Red vs Blue Season 3 Rewatch
Slowly making my way through my DVD collection of Red vs Blue!
"You can't die! I'm bored!" Donut is so ruthless in the earlier seasons and I love it.
We really needed more Tex and Sheila girltime, talking about gender inequality and workplace harassment.
Simmons actually calling himself Simmons 2.0 manages to be both hilarious and sad.
Yes, Sarge and Caboose team up! Season 3 has some of my favorite odd couples, and Sarge and Caboose is one of my favorites. Sarge being furious that Doc has a higher body count than he does, Caboose's dedication to nap time.
I love Caboose's moral boost! He's great at compliments even if Sarge doesn't appreciate them.
I know these zealots were like a mostly one-off joke, but also like...they could be a creepy potential experiment in making soldiers that can't die, which I wouldn't put past anyone in the Halo universe.
I love the blame game of who came up with the plan that ended up with everyone scattered across the galaxy. Sarge: "My only choice is to blame Grif, for coming up with such a flawed plan. Stupid, stupid Grif." Grif: "I should have never listened to Donut's stupid fucking plan."
Church and Grif in jail is one of my all-time favorite things.
Simmons is such a tech savvy guy, reworking the teleporters to make them communication devices as well! He just wants some love and support.
Caboose getting angry. I mean, who wouldn't get angry at kittens with spikes that you couldn't cuddle?
"Simmons, you get an F in efficiency. But I have to give you an A+ in dramatic timing."
I do love O'Malley and Doc's dynamic. The Do Not Call list!
I love Tex's half-truths about the Freelancers.
Also love Sarge calling Caboose a little rascal and Simmons just seething with jealousy. And he's also jealous about Donut!
Church: There's no "I" in team, Grif. Grif: Yeah, there's no "U" either. So I guess if I'm not on the team, and you're not on the team, nobody's on the God damn team. The team sucks!
I may or may not quote that to myself on a weekly basis.
Again, just Church and Grif together in that prison cell is sheer perfection. As is Church going "Wait, the people outside sound like they're winning, that can't be our teams."
Tucker likes Sheila so much! And she packed them food! Well, the AI equivalent of food, but it's the thought that counts! Just the sheer affection in Tucker's voice as he promises her they'll be back gave me emotions.
And another good moment of Simmons being the one to suggest they track down Grif, because no one else was going to.
In retrospect, Grif has clearly watched some prison pornos. Like... Buddy.
Wyoming calling Tex Allison has so many interesting implications.
Simmons re-engineers stuff, Sarge makes a weather control device. Where's the AU where Sarge is a mad scientist.
Simmons asking Grif if he's okay after prison. Just loving the slow build of friendship between them.
Also big parallels of Church's "Misery loves company" and his willingness to let the bomb blow them all up together to later seasons stuff.
I still love that everyone's go-to explanation for stuff is "time travel."
Donut is too thin-skinned about criticism for his play. He'd never survive on Broadway, lol. But I love everything about the time travel show.
How is Tucker the smartest person in this group? But also Tucker being so worried about Church. I am having a lot of Tucker feelings this season.
I love Grif's devotion to cheesy disaster movies.
Caboose: Look what I found. Donut: I found it! Caboose: Look at what I took credit for finding.
Poor Donut! A grenade to the head and now his hand got chopped up.
Grif: Hey, what're you doing? Simmons: What does it look like I'm doing, I'm getting in the jeep. Grif: What're we, on a date? Get in the back. Simmons: Oh you're so insecure.
I would've watched an entire season of Doc and O'Malley and Lopez's Lair Improvements. And when Doc mentions a real estate agent all I can think of is an AU where Doc meets Kai because she's running her business on the side while in the military. But also Doc's motivational powers in the living room, O'Malley's belief that the cat won't hang on until Friday, it's great.
The iconic jeep conversation is still good now as it was back then. Re-enacting Dukes of Hazzard! "I can tell you what we weren't doing."
Grif's mind immediately going to gay stuff as a favor from Tex. Between this and his prison conversation with Church, someone is protesting way too much.
Sarge's plans are so amazingly terrible. I love them.
Grif getting choked up over hating Blue Team and Tucker and missing the days where they all just stood around and talked a lot.
Tex sounding genuinely concerned when Tucker falls into the hall. Luckily he gets a cool sword out of it!
Tex's conversation with Simmons about shooting Lopez's head is a great example of an eloquent helmet look. Tex doesn't even say a word and you can feel the disbelief and rage when Simmons implies she may have missed.
Church: Caboose, I know you're there. I'm leaving this message from two thousand years in the past. Whatever you do, don't, touch, anything. Apparently you're this culture's version of the apocalypse. You're going to destroy this building, and somehow bring about doom for their entire race. Caboose: Mmmmmmnooo... that doesn't sound like me. I like people. And buildings also.
Time for some actual time travel or at least a simulation. But I do love Butch Flowers, haha. Whose greatest enemy is apathy! Love watching Church just make his own life worse. Also love the bit about Sheila having been made in Mexico.
"Man... First I kill myself, then I realise I'm a honkin' dork. Not a very good day to be me."
Church: I learned a very valuable lesson in my travels, Tucker. No matter how bad things might seem- Caboose: They could be worse. Church: Nope, no matter how bad they seem, they can't be any better, and they can't be any worse, because that's the way things fucking are, and you better get used to it Nancy. Quit yer bitching.
Grif and Simmons and Sarge talking about the Blues, and Simmons saying he's not looking for friends and doesn't like his current crop AKA he just accidentally admitted Grif is his friend. Grif just didn't realize it.
Between the warthog and monkeying about discussions, Church and Grif really are on the same wavelength.
I love the scheming versus plotting conversation.
Ugh, the arrival of Andy. I hate him so much.
Haha, Simmons lying about his math skills is great.
Uuuugh, Andy. :/ Freckles is SUCH a step up as Caboose's AI murder buddy.
"Do we really have to seize destiny? Can't we just invite it to join our online circle of friends?"
I love Lopez's little rebellion-- he might be under O'Malley's control, but he's also going to sabotage O'Malley as much as possible. And tricking O'Malley into insulting himself in Spanish.
I really forgot that Tex straight up tried to steal Tucker's sword.
Military law is very clear in regard to the "not it" methodology for making decisions. Sorry, Donut.
I forgot that Donut can speak Spanish. In fairness, so did the show.
Hello, Crunchbite!
Next up, the PSAs!
Some of these have aged poorly... Like, uh, jokes about 2004 politics do not land well in 2020. And uh jokes about colds and flus. ...Okay, the Christmas PSA where Church destroys the Reds' Christmas tree, tells Caboose the truth about Santa Claus, gives everyone knock-off coal, convinces Church that Santa is now wearing blue and working only for the Blues, and scams Tucker out of a $350 gift is pretty funny though.
I enjoyed Burnie playing himself in the outtakes by putting words he can't pronounce in his own script. And Grif singing Happy Birthday to Church in prison. Also poor Geoff being told to adlib and immediately having Grif start to tell Church "You're looking buff, man, have you been working--" and being immediately booed by everyone, and someone says they'll use it for an outtake and Geoff is like "It's funny! And I didn't even get to finish!" And everyone trying to figure out Tucker's sword and him accidentally killing everyone in various outtakes. And in the deleted scenes Tex keeps making fun of O'Malley's plans to rule the universe, haha. Also the deleted scene that's just another Simmons' self-insert fanfiction, just as a video instead of a fake game in the Fan Guide.
