Finale / Misc Boxbot and Voxman family Headcanons

First, some assorted ones based off Thank You for Watching the Show:

-Robbie and Sara are totally Boxman's grandkids, and he and PV spoil the shit out of them whenever they visit, but no single one of the gen 1 Boxbots is their parent -- all six contributed to their design, so the gen 2 bots consider them all combination moms/dads and aunts/uncles.  Though, Robbie tends to stick closest to Jethro and Raymond (especially Ray, he really looks up to him!), and Sara favors Ernesto and Shannon.

-The two of them really only fight as product tests, or for fun/combat training alongside the plaza crew -- Ernesto couldn't care less about the plaza's existence now that Boxman's gone.  They're even friends with the new KO's Bodega employees during their off-hours!  Though, whenever their grandpas visit, the two will go right into Serious Mode and try to wreck the place for real, to try and impress them.

-Darrell was the only robot that actually moved out after the finale, the rest all still live at Boxmore, even if they no longer work there.  With his business skills, he's already the most successful evil farmer (also, like, the only evil farmer, but whatever) in the Neutral Zone, and his family visits him every other weekend.

-He did get upgraded to a robo-young adult, so he could live on his own, but it's not too noticeable.  The only real differences are that he’s just a few inches taller, and now draws with colored pencils as well as crayons.

-He also took in Raymond's pet chickens.

-The bots still frequent the plaza as customers rather than just attackers now, and sometimes hang out with Enid, Rad, the backup Bodega crew, Dendy, and on occasion KO.  Raymond designs fashions for Drupe in between his band's practice sessions, and if Mr Logic gets really busy Shannon sends some of her audience members to help him out.  And, of course, Mikayla's even got a drink named after her at the cat cafe, which she stops in to order whenever she misses her feline friends (especially Teacup)!

-All those portraits, the Jethro mug, and the kitten model Mikayla that Boxman has in his house were Shucksgiving presents, as was Peej's book.  PV knocked on the door right after the kids left from celebrating with him, figuring it would be as good a time as any to finally give him that cake.

-Jethro's actually taken up gardening, and grows flowers around the factory, though they tend to die pretty fast in the windowless hallways.  He once tried to use some of Venomous' leftover gear in the labs in order to engineer them to need less sunlight, and the results were...tentacle-y.

-Boxman and Mr Logic are best friends again.  ;v;  Even if they don't often agree on things, and definitely don't work together anymore, Boxy regularly shows up at Logic's barbershop to get his hair cut and chat, and keeps him in the loop on everything that goes on with the rest of his family.

-When PV and Fink attacked the plaza in their bio-mech suits after returning to Earth, it wasn't actually the bodega employees who defeated them, but Carol, who pretty much just took one look out the window at the fight, said "Oh HECK no," and MESSED HIM UP.  Fink stayed at Boxmore while he recovered in the hospital!

And now, some older, slightly weirder heacanons that I never really bothered to post:

-Doctor Weakpoint and Lord Boxman are mother and son.  As in, yes, this person right here:

is the kinda-joke villain who kept sending robots to destroy POINT, even after some of its original members left.  I also really like @the-golden-ghost's theory about Boxy being an ex-minion, so I think a lot of the other villains' disdain for him comes not just from him being a joke villain, but also a former HENCHMAN to a joke villain.  Plus, she was probably very busy coming up with plans to destroy POINT every single day (and rebuilding Steamborg after he got trashed), hence Boxy taking himself go-karting for each of his birthdays, and eventually leaving to become a more serious villain on his own.  

-He still calls her sometimes, and leaves lots of voicemail about how things are going at Boxmore, but she never answers or calls him back.  ;-;  She does send the kids birthday cards and candy, though, and they love their grandma a lot even if they've never been able to meet her.

-Fink did go to KO's school, like in the episode we were supposed to get.  But she was in class 6-11B, rather than 6-11A like KO and Dendy, and they just never ran into her.

