeply and implement the changes to the level of satisfaction of the customer. By paying attention to client feedback, you are demonstrating your customers that their sentiments matter and that you need to make the items or administrations answer their necessities and prerequisites.Your customers may feel appreciated and show greater loyalty to your brand, or even become your long term customers. Also, keep in mind that the way you choose to collect feedback matters as well. It is crucial to allow your customers to actually be able to express themselves and share their point of view. This will send them a message that you are genuinely interested in what they have to say, and want them to participate in the improvement of your products.

Winning your Texas family law case starts with having a plan
Tumblr media
If you have need a best suitable service your Child Law experience, Winning your Texas family law case starts with having a plan with the great process!
The Woodlands Divorce Attorney: In yesterday’s blog post from the Law Office of Bryan Fagan, PLLC we introduced the topic of coming up with a game-plan for your family law case and the importance of having an attorney by your side to help you with that planning.
Once you have researched, met with and made a decision about what attorney to hire the next step is actually following through with your decision and hiring the attorney. Today’s blog post will begin by discussing what happens when you decide to hire an attorney and where your case will go from that point forward.
Deciding to hire a family law attorney
Hiring an attorney is an important milestone in the life of your family law case. If no lawsuit has yet been filed you are basically confirming to yourself that filing suit (either a child custody suit or divorce) is the best thing to do for you and your family. Things can truly become “real” for you at that point and clients have told me that reality sort of snaps into focus once you meet with an attorney to go over details of representation, their contract with you and actually paying a retainer.
This is a great time to ask any questions that you would like to know the answers to prior to signing the dotted line of a contract. Questions about communication with the attorney, attorney’s fees, the expected length of your case, particular sentences contained in the contract, etc. are all relevant and reasonable questions to ask of the attorney you plan on hiring.
Putting some money on the table
I have already referred to the word “retainer” in this blog in reference to paying your attorney to represent you. A retainer is non-refundable sum of money (a deposit) that you make in order to hire the attorney of your choice. A retainer will retain that attorney’s services for you to utilize in your case.
What does a retainer typically amount to? Well, that’s a great question for you to ask the attorney in your initial consultation. In a city as big as Houston you will find attorneys that have retainers of varying amounts. The attorney will come to an amount to charge for a retainer based on their experience and the complexity of your case. The more complex your case is the more the attorney will likely charge. If you are hiring the attorney the day before an initial hearing in your case he or she will take that into consideration and move their retainer up a notch in terms of price.
Signing a contract
Every attorney has a contract that you will be asked to sign at the same time you pay your retainer. This contract goes over our responsibility to you as a client and also provides you with information about the scope of our representation of you. Attorneys provide a copy of the contract to you so that you can read through it before signing it. This way there are no questions about what the attorney does and does not have a responsibility to do for the duration of their representation of you.
Filing legal documents, sending out notice of representation
Depending upon whether or not you will be the petitioning party (party who initiates the lawsuit) or the responding party (respondent) your attorney will file legal documents on your behalf with the court. Your opposing party and their attorney will then know who is representing you and who they should contact moving forward in your case.
Getting information from you
Spring Divorce Lawyers: At this stage of your case it is probable that you will be asked to complete some paperwork that will help your attorney learn more about you and more about your case. This is, for the most part, going to be basic information about you, your children, your children’s other parent and any other persons who are relevant to your case.
If yours is a divorce case then your attorney may end up asking you to start collecting important financial documents like tax returns, paycheck stubs, business invoices and things of that nature. The reason for this is that it is likely that your spouse will request this information in a process called Discovery at a later date in your case. It is best to begin collecting and organizing this information now rather than waiting until the last minute. The more work that you can do in relation to this exercise the better off you will be. The less work that your attorney has to do for you means less that you have to pay the attorney down the road.
That said, the attorney does the heavy lifting for you
A lot of people outside of the legal world assume that a family law case is mostly lawyers yelling at each other and parties yelling at one another. This is true to an extent but for the most part a family law case is comprised of negotiation and paperwork. Fortunately if you hire an attorney he or she will be doing the lion’s share of the paperwork for you.
It is your right as the client to view any paperwork filed before it is sent on to the court. The name of the game in a family law case is working to achieve a settlement rather than heading to court for contested hearings or a trial. Your attorney should be able to work with the other side on coming together on any issues possible in order to shorten the length of your case and to achieve a resolution that you can be satisfied with.
The length of a case
Most family law cases settle before reaching a trial. Mediation is required in most courts in Texas so don’t be surprised if you find yourself in a formal negotiation with your opposing party on more than one occasion. Your attorney will attend mediation with you and will be in charge of the ongoing discussions and communicating your settlement offers and counter-offers to the mediator.
While it is wise to hire an attorney with courtroom experience it makes sense to value the ability to work with the other side and reach settlements as well. If your attorney expresses no desire to negotiate or be flexible in the offers and counter offers that are made to your opposing party I believe that you are missing a big opportunity to avoid protracted litigation and instead settle your case and move on with the rest of your life.
Completing the final orders of your case
Once your case has come to a close the final orders of your case will need to be typed out and signed by you and the opposing party. Your attorney will either be drafting these final orders or will be reviewing them and sending notes back to the opposing attorney in order so that they may negotiate and eventually agree upon the language that is included.
There are often times additional paperwork that needs to be completed like wage withholding orders, real property documents that relate to the division of the equity in a home, and things of that nature that your attorney will be able to do for you in most circumstances. Much of this is pretty intricate so it is wise to make sure that you hire an attorney that specializes in family law initially. When it comes to receiving child support on time or getting the equity out of your home that you agreed to in the divorce you do not want the paperwork to hold you back.
