How Should I Get There, And How Long Should I Stay?

This is the first question we are often asked about Tanzania, so we thought we'd start with the answer. The most typical response we give?it depends. Arusha and Moshi are the most convenient major cities for visiting Kilimanjaro. Then and Now

Traveling is stressful and requires loads of patience.  Any seasoned traveler will attest to this.  Even the most detailed plans can go awry. Learning to accept that something will not go as expected, then adapting accordingly is the key to keeping one’s sanity. Maybe there are a few folks who actually like sitting in an airport surrounded by thousands of harried people, grumpy TSA agents processing long lines through security, but I am guessing that most of us would rather be anywhere else.  Airports specializes in a sort of commercialized impatience, designed to keep people moving.

I am experiencing a little impatience of my own right now. I am supposed to be in Kenya. The plan was for me to return in January 2021 as a follow-up of my 2020 visit with the Kenyan deaconesses of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya.  Obviously COVID altered many a plan, including my own. I am learning, along with the rest of the world, a new sort of patience.

Despite travel’s inconveniences, and there are many, I do love to travel. (or perhaps it is more accurate to say, I love being in other countries and cultures, but don’t enjoy the long flights and layovers), but it wasn’t always so.

In 1985, a year after we’d been married, my husband, Dennis and I embarked on a six-week trip to Europe. A sort of delayed honeymoon.  I had never traveled abroad, and truthfully had traveled very little period. But Europe! Who doesn’t want to travel to Europe?!  I was full of anticipation and excitement which came to an abrupt halt the moment we landed in Amsterdam on a wet, drizzly October morning.  I was jet-lagged, bedraggled and disoriented.  My ever-patient husband did his best to make things go smoothly, but I was like a fish out of water.  There are photos of me, in Amsterdam, at the Van Gogh Museum, standing next to a Van Gogh, Sunflowers, looking glum and tired. Eurail passes in hand, and backpacks strapped to our backs, we traveled from Amsterdam to Germany, where we met up with a high school friend who was living there, and I began to adapt.

 But once we hit Venice, a tsunami of homesickness washed over me. I couldn’t appreciate the beauty of this ancient city; all I could see were canals full of dirty water and trash. The smells and ever- present flocks pigeons didn’t help. I cried buckets of tears and if I could have gotten on a plane home, I would have. By the time we returned to California after six weeks of traveling, I could have kissed the ground. This is not to say that the trip wasn’t fabulous, it was, and I have many fond memories and can even laugh about my mishaps. However, I decided back then that I was more of a homebody than a traveler, and I told myself that for many years.  I realize now, I was simply not comfortable enough in my own skin to relax and let go. So, the mere fact that a year ago, I was traveling alone to Kenya with a long layover in Qatar, a middle eastern country, was really quite remarkable. Even more remarkable was that this was my eleventh trip to Kenya.

I have learned over these past fifteen years of traveling to Africa and other faraway places how to prepare.  I get organized. I do research. I make lists. I get prescribed medications to guard against malaria and other calamities, make sure my travel immunizations are up-to-date and, most importantly, I stock up on Hot Tamales and SweeTarts. For instance, in preparation for last year’s trip, I had carefully packed two huge suitcases full of water filters, medical supplies, books, and a few clothes.  I planned a curriculum for our deaconess seminars. I made sure my colleagues in Kenya had my itinerary and the list of items needed to be purchased in Kenya to make this trip a success. I checked my list once, then twice.

On a wintery January morning, my husband got a sub for his first-grade class and drove me to the Sacramento airport so I could catch the first of three flights to Kenya. The initial leg was a no brainer—a short jaunt to Los Angeles, then a shuttle to the LAX international terminal to wait for my next flight to Doha, Qatar.  (Qatar is on the Persian Gulf in eastern Arabia, north of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Even though it sits in the Middle East—an often-volatile area—it is generally a safe country).

