Haikyuu Book Club Week 8: 326 - 330
Tumblr media
1. the significance of this game
Tumblr media
something that stood out to me was this panel. the chapter is titled "the game you can't afford to lose" and the focus is on akaashi. this doesn't seem all that logical considering that he's a second year student, so he could just try again. plus, i don't think we've ever seen him express an intense desire to win (but correct me if i'm wrong here). so, why is this game so important? because if they don't win, he won't be able to play volleyball with bokuto anymore.
but that's not the only goal akaashi has. bokuto wants to win - and akaashi is going to get him there at any cost. he is going to make sure that bokuto achieves his goal.
Tumblr media
2. akaashi
akaashi has a tendency to overthink. this can be a good thing - he is able to predict bokuto's reactions fairly well thanks to his analytical mind. however, he gets lost in his head sometimes, and that's when he can get outsmarted by an opponent.
Tumblr media
at least he's self-aware, though
Tumblr media
3. bokuto appreciation time
look at him! doing his little excited jump!
Tumblr media
bokuto x kuroo friendship
Tumblr media
bokuto x hinata friendship
Tumblr media
this panel.
Tumblr media
bonus: live kuroken reaction
Tumblr media
4. kiryu - emotional investment
wakatsu kiryu is not the person we should be rooting for. the characters we've known longer are fukurodani - they're even friends of our main characters.
and yet.
he is not simply the antagonist of this arc. instead of focusing on how our mc's can defeat kiryu and his team, we are made to feel sympathy for him. and his backstory if very similar to several other characters'! by now, we know what it feels like being defeated by people more "talented." we know what it feels like being scared to take on the responsibility of being your team's ace. all of those fears are ones our protagonists also experience.
kiryu is just like them. he is just another teenager who wants to keep playing volleyball with his friends for as long as he can.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that's both the beauty and tragedy of haikyuu. you can't pick a side. you don't want anyone to lose. there is not a single character you can look at and think, "i don't like you, i don't care about your motivation and hopes, i hope you lose."
5. this line daishou says.
Tumblr media
often, when it comes to sports the focus is on who wins and who loses. but at its core, that's not what any sport is truly about. and this is especially obvious in haikyuu. it's never (well. almost never. looking at you oikawa) about defeating another team. it's about having fun. i will never stop screaming about this
6. kenma and hinata
i love their friendship so much. i have talked about them every week and i have run out of new things to say about them. but just, look at them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. one of the most important panels this week
it's kuroo thinking this, which i think matters because it shows he cares for his friend. it also reminds us that bokuto's ability to play well depends on his mood. and the only one who can make sure that bokuto either stays positive or gets out of his "emo mode" is akaashi. which brings us back to my very first point. the key element to winning this game and making sure bokuto reaches his goal is akaashi.

🐇 For Yuuto/Yua since they were a thing
"Hmm.. Nope." Yua huffed, turning around as she hid the plushie "Aww come on, Yu. It looks like a pig anyway-" "It's a cat! And you won't be getting it anymore" Yuuto sighed, laughter dying out "It's cute. So can't I have it, princess?" He peered at her face from behind, his chest against her back "You lost plushie privilege, sir!!" She grumbled as she continued to try and move away only to have Yuuto circle her.
"Hey Yua." His voice was serious which made the girl look up. He took his chance, pecking her lips as he stole the plushie from her hands "Gah?!!" She squeaked and fumbled back "Victory!!!" Yuuto shouted, chuckling as he held the plushie up out of Yua's reach.
"Aww come on. Heh, you look like a squirrel with your cheeks all puffed up like that~" he teased only to have her glare at him "Fine fine... Hmm I'll treat you to something? How about some Justice Burger? Or Moyai Mart?" He thought which finally broke Yua, making her laugh "Eww, how about some actual food?" "Ahem, pre-packaged pickle plum onigiri is "actual food"" Yuuto puffed his chest out.
