Danganronpa V3 Commentary: Part 2.6
Be aware that this is not a blind playthrough! This will contain spoilers for the entire game, regardless of the part of the game I’m commenting on. A major focus of this commentary is to talk about all of the hints and foreshadowing of events that are going to happen and facts that are going to be revealed in the future of the story. It is emphatically not intended for someone experiencing the game for their first time.
Last time, Kaito attempted a rematch with the casino’s slot machines and regretted it, we hung out again with Gonta, who was innocently oblivious to what a ridiculous videogame crossover his backstory is, Kokichi manipulated Gonta into doing his bidding in a far more dickish way than was probably necessary, and so nearly everyone participated in what was totally not a narrative excuse to give them all potential alibis for a potential murder that might be about to be a thing.
Now it’s almost time for Himiko’s magic show, which is clearly going to go off without a hitch, right?
Monosuke:  “It’s a little early, but I’ll go ahead and do the nighttime announcement, too! It’ll be 10 p.m. later!”
Is Monosuke doing this because he knows they’re going to discover a body soon and so there won’t actually be a nighttime announcement today? Kirumi did come to him to clarify the rules about entering the gym at nighttime.
It’s morning, but… the motive video is not back on the table in Shuichi’s room? It really should be. And then it would be interesting if we could confirm that it still is Kaito’s.
Tsumugi:  “Yeah, it’s just… the sounds of those bugs buzzing is still in my head… Even after I went to bed, I just kept hearing it… so I didn’t get that much sleep…”
Again, I really hope this is true.
Shuichi:  “Well, Gonta did say that he thought he saw a really tiny bug once…”
Tsumugi:  “Oh yeah, he did say that! But even with Gonta’s 20/0.625 vision, he could only barely see it, right? So… isn’t it possible he was just plain mistaken?”
Trying to get Shuichi to stop thinking about what those “tiny bugs” could really be, Tsumugi?
Kirumi:  “I see… so Kokichi truly does intend to oppose us. …No matter, let’s go inside.”
Yeah, no matter, because one way or another she won’t have to worry about Kokichi any more after today.
Gonta:  “Gonta so sorry about yesterday… Gonta not know why he act that way…. Gonta too forceful… Still have long way before Gonta call himself true gentleman.”
Aww. At least he’s snapped out of it and realised how out-of-control he was.
Tenko:  “Your gullible mind will eventually lead you down the wrong path in life!”
…GAH.
Gonta:  “After Insect Meet and Greet, Kokichi’s mouth start to bubble, then he pass out…”
Good. He deserved that.
Shuichi:  “Himiko, are you a bit… nervous?”
Himiko:  “J-J-J-Just a little bit!”
Himiko’s nerves are probably just an act for the sake of the show. The trick isn’t actually that difficult, at least the part involving getting out of harm’s way before the piranhas come along. I imagine the only really hard part is getting changed and dried quickly enough, which would ruin the magic if she messed it up, but not endanger her life.
It’s also massively insensitive of Angie to decide to use something so deadly after what everyone here has already been through with regards to people dying. But of course Angie wouldn’t care or realise that.
Tenko:  “O-Of course… I believe in your magic… You’re… my precious friend…”
I would think this line is cute, except that… Himiko isn’t Tenko’s friend. Tenko’s just trying to tell herself that. They’ve barely interacted on a normal level that isn’t Tenko constantly hitting on her and Himiko not being interested. I’m the world’s biggest sucker for friendship (as you can probably tell by now), but this weird triangle between Tenko, Himiko and Angie has very little of that.
Shuichi:  (What happened to Kaito? I thought he’d be here for sure… I wonder if something happened…)
The reason Kaito isn’t here turns out to be completely arbitrary and not plot relevant at all, so the real reason for this is purely the game trying to make you afraid that he’s dead. Anyone who’s figured out that the murder probably happened last night and that the victim is going to be shockingly revealed during the magic show should be very, very worried for Kaito right now, since he’s the only one of the missing people who has no good reason not to be here.
