John

How I feel about this character

John is, I think, a lot more level headed than we give him credit for. He’s compassionate, he’s trusting to a fault, and he reacts with exasperation more often than with rage or disappointment. He is not my favourite character to ever exist, but

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I am...a slut for platonic relationships..

His friendship with Sam has a lot of past ground, and they’re genuinely supportive of each other and their dreams and goals. With Sam, he’s affectionate, he’s comfortable, its the “normal teenage friendship” he always wanted, and it’s healthy

He and Six are bros, hands down. They spar, they fight, and at the end of the day they can talk about almost anything, even her feelings for Sam, and they’ll be ok.

Nine is his right hand man, guy number one for John to turn to if he needs to hide a body, the “I’m with you until the zombies get me” kind of friendship.

My unpopular opinion about this character

John is not the “boring white guy” two dimensional ya protagonist with daddy issues. That would be Mark, if we had gotten stuck with him. While his relationship with Sarah is unhealthy, it was not inherently so, nor was it because John or Sarah individually. John put her on a pedestal, Sarah didn’t trust him, and they were teenagers! John was a good friend to Sarah, but a terrible boyfriend, and thems the facts.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I’d like it if Frey would admit he swapped out that Jadam scene with The Straight One (which John is Not).

Six

How I feel about this character

She is a queen, a goddess, and could fight me (and kick my ass) any day of the week. But seriously, I think she has a softer side to herself that we all ignore at times. She is gentle and she’s kind, just not in the same way that Marina is.

Sam, and to a lesser extent, Marina

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Her bro-ship with John? Priceless.

But I also think we forget her relationship with Adam a lot. They’re friends! They bantered back and forth for two whole books! The sessions when they roast other people are probably legendary to listen too, and I’d bet that Nine would kill to read the conversations where they drag him.

My unpopular opinion about this character

Not necessarily about this character, but Samix is a perfectly healthy ship. When Six tells him no, she’s not ready, he steps off. He’s not jealous of John, he’s not pushy towards her, he waits. When one of them needs support, they get it. They fight alongside each other and they’re affectionate and understanding of each other’s needs. If your only issue with this ship is that its straight, rest assured! They’re both bi as fuck.

AND ANOTHER THING. Six is not a stone cold iron walls kind of person. She wanted friends! She sook out human/loric contact! She enjoys having fun in other’s company and she can be soft. The only thing is, she’s a very goal oriented person, and that reflects in her interactions at times.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Six, dragging Adam by one ear and John by the other: You two are both coming back to civilization, you’re both taking showers, and we’re all having dinner with Malcolm and his wife before he grounds Sam and I end up having to go to high school!