Yua giggled "How about Udagawa Parfait? Or maybe Kyoto Sweets?" She suggested "You only want Kyoto Sweets because they have their triple matcha parfait back..." Yuuto grumbled "And you'll make me have a bit" he sighed "Aww but you love me so you'll go. Because I love you a matcha ~ " Yua giggled as she started walking in the direction of the cafe "Gross, I have the world's lamest girlfriend" Yuuto over dramatically sighed but followed her, hiding his smile.
"Correction, you have the world's best girlfriend. Come on I'll text Kiryu and Mikagi so they can meet us there." Yua took out her phone, practically skipping "Great the whole Misaki family, should I text the others so they'll show up?" Yuuto picked up his pace "Geez princess, slow down! I take my eyes off you and you disappear" "Don't be so dramatic, I can't just up and disappear. You're stuck with me forever" Yua stuck her tongue out.

a4 and c9 for the ykza asks :3
Hello! Thank you~
Yakuza Questionnaire
A4: Favourite Antagonists?
Yakuza Specifically
Daisaku Kuze, Tsukasa Sagawa*, Homare Nishitani (Though how much of an antagonist he is is kinda debatable), Ryuji Goda, Yoshitaka Mine, Masato Aizawa, Jo Sawashiro, Yosuke Tendo, Reiji Ishioda.
Judgment
Kyohei Hamura, The Mole,
Lost Judgment
Jin Kuwana
* I don't need a character to be a 'good' as a person to be considered a good character. IMO, an awful character that is well written is still a good character and good to watch, and absorb and adds enrichment to the story.
C9: What was the most emotional scene in the series?
It is impossible to pick one so once again I'm going to break it up by game.
Yakuza 0
Tachibana breaking down to Kiryu about how badly he just wants to see his sister again. He's been almost completely stoic up until now and my heart shatters every time. Especially since we know he never gets the chance.
Kiryu carrying the deceased Tachibana out of the warehouse, and just looking so crushed, devastated and defeated.
Makoto coming up to Tachibana after he's passed on. The way she starts sobbing and softly cries, "It's okay, you're tired." BREAKS ME COMPLETELY.
Majima at the hospital, begging Makoto to be ok. He's so tired. He's so exhausted, he's barely holding it together, but he *has* to keep going even if at this point he's running on total autopilot.
Yakuza 1/ Kiwami
Shinji and Reina. Their deaths *hurt*. And they're almost never mentioned again after that either..only briefly in Yakuza/Kiwami 2.
Most of Kiwami's ending before the post-credits. Everything hurts. EVERYTHING.
I played Kiwami after Yakuza 0, so the steady decline of Kiryu and Nishiki's bond is..painful to watch dissolve slowly and terribly. Especially given how much they meant to each other.
Yakuza 3
Mine destroying the orphanage.
Rikiya's death. Honestly, there's a lot to Rikiya's death that hurts, but how bad Kiryu is hurting just seems to make it so much worse.
Yakuza 4
The entirety of the mess that becomes (and ends) Yasuko and Saejima's story.
Yakuza 5
Kiryu in pretty much every scene. He's depressed, lonely, coasting though life barely understanding what he's doing anymore, unable to find his footing, too old to get comfortable settling down and too worried *and badly missing* his kids. Yakuza 5 has an extremely melancholy, depressing opening too.
Shinada's entire story gets me. Everyone he trusts and knows betrays him. THE ENTIRE TOWN. Poor guy.
When he cries after Takasugi (WHO I FORGOT TO ADD AS A FAVOURITE ANTAGONIST BUT ADD HIM) tells him to come home.
Yakuza 5's ending. Haruka clinging to Kiryu in the snow before he passes out.
Yakuza 6
There's a scene near the beginning of Yakuza 6 of Haruka sitting on the beach at night at Morning Glory. Kiryu has gone back to jail, she's alone and reading articles slandering herself *which doesn't get to her* and her siblings *which absolutely does*. 16 years old, alone, and known for being 'strong' she curls into herself and sobs "Uncle Kaz, what do I do? What should I do?" Fully a scared, lonely child who desperately wants her dad (and NEEDS AND SHOULD HAVE) her dad.
All she wants in that moment is her dad there, hugging and taking care of her. And she can't even have that much.
