You know what I found refreshing about Anna in Last Voyage of the Demeter? (brief spoilers, btw)
Tumblr media
Her attacks from Dracula are clearly presented as a metaphor for sexual assault (actually it's not a metaphor, she was literally given to him by her village elders) and she's not blamed for it. None of that "wellll she was probably a slut because, y'know, chicks, so she deserved it" shit here.
In fact, when she is called a whore, it is said by a blatant bigoted asshole and therefore not meant to be agreed with. (edit: so i've been reminded that in context he doesn't know she's been attacked by Dracula, which is a good point to note - still, bigoted asshole behaviour)
I also loved that she said she was done with people controlling her life, and she decided to take back that control at the end. Again, it's nice to not see a "look at this poor, corrupted woman who had to get put down like a dog :(" ending.
Look, women in Dracula films have had a pretty shitty history when it comes to this, so I'm more than pleased with this. Between Evie last year (yes, I know, divisive film to say the least) and Anna (also I do still really like Rebecca from Renfield though she doesn't really fit in this category/topic), we're making progress here! Fingers crossed Mina and Lucy get similar actual-decent treatment in their next appearance!