It also gave us character profiles! I'm sure a lot of this has since been contradicted in canon, but interesting that we got specific hometowns for a few people: Donut in Leggatt Plains, Iowa, which doesn't seem to be a real place; Moscow, Iowa for Sarge, which actually does; Tucker's from Detroit, and Delta Commune for Doc. Oh, is this where we get Caboose grew up on the moon, with his hometown being labeled as Low G Colony, Moon? And hey, I always had him be a middle child, I like that this one did too. Tex likes money and scars and dislikes Donut. Okay I know that's definitely not real, but the idea of Allison growing up in an orphanage hurts me a little. Okay, and I know for sure that Simmons would die of happiness at the fact that Sarge's likes are battles, fringe science, and Simmons. Lopez likes oil and unions, and hates capitalism. My kind of guy. Last but not least, I actually really like Simmons as the son of a bunch of right-hand stooges (who probably wanted power for themselves).

Moving your Tabletop RPG Online: First Steps
Trapped behind a fortress of toilet paper, but still want to play Tabletop RPGs with your friends? This is my quick and dirty guide to getting started running and playing your games online. Toward the bottom, I'll have links to as many digital resources to help run games as I can find. I will update whenever I find new things, so check back, and comment on what you're looking for.
Requirements
You and your RPG table folks will each need a computer, tablet, or smartphone capable of running Discord, and accessing Roll20 via a browser. Discord can run in a browser as well, but I recommend using the desktop app on your computer, or mobile app on your tablet or smartphone. Also, I strongly recommend a headset or earbuds with a mic.
Every participant will need a Roll20 dot net and Discord App account.
https://discordapp.com/ https://roll20.net/
Discord will primarily provide video and voice chat for your table. It has lots of other potential for community building, but for right now we're just going to use it so you and your fellow gamers can see and hear each other.
Roll20 is where you'll host the game itself. It is where you and your RPG crew will roll digital dice, manage character sheets, look at maps, move tokens on the battlefield, and similar. It takes some setup, but not a lot to get started.
The more preparation the person running the game puts into Roll20, the nicer and more streamlined the experience. This can be done over time, between games. I wouldn't delay play to have everything perfect, just get enough set up to get started and go.
Discord for Gamemasters
Don't worry about setting up or joining a server just yet. You don't really need one, and it often just confuses folks that are new to Discord. At minimum, the person running the game should have all the players added as friends. Go to the Friends Tab, click "Add Friends", and put in their handle, pound sign, and number. Your handle and number will be displayed somewhere in the app depending on whether you have the mobile, browser, or desktop version of the app.
Once the person running the game has everyone added as a friend, they can add them to a Group DM. The New Group DM button looks like a speech bubble with a + sign by it, and should be visible in the Friends Tab. Once everyone has been added to the Group DM, the game runner can hit either the start voice or video call button, prompting everyone else to join.
That Group DM will persist in the Friends Tab, regardless of whether anyone is actually online or in the call. People that drop from connectivity issues can pop back in by just selecting that group DM when a call is ongoing. If people are having connectivity issues, they can send text messages to the Group DM, add files, send GIFs, and similar.
The person running the Game can post news and game schedules to the Group DM, and people can chat about the game off camera/mic in between games.
Yes, you can set up your own dedicated servers, forums, and communities using Discord, but you don't need to. In my experience, Discord is just arcane enough to confuse people the first few times they run it. The desktop version of Discord will continue running in the tray, by default, even if you close the main window.
Make sure you either go into settings and turn this feature off, or shut Discord down from the tray, and/or that you've left the call when you're done. Otherwise, you'll continue to broadcast as you talk to yourself, while browsing the Internet (to the amusement of your friends still in the Group DM.)
Roll20 for Gamemasters
Like Discord, Roll20 dot net is just arcane enough to baffle people. It has a lot of functions and features, and you do not need to make use of them all to get started. Don't delay play while you figure out how to get dynamic lighting to work, or build every map for the campaign.
Just get rolling with it, hands properly dirty.
Once you're logged in, you'll need to create your first game. Once you're logged in, there should be a shiny pink button labeled, "Create New Game". Click that, and head to the next screen. Give your game a name, and don't worry about tags (if you're just playing with friends). Pick the character sheet from the drop down menu that most closely fits the game you're going to run.
This will save you a bunch of time later. Don't worry, you can change it after you've created the game if you don't like this feature.
Once you've created your game, hit the menu button, and go back to Home. Click on your game, scroll down to invite players. You can send direct invitations to the email address they used to sign up for Roll20 with, or copy and paste a link, dropping it into your Discord Group DM text chat.
After your players have accepted the invitation, have them launch the game, at least once, so the Roll20 servers fully recognize that they are participants. This will allow you to assign them control of characters, and access to handouts later. This merely saves you the time of having to make those assignments at the first game.
While your players are in the game, have them go to the "My Settings" tab, by clicking the Gear Icon in the upper right corner. Have them scroll down and set Player Avatar Size to "Names only", and Chat Tech to "None" (no video/audio). You're using Discord (which is way better), so you won't need these features.
On your game's landing page, there is a place for Game Discussion where you, or any player, can post topics, people can reply, and so forth. For important game things, you can flag posts to hang around at the top of the Discussion Feed. This is a good place to put house rules, leaderboards, game schedules, and more.
There is also a place to indicate when the next game will be, the time adjusted from your timezone, to whatever everyone else has, depending on where they live. Handy!
When you launch the game to work on it, I recommend having the Roll20 Wiki up in another browser tab. I'm going to run through some of the basics, and give a tour, but there's too much to detail in a single blog post. I'll be focusing on what you'll need to just get started.
https://wiki.roll20.net/Main_Page
The game view has three visible points of user interface. The vertical bar of icons on the left, the horizontal bar of icons at the top of the chat log on the right, and the game board itself. The first thing in the Chat Log should be a "Welcome" message with some helpful chat window commands. At the bottom of the Chat Log is a toggle letting you change your role from yourself, to NPCs, monsters, and even player characters (should they find themselves charmed by a dryad).
Also, note the little blue Page Toolbar button at the top in the middle. This is what you'll use to navigate between different maps, and change what players are able to see on their screens. Your view doesn't have to follow what the players are seeing.
The learning curve with the Roll20 interface is going to feel very steep at first, for you and your players. If you're already anxious about running games, this can feel overwhelming. However, once you learn even a little of how it works, Roll20 is a very powerful tool. I use it to run my local games now with a big screen TV.
It's that good. Trust me, hang in there.
Okay, you're logged into Roll20, click on the games tab, mouse over it, and click the tutorial. Watching a YouTube video is a fine way to learn, but this gets you accustomed to the tools, where things are located, and so forth. Breaking through this initial learning curve, understanding where your game assets are stored, and how to control what your players see and hear takes a minute.
If you've ever used Photoshop or any image editing tool, even Microsoft Word or OneNote, a lot of the user interface will feel familiar, functions and features much the same.
Okay, some general tips that should streamline things for you.
Make a character called "Dungeon Master", "Game Master", or similar.  In the Attributes & Abilities tab create several that are going to automatically roll for yourself via /gmroll, or for players using /roll, the most commonly used things. Passive Detection, Surprise, Random Encounters, Treasure, Initiative, and anything else you roll for multiple times per game.
Then, click the "Show in macro bar" box so they are on screen for you whenever you need them.
When uploading assets, give the file names that are searchable in an intuitive way. You can make folders and to organize your art library, but it isn't really necessary. The search feature is robust enough it'll pick through the pile very quickly, provided your file names reflect what the asset is.
Asset0023.png <- No GoblinShaman.png <- Yes
Finally, in the settings for your game, add any applicable compendiums for your game, and click the box that makes them available for players. There are compendiums for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Ed, Pathfinder 2nd Ed, Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition, Dungeon World, Fate, Kids on Bikes, Pathfinder 1st Ed, Starfinder, Burn Bryte, DramaSystem, and Dialext.
