We’ll Always Have Cuba
Pairing: Sierra Six/Courtland Gentry x Reader
Fandom: The Gray Man (Netflix)
Summary: After the events of The Gray Man, Claire and Six run off to Cuba because it doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the USA. There, they meet you. You are staying in the same apartment building as them for the summer. Over that summer, Six falls for you.
Warnings: None that I can think of, I skip over the smut

    “You’re staring again.”
Claire’s voice snapped Six out of the trance he was in as he gazed out the living room window. “Am not,” he childishly defended.
“Are too.” Claire plopped down on the couch with her newest record folder in her lap. It was currently playing. Claire’s eyes scanned the words of the folder. “Is Y/n home?”
Six turned away from the window. He glanced at the young girl as he headed for the front door. “Maybe,” he vaguely informed.
“You’re a stalker!” she called after him as the door shut.
He was far from that, he thought as he descended the stairs of the five-story apartment building. To be a stalker, one must follow a person places, and Six hadn’t done that in a couple months.
Yes, he knew that sounded bad, but he was only checking to make sure you hadn’t been sent by the CIA to hurt him or Claire. His mental alarms were set off when you didn’t bat an eye at his code name, which Claire had presented to you as his real name. You just kept the same sweet (and beautiful) smile on your face and thanked them for welcoming you to the building.
Six tried not to trust you after that. He followed you to stores and to the beach, looking for any sign that you weren’t the kind, gentle, and loving person that Six came to know you to be. He found nothing to contest what his instincts were saying about you. So, Six stopped following you, and consigned to only keeping a close eye on you while you were at the apartment building. Maybe too close an eye for what you warranted.
“Oh, you’re a life-saver,” you smiled at Six as he started to help you with your bags. “One thing I won’t miss about this place: the five-floor walk-up.”
He smirked at you. “It’s not so bad when you’ve got someone to talk to. That’s why I’m here.”
You tried to hide a smile from Six, and that made his heart skip a beat. Because of that, the bags he was carrying seemed light as air.
“You know, this was my last grocery trip here,” you pointed out as you and Six walked into the apartment you were staying at.
Six’s brow furrowed when he felt his heart drop slightly. “You’re leaving at the end of next week, right?”
“Yep.” You put the milk away, and opened the next bag. “I think the owner of this place told me that I’ve been at this Airbnb the longest out of his customer. A whole summer...And I really want to thank you and Claire for helping me feel more at home.”
“No problem.” Six glanced at the ground to hide the sincerity behind his words. “Well, if that’s all you need...”
Your eyes grew wide. “Oh! Yeah, you can go. I’ve got it from here. Thank you again!”
“No problem,” Six repeated under his breath. He felt he needed to get out of there, or else he would end up saying something he would regret.
    “Hey, Six?”
He turned around at the sound of your voice just in time to duck his head out of the way of a box. Of course, Six caught it. He read the English words on the box.
    Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum
    Six smiled.
“I, um...found that at the store for you...I hope you like--”
“I love it,” he interrupted you to say. “Thank you.”
That put a smile on your face as well.
Six popped one of the pieces into his mouth, and exited your apartment.
“You’ve got it bad...” Claire teased as soon as Six came back into their living quarters.
He snapped his fingers and pointed at her, “No, I don’t,” before moving to the kitchen to put away the gum.
“Oh really? Then what’s that?” Claire leaned over the back of the couch as she referenced the present you had gotten Six.
“None of your business,” Six warned with no real malice.
Claire rolled her eyes. “Come on, Six. That’s just proof they’ve got it bad for you too. Why don’t you do something about it?”
Six leaned on the counter and sighed. “You know why I can’t.”
“Why? Because they’re leaving? That’s more of a reason to take the jump now, before you never see them again. And who knows, maybe they’ll--”
“Not with the life we lead, Claire,” reminded Six.
At that, Claire just shook her head. “You can’t let that hold you back forever, especially from stuff like this.”
“Somewhere between getting kidnapped and running away to Cuba,” she shrugged.
Six stood at the counter, contemplating for a moment more. Then, he figured he should go now before he talks himself out of it. Six marched toward the door, and yanked it open.