In the LAX International terminal, I breezed my way through security, so happy that I’d gone to the trouble of getting Global Entry (sort of like a fast-track TSA Precheck for international travel).  My small backpack, the one item I was allowed as a carry-on, was crammed with items I thought I needed for the long flight—16 hours on this one leg alone.  I had my kindle, audio books, noise cancelling headphones, a change of clothing (I learned the hard way on one trip, that suitcases can get lost), gum, almonds and trail mix, lip balm, hand sanitizer, notebook, seminar notes, prayer chaplet, inflatable neck pillow and my trusty aluminum water bottle that has traveled with me across the world.  I was ready to settle in on what I thought would be a decent flight, given that the summer before, Dennis and I traveled Qatar airlines to and from Kenya and Barcelona, Spain and were delighted in the legroom, the service and the food. However, the moment I boarded this particular flight I could sense something was different.  The seats were crammed tightly together and there was little legroom. Envision shiny silver sardines packed tight in a little tin can.  The aisles were narrow. The plane was packed. The flight crew was harried.  I learned that Qatar had partnered with Sri Lanka airlines for this flight and the majority of people were headed to India. (No big deal, but this was NOT the Qatar I’d flown previously). The woman in front of me insisted on tilting her seat back ALL THE WAY, THE WHOLE FLIGHT, even after I kindly asked her to move it up a little. (As did the flight attendant). I almost broke down and cried for my mama.  Note to self—if the price of a flight looks too good to be true, it probably is.