-Kinda dark one, if he gets hungry enough, Darrell has no problem with trying to hunt down and eat other robots, particularly his own clones (since it's not like there's ever a shortage of him around, plus their brains are extra tasty).  Don't let him skip a meal, ever, and if you do...keep an eye on the vents.

-The entrance to Shadowy Figure's lair in Professor Venomous' house was literally just kept hidden under a rug.  He also sometimes accidentally left glorbs or his scarf around the house, since sometimes he would lose control and start to shift back to PV unexpectedly.  The only reason PV never noticed is because he's just THAT MUCH of a dumbass sometimes.

-I see that the fandom's caught on to the idea of Laserblast having a crush on Boxman long before even becoming a villain, and I LOVE it, but I raise you this:  Boxman had a huge crush on Laserblast as well when he was first starting out with villainy.  Attacking POINT with that junkfish cake may or may not have been one of his many excuses to see Laser again, and he even got some inspiration to work on laser weapons for his own creations from him.  

-Boxman already knew who PV was LONG before the man finally decided to tell him about his backstory, because of this.  

-Alternatively, the reason Boxy became a supervillain and tried to attack POINT in the first place?  Because Laserblast snubbed him for a date, solely due to the whole "heroes shouldn't date villains" thing.

-Mikayla’s head literally was prototyped using one of Boxman’s old guitars.  He doesn’t know how to play, like his sons, he just owned it to look cool.

-There was a short period of time, like three-four months, between Boxmore's completion and Lakewood Plaza Turbo's construction, in which Lad Boxman and Mr Logic actually did attack POINT and do petty villainy, in addition to their new manufacturing jobs.  Logic was the brains, coming up with lots of schemes and handling all the logistics, and Boxman was the brawn, putting together new robots to fit their needs and carrying out the actual operations.  Needless to say, NONE of their efforts were successful, or even memorable, as they were pretty easily outclassed by other, more established villains. 

-Jethro's arms and legs have been there from the beginning, and were supposed to be for an upgrade that Boxman never actually implemented.  He just didn't give enough of a shit to ever remove them from production. 

-Leggy Jethro is his real mind, and is what runs underneath the more basic programming in the rest of his hivemind.  He just never had the ability to actually come out and express himself, without the extra glorbs' energy.  The other Jethros know they're him deep down but aren't able to fully understand why they feel...different.  Not themselves.  Hence, why they keep trying to assure themselves and others that they ARE Jethro...  

Arya/Sansa interaction LFs death scene S7E6/E7

Something I just want to suggest as an alternative to the main idea of the whole Sansa/Arya/Bran rendezvous pre LFs death. Something I believe to be much more likely now that I think about it, just because in my opinion it would provide a lot more character development in terms of the sibling relationship between the remaining stark children.

I think the conversation between Arya and Sansa during S7E6 insinuates the idea that Arya definitely knows she's being played and says and does most of what she does to find out if her sister realises too. When she talks about becoming Sansa herself and talks about using her face to become the Lady of Winterfell, the use of intimidation seems to be Arya's twisted way of both hinting and interrogating, given her years with faceless men, the tactics don't seem so bad on her part. Of course to Sansa this is all new and totally strange, the sister she hasn't met for years comes back, literally a new person, acting shady and as she has stated herself, she is a slow learner. (Although I don't blame her because Arya even had me on edge- 'erm plz don't kill your sister and totally wreck your amazing character thnx') Then Arya offers her the dagger after her string of riddles and Sansa of course mirrors the rest of the viewers like '???'

I think its actually pretty unlikely Arya knows who the dagger belongs to but then again not a total impossibility. Bran definitely knows (hence why he hands it back to her saying she'll need it later on, you know aside from the fact that she'll be slicing LF like a sausage roll) but obviously the question lies in whether or not he told Arya at some point, before her conversation with Sansa.