    And there you were.
Both you and Six were shocked into silence.
You were the first to speak. “Um, I know I have a couple weeks left, but I was wondering if you and Claire would like to come over for dinner, so I can properly thank you for all you’ve done for me.”
Before Six said anything in return, Claire was off the couch and heading for her room. She gave a fake yawn. “I’m actually pretty tired. I think I’ll head to bed early tonight. You two kids have fun, though!” Her bedroom door shut behind her.
“What was that about?” you said over a laugh.
“Trust me, you don’t want to know,” Six smiled, hiding his embarrassed. “You sure you want to make dinner?”
You answered as if it were obvious. “Of course I’m sure. Plus, I’m going to miss you-guys,” you clarified. “Why not start the goodbye now?”
Six could feel his heart clench in his chest, but he hid it well. He closed his front door behind him, and followed you to your apartment.
A couple of hours later, Six couldn’t remember ever being as relaxed as he was right then. There was just something about you that put him at ease.
“What are you thinking about?” you asked as you sat down next to him on the sofa, two refilled glasses of wine in hand.
Six couldn’t find it within himself to lie to you. “You,” he answered sincerely.
You blinking, obviously taken off guard by the response. You tried to hide your nervousness. “What about me?”
He smiled as he elaborated, “You brought me here to thank me, but I’m pretty sure I should be thanking you.”
    “For what?”
“For being you.” Six informed, “You showed me...that life can be normal.”
“Can you tell me what you mean by that?”
Six hesitated. “My life, my whole life...has always been...less than normal.”
You smiled, “I know, Six. I’ve always known when it comes to you.”
That threw him off guard. It even scared him a little. “What do you mean?”
“Well, I can’t guess the details, but I always figured you and Claire have lead less than easy lives. It’s in how you carry yourselves, and how you treat each other. I mean, come on, your name is Six.”
He chuckled. His worries were somehow put at ease by you somewhat understanding his past.
“I’ve lived a life, too,” you admitted, “Let’s just say there’s a reason behind why I ran away to Cuba for a summer.”
Six’s interest was peaked, but he wasn’t going to ask about it if you didn’t want to know about his past for the moment.
You took a drawn-out sip of your wine. “I really don’t want to go back. This summer has just been so amazing. Plus, there’s you and Claire.”
A part of Six wanted to ask what else was keeping you from going back, but he surprised both you and himself by what he said next. “Stay.”
Your brow furrowed a little as your soft voice questioned, “What?”
Six put his glass down on the coffee table. “Stay with me, with Claire.” He took your glass from you and put it next to his Six took your hands in his. “Please, sweetheart. I don’t want you to go.”
“Where is this coming from?” came your worried question.
“It’s coming from what I’ve felt since the moment I laid eyes on you. I’m sorry, I just can’t keep this inside anymore--mmhh.”
You had cut him off with a kiss.
Six relaxed against you, but he tensed up again when a thought crossed his mind. He broke the kiss. “I’ve killed people.” He bluntly stated. He couldn’t let the night go on without you knowing.
    “I know.”
He realized you had guessed as much as you caressed his face between your hands.
“That don’t change anything for me.” You pulled him in to kiss you again, and this time, Six accepted it wholeheartedly.
Hours later, you and Six were curled up in your bed together, with you in his arms.
He kissed the top of your head. “You know, my real name is Courtland Gentry. Court.”
You smiled, “That’s a nice name.”
He went on. “I actually prefer Six.”
    “Why’s that?”
He shrugged. “Because, for the longest time, it was tied to my purpose in life, the CIA. The name Six helps me kill bad guys and help good guys. And it doesn’t help that my abusive dad gave me the name Court.”
“But?” You had guessed correctly that that word was coming.
He smiled, “But...I don’t know. I’m not a part of the CIA anymore, my dad’s long dead, and I got a new purpose in life now.”
    “Taking care of Claire?”
“And you, if you’ll let me.”
You bit your lip and nodded, cuddling closer to him. “I think I like Court. Courtland Gentry.” You tested the name out.