It is located on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf and has a common history with that of the United Arab Emirates. History of Dubai The first human settlement in the city was in 3000 BC. It used to be a mangrove swamp that dried up attracting Bedouin cattle herders who started living there.  Their palm plantation in one of the fertile areas of the desert was the beginning of agriculture in Dubai and was the first step in transforming the nomadic nature of emiratis. In the 18th century, Dubai is thought to have been established as a fishing village. By 1822 it was a town of about 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe and was ruled by an Abu Dhabi Sheikh. This was necessary to develop the country in such a disadvantageous place as the desert. The discovery of oil, in the Fateh Oil Field in 1966, was a major milestone in the history of Dubai. The economic landscape improved and Dubai even created a new currency shared with Qatar, the Riyal.In 1969 Dubai made the first shipment of oil starting the expansion to what it is today. Dubai’s oil production peaked in 1991 at over 400.000 barrels per day, but has been steadily declining ever since.Of the Emirates, Abu Dhabi has most oil resources - 92 billion barrels, while Dubai has only 4 billion barrels. The Jebel Ali Free Zone has 52 square kilometers and it is the largest in the world.    Dubai became attractive for global businesses which today take advantage of the emirate’s 30 free zones that offer tax breaks, custom duty benefits and lack of restrictions for foreign owners. The industry of real estate and structure construction is one of the largest revenue-producing industries, contributing more than 22% of total revenue. The 163 stories building can be seen from 95 km away as it raises to a height of 828 meters. The construction effort was incredible as Burj Khalifa required 330.000 cubic meters of concrete, or about the weight of 100.000 elephants, and over 31.000 tons of steel rebar. The huge building sits on 192 concrete piles, which are each buried 50 meters in sand. It was very hot in Dubai when Burj Khalifa's concrete was poured, so it had to be done only at night and ice was added in the mix to cool it. It's construction meant the highest vertical concrete pumping ever done, at 606 meters. Even if the air conditioning system draws air from the upper floors, where the air is cooler, it still needs the equivalent of 12 million kilograms of melting ice each day. Condensation inside the building creates about half a million tons of water every year. Burj Khalifa has 57 lifts and the main elevators speed is 10 meters per second, reaching the 124th floor in about a minute. The elevator is holding the record for the longest travel distance in the world. It also holds records for the highest residential space and highest restaurant, Atmosphere.   The extreme temperatures in the desert implied the use of 174.000 square meters of glass that provides solar and thermal protection.The exterior temperature at the top of the building is at least 6 degrees Celsius cooler than at its base. It's so high that even on Ramadan, when Muslims need to wait for the sun to set for the celebration to end, people in the upper part need to wait up to 2 minutes more until the sun set.   The Burj Khalifa has the highest mosque in the world, on the 158th floor, the highest swimming pool, at the 76th floor, and the highest viewing platform, on the 124th floor. The Dubai Fountain is a choreographed fountain system located on the man-made Burj Khalifa Lake. The 275 m long fountain costed 218 million USD and it can shoot water up to 150 meters into the air. It is dispersing up to 83,000 liters of water at any moment. Illuminated by 6,600 lights and 50 colored projectors, The Dubai Fountain plays a range of classical to contemporary Arabic and worldwide known music. Burj al Arab One of the landmarks in Dubai is renowned in the entire world as being the most impressive and luxurious hotel: The Burj al Arab. The 321 meters high building stands on an artificial island made of sand. There are 230 concrete piles that hold the island, each of them being 40 meters buried in the sand beneath. The protection of the island is done by breaking up the waves using concrete cubes with a hexagonal-shaped hole in all 6 faces. Their defense is so good that the island could be built at just 7.5 meters above sea level. This allowed engineers to create the illusion of a boat on the water as the entire structure resembles the sail of a ship. Inside the building, it holds the largest atrium in the world, up to 180 meters tall. The outside temperature can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius while the interior is kept at about 23 degrees. The temperature difference creates a pressure difference between the inside and the outside. This would cause a collapse of the cold air column inside when the main ground door would be opened, so Burj Al Arab has a special revolving door that acts as an airlock. The extremely high temperatures can expand and contract the exterior trusses which provide stiffness by up to 5 cm in a day. Overcoming that many challenges makes this 70,000 cubic meters of concrete and 9.000 tons of steel building, a notable piece of engineering. The impressive SkyView Restaurant at 200 meters above sea level is projected 27 meters outside of the main exoskeleton but it can still withstand winds of up to 160 kilometers an hour. Real 24-carat gold leaf covers over 2.000 square meters of the interior surface. No wonder each guest receives a gold plated Ipad that acts as a remote control for the room as gold is everywhere in Burj Al Arab. Even in its Element 79 cocktail. 79 is the atomic number of gold and the name perfectly describes this sparkling grape drink with gold dust in it. But this is not the only gold edible at Burj Al Arab  as restaurants also have the recipe for the gold flakes decorated cappuccino. Almost 25,000 square meters of walls and flooring are covered with the rarest marble, Statuario. It is the kind used by Michelangelo to create his masterpieces.  The hotel has a shuttle service providing Rolls-Royces and a helicopter for pick-ups at the local airports. The cheapest room will require about $2,700 per night while The Royal Suite is billed at US$24,000 per night. Dubai Mall  Dubai Mall is the second-largest mall in the world by land area and it is for sure the dream place for anyone passionate about shopping. It's not just a place to go and shop but it's an entire city that provides extraordinary means for entertainment. It's store surface of over 1.2 million square meters is equivalent to more than 50 football fields. Dubai Mall includes over 1300 shops that attracted over 84 million visitors in 2019. It features The Waterfall - a 24 meters high structure that allows water to cascade through all four levels passing art sculptures of human divers.   The 4 story structure of the mall near Burj Khalifa used more than 13,000 tons of structural steel, or around twice the amount utilized in the Eiffel Tower. Fossil of Diplodocus Longus - gulftoday.ae A 155-million-year-old fossil of Diplodocus Longus - famously known as the ‘Dubai Dino’ is permanently on display in the Dubai Mall.   The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo found within the mall area showcases more than 300 species of marine animals, including sharks and rays. The aquarium is a 51-meter long, 11-meter high, 20-meter wide, and 10-million liter tank that includes a 270-degree walkthrough tunnel for the ultimate marine life experience.  The aquarium holds the World’s record for the largest acrylic panel, weighing 245 tons. Dubai Islands  Dubai's beachfront was not enough for the city, so the government owned companies built 4 artificial islands:  Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island, Palm Jebel Ali and The World. Currently, only Palm Jumeirah has been completed and inhabited. The islands have increased the shoreline length with 520 kilometers, creating space for 1,500 beachfront mansions and 6,000 apartments. This is the world's largest man-made island being visible from the space and the artificial archipelago is considered to be the eighth wonder of the world. The artificial islands of Dubai as designed- Wikipedia Constructing Dubai’s Palm Island required 94 million cubic meters of sand, therefore it used enough sand to fill 2.5 Empire State Buildings. Local quarries provided about 5.5 million cubic meters of rock which creates the islands breakwaters. No Concrete or steel was used for this mega-structure. The amount of rock and sand used here could form a 2 meter wide wall that would circle the globe three times! Safety comes first so the breakwater can withstand a 4 meters tidal wave. The Atlantis Hotel was built at one of the islands ends and it is connected with the mainland via an impressive monorail system stretching on 5.4 kilometers. An alternative 6-lane underground tunnel was built to reach Palm Jumeirah. Palm Jebel Ali island is 50% larger than Palm Jumeirah and will house more than 250.000 people on it. It will even feature homes built on stilts above the water and boardwalks that seen from the outer space will spell out an Arabic poem. The project has been stalling since the 2008 financial crisis but the developer remains committed to building it. Deira Island is another ongoing development which was initially designed to be eight times larger than Palm Jumeriah. It will host the biggest night market in the world, Deira Night souk. Its structure is made of a 93 meters bridge connecting the two 150 meters towers. The top Sky-deck is built as an opaque glass bridge crafted as a liquid crystal film, making the glass clear when visitors walk on it. Thai AirAsia to Resume Domestic Flights on 1 May 2020