Strictly speaking I think the whole idea behind handing Sansa the dagger right after Arya's semi-threat was more of a gesture of faith. Arya laid out the clues, gave her sister every possible motive as to why she might want to kill her but at the end of it all, instead of taking the dagger to her throat like Arya voicing those motives suggests, she hands it to her instead. Now all Sansa needs to do is figure out whom she she should trust and the rest will take care of itself.

Effectively we see two things here. Where Arya is portrayed as an unfazed murderer, void of most emotion, (most of the time, since she's almost always deathly calm) whenever her family is concerned, that changes and we see this with her and her siblings reunions as well as at the end of the S6 finale when she says 'A girl is Arya Stark, and I'm going home'. Trained to be faceless and gradually being brainwashed into becoming no one didn't stop her from remembering who she was- her identity and values for if she had, she'd have no problem killing Sansa in a heart beat, her list would mean absolutely nothing and there'd be no point her getting angry and taking revenge every time she met someone on that list.

Now we have Sansa, who ultimately is probably confused af but pulls through anyway which really does show how brilliant she is as a character who learns her way through things. I think the last thing she wants to do is suspect her sister of trying to kill her and LF really milks the fact that she doesn't know for sure whether or not Arya would murder her, using a bit of good ol' reverse psychology, 'you know your sister best' ...or do you? But then of course this backfires because yes Arya has become this new person to her sister but the same can be said for Sansa. (Hence Arya's mini test for her with the heated convo plus dagger.) The key fact is they will always be sisters, wolves part of the same pack and both Sansa and Arya trust in this, knowing that if there is anything they can trust in each other, it's this very fact, blood will always be thicker than water.

What I really like about this is that, since becoming the lady of Winterfell, Sansa has really blossomed in making decisions for herself and learning to take risks. She realises here I think, almost unknowingly even, that if she's going to trust Arya it means LFs life and that would mean a heap of development for the bond between both her and Arya. The other thing I'd point out here is that LF mentions every motive Arya did in her conversation before with Sansa, when he plays his game which should be hint enough for anyone really that LFs up to something, the biggest clue probably being that Arya had said to Sansa to be lady of Winterfell she'd need her face meaning it wouldn't be Arya, lady of Winterfell, but still Sansa. Which is pretty big if you think about it because that means Arya has zero intention of being lady of Winterfell, which she could easily be without the use of Sansa's face- all you need to do is read in between the lines. Which I'm assuming Sansa does because if she knows anything about her sister, even if she has changed, its probably the line, 'I'm not a lady!'

Which leaves our favourite three-eyed-raven and his involvement in the whole LFs demise plot. Interestingly I don't think Bran does actually talk to Sansa or Arya after their conversation in S7E6 mainly because its Bran's style to provide factual evidence in the spur of the moment. Not a theory with a very solid basis I know, but one I believe a lot more in character for him than any other. That being said it doesn't mean I condemn the possibility of Sansa bumping into him unintentionally or vice versa and then a few hints let loose about the dagger or LF himself, considering Sansa's convenient string of knowledge of his actions just before his death.

In terms of how the dagger actually lands back in Arya's possession, I think it likely to be returned to her via it lying on her desk or something along similar lines once Sansa begins to make her mind up regarding who she trusts, so no physical contact there.

That leads me to the idea then that Arya doesn't actually know whether she is about to be killed or not when she's summoned to the hall by her sister, but it doesn't worry her going back to the faith thing etc but also because if her sister does choose to kill her she's ready to accept it, which to me actually makes sense considering the fact that Arya's proven that she refuses to harm her sister in any way. Maisie does an outstanding portrayal of Arya in this scene, asking Sansa if she's ready to kill the person she's chosen not to trust and then fully conveying acceptance with the brisk 'get on with it then' but the plot twist comes and the satisfaction we see in that grin towards Baelish just shows that she knew the stark bond would trump him all along.

And then of course the ball starts rolling and Sansa's fury towards Baelish does not go unaccounted for, backed up of course by Bran's Google genius and vwala Baelish is no more. Interesting to note that the same dagger used as the trusting gesture from Arya to Sansa was the same one that killed him, it was the bond between family that killed LF and that was exactly what he had underestimated.