Court smirked. “I definitely liked the way you said that.” He put a hand on your cheek and guided you back to his lips.

Went to the private hospital, put it on my CC 😬 Future Jovanna has paperwork to do.
But today Jovanna is being immediately seen in an empty hospital right next to my apartment (with a clean bathroom). Less than 10 minutes after walking in and they are already testing my pee 🙌🏽
Less than 5 mins after them taking my pee, doctor is ready to see me. Funnily enough, he asks me where I’m from (in Spanish) and I say “Miami” and he exclaims, “Ah! Una Cubana! Yo soy de Cuba también (I’m from Cuba, too).
We ere chatting and he’s like, “No offense, but I don’t like your city. It’s just go go go!! everyone is stressed out.”
I was like, “i don’t like my city either” 😭 and when I told him I was in Spain to decide if we wanted to move here, he was like DO IT 🤣 “Life here in Spain is to be enjoyed. Over there, life is to spend working.”
Then he gave me my RX and I was like… he’s right. This country is so much more ALIVE and the people are living not just hating life and surviving.
I could’ve gone to a public hospital and received free healthcare. There isn’t an Organic food section that only the rich + privileged can afford, because none of their food is poisoned by billionaires that want us to get sick so they can profit even more off of us.
Older people are healthier because people actually walk around town for most of their errands rather than getting everything delivered. There are no Amazon trucks that sound like dying birds when they back out of a driveway.
My antibiotics were 2.30 euro, without insurance. My groceries are 1/3 of the price I spend in America. The kids / parents are nicer overall and actually talk to one another. The rents on Airbnb in BEAUTIFUL cities like Alicante or just outside of Barcelona are cheaper than anything I’ve seen in America for the quality + location.
I could afford to send my daughter to a wonderful private school here.
Im just … I’m so torn. I feel like if I move here, within 10 years I can get my mom / brother to follow me. But fuckkkkk to be apart from both of our families 😢

Oh my goodness, what a great day! We walked 13.5 kms by 3 pm. We started the day with my old Kingston friend Alain who actually lives in BC but was also here visiting family. We had a lovely breakfast reminiscing about Kingston and Queens. Then, we headed out to see campus, to the Southwest. We even got a shot of me in the ol’library like old times lol. We walked back along the water to get some gelato (chocolate mint, lemon and strawberry for me) at Mio Gelato and then headed to the Northeast, across the bridge to see the Royal Military College. A lot of zigzagging through their grounds brought us within sight (my first time ever!) of Fort Henry. Boy did I not do touristy things when I lived here lol. Anyway, back we came to Kingston proper and then we walked way North to Skeleton Park (which we learned more about then I ever knew on our ghost tour) and saw my old church that I worked at. Got to get caught up on a bit of the changes in the last 18 years! Lovely. Then, back to downtown where we had an epic meal at Whiskey & Rose, a gluten free Southern themed restaurant. So so so good. At some point, we also went hat hunting as I left mine on the train getting here. We now have matching hats!
We then had a wonderful coffee catch up with my friend Lesley who was such a big part of my time in Kingston. Plus: gluten free vegan carrot cake and a maple oat milk latte. It’s heaven here!
So, completely exhausted and with the proverbial dogs a barkin’, we napped some. Then, we hit up a lovely Italian restaurant right outside our Airbnb on Market Square. I was stuffed already (that carrot cake slice was ginormous) but Gaelan enjoyed a wonderful two course Italian feast and we got to enjoy the local colour. Kingston folk are fun!
We are now going to hope that sleep cures our very sore legs and my sunburned chest as tomorrow is a busy day that ends with us in Toronto setting an alarm for 2:30 am to get to the airport for Cuba.

Expect big crowds for the summer travel season—and big prices, too (AP) The unofficial start of the summer travel season is here. The number of people going through U.S. airports hit pandemic-era highs last weekend, and those records are almost certain to be broken over the Memorial Day holiday. AAA predicts that 37 million Americans will drive at least 50 miles (80 kilometers) from home this weekend, an increase of more than 2 million from Memorial Day last year. With more travel comes more expense. The average rate for a U.S. hotel room last week was $157 a night, up from $150 in the same week last year, according to hotel data provider STR. And the average daily rate for other short-term rentals such as Airbnb and Vrbo rose to $316 last month, up 1.4% from a year ago, according to AirDNA, which tracks the industry.
