Georges Bizet was was registered with the legal name Alexandre-César-Léopold Bizet, but was baptized Georges Bizet and was always known by the latter name. He entered the Paris Conservatory of Music a fortnight before his tenth birthday. Georges Bizet's first symphony, the Symphony in C Major, was written there when he was seventeen, evidently as a student assignment. It seems that Bizet completely forgot about it himself, and it was not discovered again until 1935, in the archives of the Conservatory library. Upon its first performance, it was immediately hailed as a junior masterwork and a welcome addition to the early Romantic period repertoire. A delightful work (and a prodigious one, from a seventeen-year-old boy), the symphony is noteworthy for bearing an amazing stylistic resemblance to the music of Franz Schubert, whose work was virtually unknown in Paris at that time (with the possible exception of a few of his songs). A second symphony, Roma was not completed. In 1857 a setting of the one-act operetta Le docteur Miracle won him a share in a prize offered by Jacques Offenbach. Georges Bizet also won the Music Composition scholarship of the Prix de Rome, the conditions of which required him to study in Rome for three years. There, his talent developed as he wrote such works as the opera Don Procopio. Apart from this period in Rome, Bizet lived in the Paris area all his life. His mother died shortly after his return to Paris. He composed the opera Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) for the Theatre-Lyrique in 1863, which was an initial failure. He followed it with La jolie fille de Perth (1867), and Jeux d'enfants (Children's games) for the piano. The popular L'arlésienne were originally produced as incidental music for a play by Alphonse Daudet, first performed in 1872. Georges Bizet also composed a romantic opera, Djamileh, which is often seen as a precursor to Carmen, 1875. This latter opera is Bizet's best-known work and is based on a novella of the same title written in 1846 by Prosper Mérimée. Bizet composed the title role for a mezzo-soprano. Carmen was not initially well-received but praise for it eventually came from well-known contemporaries including Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Their views proved to be prophetic, as Carmen has since become one of the most popular works in the entire operatic repertoire. However Bizet did not live to see its success, as he died from angina at the age of 36 a few months after its first few performances, on his third wedding anniversary. He was buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Georges Bizet's music has been used in the 20th century as the basis for several important ballets. The Soviet-era Carmen Suite (1967), set to music drawn from Carmen arranged by Rodion Shchedrin, gave the Bolshoi ballerina Maya Plisetskaya one of her signature roles; it was choreographed by Alberto Alonso. In the West the L'Arlesienne of Roland Petit is well-regarded, and the Symphony in C by George Balanchine is considered to be one of the great ballets of the 20th century. It was first presented as Le Palais de Crystal by the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947, and has been in the repertory there ever since. The ballet has no story; it simply fits the music: each movement of the symphony has its own ballerina, cavalier, and Corps de Ballet, all of whom dance together in the finale.

By 1875, the 36-year-old Georges Bizet had enjoyed only moderate success in the opera house with The Pearl Fishers (1863) and The Fair Maid of Perth (1867). Five projects had progressed no further than sketches.

After the composer’s one-act opera Djamileh (1871), a director of Paris’s Opéra-Comique, Camille du Locle, suggested that Bizet collaborate with two of Paris’s leading librettists: Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy (a cousin of Bizet’s wife).

Bizet proposed they adapt a novella by Prosper Mérimée, Carmen. Having completed the orchestration by the summer of 1874, he was in no doubt about the quality of what he had written: “They make out that I am obscure, complicated, tedious, more fettered by technical skill than lit by inspiration. Well, this time I have written a work that is full of clarity and vivacity, full of colour and melody.”

How right he was.

During the lengthy rehearsals, Bizet fought hard against a reluctant management to retain the earthy realism of the story of Carmen, the brazen cigarette-factory girl whose flirtations with an army officer and a toreador end with her dramatic murder. The composer was constantly revising the score to tighten the action and heighten the tension.

The original Carmen, Célestine Galli-Marié, instructed him to rewrite the famous Habanera no fewer than 14 times to accommodate her voice. Ironically, this most famous of mezzo-soprano arias was plagiarised by Bizet from El Arreglito, a song by Spanish composer Sebastián Yradier (1809-65).