For whatever reason, on my first time through, it didn’t occur to me that the murder had already happened, so I was only worried for Himiko here. This is the only time the game was trying to make me afraid Kaito was dead and I didn’t fall for it… which, honestly, I’m kind of sad about. Being repeatedly terrified that Kaito is dead and then turning out to be wrong every time is part of the fun of this game! …Right?
Gonta:  “G-Gonta can’t take it anymore!”
(Gonta cried out, leaped out of his seat, and…)
Oh, Gonta. It’s just like him to not realise that this suspense is all part of the show and get so genuinely worried that he goes and risks ruining the magic.
Kirumi:  “Wait… Gonta!?”
Kirumi is not pleased with this development, since if Gonta sees nobody in the tank then it’ll be easier to figure out where Ryoma’s body really was.
The timer saying “DEATH” is really unnecessarily dark… but then, all this equipment was provided by the people running the killing game.
Tumblr media
You can indeed see something vaguely Ryoma-shaped fall in behind the piranhas if you look closely. I’m surprised the pane of glass wasn’t visible too, though.
And then there’s maybe ten seconds where everyone panics, in which the piranhas don’t start eating Ryoma until Angie opens the curtains? I guess we can pretend they were disoriented for a moment from falling into another tank.
Given how incredibly gruesome in theory what happens here is, I really, really appreciate that the game shows it with as much discretion as is possible while still showing it at all. It’s still a little disturbing, but man, it could have been a lot more so, and I’m very glad the writers realised that that was not remotely necessary.
Himiko:  “Behold! The magnificent Underwater Esca—”
Himiko’s all smiles as she appears for her dramatic escape, suggesting that her nervousness really was all an act.
Technically the body discovery announcement should have started playing the moment they saw the body and continued to play over him being eaten, but I guess Monokuma wanted to have a little more dramatic timing.
Himiko:  “Nyeh? A body…? In the gym?”
Apparently Himiko was too focused on changing clothes and getting dry to even hear the commotion happening in the water tank next to her and realise something was wrong. Ouch.
Himiko:  “… … Nyeh?”
And then this is her reaction to seeing the body, because she has no idea how to express the horror of it, so she just… doesn’t. Poor Himiko.
Kokichi:  “Yeah, break it. It’ll take too long to drain it by hand.”
Except that it will also take a long time to clean up the mess made by breaking the tank, and that will be considerably more gross.
It’s also a massive dick move, as per usual, for Kokichi to suggest using Keebo as a battering ram. There are any number of suitable things in the gym they could have used – the stepladder, one of the basketball hoops – that aren’t a person.
Shuichi:  (A wall of piranhas and water dyed red with blood washed out.)
Red. Confirming that this isn’t a universe in which blood is actually pink and that Monokuma’s comment last chapter about “pink smears” was indeed very meaningful.
The narration then handwaves over how they cleaned it all up. Everyone’s feet should now be soaked with gross bloody water, but nobody talks about that.
Maki:  “This… wasn’t an accident, was it? Does this mean… the killing game has started again?”
Naturally, Maki is the first to voice the fact that this was clearly murder while everyone else is being shocked and bewildered.
Kokichi:  “H-How…!? How could this happen!? We… swore to each other, didn’t we? We swore we’d never let the killing game happen again! So that was all just a lie! You guys are liars!”
Says the person who yesterday was actively attempting to increase the chances of a murder happening. What this is, again, is Kokichi trying to make a point of how empty and insincere everyone’s words about co-operating sound now that something like this has happened, to try and make it seem like those words were always insincere. No, funnily enough, Kokichi, most people here did not secretly want this to happen and it is not their fault that it did.
Monokuma finally shows up. You’d think he could have helped with the cleaning, or drained the pool before they even broke it, since it’s necessary for them to be able to investigate. I guess the gamemakers weren’t expecting a body to end up in a pool and so didn’t give Monokuma a handy water pump.
Monokuma:  “And new mascots present lots of exciting business opportun—”
I’m still skeptical that anyone would want to buy merchandise of the Monokubs. But the fact that they’re here at all does kind of fit in with the overall plot twist, since it does come across like an obvious marketing attempt.