A lot of these are paid upgrades, but worth the investment if you plan to stay on and use Roll20 for any particular duration. You'll find the full list on Roll20 dot net, under the Tools Menu Tab, in Compendiums.
Roll20 & Discord For Players
In the beginnning your goal should be to have fun, and understand how Roll20 works enough that you aren't slowing the game down for anyone else. Worry about macros and navigating the game as you play. Definitely watch YouTube videos, read the Wiki, and do whatever else you need to feel comfortable.
But, first, make sure you are using best application available to you for accessing the game.
There are these options for Android and iPad. (Keep reading, don't just grab one of these yet.)
Android iPad
As far as I'm aware, these are horrible, 1-2 star applications with problems, and lacking in support. Only resort to these options if you've tried every browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) available for your platform, and  can't get it on your desktop or tablet.
Likewise, do this for Discord.
Make sure you are accessing the Discord App using the best option for your platform. I have yet to find a platform where Discord isn't pretty great. Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux, all awesome with a dedicated app, or in the browser.
Figure out how to mute yourself, and be courteous to other people participating. No one wants to hear you eating chips or yelling at your kids. ;-D Also, perform and audio test with your computer and headset. Have a friend or the game master meet you online and make sure everything is working properly.
This is, literally, 75% of the battle for a game master running their first online game. Just getting people online with the right software, hardware configured properly, with a modicum of understanding of how it all works. The absolute best thing a player can do is be responsible for learning and helping others learn Discord and Roll20.
Preparing games for Roll20 takes more effort for the dungeon master than normal. You can help this along by writing background stories, doing illustrations of your character, or just making a wish list of magical items your character hopes to encounter. Taking some of the guesswork out of making the game fun for you, will greatly streamline the process for the game master.
Likewise, organizing games online is time consuming and stressful as compared to just meeting at the local game or board game cafe. Make sure you communicate with the game master your availability, and be on time for games. This sets a standard for other players. Supporting the table with your reliable presence makes it nicer for you, and everyone else.
Build some custom emote macros for your character in the Attributes & Abilities tab or your character sheet in the Journal tab above the chat log. Whenever my Warlock uses one of his class abilities at my 5e table, I click a macro button that executes one of these commands.
/em holds a rod aloft, summoning hellish fortitude! (Using his Rod of the Pact Keeper)
/em grasps a shard amulet around his neck, closes his eyes, and reaches across into the hellscape it came from. (Using his Dark Shard Amulet)
/em gains terrible fortitude following the slaying of an enemy. (Dark One's Blessing Class Ability)
/em produces a shadowy tome, bound in the hide of an otherworldly beast, flames leaping up from the script inside. (Book of Shadows Class Ability)
/em reaches back into the void, altering his fate. (Dark One's Own Luck Class Ability) /roll 1D10 [Add To Current Saving Throw]
This accomplishes three things.
It lets the game master know you're using a class ability without breaking the flow by babbling about game mechanics.
It marks the use of that class ability in the chat log for tracking purposes.
It enhances the game for other players, giving them a more vivid picture of what your character is doing.
Resources
As of writing this, Roll20 has a ton of things in the marketplace for free, tokens, maps, and modules. It is part of the response to people being stuck at home. I've included links to some notable items, but definitely cruise through all the things.

Are E-Sports Truly Athletics?
Extremely competitive pc games has been around a long period of time on the Personal Computer in addition to professional Starcraft organizations or maybe events for activities like Quake as well as Counter-Strike. The Xbox 360 has in fact made competitive video gaming significantly also a lot more famous in the last couple of years in addition to the pro-gaming console video game Major League Gaming, and even MLG for quick, in addition to has actually started to be actually classified as a sport through numerous players. Also sports information coverage, including ESPN, have actually solved in to this brand-new fad gotten in touch with E-Sports (digital sporting activities) in addition to currently takes care of MLG computer game on their web website in addition to also sometimes discusses it on Sportscenter. However is this focus confirmed? Are actually E-Sports most definitely sporting activities? The action is no and also listed below are actually reasons that this is in fact hence. Cs:Go
Lack of extensive inherent skill-set void I thought I would undoubtedly start alongside this description in purchase that any sort of sort of gamers that assume this is the sole explanation for this short write-up might be actually resolved straight off. I am actually definitely not mentioning that I may exceed a Halo 3 gamer like Tsquared. He is far much better than me. A lack of natural skill gap means that, along with devotion, practically any sort of type of player can simply end up being a pro at the activity they desire to contend in. This is actually undoubtedly not deal with for everybody as effectively as under is actually an instance. When I used to play SOCOM II, a pal of mine had over 2,000 hrs logged onto the activity online. I possessed considerably less than fifty hrs, however I was really significantly as well as also away a much better player than him. I suppose that even with only the amount of he played, I would certainly have regularly been actually much better. Having said that, on the numerous other palm, there are actually numerous gamers including on my own that are actually simply generally efficient video tasks. I possess a 2.5 K/D proportion on Halo 3, however I seldom participate in the computer game and also execute undoubtedly not take it quite seriously. I don't likewise like it. I have a feeling, however, that if I joined 8 humans resources a time or even more with the intent to take it astonishingly absolutely, I might most very likely total at the MLG quantity. I have an experiencing a mass of the gamers on Halo 3 that are committed to it, can perhaps complete at the MLG quantity Esports Events.
This is certainly not therefore along with sporting activities like hockey, baseball, baseball, also golf or perhaps tennis. I made use of to participate in hockey as a kid but even with just how much I joined, there is a 99.999% possibilities I will never ever develop it straight in to the NHL. I believe the particular very same might be actually stated for plenties of 1000, perhaps additionally numerous professional athletes in primary featuring tasks. Yet undoubtedly not pc video gaming. You have an excellent opportunity of having the capability to complete in the field of pc gaming merely by direction and also maintaining committed to it.
Possibly I may never ever before defeat TSquared however considering that gaming performs not include physicality, the distinction between us would certainly be actually just dedication. He is actually a lot a great deal extra specialized than I am, along with has in fact been for an extensive possibility. The expert gaming plays online video recording activities as his life. I selected a various development pathway. Much like I definitely would not be actually as outstanding a forensic private detective as an individual that has twenty years experience, I certainly will certainly not be really as excellent a gamer as TSquared if I contended versus him currently.
There is no looking incorporate In the bulk of major featuring tasks games like the NBA, NHL, NFL, as well as additionally MLB, there are actually light groups or educational institution amount play. This is actually only how players develop it around the majors, they take part in with university and also after that receive produced to a group or even play in the smalls, confirm on their own, as properly as are actually gotten in touch with. In E-Sports, there's no smalls. You do not have to verify on your own to compete, you merely spend to participate in an activity. I can not notify you the bunch of possibilities I have actually viewed a sporting activities game on TELEVISION to listen to a commentator insurance claim a single thing along cost-free throw pipes of 'You're in the Majors, you must possess the capability to create that play' or maybe something identical. There is actually no stature being an MLG gamer, it is actually pointless. Any individual can simply turn into one at anytime. Today, you could acquire remarkably overtaken if you're no good, however it's considering that you're completing at a level you must certainly not be actually. There is actually a description when big circle players in MLB are in fact supplied up to the smalls on a rehab task or something that they dominate or even that a gamer that might control at triple An or maybe the AHL for hockey might take in the NHL or also MLB, it's a totally various level of play Esports Events.
E-Sports perform not possess amounts of play similar to this (certain there's the CAL as well as additionally CPL but it doesn't run in a similar way). Either you are in fact contending and even you're certainly not. I believe to be actually examined a showing off activity, MLG requires to fix this by featuring a minors where players are grown stemming from to finishing in the majors. This are going to be actually the only means to get in right into the majors is actually to come to be invited, definitely not simply enroll as well as also spending out an expense.