Carmen was first performed on March 3, 1875. Its critical reception dealt Bizet a terrible blow. Unprepared for the sight of women smoking on stage, the “low-life” characters and its theme of erotic obsession, the critics damned Carmen as “vulgar”, “undramatic” and “contemptible”.

Yet, despite Bizet’s resignation (“a definite and hopeless flop”), it had a respectable run of 37 performances that season alone, added to which Bizet was made a Chevalier De La Légion D’honneur and received from his publisher the fairly hefty sum of 25,000 francs for the score.

On the night of Carmen’s 31st performance Bizet died of a heart attack, still believing his opera was a failure. Within months, a second production of Carmen in Vienna was acclaimed as a masterpiece.

In the next three years, it was produced in almost all the major opera houses of Europe. Its impact was greatest in Italy, for Carmen was the forerunner of the verismo operas typified by Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci.

As for the music, Richard Strauss summed it up: “If you want to learn how to orchestrate, don’t study Wagner’s scores – study the score of Carmen.”

Numa curta carreira devido à sua prematura morte, ele atingiu poucos sucessos antes do seu trabalho final, Carmen, que viria a se tornar uma das mais populares e frequentemente interpretadas óperas no repertório operístico.

Anthony Quinn (Antonio Rudolfo Oaxaca Quinn) nasceu em Chihuahua no dia 21 de abril de 1915 e morreu em Boston em 3 de junho de 2001. Foi um premiado ator norte-americano nascido no México. Anthony Quinn talvez seja o ator que mais papéis diversificados fez, e caracterizou-se por representar personalidades famosas: foi Barrabás e o magnata grego Onassis. Dentre outros gregos que interpretou está talvez o seu papel mais carismático: Zorba.

Franz Kafka nasceu em Praga, Império Austro-Húngaro, atual República Tcheca no dia 3 de julho de 1883 e morreu em Klosterneuburg, República Austríaca, atual Áustria em 3 de junho de 1924. Foi um escritor de língua alemã, autor de romances e contos, considerado pelos críticos como um dos escritores mais influentes do século XX. A maior parte de sua obra, como A Metamorfose, O Processo e O Castelo, está repleta de temas e arquétipos de alienação e brutalidade física e psicológica, conflito entre pais e filhos, personagens com missões aterrorizantes, labirintos burocráticos e transformações místicas.