Maki:  “I’m not going to investigate either.”
Gonta:  “…Huh?”
Maki:  “You’ll be fine if you’re short a person, and I doubt a child caregiver would be much help.”
This is not a good argument; most people here except Shuichi don’t have talents that would help much with this. Of course, Maki just wants an excuse to get out of here and go back to guarding her lab. She’s probably even more afraid right now that if someone sees her true talent, they’ll falsely suspect her.
Shuichi:  (But why would she say that now? She participated in Rantaro’s investigation.)
Not really, though? All she did was stand in a room (alone, which everyone had agreed not to be) and give her testimony when asked for it.
Kaito:  “Well, I’ll have a talk with Maki later.”
Damn right he will! I love that Kaito is already worried by Maki’s behaviour and thinking about how to help her even before he learns about her true talent.
Kaito:  “I’m seriously pissed we gotta do this, but it’s our only chance to survive.”
Kaito still does not enjoy having to suspect everyone of murder, heh.
Tenko:  “I know her best! Right, Himiko?”
Again, Tenko, no, not really. But she does at least know the fact that Himiko wouldn’t kill anyone better than Angie does, so that’s something.
Kirumi:  “To solve this mystery, we must first learn the trick behind Himiko’s Underwater Escape Act…”
Not necessarily, since the culprit themselves didn’t know the trick. Kirumi is trying to mislead people into thinking Himiko’s trick is more important to this murder than it really is and therefore that Himiko probably did it.
Kaito:  “Hey, Shuichi, you got a sec?”
Shuichi:  “Hm? What’s wrong?”
Kaito:  “Before we start the investigation, there’s something I gotta tell you… You’re my sidekick from now on!”
Yes! This is a very important thing that needed to be established.
In fact, I’m certain that Kaito had already begun thinking of Shuichi as his sidekick from the moment Shuichi agreed to train with him. The reason he’s only going out of his way to mention it now is because he believes that knowing this will help Shuichi during the investigation.
Kaito:  “I’m more of a scientist kinda guy, so I’m not really cut out for investigations.”
Shuichi:  (But… that’s a good quality to have for an investigation…)
Yyyeah. And the fact that Kaito is actually pretty bad at investigating makes me think he probably wouldn’t make a very good scientist either, at least in terms of doing research. Which is definitely something he’d need to get better at in his astronaut training. Although I gather astronauts mostly carry out experiments that they’re instructed to do by people in mission control, so maybe he wouldn’t need to be a good research scientist after all?
Kaito:  “Plus, the only stage fit for Kaito Momota, Luminary of the Stars, is the universe itself. So I’ll leave the details to you. Pave the path for my success!”
Again, Kaito is doing his thing where he makes it sound like this is all about him and Shuichi is just along for the ride, in order to take the pressure off Shuichi. In reality, every bit of this is Kaito trying to help Shuichi out.
Kaito:  “Don’t worry about it. I’ll make all the tough calls, you just gotta do what I say. So… I’ll take full responsibility. Since you’re my sidekick, there’s nothing to worry about.”
Kaito knows that Shuichi doubts himself and is afraid of making mistakes and causing another tragedy like what happened with Kaede. By doing this, Kaito is trying to minimise Shuichi’s worry about that as much as possible because if Kaito is nominally the one in charge then everything bad will be his fault, right?
Shuichi:  (Kaito making me his sidekick like this… Could it be…? Is he trying to help me?)
Of course he is! It’s great that Shuichi is able to pick up on that and understand that it’s not remotely Kaito being self-centred. It’s also notable that Shuichi realises this after Kaito declares that he’ll take responsibility, suggesting that that in particular is the part that started making Shuichi feel less afraid.
Monokuma File:  No other injuries can be confirmed at this time.
You know, except for the massive fracture on his skull. It’s weird that that isn’t in the file considering it’s blatantly visible anyway, and it’s also weird that nobody comments on it during the investigation or trial despite that it is somewhat relevant to the murder, since he was knocked out before being drowned.