A lack of unity or even institution There are in fact a great bargain of pc gaming leagues offered. There is actually the MLG, CAL, CPL, GGL, Gamebattles (as a matter of fact a branch of MLG), Starleagues, and additionally many others, some extra legitimate or popular than others. Sure there are various sporting activities activities, however I don't assume any individual is actually moving to point out that in America there is in fact a beach ball association much more reputable and even widely known than the NFL or perhaps a hockey league a lot more valid as properly as popular than the NHL. Why doesn't pc games have one genuine video game? Why is it as a result shaggy? If it was in fact an appropriate sporting task, it must have an uniformity of association. Instead, video games are actually merely individually had and also operated which sets off lots of various ones. Are in fact players in MLG a lot far better than a gamer in CPL? Who understands, they are actually different organizations alongside several tasks. I might along with assurance case gamers in the NHL are really much better than gamers in a European League.
This takes me to one additional aspect, the company of E-Sports is nothing at all like a sporting activity. There is actually no normal period, there are actually merely activities and additionally ladders. Even the organizations that behave to possess seasons are just managing step ladders for a certain time-frame and phone it a time. Ladders do not run like time frames due to the fact that you might sign up with or leave behind an action ladder at any option. If you go 0-5 on Gamebattles, erase your workers in addition to remake it and likewise you erase your poor begin. Groups don't possess the identical variety of online video activities took part in. You can challenge numerous other personnels at your desire so you certainly never ever need to get involved in a team that you comprehend could possibly pound you unless you reach out to the Playoffs. Genuine sporting activities may not resemble this. There may not be merely a handful of tournament-style events throughout the period Esports Events.
Developing it so much more sports-like Generally, E-Sports organizations seem to be to become making use of to help make computer gaming seem to be a sport without in reality generating it straight in to one. Like the enhancement of coaches in MLG tasks like Gears of War and Halo. That seems to become like a fully ridiculous addition to certified pc gaming as well as additionally one that doesn't likewise generate it a great deal even more like a sporting activity. Why carries out a player demand a coach?
To help make games in to a sporting activity, they must make business adjustments. Let's continue to use MLG as an instance. A Halo 3 group in MLG need to have to need to be in fact funded by a company or even person. A supporter performs not just spend for adventures to Meadowlands as well as use you fantastic computer video gaming rigs. That individual demands to possess the crew as well as they develop the roster customizations. If Ogre 1 along with Ogre 2 carry out certainly not similar to Walshy anymore, likewise negative. They carry out certainly not possess a say, the enroller carries out. Teams shouldn't be simply a group of friends that met one-time as well as have actually participated in entirely in the past because. They ought to be actually audio researches that are actually heading to exist years coming from right now, in addition to our without it's existing gamer schedule.
They need to execute a routine time. Instead of going to a handful of competitors contests or maybe accomplishing in some world wide web measure ladder, the groups linked with the time period are established at the beginning of the moment. Bid farewell to can quickly staffs participate in or also leave when the moment is underway. For this reason, routines are actually gotten ready for each team. If you are really prepared to participate in a group, you explore that area as properly as play them. Correct showing off activities groups as well as also players journey a property. It appears players rest in the house training for the observing occasion. You train in the course of the off-season in a featuring task, and likewise play in the training course of the period. Why will definitely practical play be protected online when you have device worries, potential dishonesty, as properly as lag? It does not make good sense. As a result there's no main reason they must certainly not be in fact travelling around the country to play their observing set up rival.
Each workers will definitely have the same ton of video games took part in. After the time frame mores than, playoffs would be actually seeded and played in the tournament-style tasks like Meadowlands. That must be actually merely how playoffs are really performed. Instantly it appears they possess no importance whatsoever in addition to getting you cash and offering you factors Esports Events.
There should additionally be actually a hunting combination. You can certainly not merely up and also join an MLG competitions one day. You are going to certainly must engage in a various association as well as also contend there certainly till you are welcomed with a workers operator to authorize up with an MLG team. That would absolutely provide authenticity to the video game along with also possibly clear away a number of desire to-be's along with posers given that they may not be heading to prefer to contend and likewise travel a lot.
eSports: What Exactly Is It?
Typically, the a large number of computer game that are actually connected with these competitors feature a multiplier factor as the entire aspect of eSports is in fact to communicate with other gamers. There are numerous choices right now given that gamers can conveniently play in a bunch of several contests and also competitions. The technique is actually to take part in the computer game type that you enjoy the majority of or are in fact well at.
Almost all activity designs are really delighted in eSports and also our provider positioned that one of the best noticeable types were actually 1st individual shooting (FPS), sport and MMORPGs. Our pros foresee far additional to be in fact included to this list later on.
Currently, eSports are really generally eaten and also cherished through males with 85% of guys forming involvement of activities. Industry leaders are proactively creating an effort to ensure girls involvement as well as our business presume our crew are actually going to observe some advancement on this as our crew innovation into 2017. On top of that, the eSports market generated ₤ 258 thousand in 2015 and also our provider anticipate this to become actually around ₤ 391 for 2016 which is actually rather crazy!
Where Can I View eSports? It all audios instead inducing, carries out certainly not it? The market is actually anticipated to proceed its personal significant development in 2017 as well as also involvement goes to a long lasting higher since of the media platforms standing by. You can browse through eSports on many various devices and world wide web sites. Twitch as well as YouTube are actually the really most noticeable ones along with ESPN and also Yahoo additionally possessing their quite own committed eSports regions. Add-on web websites that you may certainly not have in fact recognized are consistent to Twitch and also supply some terrific web material. These are really Azubu and also MLG thereby examine each one of all of them out for some excellent quality eSports flows.
Such is in fact the development of eSports that conventional sporting activities world wide web websites (our specialists use ESPN over as an occasion) are actually starting to suit their information to eSports fans. This is in fact rather fantastic in addition to truly pressures to our provider simply how absolutely showing off tasks deejay are really taking the eSports business.
The Success of LoL
So where carried out LoL develop coming from?! Its hit the eSports earth like a tsunami on Indonesia. I directly have actually played it on and also off considered that beta in addition to have actually viewed it bloom in to this wonderful completely grown acceptable moba. It has in fact been no easy roadway for Riot. There has been actually consequently several dangers came to that Riot have actually seemed to surely not just jump over, however capitalise on as well as expand. Exactly how performed they execute it? Whats caused LoL's development?
The incredibly early challenge for Riot was in fact verse HoN. This competitors I think has actually stressed just specifically just how successful the absolutely free to participate in idea might be actually. Yet totally cost-free to play is actually certainly not a new tip along with its vital to keep in thoughts exactly how correctly Riot well balanced it along with spent details. The workable component as well as additionally paid internet content is in fact therefore thoroughly tuned that it dangles sufficient over easygoing players to maintain every one of all of them going as effectively as yearning for more while dedicated gamers usually spend out via the nostrils to get whatever they assume they need to have to play their ultimate.
The various other aspect of the HoN competition is actually that Riot marketed their game primarily to come to be as taking of all type of gamers as achievable, especially the lay noob. You may find the suggestion in charge of HoN was actually to possess an excessive competitive importance, possibly in the ilk of exactly how sc2 was in fact introduced. It furthermore consequently tempted a lot of dota gamers.
Meanwhile Riot was actually noob accepting, place based and also possessed their 'summoners code.' The the real life effects of the, imo, is actually fairly unsubstantial. People still simulate penis in addition to the neighborhoods state of minds etc are actually rather similar. However individuals get it, they feel that their activity possesses a various standpoint despite having whether they execute what they show. Its own comparable to hipster national politics that state "spare the earth male" while recommending republican.