All in all it was one heck of a death plot for LF and although there were qualms here and there I'm okay with how most of it panned out. Would also like to clarify that I don't believe Sansa at any point would want to kill her sister, I think she was just more confused about who to trust in this context which lead to the killing of LF. The last scene between Arya and Sansa pretty much solidifies the trust thing for me on both sides- 'the lone wolf dies but the pack survives' but again almost all of this was pretty much my own opinion, and I just wanted to voice some views.

Anyway hope my over-worded contribution to the season finale was somewhat enjoyable- until next time folks aka 2019.

It goes without saying that weapons class was awkward. At least, it felt awkward to me. Coulson didn’t seem to have any problem shifting back to professional after my cafeteria outburst. I, on the other hand, was a mess. My palms would not stop sweating. My heart thumped so heavily in my chest that I thought you should be able to see it through my ribcage. And I felt sick. I could probably pass the nausea off on having finished the ridiculously enormous hamburger I’d had, but it was still there, and contributing to me being a jittery wreck while we were on the range.

I was furious with myself for reacting that way, as I’d always seen Coulson as a friendly colleague, and not a romantic interest. I mean, we’d always flirted when we bumped into one another, but it was office flirting. I’d never put any stock into it. And now, after a cold night on a rooftop drinking scotch, I was strangely smitten with him. Deep down inside, I knew all of that was untrue though, and I was only fooling myself. I shook my head, feeling incredibly sorry for Rick. He no longer stood a chance, and Coulson hadn’t even made a play yet.

I mentally shook the cobwebs off, and focused on the target at the other end of the range. Doing everything we’d gone over the previous class, I took my time, took aim, squeezed the trigger and exhaled. The glasses made a big difference, snapping the edge of the target into focus and allowing me to sight properly. I shot through my clip slowly, but rather than being dead last finishing, this time I finished somewhere in the middle of the group. I put my sidearm into the lockbox and waited for the green light to head downrange.

Unbelievably, all my shots had made it onto the target silhouette. They were still all over the place, wildly inaccurate, but they were all on the black outline, and that’s all I cared about. I choked back a squeal of excitement, and instead just grinned like an idiot at the target.

“Good improvement.” Coulson clapped me on the shoulder and moved to check another target. He stopped and gave some direction as I pulled my target down and put a fresh one up. He caught up as I made my way back to my stall.

“The glasses thing was a brilliant idea, Phil,” I admitted, pushing them up my nose. They still felt strange on my face, but I was amazed at how much I’d been missing by not being able to see.

“You’ve got better focus today too. You tested out of hand-to-hand. I was thinking we should use that time to work on this,” he suggested.

“That’s a great idea. So there are others who could benefit?” I asked, thinking he must be planning mini-class for remedial learners.

“No, just us. My attention won’t be divided in multiple directions then, and you should improve sooner with individualized training,” he explained. I tried not to blush or giggle or do something that would make me look like an idiot with a crush. I opted to nod and hold the gate open for him, as that seemed like really normal behaviour.

“Will SHIELD approve of a hot shot agent like you giving me private lessons?” I asked.

“The only time commitments I have while here are to this class. What I do on my free time is my own to decide. In short, SHIELD doesn’t get the opportunity to red stamp this. You need help, and as your friend, I am ensuring you get it,” he told me. I smiled.

“Well, thanks. I appreciate it,” I responded.

The academy cafeteria was a huge room, with a ridiculously high ceiling. It was three stories high, and along the wall where the kitchen was, a flight of stairs ran up to a landing and walkway, which in turn led to another flight of stairs, and another walkway. There were classrooms all the way along the walkways, and just the way it was built made it feel like the cafeteria had been an afterthought, and tacked on to the back of the building when SHIELD realized that students needed more than just classes to stay alive.