Kaito:  “So that means the key to this case is the time of death! Hah, there ya go! I knew I picked a good sidekick!”
Look at Kaito already encouraging Shuichi and being proud of him for making deductions!
Kaito:  “My first command to my new sidekick is… Investigate everywhere and find clues that will lead us to the culprit!”
Shuichi:  (He’s pretty commanding, as I expected…)
But that kind of commandingness is pretty much what Shuichi needs right now in order to do the things he needs to do without hesitating or doubting himself.
Gonta:  “When piranhas attack Ryoma… If Gonta had dived into tank… Then Gonta coulda help Ryoma. But Gonta got scared. Too scared to do anything.”
Awww, Gontaaaa. This would be one of the cases where he’d feel most like he really could have done something to prevent it.
Gonta:  “Sorry! Gonta really sorry!”
Kaito:  “A man shouldn’t apologize so easily… And if you had jumped in, they just woulda eaten you too.”
Again, the important part here is the “so easily”. Gonta jumping in wouldn’t have been the right thing to do, since it wouldn’t have worked and would have got him killed too. He shouldn’t apologise for not having wasted his own life.
Also, remember that Kaito never mentioned his concept of manliness to Shuichi while giving him advice during training or just now. He clearly understands that Shuichi doesn’t buy into that concept and it wouldn’t help him. He’s mentioning it to Gonta only because Gonta’s gentleman thing makes him assume that this kind of talk might be something Gonta would buy into and be helped by.
Shuichi:  “And from what I read in the Monokuma File, you couldn’t have saved him anyway, Gonta.”
Gonta:  “Huh? Really? Does it say that in Monokuma File?”
Yes, it specifically says right here, “Gonta could not have saved Ryoma”.
Kaito:  “You haven’t even read the Monokuma File yet?”
Gonta:  “No… Gonta not really understand it… Gonta not smart enough to be help…”
If Gonta had read the file, he probably would have understood it – he is not actually that stupid that he wouldn’t be able to comprehend “the cause of death was drowning”. He only assumes he’s too stupid to understand it, and so he just flounders in his perceived uselessness rather than being willing to at least try to overcome it.
Kaito:  “What are you talking about!? If you’ve got time to apologize, you’ve got time to read the file! If you think you can’t help, then work till you can! That’s what you can do!”
Kaito is so good! His principle about not apologising when it’s not your fault is all rooted in the concept that you should always be working to improve things and thinking about what you can do instead of pointlessly wallowing in the regret of what you couldn’t do. Kaito himself is probably hating the fact that Ryoma died and that he couldn’t do anything to stop it, too, but right now he’s focusing on helping in the best way he can, by supporting Shuichi.
Kaito:  “Then when did Ryoma get in there? You didn’t see it happen?”
Gonta:  “Gonta dunno… Everyone see Ryoma in tank when piranhas drop in. After that… S-Sorry! Gonta shoulda watched tank better!”
Kaito:  “Like I said, a man shouldn’t apologize so easily!”
Gonta is just so unsure of himself. He assumes that because he didn’t see anything in the tank before the piranhas (and Ryoma) dropped in, then it must be because he wasn’t watching it closely enough, not because there genuinely wasn’t anything to see. That’s why Kaito keeps telling him not to apologise. Gonta clearly did his best, and was more focused on saving Himiko than watching the tank anyway because he couldn’t have known that watching the tank would become important to a murder investigation. He has nothing to apologise for.
It’s a little strange that Kokichi is here during the investigation of the gym, since apparently the very first thing he does once the investigation begins is sneak off to Ryoma’s room to steal Maki’s motive video. He doesn’t have anything of substance to say in here, so the writers could easily have just had him not be here at all.
Himiko:  “Nyeeeh… my magic was supposed to make everyone smile…”
Aww, Himiko. She wanted to make everyone smile, just like Kaede! The one time she tries to do the thing she’s good at to help everyone, and this happens.
Tenko gets aggressive when they keep trying to get Himiko to explain the trick.
