winter or summer: oof, depends where. probably summer but i don't love sweltering weather, so if i'm able to be somewhere where i'm not burning up but just pleasantly warm, it's perfect.

Top 6 Nuclear Energy Trends in 2022

The rising price of electricity poses the question of affordable energy, and therefore of nuclear energy, says the Christian blogger Incarnare. For him, the Church should take up this debate, which raises many ethical questions.

1. Nuclear Energy

Until a year ago, being anti-nuclear was one of those convenient ideological attributes that allowed one to rally those who rejected it without completely alienating those who saw in this technology a cheap and low-polluting source of nuclear energy.

From being an object of theoretical speculation, the issue instantly became very concrete: in the same way that our elected officials lose all ecological ambition as soon as the price of gasoline at the pump approaches €2, the same people who were promoting a competitive market immediately put in place tariff shields. It is likely that the Council of State will harshly judge their inconsistency as it had, in 2016, pinned Ségolène Royal for her 2014 intervention on the regulated sales tariff. 2. A Political Choice to be Made (and assumed)

The 2022 presidential election will determine our ecological ethics, our strategic autonomy and our future competitiveness. And the key question that candidates should be asked is: “Among the scenarios developed by RTE (the electricity transmission operator, in charge of the stability of the network) for 2050, which one do you consider the most desirable?

In this respect, the rate shield that has been introduced induces a very problematic bias in the democratic debate, since, by mitigating the impact of the wholesale market price on citizens’ bills, the rate shield anaesthetizes their awareness of the issues and consequences that their vote could have.

3. Tomorrow Begins Today

5. Sobriety Too

A frequent criticism of nuclear energy by those who are not radically opposed to it is that it makes possible (and therefore encourages) an expensive lifestyle that has important consequences on the environment, apart from the strict issue of warming (and therefore decarbonization).

One of the most prominent nuclear lawyers, Jean-Marc Jancovici, has been federating for more than two years a hundred collaborators within the “Shift Project” to produce.

In a recent interview on the Youtube channel Thinkerview, Jancovici indicated that he had not yet had any contact with the representatives of religious communities. It would be incomprehensible that the leaders of a Church that is advancing in the dynamics of Laudato si’ do not dialogue with the representatives of such an initiative in the civil sphere, especially since we find on both sides the concern for the service of mankind, especially in the workplace (the attention that the authors of the plan pay to the reconversion of entire sectors of the economy is in line with many intuitions of the encyclical Laborem exercens).

6. Conclusion

From being a totem for the “anti”, nuclear energy has become a sign of contradiction, and a touchstone for the credibility of our elected officials when they talk about the environment. Nuclear capacity will reach 582 GW in 2040, according to current trends and regulatory targets, significantly below the 730 GW necessary in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario.

Robotech (TV series)

Robotech (1985) is an original story adapted with edited content and revised dialogue from the animation of three different mecha anime series:

Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982–1983)

Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross (1984)

Genesis Climber MOSPEADA (1983–1984)[6]

Harmony Gold's cited reasoning for combining these unrelated series was its decision to market Macross for American weekday syndication television, which required a minimum of 65 episodes at the time (thirteen weeks at five episodes per week).[7]Macross and the two other series each had fewer episodes than required, since they originally aired in Japan as weekly series. On some television stations, the syndicated run was preceded by the broadcast premiere of Codename: Robotech, a feature-length pilot.

This combination resulted in a storyline that spans three generations, as mankind must fight three destructive 'Robotech Wars' in succession with various invading forces, each of which is motivated in one way or another by a desire for a powerful energy source called 'protoculture'. While each of the three animated series used for its footage informs its content, the Robotech storyline is distinct and separate from each of them.

The First Robotech War (The Macross Saga) concerns humanity's discovery of a crashed alien ship and subsequent battle against a race of giant warriors called the Zentraedi, who have been sent to retrieve the ship for reasons unknown. In the course of this chapter, Earth is nearly annihilated, the Zentraedi are defeated, and humans gain knowledge of the energy source called protoculture. Humanity also learns of the Robotech Masters whose galactic empire the Zentraedi protected and patrolled.