The wall opposite that was floor to ceiling windows. It afforded an unbelievable view of the campus. I was astonished by the size of the panes of glass that had been installed, and had spent part of each meal wondering exactly how they had been transported to the site. When that puzzle wasn’t taking up brain space, I liked looking outside, protected from the elements. It was still early spring, and while the grass was green, and the sky was blue, there was still a little bite in the air when the wind blew. It was nice when we were out on the track, but it wasn’t fun when you were just sitting. There was a large patio set up with tables and chairs outside, but so far no one had ventured to sit out there for anything other than lunch.

Kate and I met for dinner, and took what was becoming our usual spot near the windows. That table was situated in such a way that we both could see outside without the awkwardness of sitting side by side and trying to converse.

“I didn’t see you in weapons this afternoon,” I stated after we’d sat. “Were you at the other end of the range?”

“No, I tested out yesterday. My dad was a cop. I learned to shoot when I was in kindergarten,” she laughed. “I didn’t even have to finish the class yesterday, I just did to prove I was a team player.”

“I tested out of hand-to-hand today,” I admitted.

“Lucky you! I got stuck in one of the basic classes. The trainer told me that the next week that we are here, we will get more intensive study in our weak areas, and if we improve enough, Fury has decided we can test out of our final week,” she offered. I thumped my head against the table.

“An entire week of range and running?” I groaned.

“Did you look at tomorrow’s schedule? Half the day is fitness. Not running, fitness. And then the afternoon is hand-to-hand. Because I’ll have any energy left for that? I swear, they’re trying to turn us into actual field agents. It’s not like I need to run 5k if the Hub gets attacked. I just need to run far enough to get away from the Hub,” she complained. I nodded and dug into my salad. That burger had been a huge mistake. A delicious mistake, but a mistake.

“Not gonna lie. I’m excited that I won’t be in hand-to-hand tomorrow,” I wasn’t gloating. I was so relieved that I wouldn’t have to be dripping with sweat and stinky all day long.

“One of the guys who tested out of range with me yesterday was actually an operations wash-out,” Kate began. “He says there’s a swimming pool and hot tub in the other classroom building.”

“Seriously? We have to find it. Tonight,” I breathed. I had aching muscles from running that would love to see the inside of a hot tub.

“Did you bring a bathing suit?” She asked, surprised.

“Fuck bathing suits. We’re both women,” I scoffed. “I won’t look if you don’t.”

Kate suddenly smiled broadly.

“Deal.”

We agreed to meet at the entry of our dorm after the evening run. I ran up and grabbed a large towel and ran back down. It was not the smartest thing I’d ever done. My legs were jelly when I finally met up with Kate. We made our way over to the smaller classroom building. I knew the gym was in there, so it wasn’t surprising that there was also a pool. There was a thumbprint access pad at the door and Kate looked at me, crestfallen.

“Kate, between us we have the highest clearances on site. It’s going to open.” I reached for the pad.

“It’s not really sneaking if they are recording our presence,” she complained.

“If we’re allowed to be here, no one will be looking for intruders,” I countered, and placed my thumb on the scanner. The keypad dropped open and I keyed my PIN in. I heard the door click unlocked, and pulled it open. We slipped inside unnoticed.

The bank of switches beside the door suggested the lights were not on sensor, so our subterfuge was able to continue, despite my thumbprint clearly identifying that I was in the building. The pool was small. It was large enough for a couple of lanes of laps, but it certainly wasn’t intended for recreation. The hot tub, on the other hand, was perfect. Hidden behind a latticed demi-wall, it was private enough that we would see anyone coming in. I slipped behind the wall and stripped down quickly, stepping into the swirling, warm water without a second thought. It was the absolute perfect temperature. I waded to the far side, and hit the button to start the jets and sank back into the churning water. Kate hung her towel over the wall before she stripped down, and then picked mine up off the floor and did the same with it.

“The water is high enough that it’s splashing over the edge. Wet towels suck,” she said by way of explanation as she stepped into the water. She leaned back into the wall and groaned.

