FINALLY figured out the name of one of my favorite typefaces!

Microgramma (1952)

(also created by Aldo Novarese was Eurostile (1962) under which is a super similar variant, but Microgramma is typically defined by that sexy sexy all-caps with other minor differences).

I love seeing it out and about on mid-century structures, like my local power station.

Forma DJR Banner is the adaptation, designed by David Jonathan Ross (DJR), of the original 'Forma' typeface, with the help of Roger Black ( typographer and editorial designer). The typeface contains 18 different font variations. They describe the font as: 'A stylish revival of the classic Italian sans by DJR and Roger Black.' The original typeface 'Forma' was created in 1968 by a team of 8 designers, led by Aldo Novarese, and was said to be 'Italian type foundry Nebiolo’s answer to Helvetica'. Nebiolo was Italy's most successful type and printing equipment manufacturer, however with Nebiolo never making the transition to prototype, the foundry that thrived from 1852 and throughout the 20th century, was later closed in 1978. Meaning Forma virtually disappeared. However, in 2013, publications designer, Roger Black, who had always admired the typeface asked type designer, David Jonathon Ross, to revive the Typeface for his redesign of Hong Kong Tatler magazine. Initially looking at Forma, DJR thought it was a bit boring, but with the addition of rogers perspective, he saw the typeface in a new light. The two had to look past, what DJR calls the 'obvious Helveticaishness' of the typeface and instead recognize 'the culmination of an entire era of typography: an era when formal purity was the ultimate design achievement, when the spacing of headlines was outrageously tight, and when neutral neo-grotesque sans serifs were actually something fresh and exciting to read.' Their aim was to revive that excitement with Forma DJR Banner.

Typography Tuesday

EUROSTILE & MICROGRAMMA

While watching the Netflix short series HALSTON (which I recommend, btw), I became intrigued by Halston’s typographic logo, which I had never paid much attention to before. I could tell it was an extended version of a san serif I was not familiar with; kind of chunky, yet lithe. I was strangely attracted to its balance in this particular string of letters: the horizontally-elongated H and N at either end; the pyramidal A; the L and T forming a diagonal to each other across the very central, upright S; the TV-screen O. Very satisfying. But, what typeface is this?

Well, it wasn’t hard to find out: it is Eurostile Extended designed by Aldo Novarese in 1962, which itself is a modification of Microgramma designed by Novarese and Alessandro Butti in 1952. Both were designed for the Nebiolo Type Foundry where the two designers served as art directors. Microgramma is a display face in all caps. After Butti died in 1959, Novarese revised the design, adding lowercase letters and developing a family of seven font styles.

I was curious if we held any books that use Eurostile, and indeed we do!! And it’s a book I know well: Synesthesia, shown here, by Terence McKenna and Tim Ely, published in New York in an edition of 75 copies by Granary Books in 1992. It uses both Eurostile Normal and Extended, handset and printed by the master letterpress printer Philip Gallo at his Hermetic Press in Minneapolis.

Forma vs Helvetica 

In 1965 the Nebiolo foundry management set up a research committee of graphic designers to sit beside Aldo Novarese. A working group of eight prominent figures from Milan’s graphic design scene was set up to collaborate on new typefaces.