The Second Robotech War (The Masters) focuses on the arrival in Earth orbit of the Robotech Masters, who have come seeking what turns out to be the sole means in the universe of producing protoculture. Through a combination of mistrust and arrogance, their attempts at retrieving this meet with opposition from the humans and unleash a war that leaves the Masters defeated and Earth awash in the spores of a plant called the Flower of Life—the source of protoculture and a beacon to the mysterious Invid who scour the galaxy for its presence.

The Third Robotech War (The New Generation) begins with the arrival on Earth of the Invid, who are lured by the Flower of Life and rapidly conquer the planet. References in the previous two chapters explain to viewers that many of the heroes of the First Robotech War had left Earth to seek out the Robotech Masters on a preemptive mission, and it is this Robotech Expeditionary Force that sends missions back from across the galaxy to attempt a liberation of their homeworld. The storyline follows one group of freedom fighters as they work their way towards the final battle with the Invid.

Robotech: The Movie

Robotech: The Movie, also called Robotech: The Untold Story, is a feature film and was the first new Robotech adventure created after the premiere of the original series. It uses footage from the Megazone 23 – Part 1 OVA (original video animation; made-for-video animated feature) combined with scenes from "Southern Cross" and additional original animation produced for the film.

The original plan for the film was to have it set during the Macross Saga, parallel to the SDF-1's return to Earth from Pluto. The film would also have served as a prequel to the Sentinels, as both projects were initially meant to share many characters. Harmony Gold producer Carl Macek worked with the OVA's original creators to make the story and the new ending work. The film had to be changed again after the distributor of the film, Cannon Films, saw an incomplete rough cut of the film and were upset by it. They ordered Macek to remove multiple scenes from the film and to add more violence (most of the scenes removed were scenes setting up characters and showing female characters interacting). Macek reluctantly did what they ordered, and created a new script and rough edit for the film in less than 24 hours. When the distributors saw Macek act out the new film, they were much more pleased with the new cut.[8] The opening night in Texas received a positive response, but Cannon Films pulled out after noting that most attendants were adults; the bulk of the scheduled advertising for the series was targeted to children. The film had limited success in Argentina and Belgium.[citation needed]

In 2011, A&E Home Video released, as a part of their Robotech: The Complete Series collection, a 29-minute version of Robotech: The Movie containing only footage used from "Southern Cross". There was no attempt to remaster the footage.[9]

Robotech II: The Sentinels

This aborted American-produced series would have followed the continuing adventures of Rick and Lisa Hunter and the Robotech Expedition during the events of The Masters and The New Generation. The feature-length pilot is composed of the first three (and only) episodes that were produced. The Sentinels featured characters from all three Robotech sagas and introduced the SDF-3 along with an overview of their new mission. The series was planned to have a total of 65 episodes.[10]

In Robotech Art 3: The Sentinels, Carl Macek blamed the cancellation of the series on the crash of the Yen/Dollar exchange rate,[11] which caused toy partner Matchbox to withdraw from the project. Harmony Gold lacked the funds to produce the series on its own, and production ceased after only three episodes.

Robotech II: The Sentinels was released on VHS by Palladium Books.[12] In 2011, a "remastered" version was released on the A&E DVD set, Robotech: The Complete Original Series DVD. This version has opening titles resembling those found on the "Robotech Remastered" DVDs, as well as a new ending with text explaining the fate of the SDF-3. Also, all of the flashback footage used from "The Macross Saga" has been removed, including the re-used footage from the episode "Wedding Bells".[13]