Difficulty decided to OWN their competitors. Perhaps the premier LoL event is what LoL on its own owns/promotes/runs ingame. Right now this is actually maybe one thing surely never ever noted merely before in every other computer game. Several video game designers to time launch a task afterwards permitted the location maintained it. Blizzard are actually among minority developers in past times that ever support a video game after release.
Luck is really an essential aspect too provided right here, in a wide array of locations. The extremely first is really streaming went massive around this moment. sc2 checked out as well as also got qualities damaging on justin.tv > dork along with own3d. LoL quickly took this up along with Riot maintained it. Conditions were really most effectively for Riot to capitalise on reaching their planned audience in an entire brand-new approach.
Another variable is actually specifically how fracking aweasomley Riot obtained setting up task caster capability. Was this an internal decision? Because it has in fact spent handsomely for each of all of them. LoL by itself is actually a technical/descriptive/ backwards as well as forward tires wet goal. To place merely, its personal an artists gold mine. Its own like the cricket of eSports.
The 2nd portion of best of luck has actually been in fact South Korea and also the change originating from sc1 to sc2. It could not have really been really timed much better for Riot and I will certainly be spellbinded to comprehend also much more relating to merely exactly how a whole lot Riot created an initiative to ensure LoL in Asia. sc2 surfaced and the entire of South Korea were adhered within this starcraft hangover rut, it seemed like a large economical environment folding significant. sc2 simply will certainly not take out and also Koreans went finding a brand new activity. That new computer game was really LoL.
Therefore straight listed here our staff are really, LoL and also confusion are in fact at the leading advantage of competitive video games, on the precipice of an all brand-new time. They smashed HoN, have really harmed out of the successful video game region and also are really today in to the eSports changing zone. Just one problem rises prior to each one of them and also its very own dota2.
I am actually enticed and likewise delighted to notice precisely just how they handle this problem. The online video activity engine is really the following combat zone I believe. At this second LoL has an outstanding harmony in between being exceptionally playable on all computers, however demanding sufficient to create individuals buy far better components to manage it. So it tempts the correct volume of promoters to activities.

Q&A Confessions // Conor Maynard
Word Count: 1808
Summary- You and your best friends film a Q&A, and it doesn’t exactly go as originally planned.
Warnings; N/A
A/n; School is starting soon, ugh! I’m trying to finish all these imagines by Tuesday, because once school starts it’s going to be hard to write. I’ll do my best to keep uploading, though. Feel free to keep sending requests as well, they just won’t be posted as frequently.
Requested; Yes.
req; Sorry I accidentally sent it before finishing it 😂 Can you write an imagine where the fans ship the character and Connor, and they secretly like each other but Connor thinks she has a crush on Joe because they're inseparable, so he gets surprised and becomes speechless when she turns to him and asks him "When are you going to ask me out?" in a Q&A video they film with the squad after reading a fan's question about that.
-
You laughed as Joe reminisced with you a childhood memory of the two of you back in primary school, and entered his flat, where the boys were already situated. You’d planned a night in with all the boys, but Caspar, being the klutz he was, managed to drop the case of beers you’d bought for the boys and smashed all the bottles. To say everyone was mad at Caspar was an understatement, You and Joe, being the ‘heroes’ of the group, had volunteered to run out to get last minute replacements, and you’d just returned.
You and Joe had known each other since birth, your mother being old friends with his. You were quite close with Zoe as well, the three of you considered yourselves as siblings, even if you were in no form related to the Suggs, you may as well have been, because you and Joe were basically twins in everything you did. From starting school together, to starting your YouTube channels together, and everything in between. You had common interests, talents, and overall were the same people, but opposite gender.
The fans knew this, and despite shipping you and Joe for some time, and being shut down by the two of you saying how you considered each other siblings in a Q&A, had finally moved on. Joe was returned to be considered for his previous ships, Jaspar and Joeck, while you hadn’t been shipped with anyone for awhile. Until recently, that was. Conor had asked you to sing a song with him for his channel, and to say the fans enjoyed it was an understatement. The new ‘buttercream’ ship was created, Y/N & Conor. Even the other boys shipped the two of you, and you didn’t mind at all.
You liked Conor, you really did. His voice was incredible, his sense of humor endless, his protective nature with Jack and Anna was heartwarming, not to mention he was really damn hot. The problem was, he seemed very uninterested or unwilling to be in a relationship. More often than not, you’d find yourself and him shooting flirty comments back and forth, but it never became much more than that. It was unfortunate, but it was life.
“Alrighty boys, now that we’ve got some refreshments, we have a video to film!” You announced, holding up your beer. Cheers were passed around, and the group situated around the couch. Conor, Joe, You, Jack, and Josh were sitting on the couch, while Mikey, Oli, and Caspar were sat in the front of the couch, on pillows, in between the gaps between your legs. Byron didn’t want to be in the video, but he said he would pop in occasionally. He started the camera for you, and with a wave, left the room. You all bid him goodbye, and you smiled as you were surrounded with your best friends, doing what you all loved to do.
“Alright, everyone! Welcome back to my channel!” You started, smiling brightly and waving, doing your typical intro. “Today I’m joined with a few losers, you might know them.” A bunch of “heys!” followed, and you smirked. “Just kidding. You may know these boys; Conor, Josh, Joe, Jack, Mikey, Oli, and Caspar!” You said, pointing to each one as you introduced them. “Byron couldn’t make it today, but he’s here somewhere. Anyways!” You said, clapping your hands together, making Joe and Jack, who were both next to you, jump. “Jeez, Y/N!” Joe said, putting a hand over his heart dramatically.
“Anyways!” You repeated, ignoring them. “We’ve all tweeted, snapchatted, and posted on our Instagrams, telling you guys to ask us questions using the hashtag askthebuttercreams, and today we’re going to be doing a big Q&A!” You said, proudly. “Let’s get right into the video, because this one is probably going to be very long because there are so many of us, but I’ll probably spend at least 3 hours editing so it’s a reasonable video.” You did a quick transition, and began the questions.
So far it had been going smooth, you all took turns asking and answering, you only being asked little questions like how you met, and little questions for certain buttercreams. Nothing terrible. “Alright, I’ve got the next one!” Jack announced, smirking. He scrolled through his twitter and picked a random tweet. You looked at him with raised eyebrows, waiting. “Lovingthebuttercreams96 asked, Why haven’t Joe and Y/N began dating yet? Come on, their chemistry is undeniable!” He read, frowning. You sighed, Jack said “Sorry, should’ve read it first.” “It’s fine, we should’ve just assumed it would be here. I’ll just edit this in between stuff out.” You said, repositioning yourself to prepare to answer. You failed to notice Conor’s immediate frown and discomfort, as he sent a glare Jack’s way, but recomposed himself when you began to answer.
“Okay guys, We’ve said this a bunch of times. We love you all, but please, Joe and I will never be in a relationship. I do not fancy him in any way shape or form, nor does he for me. We’ve discussed this personally, and we are basically siblings. I’ve grown up with both the Suggs, and they’re my second family. I could never see myself in a relationship romantically with Joe.” You said, side-hugging Joe and leaning your head on his shoulder. “It’s true, Y/N and I are basically the same person, everyone, including ourselves, think we’re twins. We may come from different families, but the way we grew up, we may as well have been twins. We appreciate your support, but it’s not happening.” Joe added, wrapping an arm around your shoulder.
While this was being explained, Conor instantly felt guilty. He’d always had a massive crush on you; he could easily say he’d never felt anything for anyone like the way he felt when he laid eyes on you. Every time felt like the first. He got butterflies just watching you do simple things like vlogging or talking to him. He always thought he never had a chance, though, because of the undeniable chemistry with Joe. He’d known you said multiple times how it wouldn’t happen, but he couldn’t help but believe you fancied Joe. Now, he just felt stupid.