Thai AirAsia (FD) is to resume domestic operations on 1 May 2020. The airline plans to initially operate the following routes: Don Mueang to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Panom, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Roi-Et, Surat Thani, Trang, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, as well as Chiang Mai - Hat Yai. Crew and passengers will need to abide by strict health controls in compliance with regulations set by the Ministry of Public Health and Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. Measures include include:

- The airline will only sell a limited number of seats on every flight in accordance with social distancing measures. - Social distancing will also be enforced on the shuttle bus as well as at the service counters. - Passengers will be required to wear their own face masks throughout their journey including during check-in and baggage claim. - Strictly no consumption of food and beverage onboard. AirAsia’s meals service has also be temporarily suspended. - Passengers are to be screened in accordance with airport regulations, including a body temperature scan during boarding. Passengers with a body temperature above 37.3 Celsius, or exhibiting symptoms including sneezing or coughing, will be denied travel. - Only one bag such as a laptop bag or a ladies’ handbag or a small bag weighing no more than 5 kilograms will be permitted as carry-on baggage per person. The size must not exceed the dimension of 40cm (H) x 30cm (W) X 10 cm (D) and fit under the seat in front of the passenger. For other additional baggage within allowed 7 kilograms will be checked-in at no additional cost. The reason for this is to try and facilitate social distancing especially during embarkation and disembarkation. - Guests are recommended to perform self check-in via the AirAsia mobile app or kiosks at the airport to reduce personal contact. In addition, the cabin crew and other operational staff performing duties on the flight will have  their body temperature checked before and after duty. They must also wear PPE such as masks, goggles and gloves throughout service. AirAsia will disinfect its airplanes, shuttle buses, service counters and check-in kiosks on a daily basis. Air Force crews have stayed overnight at President Donald Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland on at least four occasions, two more than previously reported.

The four trips — uncovered through interviews with people present, records of expenditures and social media postings — date back to at least September 2018 and continued through at least this past June. They include at least one instance in which a crew member said a nearby airport arranged for rides and lunches to and from the luxury waterside retreat. All the flights were shuttling crews between the United States and the Middle East, and at least three of them of them were divisions of the Air National Guard. In total, over 60 service members stayed at the posh property on these stopovers.

Now, with Congress returning from an extended August break, Democrats want to make sure these Air Force crews never again stay at Trump Turnberry. On Monday, lawmakers began stumping for the Senate to adopt an amendment that would bar the Pentagon from spending money at nearly five dozen Trump properties worldwide. The House passed the clause in July as part of the broader annual defense policy bill, but it has not yet been adopted into law.

“As alarming details emerge about U.S. Air Force crews staying at the president’s luxury golf resort in Scotland, it has become even more important that Congress include this language in the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), one of the sponsors of the proposal.

The push to outlaw the practice will join a growing list of conflict-of-interest concerns that Democrats want to highlight in the coming months as House leaders decide whether to begin formal impeachment proceedings against the president. The overnight stops at Turnberry have already sparked a broader House Oversight Committee investigation of military spending at and around Trump properties. The Air Force over the weekend also launched a worldwide review of how it chooses lodging on overnight layovers. A legislative battle could be next.

“The president has already shown a willingness to violate the Constitution’s emoluments clause, and Congress has a duty to use every tool we can to stop him,” Beyer said, referring to the provision that prohibits the president from receiving any compensation from the federal government other than a salary.

The Air Force has said the stops are within Pentagon guidelines and noted that the Turnberry bookings fall within acceptable rates for military travel. But the service also conceded that the appearance of staying at the president’s property might create a negative perception.

Trump, for his part, proclaimed no knowledge of the stays in a Monday morning tweet.

“I know nothing about an Air Force plane landing at an airport (which I do not own and have nothing to do with) near Turnberry Resort (which I do own) in Scotland, and filling up with fuel, with the crew staying overnight at Turnberry (they have good taste!). NOTHING TO DO WITH ME,” he wrote.

The Air Force stays at Turnberry date back to at least September 2018.

