Hi, hope this isn't a dumb question, but which translation of the divine comedy would you recomend? I would just google it, but fear if reddit would just recomend the most "reddit"-y one for a lack of a better descriptor
I favor the Mandelbaum. He doesn't try for terza rima the way Binyon or Sayers do, which leads to strained rhythms and word choices, but also doesn't settle for a prosaic quasi-blank verse like Musa or Ciardi. Instead he writes a tight poetic line that exploits the genuine sonic resources of English—based not on rhyme but on alliteration—to capture Dante's rich texture in the Italian. (Not that I'm fluent, but I have looked into Dante's Italian.) Plus, Mandelbaum was a brilliant literary thinker in his own right, neither flighty poet nor dry-as-dust scholar; his introductions are superb as are the notes, which I think other scholars contributed. (I read his translation in the three-volume Bantam Classics edition with the Italian on the facing pages, not the big expensive one-volume Everyman's Library.)
Caveat: some people revere the Hollanders' version, which I've never read. It supposedly has the best notes, and, for what it's worth, it appears to be the "Reddit" choice.

The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri: Inferno
Verse translation by Allen Mandelbaum / illustrated by Barry Moser
University of California Press 1980
Published in 1980, the California Dante is an absolutely gorgeous set of books. Each volume is beautifully laid out in parallel with Mandelbaum’s verse translation on the verso facing the original Italian. Each book is also printed in two colors—red for Inferno, green for Purgatorio, and blue for Paradiso—highlighting the captions of the illustrations, and each is typeset in an elegant monotype Dante, a typeface designed in 1957 by Giovanni Mardersteig. In total, there are 96 pen and wash drawings in the books, and amazingly Moser began the illustrations for Inferno as late as 1979. However, he states that “most of those which appear in [Inferno] were, in fact, done during a single violently productive month—July, 1979.”

I've chosen December 1st, World AIDS Day, to observe the Hyacinthia and honor our ancestors who perished from that horrible disease. For me, the story of Apollo and his beloved Hyacinthus perfectly encapsulates the tragedy of the epidemic, when so many lives and loves were lost unwittingly.

For Paradiso, Barry Moser moves into highly abstract territory, and the drawings—where there might have been two or three images per page in Inferno—are now resolved in diptychs with one image for two pages. Perhaps counter-intuitively, Paradise is also much darker with large swaths of black ink dominating the pages. In order to achieve this, Moser literally reversed his process. The images were conceived as negative drawings, which were then photographically reversed so that the negative space became positive and vice versa—with the exception of one, the Crucifixion.

🌼🌸 anon here to make your day a bit sweeter !! you're an amazing person and i hope you've had an amazing start of the week. now, onto some nosy questions: where do you get your inspiration for your character(s) from? are there specific types of medias that have influenced the way you write or maybe even specific writers (maybe even from the rpc)? anyways, i hope your week continues to be sweet and amazing because the best of the best is what you deserve, dear friend !!

my main inspiration for minato are mainly death poems by buddhist monks; an amazing source would be japanese death poems: written by zen monks and haiku poets on the verge of death, compiled by scholar yoel hoffman; and the woodblock triptych, takiyasha the witch and the skeleton spectre by utagawa kuniyoshi. other than that, i honestly just read a ton of textbooks and research papers during what little free time i have.
ignoring how deranged he got in old age (lol), i draw a lot of inspiration from f. sionil jose's prose, as well as madeline miller, anne carson's translations of sappho's poetry, three versions of judas by jorge luis borges, and allen mandelbaum's translation of dante's inferno.
i don't read novels or prose as much as i used to, but i do enjoy poetry and reading historical texts. sometimes being a history major has its perks lol, and scholarly texts occasionally have some banger passages if you look hard enough. in particular, i really enjoy rev. john n. schumacher and teodoro agoncillo's books on philippine revolution. compilations of poems and records are also huge sources of inspiration, such as david hinton's translations of chinese classical poetry, yoel hoffman's death poems as mentioned earlier, samuel hazo's translation of adonis' poems, and cyril birch's translation of the peony pavilion.
i hope this encourages you to look to other sources for inspiration from writing; you never know where you can find your next big influence! and have a good day :)

Now that you've re-read some of the great epic poems, do you plan to revisit The Aeneid, and see how it stacks up now, since you found the more 'epic' qualities half hearted in your review, and the more lyrical qualities more wholehearted (Aeneid is a favorite work of mine, even if it isn't quite as vital or full blooded as either the Iliad and Odyssey or Paradise Lost)
I'll definitely revisit it at some point, probably in a different translation. I read Sarah Ruden's previously, which I loved. Maybe next time I'll do Allen Mandelbaum, since I like his Dante, or the prose translation by W. F. Jackson Knight extolled by Paglia in Sexual Personae as the only version to capture the poem's "uncanny daemonism." On the other hand, perhaps the muscular Robert Fagles will be more persuasively Homeric. If I didn't make this clear, I loved the lyrical or decadent parts—loved Dido especially—I just found the "Iliadic" parts dull.