“Okay, I guess it’s my turn, and we’ll end the video after because this is already going to take me hours to edit.” You said, and the boys nodded in agreement. “Let’s see..” you muttered, scrolling and tapping on a random tweet. You smirked when you read the name of the twitter account, and locked eyes with Conor, a mischievous grin on your face. Jack and Joe both, in sync muttered a quick “ooooh.” “Oh god.” Conor said, pulling a terrified face and showing the camera. He sat up straight, with perfect posture. “I’m ready for my closeup!” He said, in one of his weird voices.
You laughed, and shook your head. “Alright, Conor. This question is from ccoonoorrmaynard. Wow thats some good spelling. Anyways, they ask, “Why haven’t you asked out Y/N yet?”” You froze, your cheeks flaring, you were not expecting that. Clearly, none of the other boys were expecting it either. Jack’s jaw almost hit the floor, Mikey was sweating (but then again, he always was), Josh looked like he had to pick a side, Caspar looked oblivious (as per usual), Oli had wide eyes, Joe looked at you worried as he knew about your crush on Conor, and Conor, you didn’t know how to describe him. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
You were bright red, and you wanted to cry. Obviously Conor didn’t like you; he’d never shown any interest, and you’d just humiliated yourself. “Nevermind.” You muttered, standing up to leave. “I’ll film an outro later.” You said, tears blurring your eyes as you ran out of the room. “Good going, Conor.” Joe said, standing up angrily. “What?” Conor squeaked, shaking his head. He’d zoned out, and now you were gone. “Conor, what the hell? That was your chance!” Jack said, stunned at his brother. “She doesn’t like me back, she was just reading a question.” He said, defeated. “You’re a bloody idiot, you know that? She’s liked you since you met!” Joe exclaimed, slapping a hand over his mouth after. He knew you were going to kill him when you found out he’d told. “Really?” Conor asked, surprised.
“GO!” All the boys yelled in sync, pointing to the balcony where you were crying. He sighed, and did as instructed. “Y/N?” He asked, warily stepping out. “Go away.” You said, but your voice cracked, and Conor instantly knew you were crying. He ran over, and spun you around so you were facing him. His heart broke at the tears running down your cheeks. “It’s nothing.” You muttered, mortified. Conor frowned at the heartbroken look on your face. “You know, I haven’t got the chance to answer that question, yet.” He said, unsure of himself. You looked at him, confused. “What?”
“I haven’t asked you out yet because I’ve been nervous.” He blurted, mentally cursing himself. He probably sounded like an idiot. “You? Nervous? You perform in front of hundreds and thousands of fans while you sing, you post videos online and you’re scared to ask me out?” You asked, ludicrously. “Yeah?” He said, suddenly very confused at your reaction. “Conor, I’ve liked you forever, and we’ve been flirting since day 1. How could I reject you?” You said, amused at how oblivious this boy was.
“You weren’t THAT obvious..” Conor defended, but as he looked back on his conversations with you, he realized it was quite obvious. “Oh.” He said, as he realized how stupid he must’ve looked. “Well, um, Y/N, this wasn’t quite how I was planning to ask, but..” He started, and you shook your head with a smile. You grabbed the collar of his shirt, pulling him down into a sudden kiss. He was surprised, but wrapped his arms around you and pulled you closer, kissing you back passionately. You pulled away, leaning your forehead against his. “Yes, I’ll go on a date with you.”
“Yes mate!” “Go Conor!” “How do we always manage to save his sorry ass?” You laughed at the boys, especially Jack’s last comment. “Now that that’s settled…” Joe said, winking at you. “C’mon boys, we have a video to finish, and I have a feeling it’s a Nando’s and football night?” You suggested, earning more cheers. As you all re-situated yourselves, Jack and Conor switched positions on the couch and Conor had an arm around your waist, while Joe had one around your arm. You finished the video, and spent the night leaning against Conor’s chest, watching football with Nando’s, with your favorite boys in the world, and you wouldn’t change any of it for anything.

The welcoming community of WordPress
Taco Verdonschot
Taco Verdonschot is support & community manager at Yoast. He’s leading both our Support team and our Community team. You can regularly find him at WordCamps and meetups. Taco is passionate about WordPress, translating, hanging out with friends and making new ones, support, improving his leadership skills, helping others achieve personal growth, and many other things.
“I came for the software and stayed for the community.” In this episode of our series Why we love WordPress, I’ll show you what’s behind the software we love. Software isn’t writing itself (yet), and behind WordPress is a great number of volunteer teams working on the software and everything around it. These people are the driving force behind WordPress. Together they form a big (online) family, one that I hold very dear. And today, I want you to meet my family!
WordPress is more than software
Usually, when we speak about WordPress, we’re referring to the software. We’re referring to the code that you can install and use to build your website on. This nifty piece of software is also called ‘WordPress Core’ because it’s at the core of everything we do. Core is built by hundreds of developers. But the WordPress project isn’t limited to the Core. It isn’t limited to the code. It’s a lot bigger than that!
When you went to download WordPress over at wordpress.org, you visited the main platform for WordPress. It’s built and maintained by people on the Meta team. Or, maybe you’re Dutch and went to nl.wordpress.org, which is the same platform but translated by people on the Polyglots team.
Then, after downloading and installing WordPress you probably decided that you want a custom theme for your brand new website. So, you go over to the themes section on wp.org and pick one of the free themes listed. All of these themes are built by people and companies who offer them for free, and all are reviewed by the people on the Theme Review Team before they’re offered to you. The same goes for all of the 56,000+ plugins listed. They are all reviewed by volunteers on the plugins team.
Are you getting an idea of the number of volunteers involved with WordPress? Great! Now consider I’ve only mentioned a few of the 18 (!!) teams working on the WordPress project. As you can see, people are at the heart of the WordPress project. People, volunteers, who are willing to put in all this effort to help themselves and each other. For so many people to work together on one project successfully, you need a strong sense of community. WordPress has exactly that.
Who are these people?
In WordPress, you’ll find people from all walks of life, all trades and all levels of expertise. Each and every one of them has their own reason to be involved with the project. Maybe it’s to learn from experts in their field, maybe they love open source, want to improve the web for millions of people worldwide, or to give back to the project that’s giving them a lot. Everyone has their own story to tell, and I can only encourage you to listen to those stories.
What I found they all have in common is a great passion for their area of expertise in the WordPress project. And it’s the positive energy they bring to the project that makes WordPress what it is today. Most contributors to WordPress started out as users of the software, who found a problem and started fixing it. It’s that collective mindset of wanting to make WordPress better for everyone that defines both the people and the project.
Some of them found their job through contributing to WordPress. Others are now employed just to work on the project. Some are building websites and submitting patches to resolve the problems they’re running into. Others have their day jobs in completely different fields but contribute their spare time for the fun of contributing.
Regardless of their reasons, WordPress is thriving because of the passion of its contributors, the WordPress community.
Joining the WordPress community
I know. Reading about the energy the community gives makes you want to join it. And you know what the best part is? You’re most welcome! The WordPress community is a friendly, inclusive, and welcoming bunch that would be happy to have you.
Back in 2013 when I was completely new to WordPress, one of the most experienced contributors to WordPress told me this; “All you have to do to be part of the community is show up. And here you are. Welcome!”.
If you want to be part of this group of amazing people too, all you have to do is find something you’re passionate about, something that’s currently broken you want to fix, or something that you see can be improved in WordPress. Listen to the conversations in teams, especially when you don’t know what to work on yet. Show up, and start doing the work. Talk to the people on the team about your ideas and you’ll find they’ll be the first to welcome you in.