In 2002, Tommy Yune announced development of a new sequel film, which was untitled until 2004 as Robotech: Shadow Force. The storyline overlaps with and continues from the unresolved ending of the original series. The title of the story arc was soon changed to Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles. The first trailers with finished animation were shown at Anime Expo and Comic-Con International in 2005. It was not until February 2006, when Kevin McKeever, operations coordinator at Harmony Gold, was able to confirm that the pilot movie had been completed. After a series of delays, FUNimation Entertainment was finally announced as the home video, broadcast, and theatrical distributor at the 2006 Comic-Con International in San Diego with the possibility of producing further sequels. Harmony Gold premiered the movie at various film festivals in 2006, and it was first seen by a public audience at MechaCon on August 9, 2006, where it was showcased as a charity screening to help raise funds for the ongoing Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita recovery effort. A limited theatrical run followed in January 2007, and the film was released on DVD on February 6, 2007.[14] A two-disc collector's edition was released in November 2007.[15]

What’s that you say? Doesn’t look very pink here. This was the view of the back garden when I opened the curtains. Dark(ish) Frosty (very) and a bit foreboding.

But a quick swivel to my left, from due South to South East and WOW.

This was the view through the woods.

During sunsets and sunrises, when the Sun is closer to the horizon, sunlight has to travel through a longer distance and more of the dense environment to reach an observer’s eye.

When sunlight strikes, gas molecules such as nitrogen and oxygen; light of longer wavelengths, like red, yellow, and orange, easily passes through; while light of shorter wavelengths, such as blue and violet, is absorbed and then scattered in all directions by the gas molecules (stay with me)

When you look up at the sky during the day this scattered blue and violet light reaches your eyes, however, the human eye is more receptive to blue frequencies than violet frequencies, so the sky looks blue. This phenomenon is known as Rayleigh scattering: it’s named after British physicist John William Strutt, also known as Lord Rayleigh, a nobel prize winner no less. Besides making the sky look blue, it is also the reason why the Sun looks yellow during the day even though sunlight is white. When the Sun is high in the sky, the light has to travel a shorter distance through the atmosphere. This means most of the yellow, orange, and red light passes through, while a small amount of blue and purple light is scattered and removed from the mix. The Sun, therefore, looks yellow for us here on Earth.

Due to Rayleigh scattering, most of the light of shorter wavelengths (blue, violet, and green) are scattered away multiple times, leaving only lights of longer wavelength (red, orange and yellow) to pass straight through to the observer.

This is why a rising and setting Sun tends to take on spectacular hues of red, orange, and yellow.

And yes, I did have to look all of that up!

We’ve been speculating about the effect of less air and road travel on air quality during lockdown and read that the quality of the air that sunlight has to pass through also has an effect on the colour of sunrises and sunsets. Dust particles and pollutants tend to tone down the colours in the sky as well as impede light from reaching those of us looking from ground level. Because of this, the sky takes on dull hues of red and yellow when the air is full of dust and pollutants. This is why sunrises and sunsets in rural areas, over the ocean, and deserts are much more vibrant and colourful than over cities and urban areas. It’s information that’s very relevant to me having had eye operations which totally changed my perception of colours.

As lovely as our skies were in this rural area, I don’t think they compete with the views down at Rye Harbour looking out to sea.

The Egyptian Goose is a very distinctive looking small goose with its chestnut eye patches and pink legs and is a member of the shelduck family. In the wild it is invariably found in pairs or family parties. Flocks of 50 or more can be found after the breeding season.

They were once common along the entire Nile valley and in ancient times were regarded as sacred, but the Egyptian Goose is now largely confined to upper Egypt. It is, however, widespread and common throughout sub-Saharan Africa and there are introduced populations firmly established in England, Holland, Belgium and France. They were brought to Britain in the late 17th century as an ornamental bird for the lakes of country gentlemen and apparently as an exhibit at St James’ menagerie.

Egyptian Geese are early breeders, with pairs defending potential breeding sites from January onwards. Cavities in trees are favoured, but they may also nest on the ground.

Unfortunately, as always happens with introduced species, which become ‘invasive; there are concerns over conflict with native species which have now lead to restrictions on keeping them in Britain and Europe. 