Kaito:  “Man… this guard is more strict than the security at idol events.”
You… have experience with that, Kaito? Mind you, I can see Kaito appreciating idols for more than just the shallow reasons, since the idea behind idols other than being eye candy is that they’re supposed to inspire people and be role models. That’s something Kaito can definitely get behind.
Keebo:  “…when was Ryoma murdered?”
Kaito:  “Well, in the middle of the show, obviously.”
See, Kaito is not a good investigator at all. There was clearly not enough time to drown Ryoma during the show. Admittedly Kaito didn’t see the show and doesn’t know how short a time there was until his body showed up, but, still.
Kaito:  “In other words, everyone watching the show isn’t suspicious.”
…That narrows down the suspects to himself, Maki, and Kokichi, if he believes this. He obviously doesn’t think Maki did it – does he think Kokichi did, then?
Kaito:  “I forgot a promise… so I was just eating breakfast.”
And here’s Kaito’s reason for not being at the show. I’m pretty sure this is a mistranslation: the word “promise” in Japanese can also mean something like “appointment”, or “arrangement”. I think what he’s really supposed to be saying is that he forgot the time that the magic show was going to happen and therefore just went to have breakfast like normal. So it’s a completely irrelevant coincidence that he wasn’t there; things were written this way solely to first make you afraid he might be dead, and now to make you afraid he might be the culprit.
It’s still a little strange that Kaito would do this, though; even if he forgot the time of the show, he should have remembered it the moment he showed up in the dining hall and found nobody else in there. So maaayyyybe there’s a little more to it than this, and it has something to do with him already beginning to feel sick and not wanting anyone to know about it?
Ryoma’s clothes are folded up next to his skeleton during the investigation. Except… in the cutscene, his clothes were ripped to shreds by the piranhas, which makes far more sense than them having carefully eaten his body without damaging his clothes.
Kaito:  “Tch… what the heck is this? Hey, is this really Ryoma?”
Kaito sounding annoyed and dismissive like this is probably his way of dealing with the fact that someone he knew and cared about is now nothing but a skeleton.
(I mean, who else would the skeleton be, Kaito; nobody else is this small.)
Shuichi:  “Ryoma wasn’t trying to die. He said as much. He was jealous of us… who wanted to live.”
Kaito:  “Huh? What do you mean he was jealous?”
Shuichi:  “I’m positive that Ryoma wanted to join us. That’s why he needed a reason to live. So that he could have the same feelings we do, so that he could have that reason to keep going. To fight alongside us…”
Kaito:  “…”
If a little late, Shuichi passes on to Kaito what Ryoma said to him yesterday… and this is Kaito realising that his judgement of Ryoma was wrong. He was weak, but he wanted to get stronger. Kaito could have helped him.
Kaito:  “Then… he was a real idiot. Who cares if you don’t have a reason to live? Can’t your reason for living be something simple like good food or your friends?”
Kaito also has something of a point here. If Ryoma was so desperate to fight with everyone that he was looking for any kind of reason to grab hold of no matter what, then it didn’t need to be something big and fancy. It could have simply been everyone else here, whom he clearly cared about already.
Of course, there is more to the reason Ryoma gave up and died than that, but Kaito doesn’t know about the motive video.
Kaito:  “There was a ladder next to the stage! I’ll go get it!”
Shuichi:  (Kaito quickly headed off to the stage. He returned carrying the ladder that was set up beside the stage over his shoulder.)
The Ace Attorney fan in me is mortified that Shuichi doesn’t refer to it as a stepladder instead, leading to an Important Discussion between him and Kaito about what to call it. We’ve got an investigator and his sidekick (you decide which is which) with very contrasting personalities, finding a stepladder at a crime scene – the setup is perfect.
Kaito:  “But, y’know… shouldn’t the sidekick be the one bringing the ladder?”
Maybe in a normal person’s definition of “sidekick”, but not in yours, Kaito. You should know that. This is him still trying to pretend that this is mostly about himself and that he’s in charge, to keep the pressure off Shuichi.