Meeting the community
Much of what’s happening in WordPress is happening online. So you can meet the WordPress community from basically anywhere with an internet connection.
Make WordPress and Slack
Make WordPress is the central location for all the teams in the WordPress community. Each team has its own blog and its own handbook. The handbooks are the ‘playbooks’ for each team. They describe what the team does, how it’s done, and how to get started as a new contributor to the team. So it’s a great place to learn about all the teams.
Day-to-day communication within and between teams happens in Slack. Slack is chat software, based on IRC – for those of you old enough to remember it, like me. Everyone who has a wordpress.org account can join the WordPress Slack. Almost 35.000 WordPressers now have an account on the WordPress Slack. This makes it a great place to meet, have discussions, and share information for everyone involved with WordPress.
Social media
Meeting people who are working with WordPress -obviously- isn’t limited to the official channels. You can find WordPress user groups on Facebook and LinkedIn, check out tutorials on YouTube, and follow WordPressers on Instagram and Twitter. Who knows, you might even find TikTok videos on WordPress. All of these networks allow you to interact with the people behind WordPress.
Is everything happening online then?
Well, the timing for that question is interesting, given the current state of the world with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, under normal circumstances, there are also great opportunities to meet in person. These -mostly local- events come in two flavors; Meetups and WordCamps.
Meetups
WordPress meetups are highly local events where WordPress enthusiasts, users, students, developers, configurations, and everyone who has ever touched or is planning to touch, WordPress can go. They’re mostly free events that are organized in the evening once a month, or every couple of months to talk about WordPress and the things you can do with it. You can find all the official WordPress Meetups on meetup.com. If there’s one near you, I can highly recommend you to go check it out!
WordCamps
The bigger version of a meetup is a WordCamp. They’re usually one or two days long conferences featuring presentations about a wide variety of WordPress-related topics. The conference tickets are kept low-cost with the help of amazing sponsors. Again, if you really want to get involved, this is the place to be! And I’m not just saying that for the (after)parties
You can check out all the upcoming WordCamps on wordcamp.org/schedule. And if you want to know where to go to meet Team Yoast, you can check out our calendar!
The impact of COVID-19 on offline events
Since the COVID-19 virus pandemic started, in-person events worldwide have been canceled. But when you have a community filled with positive energy, anything can happen. Anything will happen. And so, the events that used to be offline, are now moving online through Zoom, YouTube Live, and other video and streaming services.
One of the known effects of the pandemic on people, especially on those who are self-employed, is loneliness. It’s amazing to see how the WordPress community is handling that. I often see people check in on each other, just have a quick chat and keep others involved. It’s absolutely heartwarming. It’s also people from the WordPress community who started Big Orange Heart, a charity focusing on mental health support for remote workers. And while this initiative started well before COVID-19, it’s extra important in today’s world.
Why we love the WordPress community
The WordPress community is a global group of thousands of enthusiasts who share a passion for the WordPress project. Because WordPress is open source, it attracts friendly, open and welcoming people. WordPress is thriving because of the energy these people bring, and that’s why we are actively involved in, and absolutely love the WordPress community!

Raised £600k with less than 5 customers.Newspaper launch with thousands of sign-ups and no conversions.Nanny sharing service in London.Hiring a nanny in London is notoriously expensive and parents normally have to handle maternity, sick pay and reporting tax to HMRC. Koru Kids aim to take the hassle out of childcare. They hire and train nannies, allocate them to families for just the hours they need and take care of the paperwork. Rachel Carrell explained to me the lessons she learned working in a consultancy and launching her initial product and getting no conversions - NathanWhat does Koru Kids actually offer? We’re building the world's best childcare service. As parents will already know, childcare is horrendous. It’s exhausting, very patchy quality, very hard to afford and usually financially crippling. There’s lots of problems to solve and ultimately we will solve all of them but what we’re focusing on right now is after-school care in London. We recruit nannies to be after-school nannies - a very rare thing in london. We then train them up ourselves and match them with families; then manage the paperwork, payroll and pension for the family. We provide the nannies with ongoing training and support as well.Your background is in consultancy - how did that impact your decision to start your own company? My career at McKinsey was super important to me wanting to start something. I’ve always wanted to found my own business. I don't come from an entrepreneurial family, both my parents were teachers and I didn't really know business people growing up. It’s just something I've always wanted to do.I waited until relatively late in my life as I was 34 when I founded Koru Kids but I learned a lot in the earlier years.I worked at McKinsey 6 years - a really long time and I learned so much about how to think about different kinds of strategy and business and how to manage people and projects. That gave me loads more confidence to start my own thing.I really admire people who start earlier in life, in their early 20’s but I just didn’t feel ready at that age.I’ve seen that a lot of successful founders start their companies in their mid 30’s. Did being 34 mean you had more savings for funding? It definitely gave me savings but I tried to de-risk from the start.I already had a career, so I knew if the business failed, I had a job I could go back to. I also had savings and had saved pretty hard so I knew I could live off that for a while. The other thing is that I was married and my husband had an income as well.I wouldn't have wanted to start a business before I had my relationship sorted out and before I felt as though I had a career. So I had de-risked it in a bunch of different ways.Rachel Carrell picNo one ever talks about your relationship but it’s such an important part of it. You make these decisions that will affect the rest of your life. How financially secure does your partner want to be? People make these decisions on the basis of these things but no one ever talks about it.How did you prove the idea before you left?I was quite disciplined about this.I did a job briefly which I wasn't really that into and that helped a lot actually. Leaving a career and a job I loved and starting something would have been another jump. But as it happened, I was pretty much going to leave anyway.I thought that if I don't do it now, when all the stars are aligned and there's literally no reason for me not to do it, I may as well stop saying I’m ever going to do it because I don’t mean it.Another way I de-risked it was that I set myself a really clear goal. I read “The Lean Startup” and it has lots of ideas on testing ideas without spending time and money on them. One of the very classic things you can do is set up a website which is just a front door - just a proposition and see if people sign up to it. So I used Squarespace and I took a couple of days to make a website and then I tested it by promoting for free on facebook groups. I set myself a target of 20 signups and said if I achieve those 20 signups I'm going to quit my job.I achieved 20 sign-ups and so I quit my job.How is the cost reduced compared to other services?A lot of parents find it incredibly hard to find after-school nannies. It's a service where there isn't enough supply. So a lot of families have to employ a nanny full-time even though they only need the part-time - which feels ridiculous, but for many families it's the only way of solving the problem. Our hourly rate may be fairly similar and in fact slightly cheaper than a full-time professional nanny but the real saving is that you only use them for the hours that you actually need.Do you employ the nannies or are they freelance contractors who work with you? They’re actually neither of those things, they’re employed by the parents. There's no other legal way of doing it. Their employment causes a big burden for parents because when you have all these employment obligations like maternity, sick pay and reporting tax to HMRC.We do all of that for the parents and take away the burden.Do the nannies find other jobs during the day or are just work part time?Well, that's the thing. We have to find people who will specifically do after-school only and there are two types of people we typically find to do so.One is older adults, usually older women. So a typical profile might be a grandma who does volunteering, has brought up her own kids and doesn't want a full time job but a part time job is perfect. The other big group for us is university students. So again these are people who don't want a full time job. They just want a few hours a day, it's much more fun than a pub job or a shoe shop. How many customers did you have when you raised your first round?I actually went through investment surprisingly early on and got an unusual amount from unusual people early on. I founded the business and incorporated it in March 2016. I got my first paying customer in July - one customer - and I immediately started raising money.  