“Oh god, this was the greatest idea ever, Anna.” The look of relaxation on her face I’m sure matched my own. I could feel my muscles relaxing, and I leaned my head back on the tile lip of the hot tub and closed my eyes. Perfection. Well, perfection would have included a glass of wine and a good book, but this was probably as good as it was going to get while at the operations academy.

I thought I heard the click of the door and my eyes snapped open. I leaned back, arching a little, to try to see past the wall at who had entered, but could see nothing. If someone had come in, we had given ourselves away with the towels over the wall. And with the towels obstructing our view out, we wouldn’t know until they rounded the corner to us. I sank back into the water, willing my heart to stop racing, reassuring myself that I was hearing things. Kate certainly hadn’t noticed. I tipped my head back again and closed my eyes.

Kate suddenly shrieked, and I sat up and sank down to my neck under the bubbles of the water, turning my attention to her. Agent May and a tall dark-haired guy were standing there, guns drawn and trained on us. May dropped her stance, and the guy followed suit.

“Appears to just be a couple of the students,” he spoke. There was obviously someone talking to them through an earpiece. Kate looked at me, horrified. I shrugged. There had been no rule given to us forbidding us from taking advantage of the facilities. Omitting telling us that there was a hot tub did not mean we weren’t allowed to use it.

“Ellis and someone else. Banks, I think,” May said, as she holstered her sidearm. “Yes.”

“The pool is off-limits during your training, ladies,” the guy said. I smirked and raised an eyebrow.

“We’re not in the pool,” I retorted. May sighed loudly.

“The pool facilities, including the hot tub, Ellis. Time to get out,” she clarified. I met her eyes and looked down at myself, communicating my predicament clearly. She grabbed my towel from the demi-wall and tossed it at me. I just caught it before it fell into the water, and I stood up and wrapped myself up. Kate was sitting with her arms folded across her chest, trying to keep any part of her body other than her shoulders from being out of the water. And both May and the tall guy were still standing there.

I grabbed Kate’s towel and stepped over to the guy.

“Since you’ve now seen me in the altogether, care to tell me your name?” I asked. He had the decency to look uncomfortable.

“Agent Ward.”

“Well then Agent Ward, Agent May. Would you mind turning around? It’s not like we’re going anywhere,” I requested. May snorted but complied, stepping out to the opposite side of the demi-wall, and Ward followed so quickly that I was sure he was embarrassed he hadn’t thought to before I’d asked him. I handed Kate her towel, and stood in front of her with my back turned as she climbed out of the water. She quickly grabbed her running clothes and pulled them back on.

“Aren’t you getting dressed?” She whispered at me. I shook my head.

“I’m gonna hit the shower as soon as we’re back at the dorms, so there’s not really a point.” I pointed to the soggy mess of my sports bra, and t-shirt. “Plus, my stuff is foul.”

I picked up my things and headed out past the wall, past the two waiting agents, toward the door. I figured since they were just telling us to get out we didn’t need to hang around waiting for them. Kate followed. When we got to the main doors out of the pool, May stopped me from opening them.

“Hold up a minute, Ellis. Banks, you can go.” She opened the door and let Kate past. I raised my eyebrow as she pulled the door closed.

“Excuse me?” I asked, looking at her. You can convey a lot by tone of voice. Mine obviously was conveying the message I intended because Ward snorted and took a step back from us.

“Jackson would like to speak to you. Now. He’s on his way,” she explained. I rolled my eyes and hit one of the light switches, flooding the room with light. I saw a bank of bleachers at the poolside, and walked over to sit down, dropping my wet running gear beside me. I contemplated putting my shoes back on, but it was too weird to think about wearing shoes when I had nothing else on but a towel.

I pulled the tie out of my hair and started combing my fingers through it while we waited. As I wriggled my fingers through the last tangle, the door swung open, Jackson walking through purposefully. When his eyes lit on me he set his jaw and headed straight to me. I didn’t notice Coulson was right behind him until I heard him speaking.