The UK Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019 came into force on Sunday 1st December. The Order implements requirements contained in EU Regulation 1143/2014 on Invasive Alien Species, which sets out rules to prevent and minimise the impact of the introduction and spread of non-native animals and plants across the EU. The Order makes it an offence, amongst other things, to import, keep, sell, transport, breed or release into the environment, any of the listed plants and animals. Invasive alien waterfowl currently covered by this Order are Egyptian Geese and Ruddy Ducks

I was going to say that was the last time we saw any, but thinking about it, there were some on the lake at Petworth House when we went last year.

Males and females look alike,except the female is smaller and often has darker markings on the bill. Their calls are distinctly different. The male emits strong but hoarse hissing sounds, while the female makes harsh, trumpeting quacks. I’ve put a sweet little video of a pair towards the end of this blog. 

The main concentration of Egyptian Geese in England, is at Holkham Park where recent counts have totalled as many as 170 birds.  Indeed today, according to The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust. Norfolk holds over 90% of the national population of some 900 birds.

In their tropical African home Egyptian geese frequent rivers, marshes and lakes resorting to a wide range of nesting sites. Cavities and holes in trees and abandoned nests of other birds may be selected; also ledges on cliffs and banks. 

Males will draw attention to themselves for the mating season with noisy displays and fierce territorial fighting both on water and on land. Rivals will stand or swim, breast to breast, continually attempting to seize each other's backs near the base of the neck, while beating with wings and even striking with feet. It all sounds very violent.

Once mating has taken place, following on from egg laying, the birds almost disappear until the time comes to escort flotillas of goslings to the water. Clutches of eight or nine eggs hatch after about four weeks. The downy chicks are similar in markings to those of the Shelduck (confusing, but as I said, they are related) Sadly, despite the clutch size, it’s often the case that only one or two young survive following predation by Crows and competition with Canada Geese and Greylags. I suppose like Pheasants, the large lay compensates for the mortality rate.

Your enemies will continue to follow you with persecutions and they will make obnoxious laws against you in Congress to destroy the White Horse, but you will have a friend or two to defend you and throw out the worst parts of the law so they will not hurt you so much. You must continue to petition Congress all the time, but they will treat you like strangers and aliens and they will not give you your rights, but will govern you with strangers and commissioners. You will see the Constitution of the United States almost destroyed. The White Horse will find the mountains full of minerals and they will become rich (at this time, it must be remembered, the precious metals were not known to exist in either the Rocky Mountains or California). You will see silver piled up in the streets. You will see the gold shoveled up like sand. Gold will be of little value then, even in a mercantile capacity; for the people of the world will have something else to do in seeking for salvation. The time will come when the banks of every nation will fall and only two places will be safe where people can deposit their gold and treasure. This place will be the White Horse and England’s vaults. A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America, such has never been seen before; for the land will be left without a Supreme Government, and every specie of wickedness will be practiced rampantly in the land. Father will be against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother. The most terrible scenes of bloodshed, murder, and rape that have ever been imagined or looked upon will take place. People will be taken from the earth and there will be peace and love only in the Rocky Mountains. This will cause many hundreds of thousands of the honest in heart of the world to gather there, not because they would be Saints, but for safety and because they will be so numerous that you will be in danger of famine, but not for want of seed, time and harvest, but because of so many to be fed. Many will come with bundles under their arms to escape the calamities for there will be no escape except only by escaping and fleeing to Zion. Those that come to you will try to keep the laws and be one with you for they will see your unity and the greatness of your organization. The Turkish Empire of the Crescent will be the first power to be disputed, for freedom must be given for the Gospel to be preached in the Holy Land. The Lord took the best blood of the nations and planted them on the small islands now called England and Great Britain and gave them power in the nations for a thousand years and their power will continue with them that they may keep the balance of power; and they will keep Russia from sweeping her power over the world. England and France are now bitter enemies but they will be allied together and be united to keep Russia from conquering the world. The two popes, Greek and Catholic, will eventually come together in their decline and be united. The Protestant Religions do ot know how much they are indebted to Henry VIII for throwing off the Pope’s bill and establishing the Protestant faith. He was the only monarch who could do so at that time and he did it because the nation was at his back to sustain him. One of the peculiar features in England is the established Redcoat; a uniform making so remarkable a target to shoot at, and yet they have conquered wherever they have gone. The reason for this will be known to them some day as red is seen in a different color threading through under all history. The lion and the unicorn of England comes from there being so much blood of Israel in the nation. While the terrible things of which I have mentioned are going on, England will be neutral until it becomes so inhuman that she will interfere to stop the shedding of blood and history will be more properly understood. Continuing, he said: “During this time the Great White Horse will have gathered strength, sending out elders to gather the honest in heart from among the Pale Horse, or people of the United States, to stand by the Constitution of the United States as it was given by the inspiration of God. In these days which are yet to come God will set up a Kingdom never to be thrown down, but other Kingdoms to come into it, and those Kingdoms that will not let the Gospel be preached in their lands will be humbled until they will.”

