In the garden I still working on my potato trench. I have been gardening for several years now. When I first started I dug over the ground and use a rotavator that I shared with dad. The first one broke beyond repair. We got another one, bigger but heavier, more challenging to use.

Being a carpenter I had picked up a few injuries which possibly triggered me being diagnosed with early stages of arthritis in my joints; more in my shoulders and ankles. I found in 2019 that rotavating was causing me painful episodes. I knew that I was going to have to make changes to my way of doing things. I was looking at the no-dig method and considering raised bed gardening, maybe a combination of the two. The biggest stumbling block was the cost to convert the whole garden.
Last year, I had a couple of problems; the U.K. lockdown meant that I couldn’t get share the rotavator and I had issues in getting the compost I needed. It forced me into trying to come up with something else.
I started digging trenches for potatoes and it worked. The benefit was more efficient in how I did my gardening. I did wide trenches for my potatoes but I realised say for my parsnips and other seeds I didn’t have to have a wide trench; just dug say 100mm/4 inch width trench, kind of V shape. This saved on the amount of compost that I had used in the wider potato trench. The plant’s roots know how to deal with the ground. That work out too; had some good sized parsnips.
Last autumn, I looked again at what I was doing. I just didn’t want to waste my time and money on doing raise beds. The trench method seemed the way forward. My garden slopes in the width and length. I decided to level out the width as in my mind if I dig all trenches then I’m going to end up with fair amount of spoil. By levelling up it means I part did a trench then use the spoil to make up. The downside is putting in the trenches means not being efficient in spacing my vegetables through out the garden.