I'm not technical myself. I had a PowerPoint presentation, I had a crappy SquareSpace website which I made myself and I had one customer that was okay with it. I got my first term sheet in August. It took a while to close and Legals took forever but I ended up receiving £600k in January. So about four months later.Wow! So you raised £600k with just one customer?I think I had three or something like that by the time the deal closed. It may have been five. It was a very very small number. How did you manage to raise so much money? It’s quite non typical to be able to raise that much at such an early stage.Yeah. I didn't realize at the time that it was, although it's not completely unheard of. You see startups coming out of places like entrepreneur first with big rounds for example - so it's not unheard of. But I think the main reason I was able to do that was because I already had a track record. It was not as a founder but I had a track record as an operator.I'd been at McKinsey for six years, I'd then gone and I'd run an online doctor service which I'd grown a lot over three years and achieved good revenue figures. In every investor discussion I had, I mentioned that within the first three minutes of meeting them. That was kind of my calling card. I ran this (doctor service) business and took it from this much revenue to this much revenue. Had I not done that and got the experience, I would have struggled to raise in the way that I did.It was entirely on track record. I was a little bit older and wasn't raising in my early 20s. I did have this other career before I became a founder and as it turned out, that helped a lot.  So now you have £600k, how do you grow the business from there? So I brought on my first employee who was someone I had worked with before. She was the top junior team member at the other company I ran and did amazingly well there. By the time I left she had become part of the senior team but still came over to join me.She and I got together in the trenches building Koru Kids. Neither of us were technical so we didn't build any tech. We were using off the shelf hacky platforms like sheets and Google maps.We then we got overwhelmed with customer service and I decided to hire someone. I wanted someone who offered more than nice emails or phone calls so looked for someone who was smart and analytical.I put up a free ad on the UCL job board and ended up hiring Kitty, who held a masters in climate science. She has a sharp and analytical mind from her science background. Two years later she developed into an awesome manager and looks after huge swathes of the business. It was really important to me that I hired people who are high potential, data savvy and very adaptable. Kitty is one example of this, but I hire in a similar way throughout the business. What happened after raising investment? So far, the way I told the story everything seems to be smooth right?I just raise the money and hire these people but you know startups are not actually that easy.I didn't actually raise money with the after school idea. We were working on a different idea for about 6-9 months while raising money. This was before our public launch as I wanted to wait until we had raised and could do a big raise announcement launch. When our funding came through we got this huge double-page spread in the Evening Standard and got thousands of sign-ups. We thought, "Oh this is great! Everything's going so well!"And then….No one converted! We had so many sign-ups, but no-one actually converted. Our conversion rates were beyond dismal. The idea we launched was a nanny share where one nanny looks after two families’ kids. I still believe this idea would absolutely work, it was just the precise way we went about it was slightly off.At this point we had to decide whether to pivot towards after school. I remember speaking to our investors saying, “we have this other idea that is showing a lot of promise but is not the original idea we raised money for. What should we do?”All of the investors said we should go after the thing that’s growing and so that’s what we did. Until that point we were doing after school as an experiment on the side.I do remember that it was a difficult decision, it’s so hard to know when to persist with something and when to give up. You hear both sides, you hear that entrepreneurs never give up and then you also hear they’re flexible and pivot. It makes it so difficult to know when to do each thing! How quickly did the new idea grow relative to the old one and how did you know it was the right idea?It just felt easier. People often say product market fit is something you just know because it feels easy. It just felt like we were being pulled rather than pushing. It was a tough decision. I remember the first thing I did was put someone on after-school full-time and said, “oh you can run the after-school service” which is hilarious now because we have so many people running it now and there’s no way that one person could do the whole thing. How are you marketing apart from in the newspapers? We had one PR launch but that was with the old product. Facebook has always been very important for us but a lot of it is word of mouth. Word of mouth scales amazingly well for what we're doing.Right from the very start we've just tried to build an incredibly high quality service. One of the things about child care is parents just talk. So if your service is good then it gets amplified. Also if anything goes wrong it gets amplified as well, so it's high stakes. But the better your product is, the more people will talk. One of the great things about childcare is that parents want to help each other and they talk about childcare all the time.Over the years have there been any horror stories with any children playing up or anything? No, luckily nothing terrible. We pay a lot of attention to this and really go above and do far more than we actually are required to do. We do vastly more than what is legally required, but I think that is critical. My background is in health care so when I was at McKinsey I did a lot of healthcare and the other business I ran for a while was also a health care business. I've worked in hospitals, so I have very much a health care orientation when I think about safety. Hospitals and healthcare organizations are always dealing with risk of terrible things. It really is a matter of life and death and so a lot of the processes that I brought in are things that I learned from health care.In healthcare you have this idea of a ‘never event’, it is an event that should never happen. An example would be chopping off the wrong leg of someone or removing the wrong body part. Hospitals have all these procedures to prevent ‘never events’ like checklists and we've imported a lot of that stuff. Are you looking to expand nationally or internationally?Yeah. I get parents contacting me quite a lot saying, "can you open up where I live?" Or occasionally I get parents saying, "can I open Koru up where I live?" People also tell me they run their own business and they want to run my business where they live. So I feel like if we were to franchise there would be quite a lot of appetite but the absolute hardest part of my job is saying no to things.I think we're so mission driven and there are so many problems to solve it is almost physically painful turning down opportunities, but we just have to. It's so hard keeping focus and saying no to so many things but we're just going to be very focused on what we're doing and making our product as good as it possibly can be. We have a lot of products that we still need to build. What apps help you run the business day-to-day?It's probably no surprise that we use Slack a lot. We have an e-mail system I really like called Front. We were one of the early users of Front. It's grown very quickly. It was a Y Combinator startup. We use Metabase a lot, we use AirTable a lot. We're kind of nerdy, we get excited about new database software. We love AirTable. We use Zapier, we use Twilio. We don’t use Squarespace any more, though. Luckily now we have people whose website skills are much better than mine.If you enjoyed this post, the original is here.

Legit Work-at-Home Jobs – No Fees
With advances in technology and with corporate attitudes towards telecommuting turning around, there are more remote positions than ever before! In fact, according to FlexJob’s annual analysis of the top companies that hire remote workers, there was a 36% increase in the number of remote jobs from 2014 to 2015.
But just because telecommuting jobs are on the rise, doesn’t mean you can slack off from doing your due diligence. The FTC estimates that ONLY one in every 55 work-at-home opportunities is legit.
There are many warning flags that an opportunity is a scam. Things like lack of contact information, vague job descriptions, hyped-up want ads, negative reviews, and poor ratings. But there is one warning flag that causes a lot of confusion, and that's fees associated with working from home.
You always hear people say, “You should never have to pay for a job” and in essence that's true. But there are some exceptions to that rule, which I want to discuss before I move on to the legit work-at-home jobs that don't require a fee.
With the majority of work-at-home jobs, the bare minimum you'll need to provide is a reliable computer (or laptop) and high-speed internet connection. However, depending on which job you perform you may also need a dedicated phone line, a headset, a quiet office space free of distractions, and a printer. Some legit fees you may encounter when applying for remote jobs are fees for training materials and criminal background checks (CBC).
Why do work-at-home companies charge for these sorts of fees?
It's mainly entry-level positions that require these sorts of fees, and the reason companies do this is they want to weed out candidates that aren't 100 percent committed to the role. The rationale is if you invest a small amount of money you're more likely to follow through and remain with the company for a longer period. On the flipside, most telecommuting positions for professional careers, do not require any fees for training or background checks.
One last thing you need to consider when searching for work-at-home opportunities is — is the position a job or a business endeavor? There are lots of legit business-in-a-box opportunities,home-based franchises, and direct sales companies that require startup fees. These sorts of fees are entirely legit when you're joining a business opportunity, but again, you need to make sure that you're dealing with reputable companies.
Don't want to invest any money at all? No problem.
Here are a bunch of legit work-at-home jobs (with equipment requirements) that don't require a fee to get started.