“With all due respect, Jackson, this is ridiculous. It’s not as if she lit a building on fire, or –“ He looked up at me and stopped speaking. I was suddenly very conscious of my towel and my hair, and my shoulders, and well pretty much everything else about my body. I never wore my hair down. While SHIELD was a fantastic place to work if you were a feminist, with equal pay, and equal responsibility, and equal respect, there was a simple truth about men. They were distracted by long hair. While it reassured me that Coulson was just as normal as every other man I’d ever met, I still quickly smoothed my hair back into my usual ponytail.

“Would you care to explain yourself, Annie?” Jackson was angry. The last time he’d called me Annie was when we broke up. He had to be mad to let it slip.

“What’s there to explain? We found out there was a hot tub. We found the hot tub.” I couldn’t see the big deal.

“You overrode the security system!” He exclaimed.

“No I didn’t! There was a thumbprint scanner, and then it asked for my PIN. I didn’t override anything,” I defended myself.

“You shouldn’t have been able to get in, Annie. We reset all the clearances to level ten before anyone was sent here.” He did this quirky breathing thing when he was really angry so that he wouldn’t lose his temper. He was starting to do the quirky breathing thing.

“What rock do you live under that you don’t know I have level ten clearance, Jack? Half the people on this campus have level ten clearance. We have to have it. We work with personnel files all day long,” I laughed. Even May smiled at that. Jackson pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Just. Get out, Annie. Go back to your room,” he dismissed me. I gathered up my things and rose, brushing past him on my way out. I heard Coulson talking to his team as the door shut behind me.

I cut across the grass quickly to get back to the dorms. Kate was waiting at the door, freshly showered and looking worried.

“What the hell?” She asked.

I’m blaming the Postman Pat videos for that. Toddlers are very trying, as they explore and make sense of the world around them. I suspect my mind might actually have snapped the time I’d phoned the ex, in floods of scalding tears, crying that I couldn’t do this any more; that was during potty-training, and the kid went through a phase of shitting literally anywhere but in the potty. I was working part-time, evenings and weekends, while the ex worked his day-job, the in-laws had the child, and the ex for ‘tea’ and dropped me off at work Monday-Wednesday. Looking back, I’m not entirely sure how I managed that, especially during the first year, when I was breast-feeding, being ‘Mum’ all day, and then working 5pm until 11pm three nights a week, and all day on a Sunday. The vodka-on-the-bus-home period was scary, in response to other stimulus, I just didn’t want to go home. (I wasn’t breast-feeding during the vodka-avoidance period.)

It was hard, partly because of who and what I am, and partly because of other people’s expectations of what I should be/do. That’s the crux of this ramble, yet again. Back in the dark ages, when I had the sprog, there wasn’t internet everywhere all the time. The printed newspapers would throw out the occasional ‘Back to sleep’ or passive smoking article, and pensioners at bus-stops would assume a geriatric right to poke your sleeping offspring, and offer old-wive’s-tales on what you should be doing, but that was about it. My isolation was self-inflicted, because I was deranged-terrified, and fearful of someone-else telling me I was doing it all wrong. I didn’t go to any of the voluntary mother-and-baby groups, and the pre-school group scared the life out of me, because all the other-mothers were much older, and seemed to have their shit together, unlike me. 

That ‘fear’, that everyone else knew what they were doing, and I was the only one flailing around in a tide of found-snacks, and lost-Bob-the-Builder-toys, I think that’s part of the reason for the ‘alternative’ Mum-pages. NOBODY is bragging about their child still being in their overnight-nappy at 8am, and to label a vast, desperate swathe of people as gin-addled degenerates is, wait for it, divisive. The ‘femail’ readers, pressing their faces to our less-than-spotless windows, and preparing the pyres and pitchforks, because we’re different-to-them. Are we? We KNOW we’re lucky to have children, and we do have amazing moments, but, we’re acknowledging that sometimes it’s a struggle. That collective sigh of “Oh, it’s not just me, then?” is needed as light relief in these shambolic days. Reassuring some new mother that your child once put the cat in the washing machine as well, or that you, too have accidentally pulled a spare pair of child-pants out of the jumble of shit at the bottom of your massive Mum-bag-that-goes-everywhere, those little half-smiles make a difference to parents who are struggling. 