That month, a unit of the Maine Air National Guard landed at Prestwick Airport — stationed about 20 miles from Turnberry — on its way back to the U.S. from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The crew — members of the 101st Air Refueling Wing — and their passengers then spent the night at Trump’s hotel, according to one person who was present and a voucher detailing the crew’s itinerary reviewed by POLITICO.

In total, at least a dozen Air Force members stayed at Turnberry that night, this person recalled.

What was “also odd,” the person said, was that Prestwick Airport went above and beyond for the service members — the airport booked the rooms at Turnberry, coordinated free rides to and from the resort, and even packed the crew lunches for the day they departed.

A spokesman for the airport did not dispute that recollection.

“Like all airports, we provide a full handling service for customers and routinely arrange overnight accommodation for visiting aircrew when requested,” the spokesman told POLITICO. “We use over a dozen local hotels, including Trump Turnberry, which accounts for a small percentage of the total hotel bookings we make.”

The spokesman further noted that the airport does not pay for crew accommodation and takes no commission from Turnberry for any bookings they make on behalf of the Air Force. He denied offering air crews free rounds of golf at the resort, rebutting aspects of a Guardianreportfrom early 2018.

The stays didn’t end there.

Also in September 2018, the Iowa Air National Guard, en route back to the U.S. from an official visit to Kosovo in a KC-135 plane, stopped to refuel in Scotland, according to a person familiar with the matter and a spokesperson for the Iowa National Guard.

The 185th air refueling wing out of Sioux City, Iowa, which was making the trip, had about 35 to 40 soldiers and airmen that needed lodging, and they ultimately stayed at Turnberry. According to the spokesperson, the crew doubled up in rooms and were provided transportation to and from Prestwick.

The Prestwick stop was due to fuel “limitations” on the flight out of Kosovo, the spokesperson said. And the overnight stay at Turnberry was arranged through the Defense Travel System — essentially the Pentagon’s in-house travel agent — and “directed by a higher echelon … based on mission and operational requirements.”

Then, in March of this year, the 176th maintenance squadron — an Air National Guard unit based in Alaska — lodged at Trump’s Turnberry resort en route to Kuwait to deliver supplies. That stopover was the initial revelation of the practice, which POLITICO firstreportedon Friday.

Finally, in late June of this year, an aircrew and its passengers en route to Iraq arrived at Turnberry by the busload, according to a person who was there and an Instagram post by an Air Force crew member.

The Air Force said it could not immediately confirm the additional Turnberry stops or why the accommodations were selected over other potential lodging in the area. But it noted over the weekend that the March Turnberry stop fell within Pentagon guidelines, with comparable or cheaper rates than other nearby hotels. Still, the Air Force review of these choices will assess the “guidance associated with the use of civil airports and lodging selection for aircrew at en route locations,” according to a formal memo issued Monday.

The memo sets out a 30-day timeline to offer “recommendations for any proposed adjustments and process changes.”

If the Democrats have their way, though, the Pentagon may not even have the choice to stay at Trump properties in the future.

Theprovisionthat the House adopted in July would block the Pentagon from spending money at 57 specific Trump properties. Under the provision, Trump could waive the ban if he reimburses the Treasury Department for the expenses.

The language, which passed by a 223-205 vote, was included in the House’s version of the National Defense Authorization Act.

The Democratic leaders of the House Armed Services Committee and their Republican counterparts in the Senate are aiming to hammer out a compromise defense bill later this month. It’s unclear whether the language will make it into the final bill, although Republicans have blasted the proposal as impractical and a partisan stunt meant to embarrass Trump.

House Armed Services Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) said the revelations bolster Democrats’ argument headed into negotiations with the Senate.

“It’s difficult because we try to put in accountability measures, and every time we do it, the Republicans just scream that we just hate Trump,” Smith said in an interview. “That’s not the point. The point is that ethics matter within government.”

The stays at Turnberry come as the Air Forces use of Prestwick has steadily grown in recent years. Stops at the facility have nearly tripled since 2015, and overnights in the area have increased more than fivefold in that same time, the Air Force said on Sunday.

From 2015 to 2019, they said, Air Mobility Command aircraft stopped at the civil airport 936 times. Of those, crews stayed overnight in the area 659 times. The service has not said how many of those overnight stays were at Turnberry.

The frequency of both stops at Prestwick and overnight stays in the area have increased each year since 2015. Through August of this year, the Air Force had stopped 259 times at Prestwick, and lodged around the airport 220 times.