The want to dive into the screen and hug this poor child is PALPABLE And she might have her siblings, but she needs a goddamned PARENT. Someone to hold her and tell her it's okay, they'll help her.
Instead, she packs her bags, thinking leaving is best for her siblings *just like her dad*, and leaves that same night.
To follow up this, 3 years later, Kiryu comes home, and all his kids are happy to see him. He asks after Haruka. Ayako, the only person who knew Haruka left before the other kids woke up to her gone, and had believed she'd gone to Kamurocho, breaks down in tears because she's just NOW finding out Haruka lied, and has not been seen in THREE YEARS.
Then..the ending. After the Iwami fight. Good. Grief.
Yakuza 7
Arakawa telling Ichiban he's so proud of him after the Omi fight. Gets me in the feels everytime.
Ichiban and Arakawa chatting at the waterfront. Also gets me. Everytime.
Arakawa's death. Not only a huge turning point for Ichiban but painful in so so many ways.
This list is not exhaustive but this was getting oh so very long. XD.
Thank you for asking!
Tagging @kulemii as promised.

if you're still feeling like playing the rgg game can you answer: a3, a4, a7, b4, b5, c2, c10, e2, f7?
Yeah yeah yeah! <3
A) Just Your Faves:
3.Favorite Protagonist(s) Ichiban Kasuga Ichiban is just such a breath of fresh air; he's funny, relatable, charismatic. I'm more partial to a protag that's upbeat and a little dumb as opposed to someone stoic. I'll give Majima an honorable mention as he's also a lot of fun to walk through a story with.
4. Favorite Antagonist(s) Jin Kuwana. Like many who love this character, it's tied to a personal history of being bullied. There's only so much "waiting for things to change" before you can't take it anymore. Having someone like Kuwana who has decided that kids are dying now, I'm not waiting for the law is a comfort. "Doing what is right" isn't always going to mean following the law. AND HE'S SUPER CUTE JUST LOOK AT HIM. HE'S MY BABYGIRL
7. Favorite substory(ies) I loved hunting for the squirrels in Lost Judgment, and looking for cats in Judgment. In general I love answering the call of the primal urge to hunt and gather.
B) Let's get Personal:
4. Who would you like to post more, but don't? Why don't you? Watase...because I've combed through his tag like five or six times and reblogged everything just as much...and a good bit of the tag is just me being an idiot LMAO
5. Which character do you think you would bump heads with most if you knew them in real life? Masato Arakawa & Yoshitaka Mine. The problem being we're too much alike. The three of us in a room would be an insufferable nightmare. Three introverted loners, two with a complex of being the sibling no one not even your own parents liked? We gotta open a window the edge and depression is curling the paint help.
C) Let's be Subjective
2. Which game had the worst plotline? It's a tie between Y4 & Y6. TBH I couldn't tell you one fucking thing about Y6 and I played it twice other than its shit ending...all of it is shit I hate Y6 LOL. And Y4 is just - I don't get how it's a fan favorite, Akiyama I'm certain is the only reason why anyone holds it in such regard.
10. Which game do you think should get a remake? You could remake Y6 and retcon Haruka shaking up with bighead and I'd be satisfied. You could retcon all of Y6 and I'd be over the moon. Part of that game's problem is it just felt like prestige tv. One really long showcase of star studded named like Shun Oguri, Beat Takeshi, Tatsuya Fujiwara, and Hiroyuki Miyasako. I mean I guess Y0 did that too but it did it well, this one did not.
E) This or That?
2. Bops: Haruka Sawamura, T-SET, or Dream Line? Haruka Sawamura. So Much More is THE song okay. It's bright and catchy. And of course the all star remixes are so goodddddd. It's funny her VA sings the same way for Rise Kujikawa, but I absolutely hateeee her! The character's personality definitely helps make music likeable.
F) Insert Yourself
7. Who are you fighting on top of the Millennium Tower rooftop? I'm getting at least one swing at Kiryu and I'm gonna be screaming my qualms and crying the whole time cuz I'm so mad LMAO. You could line them all up and let me get one hit in though, I'll think of a reason why later >:3