None of the slummy mummies are glamorising the gutter, they’re providing a view into their less-than-perfect reality, in the face of this tide of competitive-caring, that isn’t actually ‘caring’ at all, it’s point-scoring. She speaks four languages and plays the piano at five, does she? Smashing. Did you decide to use the time you could have spent interacting with her ‘enriching’ her instead, and then accuse a mother who allows their child to eat Wotsits for breakfast of neglect?  

Pretending-everything-was-perfect during the potty-missing, and the trying-to-find-a-shirt-without-a-suspicious-stain wrecked me. I never had a ‘tribe’, or a ‘village’ to help me raise my child, he’s a bit odd as a result, but I love his oddness. I’d rather have my slightly-odd 19 year old than an automaton, he’s not perfect, and I’m not perfect, none of us are. The ‘femail’ article DOES acknowledge that the celebrity-perfection is unattainable, we don’t all have millions in the bank, and nannies and such. What the article does is encourage parents to dummy-up, to apply a rose-tinted filter to everything, and not mention the grim bits. The exact bastard opposite, in my humble opinion, of what we should be doing. The general Mental Health message is that we DO need to talk, we DO need to own-up when we’re not-OK, but the femail-computer-says-no. All must be well at all times, and we’re deplorable slatterns if there’s a rogue pea doing the rounds of the kitchen. (There’s always a rogue pea, the chuffing things get around more than Dora the Explorer.) 

The femail article, whilst acknowledging that we’re not all going to have a Beyonce pregnancy, or adopt as many moppets as Brangelina, sets out a different kind of unattainable. In femail-land, the children probably don’t ever rub food into their hair, the dog, and that bit underneath the high-chair tray that’s virtually impossible to clean. In femail-land it’s all stiff-upper-lip, and carry-on-regardless, none of this crying into our gin, because we’re utterly exhausted, and the small people who fell out of us are  testing our patience, because that’s what they do. That ‘Mum-up’ attitude is the reason for some of my scars, I wouldn’t ever intentionally hurt another person, but I hurt myself, a lot, because I didn’t know how else to deal with not-coping. Sweeping not-coping under the rug just means there’s a massive lump under the rug, and I’ve tripped over that metaphorical lump, and landed on my arse enough times not to want other people to go through that.

Yes, some of us share the grotty bits, the grim bits, and the not-perfect bits. We’re not looking to out-shit each other, we’re saying “This happened to me, and I came through it, you can, too.” offering a hand that might well have recently contained spat-out food, snotty tissues, or another letter from school handed in on the day of the actual trip. Offering that hand, even though we don’t have the must-have-hologram-manicure, or whatever it is this week. Offering that hand, even though the nails might be bitten, or the knuckles near-white from clutching a wine-glass a little bit more tightly, because yet another shitty thing has happened, and we have to deal with it. Femail, we’re not coming to your house, and shitting on your doorstep, it’s you, coming to our houses, and pressing your nose to the window. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it, I’m fairly certain that the vast majority of ‘us’ aren’t borderline-obsessively back-trawling your output, to look for examples of you getting things ‘wrong’. We’re busy trying to hold each other up, to help each other through times and experiences that are difficult. If you still have your pitchfork to hand, come at me, I am a Witch, but you’re not technically allowed to burn me any more, I wonder if that will change after Brexit?

Being a Witch, and occasional slattern, sometimes drinking more wine than the government says I ought to, and not always buying fair-trade-organic, because it depends what’s on offer at Aldi might well not sit within your world-view. It’s not hurting you, though. “If it harm none, do as thou will.”
