#and post rescue— I just know that would break a whumpee even further
Text
Something underutilized in whump. Realizing a whumper is human. Speaking from experience; when someone has hurt you (or others) it’s easy to pretend for a bit that they’re just evil and there’s nothing more to it—
But you can only think that for so long. No matter how horrible someone is, how many awful things they’ve done— they’re still fucking human. They’ve made those choices, they’re not even pure evil. No one’s pure evil. People can do evil things of course. But they’re still human.
And that’s almost what hurts the most

Okay, so I totally meant for this to be done and posted earlier today, but whatever. At least I’m still getting it in on November 1st (for my timezone, anyway.) So, without further ado, my first thing for @comfortember . Hope you all enjoy! Also, I tried to put in a keep reading, so sorry if it doesn’t work. Story is my Spy Whump story that has yet to be named. For more information on the characters, here’s a link on the barest of basics. I’ll update soon with more info.
Comfortember #1: Rescue. Story is my Spy Whump story that has yet to be named.
CW: Past torture, implied Caretaker forced to hurt Whumpee, abandonment by parent mention, gaslighting by parent mention, victim blaming by parent mention, in general bad parent. Let me know if I missed anything.
Master list
Kad has been in this cell for a few weeks now. Dyri has visited him a few times and helped patch him up, apologizing over and over for the torture. Kad just assures him that it’s fine, Dyri can’t blow vis cover. Kad can handle this. Still, he wishes to go home. He needs to go home, curl up with Eden, get warm.
Honestly, Kad’s afraid he might break. Afraid he might give in and spill everything. What they’re trying to do, who’s in the organization, everything about their little spy group will be for nothing. What are they going to do? Why did they ever think they’d make a difference? A bunch of societal misfits trying to take down a huge capitalist company? Kad couldn’t believe he always listened to Eden and Dyri. He couldn’t believe that he let them convince him that he was actually someone special. If only Kad had woken up, listened to his dad, did what he was supposed to do, maybe then he wouldn’t be in this horrible cell, rotting away while his team fails every mission.
Kad is so lost in his thoughts that he doesn’t hear the sirens right away, but when he does, all of his attention is immediately on those sirens. He knows those sirens. Those are the sirens that warn of a break in. No one has any reason to break into this “tech” company, Allen inc. No one except his team.
Kad tries to not get his hopes up, tries so hard to not believe that they’ll actually make it to him and then back out again without getting caught, but he can’t help it. He can’t help thinking that today he’ll see the sun again, be with his family and friends again.
And then he hears them: pounding footsteps that only his team’s hunting boots make, Janelle’s charm bracelet clinking and Eden barking orders to the rest. And then the unlocking door and the light spilling in and the warmth chasing away the cold. Kad can barely think, just experience everything as they remove the chains and help him up. He’s so lost in the joy and relief and shock at being rescued that he’s barely aware that Dyri is with them, guiding them through the halls and keeping look out. It’s hours after that it hits him how much Dyri was risking for them.
Kad finally comes out of shock as they are jumping in and the getaway van and speeding off. As usually, Silva, the designated driver, has no regard for road safety and all Kad can do his grip onto Eden and hope they don’t all crash.
“Hey, love, how are you feeling?” Eden asks, their voice soft and comforting.
“Honestly, I think I’m going to need some time. There’s too many things happening at once and it’s all so sudden and I think I’m going to-“
“Shh, just breathe, just breathe,” Eden cuts off his frantic rambling, gently running a hand through his hair. He holds onto them even tighter, but not because of the speeding van this time. He holds on so tightly because he’s afraid that if he ever lets go Eden might disappear again. He can’t loose another parental figure, although he knows Eden would never purposely abandon him. He can’t believe that just 10 minutes ago he was considering that he should of listened to his father, the man that abandoned his kids and never looked back.
He remembers how afraid he and Dyri were, not knowing where they were, just that Dad had dropped them off in the pouring rain on someone’s doorstep, and left, but not before uttering the words that have haunted Kad for years.
“This isn’t my fault. It’s yours.”
Kad is eternally grateful when he is able to fall asleep, escape all these thoughts from the past. Fall fast asleep in the arms of the person who raised him, who cared for him when no one else did. The person who would never leave him, never mistreat him, never be upset if Kad doesn’t want to live the way they expect him to. He is eternally grateful to fall asleep in the arms of Eden, his amazing auncle and, for a long time, the only adult that Kad knew that actually gave a damn about anyone but themselves.
Eden was his role model, and Kad was going to make them proud. But for now, Kad was fast asleep, his family around him, speeding down the road to home.
