Ais and Honesty
Another loresheet snippet i'm (minorly) expanding on and (majorly) looking to see what people think about it! It was just a small thing I noticed, having to collect all of these lines and shit, and that's that a lot of Ais's lines have to do with honesty.
Not just this line, of course. In the Red Spring post about the Amaryllis District, he says, "This district is the worst and only place to be honest in Eridia." And then he says this about Vere:
Not only that, but when Ais tells the MC to reconsider the Seaspring, and that he himself doesn't think drinking is worth it unless their curse is killing them, MC says, "You could've sold me if you were less honest. You're a shit salesman."
Honestly (ehehe) even when playing the demo the first time, I was struck by how open Ais is about things—his frankness actually moved my interest in him above Leander, my previous #1 . Honesty is a core value for me IRL, so something tickled me about the violent mindfreak demon bluntly telling you he ditched you because he was lonely. He might kill me, but at least he won't lie to me~ Dream man for sure.
IDK what all this talking is culminating in, I just thought it was really interesting. It's cool to see a positive, “good” trait like honesty be shown in the recurring behavior of a morally dubious character, cos I think it adds texture (which the love interests HAVE to have for dating them to be interesting all the way through). It makes me wonder if his route will focus on how honest you and Ais can be with each other about the things that matter—or, perhaps, the consequences of that honesty.
And, now that I'm getting ready to post this: I wonder if each of the other characters' (including the DLC characters') has a recurring trait that can be so succinctly summarized, one that offers them texture simply by contrasting their baseline image? And if so, what are they, or what will they be? Interested to hear y'all's thoughts if you have any!

more aisposting [demo spoilers]
while he's VERY open about a lot of things (about the seaspring & himself—things related to the groupmind & Ocudeus, "i was lonely," "people get honest when they're afraid" + "I'll buy you a drink for scaring you") he is very emotionally distant/closed off ("i only have one friend" reports man surrounded by people who are friendly with him & hang out with him + "don't worry, you'll never have to talk about your feelings" uquiz result description).
In regards to him & Vere, he and Vere are close and he likes Vere ("friends with benefits, but got too attached") but doesn't trust him emotionally (see above "only one friend"). In contrast, Ais is "the only person Vere's shown his true face to"— meaning Vere trusts him highly. given this I would love to explore how their relationship could develop, in both good & bad ways.
here's where i devolve into a stream of thoughts:
•"dislikes: isolation" & gets lonely easily -> why he's got so many pets -> also BUDDY IT'S YOUR ATTACHMENT ISSUES
•something about Mr Thing-With-Loneliness being the local Groupmind Guy. "One big happy family all in your head" hmm
•something about Mr Thing with Loneliness and eye imagery. his pact buddy is EyeGod ON PURPOSE...... connection vs perceiving /being perceived... hmm.
•also minor sidenote hes got "only One Friend in his head" (he is not a part of the Big Happy Family groupmind & retains his individuality)..... i think abt his relation to the groupmind itself a lot. They seem to be aware of his location at any given time, but don't know very much about him? ("ais is a gang leader" says groupmind lady on the stairs VS "gang took a walk" quoth mr all alone now....)
•I personally feel that in that situation he's referring to his old gang —the one that is no longer with him— because his expression when he delivers the line is a fake smile. it appears cordial and masks discomfort or discontent, & i think whatever happened in his past is a loaded subject for him
•@ the bar scene he says "he got lonely" so he went to hang out with Vere and Leander specifically.. theyre his (relatively speaking.) best buds
•he enjoys Kuras's company but doesn't go to hang out with him when he's lonely, because he's aware of Kuras's emotional distancing methods (kuras also doesn't drink, which i think could be related to him potentially not needing food or drink / just not liking alcohol / refraining from drunken social activities)
•in my brain he's such a dog boy. relevant character traits i see in him as a result include loyalty (i feel that, whatever happened with his Old Gang, he didn't just up and leave them) and liking biting. thanks

my AIS headcannons
Has a collection of unique teacups, from the most simply designed ones to the most beautifully decorated cups to the finest of china
He even has a couple of funky, novelty inspired teacups in his possession
But no matter how interesting these teacups are, they’re all gonna be drank out of, one way or another
Similar to teacups, Ais also has a vast collection of tea flavors
For the 00000000.1% chance he has a guest that wants to just spend time with him and it’s someone he genuinely likes, Ais belives it’s important to have a variety of flavors that the guest can choose from. He actually wants to be a good host, you know
Ais has his tea preferences, though. His favorite flavor of tea are those that are spiced, such as chai and ginger tea
But let’s say you’re a special little Sparrow he loves driving up a wall: if you have a specific flavor of tea that you enjoy drinking, Ais would start drinking that flavor more and it would become his favorite because it reminds him of you
Ways Ais shows affection: he definitely does the Itachi/Sasuke forehead poke
He especially likes to catch you off guard when he forehead pokes you because you have NO idea what it means and find it annoying but that’s all the more reason for him to continue to do it
Another way Ais shows affection is forehead bumps - he likes to just gently bump his forehead against yours to get your attention; he even eggs you on to do it back to him
Ais knows sign language. When a desperate visitor seeking salvation arrived at the Seaspring communicating only with their hands one day, Ais decided to learn the language for himself. He’s gotten quite fluent in it actually
He even taught Princess, smart girl that she is, some sign language
Ais definitely does cuddle piles with Princess + his other Soulless pets. What can he say, he’s a lonely guy and he needs some affection every once and a while. Guess you can say he’s….touchstarved
Ais is kinda sentimental. You can say he’s bit of a hoarder too, with how he collects and keeps the strangest things he finds
The jewelry adorning his body are inherited from deceased members from his old gang, but he refuses to even think about that
Ais finds value in the damaged and broken things people toss away, such as the cracked and shattered teacups and teapots left abandoned in the wastelands, the strange trinkets and baubles he has discovered discarded in the bog waters, the destroyed articles of clothing brought to him by Princess and other Soulless, unique tokens loss upon the steps leading to the Seaspring
The yawning dark that’s in the back of the Seaspring is where he stores all these items in some type of gentle, protective nest; at first, Ais didn’t understand why he harvested these items that people no longer have use for, why he took so much care in persevering all these abandoned personal artifacts
But then Ais realized the reason he collected all these things because they’re remnants of someone’s previous life; their life before their tragic demise in the wastelands or before he helped them drink from the blood red waters of the Seaspring and solemnly guided them to the realm of insanity
Those people were forgotten and possibly never cared for while alive; but with Ais collecting all these items, he can validate that they existed in this cruel world and that they had worth; that they had mattered
