How does FC5 compare to the previous two? (If you've played then that is)
Heya! I’m sad to say that I must disappoint- I’ve never played 3 or 4. I was familiar with the series on an exceptionally general level, but 5 was the first one I decided to play.
But I’ll give a rundown anyway. Apologies, I have a habit of rambling, and this has turned out no differently, I’m so sorry!
So basically, from what I’ve gathered, outside of the general bubble of FC5 superfans, lots of people consider 3 and 4 to both be better than 5. This is definitely the case with 3, I think people are more on the fence about 4.
So I’ll get the negatives out of the way, then go positive!
As much as I adore 5, I will admit that there are a lot of inconsistencies in the writing, plot holes, things that are never explained, timelines that don’t make sense etc. There’s also a desperate lack of screentime for all four of the Seeds, since they all have to share, whereas I don’t think Vaas and Pagan Min are competing with that many other antagonists?
Another divisive point is the mute, nameless ‘Deputy’ protagonist. It’s perfect if you like character creation, or just project yourself onto the character, but there’s no Ajay or Jason here if a set character is more your thing.
And the ending (well, the ‘canon’ ending) is another point which people think lets the game down, but that’s simply a matter of personal taste. I really like it personally, and how it paves the way for New Dawn. I think I’ve heard that there’s a chance to sort of join Pagan Min’s side in 4 (might be wrong here??? Maybe it’s more a ‘turn against the resistance’ thing???) and I remember people specifically saying they were disappointed that there wasn’t that option in 5.
But now for the positive!
I believe 5 is much in the same vein as 3 and 4, in that the main story of the game is to kill enemies and blow things up, so if you enjoyed that in the others, it’s absolutely perfect for you! Hope County is wonderfully detailed, and the regions are so fun to explore- I love driving everywhere, just to look at how beautiful the scenery can get. I’m not sure if the other games are open world, but 5 is definitely open, the freedom you get is great.
Also, very few radio towers to climb hahahahaha
The Guns for Hire system (which I think is a new feature in 5, and not in 3 or 4????) is very enjoyable, and there’s so many moments of humour you can have with these larger than life characters (plus you can run around with a pet bear... a BEAR <3). Also there’s some familiar faces- Hurk is back, with parents this time, and his cousin Sharky, who’s just hilarious hahahaha
And despite their amount of screentime, the Seeds are still really great villains, extremely charismatic and strangely easy to sympathise with. Just kind of want to give them a hug. The wider community of players I think consider Vaas and Pagan Min to still be better, but the Seeds are brilliant in their own way (I ADORE them, they’re so complex and exceptionally performed, not a day goes by where I don’t wish for more content about them).
Finally, the whole cult angle is awesome. So much research went into the game, and the development of the religious aspects, that it feels pretty recognisable to real life situations where cults have arisen (aside from the drug fuelled parts, but ah well). They’re mysterious, yet brazen, stupid, yet intelligent, completely wrong and yet strangely... right?
So if you’re thinking about giving 5 and then New Dawn a go, I say go for it! I hope you have a blast! And I’m so sorry I couldn’t give you a direct comparison, but I hope these general points help you out! x