Uma que logo se seguiu, pelo contrário, literalmente penetrou nas costas dele; Gregor quis continuar se arrastando, como se a dor, surpreendente e inacreditável, pudesse passar com a mudança de lugar; mas ele se sentia como se estivesse pregado no chão e esticou o corpo numa total confusão de todos os sentidos. Com o último olhar ainda viu a porta do seu quarto ser escancarada e a mãe se precipitar de combinação à frente da irmã que gritava; pois a irmã a tinha aliviado das roupas para permitir que ela respirasse com liberdade enquanto estava desacordada; viu-a correr ao encontro do pai e no caminho cair ao chão, uma a uma, as saias desapertadas; e viu quando ela, tropeçando nas saias, chegou até o lugar onde o pai estava e, abraçando-o em completa união com ele – mas nesse momento a vista de Gregor já falhava - , pediu, com as mãos na nuca do pai, que ele poupasse a vida de Gregor. 『愛情啊，就像難以馴服的飛鳥，更像毫無規矩的吉普賽頑童…你若不愛我，沒關係，但若是讓我迷戀上了你，注意，可就要當心囉！』 . 親愛的好友們，無論您是否為iPhone歌單裡只見巴哈與蕭邦的古典音樂重度（中毒）上癮者，想必您也都聽聞過『卡門』（Carmen）這齣歌劇，而且透過改編曲或是廣告的放送下，對於劇中幾首詠嘆調或是合唱曲的旋律也應該都是耳熟能詳的… . 但是您知道嗎？這部至今在全世界各大舞台都備受無上推崇的作品，首演當天，其實是在滿場觀眾不滿的噓聲中被迫草草收場的；然而更加諷刺的是，當『卡門』一劇開始受到觀眾肯定的那一天，卻也正是無情死神帶走作曲家的同一天… . 10月25日，就是這位被命運之神開了一個好大玩笑的音樂家，出生於法國，喬治．比才（Georges Bizet，1838－1875）的生日！ . 誕生於花都巴黎，本名Alexandre César Léopold Bizet，父親是聲樂老師，母親是鋼琴老師的比才，在雙親積極栽培之下，幼年就接受了完整的音樂教育… . 記憶力絕佳的他，年僅9歲時就以天賦洋溢的才華，破格獲准進入當時首屈一指的巴黎音樂學院，更接連拿下許多校內音樂獎項。19歲那一年，比才更一舉勇奪象徵年輕藝術家最高殊榮的『羅馬大獎』（Prix de Rome）！不只被視為神童再世，樂界對他亦是前途一片看好！ . 西元1863年，25歲的比才，從義大利學成歸國，隨即譜出了個人的首齣歌劇『採珠者』（Les pêcheurs de perles），優美的曲風配合著動人的故事情節，深深吸引了巴黎主流劇院裡的觀眾，讓他一舉躍上了第一線音樂家的璀璨舞台； . 西元1872年，他以戲劇配樂『阿萊城姑娘』（L'Arlésienne）再度獲得好評，也奠定了他在法國樂壇的地位… . 西元1873年時，比才有鑑於追求戲劇音樂的創新，於是取材自法國寫實文學家梅里美（Prosper Mérimée，1803－1870）的小說『卡門』，想將其譜寫為一齣極富異國情調的歌劇作品，並且決定要融入了他個人最擅長的高張力戲劇配樂風格… . 當時的比才，說實在話，已經站上法國藝術舞台的巔峰，因此眼下的成就，或許不是重心所在，他只希望，『卡門』有朝一日，能夠成為法國古典樂壇一部真正足以傳世的經典巨作！ . 可惜的是，音符間充滿著野心與盼望，認為『卡門』一劇絕對能讓觀眾感到滿意的比才，此刻，卻萬萬沒料到，那遠大的理想，其實已經替他擲下了人生豪賭的不歸路… . 因為在西元十九世紀七零年代的法國巴黎，用市場經濟學的角度來分析，觀眾的胃口，早已習慣於歐陸宮廷樂曲風的輕快、典雅，欣賞歌劇，更可說是一種接近時尚的表現，大家從舞台服裝到登台飾品無一不講究，呈現出的，毫無疑問，是一種華麗堆砌而成的美感… . ㄟ，那比才到底賭注是錯押在哪裡呢？ . 第一：一般歌劇裡，女主角幾乎都是『女高音』為主，因為聽眾喜歡的是興奮至極到無法言語的天籟之音，但比才用了『次女高音』來做為女主角，雖然他認為這才是符合他的音樂，可是實際上觀眾根本不買帳… . 第二：宮廷爭寵、英雄救美戲碼是巴黎歌劇界的票房保證，不然就是搬出聖經傳奇故事，就如同台灣的八點檔一定要有『黑道』和『小三』；比才用一個發生在西班牙賽維亞地區的吉普賽走私女郎愛情故事為主軸，然後外加帥氣的鬥牛士與為愛生恨的駐軍伍長，雖然他認為故事情節一流，可是實際上觀眾完全無法接受… . 第三：巴黎人都是吃完晚宴後，盛裝打扮來欣賞歌劇。但『卡門』的設定，台上沒有滾蕾絲邊禮服的公主、王子，盡是一些衣衫不整的吉普賽人，雖然真實呈現劇情，但實際上觀眾感到非常不舒服… . 所以，連番的錯誤，絲毫沒有修正的餘地，西元1875年3月，『卡門』的初登場，不幸地，以全面性慘敗作收！ . 歌劇院內，不只現場觀眾噓聲四起、吵雜鼓譟地要求退票，連舞台上扮演走私者或乞丐的演員們亦感到相當難堪，甚至直接嗆聲，打臉比才： . 『比老弟，不是俺要說你，咱們歌也唱了那麼多年，就屬TMD（不好意思沒辦法翻成中文）今天最難熬…說實在話，你這部歌劇真的很爛，真的很爛，要不乾脆丟臉一場就好，不要再繼續演下去了…』 . （待續） #歌劇 #音樂 #歷史 #法國 #卡門 #西班牙 #鬥牛士 #Bizet #history #music #opera #france #carmen #songs #drama #birthday #life #composer https://www.instagram.com/p/BpWUBv6lJ7B/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xl6d6fgp7z6r
