I really think we as a society need to stop glorifying ancient Sparta as a “badass culture”.

They tortured all of their male children. They practiced eugenics. It was a sick, toxic society that should never have existed. Their philosophy was built on extreme child abuse, violence, and ableism.

There shouldn’t be cool action movies made about it. It shouldn’t be a mascot for sports teams. There shouldn’t be lists of “top 10 badass Spartan soldier facts” on social media. LGBT people should not be viewing it as a positive society just because being gay wasn’t considered abnormal. Ancient Sparta was evil. Not one of those innocent little boys who were molded into murderers got to have a happy, healthy childhood. They were ripped away from their families and abused every single day before they even had a birthday with two numbers.

Ancient Sparta was NEVER “badass”. It was a prime example of how bad a society can get if it glorifies violence and doesn’t respect it’s children.

We should be learning from Sparta’s mistakes, not glorifying them.

If we’re gonna be making movies and shit about Ancient Sparta, don’t fucking sugarcoat it. Show how evil it was. Show how horrible their innocent little children were treated. Make the audience uncomfortable. Make sure they learn from that history so that they never repeat it.
