on one hand I'm kinda like....duh what are y'all so upset about, we been knew. but on the other hand...thinking about what it would take to pick yuri on ice back up again now that it's been officially put down, kinda makes my heart hurt. I don't know if there's ever going to be a path forward for this series that had so much potential left.
Mostly, I'm annoyed with the announcement. Really vague language about unspecified circumstances. I wish they would be straight with it because there are numerous reasons that could've contributed to the decision not to move forward. The prevalence of Russian skaters, the issues with and reorganization of the studio, the amount of time that's passed and the acquisition of more relevant projects. But I guess there's less to talk about and less blowback the less you say? Or maybe just not enough people care anymore.
I don't feel like we're missing anything with what we have exactly, so I've never been that cut up about the show not continuing. but no other piece of media has ever meant as much to me as yoi does. probably a lot of that is how much space is left in the story for more. I don't know, I don't feel like I should be upset but I'm feeling upset man. Just a little bit of silly grief for my favorite media of all time being unceremoniously cancelled....
after 5 years of radio silence tho so like, what did we expect. it's been over.

ok i've seen you talk about oda nobunaga and also the westernization of japan in the Meiji period quite a bit and I'm wondering about that 260 or so years in between: what's your take on the Edo period? Deeply repressive isolationist state? Pinnacle of high culture and the golden age of nihongo? Both at the same time? Neither? Some kind of crypto-edoist stance that means you'll dodge my ask by not really answering the question?
Oh the Edo period is actually my favorite period of Japanese history. Maybe tied with Heian. It's hard to say if it was "good" or not, I mean... the end of a century of constant war was certainly a good thing. Sakoku was, I mean, in a certain sense obviously bullshit, it's bullshit to say no one can come in and no one can leave. That's not very nice. On the other hand maybe this was instrumental in Japan's ultimate rise, I don't know. Maybe keeping Christian influence and Western political meddling at bay was the right longterm play. I can't imagine that the spread of Christianity in Japan could possibly have been a good thing. So it's hard to say, hard to say what I would have done if I had been Tokugawa Ieyasu. I don't approve of the witch hunts against kakure kirishitan. They should have been allowed to chill and do their thing, man.
But of course this is not really the level on which I like to engage with history, especially history so dead as the shogunate. What's done is done, and so on. The import question is, was it Neat? And yeah it was pretty fucking neat. I'm obviously a huge ukiyo-e head which can be seen in #aestheticposting, that's all Edo shit. And I love me a good sangaku, and dope shit like that.

01. The Magician ♤
The Magician symbolizes creativity and self-confidence. You have all the tools and resources you need to help you in your journey. There's not a solution or an obstacle that you cannot counter with your bag of tricks.
I've noticed fictional depiction of tarot card tends to place the hero in the position of The Magician, dependent on their level of skills and/or experience. Shovel Knight isn't some newbie, the guy's obviously had hundreds of adventures and the necessary chops to remain as versatile as he did.
If this had been a straightforward journey starting with Reize's "Fool" card, then Shovel would be the next guy he'd meet, serving as a older, better version of what the boy can become if he learned something from him.
While most of the knights he fights stick with One Gimmick, Shovel Knight lives up to his Indie Super Mario legacy and embodies anything that he can get his grubby hands while combating his foes with his One Gimmick, and that shovel has range (it's a weapon! It's a digging tool! It's a pogo! It's a blocker!)
For a man of shovelry, it's not about the tool he uses, it's how he uses it.

Tagged by @village-skeptic to "share three random facts about yourself."
My front teeth are mostly fake! There was something up with the fluoride in the Philadelphia water when I was a baby that messed up the surfaces of my natural teeth, so five of the six top-fronts are now porcelain veneers...and the sixth is an entirely fake bridge because I'm just congenitally missing that one (ditto one sister and our maternal grandmother).
I took guitar lessons for a couple of years, mainly because my parents were like "pick an instrument but not drums" (my sisters both tried piano) but was always terrible at it and retained nothing. I cannot read music and am basically tone-deaf.
I've never been big on costumes. I love cosplay in theory, but in practice I have little interest in actually dressing up as anything with real effort—including for Purim or Halloween—and usually just fake something with whatever I already own if I absolutely must. Longtime followers may recall I've done Carmen Sandiego a whole bunch of times since acquiring a red trenchcoat about a decade ago, as you basically just need that and a hat (which I purchased concurrently for this reason) to make it work.