Kaito:  “Well, our investigation’s over now… So who’s the culprit?”
Again with Kaito not being very investigation-savvy. Shuichi’s not going to have figured it out just from this.
Kaito:  “Good luck, Shuichi! After all, it’s gonna be you doing all the heavy lifting here!”
Shuichi:  “Ah… right.”
Kaito:  “What do you mean, ‘right’!? Are you saying I’m useless!?”
Shuichi:  (…Is there a right way to respond to that?)
Good job throwing yourself under the bus there, Kaito. I like how Shuichi doesn’t respond, because he doesn’t think Kaito is useless at all in terms of emotional support and doesn’t want him to feel like he is.
(It is interesting that Kaito apparently assumes Shuichi might think that about him, though, huh. This is very early days to be bringing up that aspect of Kaito’s arc, but that is something.)

Behind the Iron Curtain
Prologue
There’s an Italian proverb circulating online that goes, “if you don’t go, you don’t see; if you don’t see, you don’t know; if you don’t know, you tend to take it in the ass every time”. What a description! I think this phrase absolutely encapsulates the essence of travelling – to paraphrase, we often get so caught up with our own lives, cultures and social groups that once in a while, an adventure abroad opens our eyes yet again to the simple reality that we live in a vast, diverse space shared by 7 billion other people, most of whom sharing a different way of life compared to oneself.
Recently, I had the fortune of embarking on such a journey myself – to East Berlin, behind the old Iron Curtain that once hung over Europe, splitting the world into two halves…
…But who am I kidding. The REAL start of this trip began with a simple promotional email from Krisflyer advertising an unbelievable fare from SIN-LHR for $990. With a fare like that, who needs the wisdom of Italian proverbs to persuade one to travel? After finding some suitable dates, a simple tap on my phone seals the deal. Better still, after some googling, I discover that SQ has recently scheduled their new A380 on certain LHR flights. Yet another reason to travel.
After many (internal) debates trying to decide between SQ’s many flights to LHR I finally pick SQ308 for my outgoing flight. While operated by a non-refurbished A380, I figured it would be the best option to beat jetlag, it being a daytime flight. It would also give me a good yardstick for comparison with the new A380 cabin product on the way home. And so it was, that on a very early Monday morning in May, I found myself on a Grab (Southeast Asia’s Uber) car on the way to Changi after an excitable, sleepless night.
Flight #1: SIN-LHR
After a seamless check-in process, and pausing to check whether the seat next to me remained empty (it was), I waltzed through immigration and went straight for T3’s Ambassador Transit Lounge. Unfortunately, I’ve lost my pictures of the lounge, but suffice to say there are better lounges out there in SIN. However, since I was there for free on a travel insurance promotion, I still appreciated the pre-flight shower and small breakfast. However, the lounge offered a great view of the tarmac, and I managed to catch a glimpse of the magnificent A380 taking me to LHR being towed slowly to our gate.
SQ has always been considered one of the world’s best airlines, but in my many years of lurking on Airliners.net and Flyertalk I’ve read a great deal of opinions on the subject. It’s really quite interesting to see such polarised views. Half of the community gush with praise over both the hard and soft products – the seats are well-designed, fabrics are colourful, legroom is excellent, food is delicious and the service is sincere, prompt and incredibly polite. The other half moan about the odd angle of the J class seats that somehow defies sleep (oh the horror), and the service that is ruthlessly efficient but robotic, almost as if the cabin crew were going through the motions.
My own experience with SQ has been a mixed bag. There was a time when I took no other airline but SQ when travelling. Hence, with steady demand from the home crowd like myself, SQ flights were usually priced beyond the competition ex-SIN. However, since about 10 years ago, the Internet started to give each person the ability to be one’s own travel agent. Hence, the average consumer could now discover a plethora of flight options online for himself. My relationship with SQ was therefore put on ice as I flew with the cheapest options available. This therefore started my long journey trying out various airlines – MH, JL, QF, BA, DL, AF, UA, BR, NH, etc – before finally returning to SQ not too long ago. Since then, I’ve flown SQ twice, and today’s flight would be my third.