“England the Germany, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium have a considerable amount of the blood of Israel among the people which must be gathered out. Those nations will submit to the nations of God. England will be the last of the nations to surrender, but when she does she will do it as a whole in comparison as she threw off the Catholic power. The nobility knows that the gospel is true, but it has not pomp enough, and grandeur and influence for them to yet embrace it. They are proud and will not acknowledge the Kingdom of God or come into it until they see the power it will have. Peace and safety in the Rocky Mountains will be protected by the Guardians, the White and Red Horses. The coming of the Messiah among his people will be so natural that only those who see him will know that he has come, but he will come and give his laws unto Zion and minister unto his people. This will not be his coming in the clouds of Heaven to take vengeance on the wicked of the world.”

“The temple in Jackson county, Missouri, will be built in that generation. The saints will think that there will not be time to build it, but with all the help you can receive, you can put up a great temple quickly. You will have all the gold, silver, and precious stones you need, for these things will only be for the beautifying of the temple. Also, all the skilled mechanics you want and the Ten Tribes of Israel will help build it. When you see this land bound with iron, you may look forward to Jackson county.”

At this point, he made a pause, and looking up as though the vision were still in view, he said: “There is a land beyond the Rocky Mountains that will be invaded by the heathen Chinese unless great care and protection be given.” Speaking of the heathen nations, he said: “Where there is no law there is no condemnation; this will apply to them. Power will be given to the White Horse to rebuke the nations afar off, and you obey it, for the laws go forth from Zion. The last great struggle that Zion will ever have to contend with will be when the whole of America will be made the Zion of God. Those opposing will be called Gog and Magog. The nations of the earth will be led by the Russian Czar and his power will be great, but all opposition will be overcome and this land will be the Zion of our God. Amen.”

My holiday till now was great. The Andalusian beaches were filled with hot women and lots of cheap drinks. Spitzer observed Trappist-1 nearly around the clock for 20 days, capturing 34 transits. Together with the ground observations, it let the scientists calculate not three planets, but seven. The planets are too small and too close to the star to be photographed directly.

All seven are very close to the dwarf star, circling more quickly than the planets in our solar system. The innermost completes an orbit in just 1.5 days. The farthest one completes an orbit in about 20 days. That makes the planetary system more like the moons of Jupiter than a larger planetary system like our solar system.

“They form a very compact system,” Dr. Gillon said, “the planets being pulled close to each other and very close to the star.”

In addition, the orbital periods of the inner six suggest that the planets formed farther away from the star and then were all gradually pulled inward, Dr. Gillon said.

All of the victims have been restored to their normal selves, and the Doctor reveals that he trapped the Wire’s essence in a Betamax tape – presumably pulled from the Doctor’s infamous bottomless pockets since it wasn’t available until 1975 – effectively inventing the home video thirty years early. Families are reunited and Mrs. Connolly kicks her abusive husband out of the house. It’s in grandma’s name after all. There was also a missed opportunity to highlight the Doctor’s fear of heights at the transmission tower.

Otherwise, the mystery and the action really kept this one going.
