‘Go To Sleep You Little Baby’

I’ve always wanted to record this old lullaby tune called ‘Go To Sleep You Little Baby’ that was co written by a group of American songwriters; Alan Lomax, Gillian Howard Welch, Sidney Carter & T-Bone Burnett. This lullaby was renowned for its appearance in the 2000s American film ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’, sung by 3 sirens as a way of seducing the 3 men who starred in the movie. As I was growing up both my mum and dad used to play the music from this film a lot around the house, so the soundtrack has always felt a little nostalgic and has held a certain place within my childhood memories (especially the lullaby.) For this reason I was really inspired to use this assignment as an opportunity to re-visit ‘Go To Sleep...’ and develop a soundscape-artistic vision that expanded on the underlying spooky beauty the song was trying to convey. Go To Sleep contains a series of verses all throughout with a consistent melody/pulse, however the lyrics seem to get slightly darker as the tune develops. I absolutely love the melody of this song and the way the lines are phrased across each voice; it is so relaxed and emotive, especially the fall after the lyric ‘baby’ each time. It’s a very beautiful piece and I am very excited to pursue/expand on it in my project.