Tumblr media
Today’s A380 bringing me to London would be 9V-SKS, a 6-year old aircraft fitted with the old cabin product. I was greeted warmly as I made a right turn upon embarking the aircraft, and settled in my aisle seat in the foremost economy cabin, situated right behind Suites. This was only my second trip in an SQ A380 – the first (also my first ever A380 flight) was made a great deal many years ago on SQ11/12 to LAX. To put things into perspective, this same cabin product was considered new when I last stepped on-board an SQ A380. Incidentally, SQ11/12 is now operated by a 77W, having been downgauged sometime between the years.
First impressions of this flight were certainly not helped by my last two SQ flights in the last 6 months having been operated by a 77W and a new A350 respectively. This cabin was definitely showing its age – my tray table was stiff and couldn’t be pulled towards me, the buttons on the IFE remote were starting to fade, and the plastics in the toilet had started to peel off. Small wonder, then, that SQ is launching a billion-dollar refurbishment of its remaining A380s in the fleet. Honestly, given SQ’s high standards, and comparing my experiences on newer cabin products on the 77W and A350, this can’t come soon enough. This A380 really stuck out like a sore thumb.
Tumblr media
The seat itself was reasonably comfortable for a day flight, even a 13-hour-long one. The legroom, however, was slightly hampered by the thick footrest. Thankfully, since the seat next to me was empty (a rare luxury), I could cope by angling my body to the side and stretching out, although I suspect my chiropractor would have a thing or two to say about my posture in doing so. I can’t imagine trying to sleep here on a night flight, though. Just as well that I elected to remain awake the entire flight.
I’d like to talk a bit about the crew at this point. The crew on my flight were nothing short of exceptional, particularly in how they indulged the children on the flight. One particular stewardess even took some time to greet each child that she passed by during the busy boarding process, going down to eye level and striking a small conversation with each child. I understand flying can be an incredibly stressful process for parents of young children, so I’m sure her efforts went a long way to create a welcoming atmosphere for families, young and old alike. She was also very proactive during the flight in offering gifts to the children, and even gave the children extra gifts to bring back to their friends back home. Clever marketing!
Unfortunately though, the child in the bassinet seat in front of our economy cabin section didn’t really seem to enjoy the flight at all. In fact, she cried most of the way! Maybe her tray table was broken too and she didn’t like that too much either. Whatever the case, her parents looked stressed beyond belief. But here’s where the story takes a sweet turn for the better. Seeing the palpable distress on the couple’s faces, the gentleman sitting next to them on the aisle seat offered to take the baby for a bit to give the couple some rest and respite. To their delight and relief, he carried her up and down the cabin, entertaining her by pointing out various interesting objects in the cabin. She even stopped crying! Observing incidents like these are really why I love travelling. After all, “if you don’t go, you don’t see”, right? Acts of kindness like these help restore my faith in humanity in our troubling world today. I’m really not sure I can imagine anything like this happening at home in SIN, where the likely response from someone in the gentleman’s position would be complaints to the crew, dirty looks at the parents, or a brusque walk-out in search for another seat.
The rest of the flight passed without incident, and after a series of boring movies, TV shows and lots of music and Sherlock Holmes stories from my phone, we arrived at LHR about 5 minutes behind schedule. Immigration was quick as I was one of the first off the plane, and I found myself on the Tube to central London in no time at all.
It’s quite hard to make a concluding statement on this particular SQ flight. On one hand, this cabin did not meet any of SQ’s standards at all. I’ve been on BA flights where the cabin was better-maintained. Nevertheless, despite the cabin being old, its bright design still infused in the weary traveller a sense of calm and peace. I guess I would categorise it as a comfortable and pleasant-enough day flight, but I suspect a long red-eye would have left me the worse for wear.
London
As I’ve been to London before on previous occasions, I decided to use this trip as an opportunity to discover more of the UK. Hence, my time in London was limited to doing some shopping and taking a stroll in Hyde Park.
