MSNBC’s “The Weekend” didn’t hold back in their criticism of Donald Trump’s incendiary remarks at an NRA event, where he openly mused about President Joe Biden deserving the electric chair. Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric accusing Biden of foreign collusion was met with swift condemnation from the show’s hosts and former White House aide Sarah Matthews.
Alicia Menendez wasted no time highlighting the gravity of Trump’s words, deeming them far from ordinary: “A political candidate casually hinting at the execution of a sitting president in front of fervent gun advocates—definitely not normal.”
Former RNC chair Michael Steele didn’t mince words either, questioning the motives behind Trump’s audacious statements.
“Look, okay, so Trump is a liar, well established, we know that. The projection around Biden taking money from Russia and all these places, we know that. But, when you are standing in front of a group like the NRA, when you are standing in front of a group that has very, very strong views about this administration, the Biden administration and Donald Trump for that matter, what is the signaling, from inside the bubble a little bit with Trump, what is the signaling that is going on there? Is it as blatant as making a comment about executing a president or is it something more or something less, is it just Trump standing there running his mouth?”
Sarah Matthews, drawing from her experience in the Trump administration, emphasized Trump’s deliberate pandering to his base, even at the expense of decency. She criticized Trump’s cavalier attitude, noting that he treats it like a joke, but joking about executing a president is beyond the pale, especially before a crowd known for its fervent support.
“I think that Donald Trump knows this audience that would be at a convention for the NRA are people that are a part of his base. And so he’s going to say things like this where it is going to rile them up and get them excited,” Matthews said. “I think he knows that, in his mind, he thinks it is a joke where he’s joking about ‘Oh, he needs the electric chair,’ but you shouldn’t be talking about that with anyone in general, but especially not the sitting president.”
Matthews also underscored the danger of normalizing such rhetoric, warning against the desensitization to Trump’s inflammatory language. “This is not normal,” she asserted. “We cannot allow a presidential candidate to make light of executing a sitting U.S. president.”

MSNBC has quietly taken three of its Muslim broadcasters out of the anchor’s chair since Hamas’s attack on Israel last Saturday amid America’s wave of sympathy for Israeli terror victims.
The network did not air a scheduled Thursday night episode of The Mehdi Hasan Show on the streaming platform Peacock. MSNBC also reversed a plan for Ayman Mohyeldin to fill in this week on the network for host Joy Reid’s 7 p.m. show on Thursday and Friday. Mohyeldin, an Egyptian-American journalist and veteran NBC News correspondent covered the conflict from Gaza for two years. In 2021, he aggressively questioned Israeli leaders on strikes on the territory. Two network sources with knowledge of the plans told Semafor that the network also plans to have Alicia Menendez fill in this upcoming weekend for Ali Velshi, a third Muslim-American host who on Sunday interviewed a spokesman for the Palestinian Authority.
Some staff at MSNBC have been concerned by the moves, feeling all three hosts have some of the deepest knowledge of the conflict. NBC says the shifts are coincidental, and the three continue to appear on air to report and provide analysis.

Several gold bars discovered by federal agents in Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez's residence as part of a high-profile bribery investigation can be traced to a violent robbery a decade ago.
According to a sprawling indictment unsealed by federal prosecutors in September, Menendez and his wife allegedly played a role in a years-long bribery scheme that involved the Egyptian government and local businessmen including Fred Daibes, a wealthy New Jersey real estate developer. Prosecutors revealed they retrieved multiple gold bars from Menendez's home which were allegedly used as payment in the scheme.
At least four of the gold bars discovered by investigators can be linked to Daibes, both because of their unique engraved serial numbers and thanks to court documents related to a 2013 robbery which Daibes was a victim of, an NBC New York investigation revealed Monday. In November 2013, four assailants beat and robbed Daibes at gunpoint in his Edgewater, New Jersey, apartment, stealing 22 gold bars, jewelry and cash.
"Each gold bar has its own serial number," Daibes told local investigators in a 2014 transcript obtained by NBC New York. "They’re all stamped … you’ll never see two stamped the same way."
5 EXPLOSIVE REVELATIONS FROM DEM SEN BOB MENENDEZ'S BOMBSHELL FEDERAL INDICTMENT
Photographs released by the Department of Justice in September showing the gold bars discovered at Menendez's home, for example, reveal one of the bars has a serial number of "590005." Daibes reported a gold bar with that same serial number stolen during the 2013 heist, NBC New York reported.
And the federal indictment notes that the serial numbers on the gold bars indicate they had previously been possessed by Daibes.
MSNBC'S ALICIA MENENDEZ ADDRESSES FATHER'S INDICTMENT: COLLEAGUES HAVE 'AGGRESSIVELY' COVERED
"A court-authorized search of the residence of Robert Menendez and Nadine Menendez, a/k/a ‘Nadine Arslanian,’ the defendants, revealed, among other things, approximately two one-kilogram gold bars and nine one-ounce gold bars that had serial numbers indicating they had previously been possessed by Fred Daibes, the defendant," the indictment states.
In addition, when Daibes reported the robbery to police in 2013, he said 22 gold bars had been taken. Similarly, the September indictment states that Daibes sold 22 gold bars to Wael Hana, another defendant allegedly implicated in the bribery scheme.
Police ultimately arrested and charged four individuals for robbing Daibes in 2013, according to local media reports. Then, in September 2015, the suspects all pled guilty and were ultimately sentenced to several months in prison.
Meanwhile, since the federal bribery indictment was unsealed earlier this year, Menendez has repeatedly asserted his innocence and remained in the Senate.
"The allegations leveled against me are just that, allegations," Menendez said Sept. 25. "For anyone who has known me throughout my 50 years of public service, they know I have always fought for what is right. My advocacy has always been grounded. And what I learned from growing up as the son of Cuban refugees, especially my mom, my hero, Evangelina Menendez. Everything I accomplished, I worked for despite the nay sayers and everyone who has underestimated me.
"I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I still will be New Jersey’s senior senator," he added.  "The court of public opinion is no substitute for our revered justice system. We cannot set aside the presumption of innocence for political expediency when the harm is irrevocable."

David Hogg is one of my heroes. He is a survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida who went on with several classmates to organize the March For Our Lives.
He is now encouraging young people not just to vote but to run for federal and state office. He co-founded an organization called Leaders We Deserve to help younger progressive candidates.
This is not an attempt at generational or institutional war. As David explained, Leaders We Deserve (LWD) wants to create an intergenerational coalition for change within the progressive community. LWD furthers this by supporting younger progressive candidates who wish to run against older rightwingers. The advisory board of LWD includes veteran progressives such as Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-09) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD-08).
One of many reasons to support LWD is that much of the emphasis will be on state legislatures. The LWD site says, "At least 80% of the candidates we support will be running for State Legislative seats.". I have frequently encouraged people to take a lot more interest in their state legislatures. Until recently, liberals have badly neglected state politics – and we've seen the results of such neglect in states like Florida.
For more information about Leaders We Deserve, check out their site. Leaders We Deserve | Invest in Young People
To make a contribution, you do so via ActBlue. Leaders We Deserve — Donate via ActBlue
Surprisingly, one of the biggest success stories ever for electing young people to office is Joe Biden. He had not yet reached his 30th birthday when he upset incumbent Republican J. Caleb Boggs for US Senate in Delaware. Get involved now and you could go way far.

BONUS TRACK: Consider running for state legislature in your state this decade. In some states the minimum age is 18 – though 21 and 25 are more common. Look up the eligibility requirements for your state.