DeSantis Declares (1440) Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) made his long-anticipated jump into the 2024 presidential race yesterday, making the announcement in a livestreamed conversation with Twitter CEO Elon Musk. DeSantis has positioned his campaign as focused on conservative populism with an emphasis on effective governing and joins a field of seven other candidates seeking the Republican nomination.
ChatGPT maker OpenAI calls for AI regulation, warning of ‘existential risk’ (Washington Post) The leaders of OpenAI, the creator of viral chatbot ChatGPT, are calling for the regulation of “superintelligence” and artificial intelligence systems, suggesting an equivalent to the world’s nuclear watchdog would help reduce the “existential risk” posed by the technology. In a statement published on the company website this week, co-founders Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, as well as CEO Sam Altman, argued that an international regulator would eventually become necessary to “inspect systems, require audits, test for compliance with safety standards, (and) place restrictions on degrees of deployment and levels of security.” They made a comparison with nuclear energy as another example of a technology with the “possibility of existential risk,” raising the need for an authority similar in nature to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the world’s nuclear watchdog. The OpenAI team wrote, “In terms of both potential upsides and downsides, superintelligence will be more powerful than other technologies humanity has had to contend with in the past. We can have a dramatically more prosperous future; but we have to manage risk to get there.”
Fuel shortages slam Cuba’s countryside (AP) Rosa López, a 59-year-old housewife, lit a charcoal stove to boil sweet potatoes and prepare scrambled eggs for her grandchildren. The gas cylinders she normally uses to cook her meals have not been available for almost two months in Mariel, a port town west of Havana. Not far from there, on the highway to Pinar del Río and under a scorching sun, Ramón Victores spent one week waiting in line at a gas station, hoping to fuel up the 1952 red Chevrolet he uses for work, moving produce from one town to another. Cuba’s most recent fuel shortage has crippled an already fragile economy, but it is hitting rural villages particularly hard, with residents resorting to coal fires to cook their food, scrambling to find transport to take them to work and spending days—and nights—at the gas station waiting to fuel up. With food and medications already in short supply amid an economy that was severely hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic, the end of the country’s two-currency system and a tightening of U.S. sanctions, the lack of fuel and cooking gas is perceived by many Cubans in the island’s countryside as the last straw.
As Protesters Die, a Nation’s Security Forces Face Little Scrutiny (NYT) In the adobe house she built with her husband in a small village in Peru, Antonia Huillca pulled out a stack of documents that once represented a glimmer of hope. They were part of an investigation into the death of her husband, Quintino Cereceda, who left one morning in 2016 to join a protest against a new copper mine and never returned. Ms. Huillca can’t read, but she can identify a photo of her husband’s body, a bullet wound to his forehead; the question-and-answer format in which police officers describe firing live ammunition as protesters threw rocks; the logo of the mining company sending convoys of trucks over unpaved roads, sparking protests among villagers fed up with the dust. But today, the investigation has gone cold. “All these years and no justice,” Ms. Huillca, a 51-year-old Quechua farmer, said. “It’s as if we don’t exist.” For years, scores of similar cases in Peru have met a familiar fate: Investigations into the killing of unarmed civilians at protests where security forces were deployed, most of them in poor Indigenous and rural areas, are opened when they attract headlines, only to be closed quietly later, with officials often citing a lack of evidence. Now, the unusually high death toll during antigovernment demonstrations after the removal of the country’s president last year has put accusations of abuse by security officials in the global spotlight, raising questions about why so many previous killings remain unsolved.
Immigration to Britain reaches record high in 2022 (AP) The number of people moving to Britain reached a record high of more than 600,000 in 2022, government figures showed Thursday. The statistics office said the record level was due to a “series of unprecedented world events throughout 2022 and the lifting of restrictions following the coronavirus pandemic.” As well as people coming to Britain to work, the figure includes tens of thousands of international students and almost 200,000 people who have arrived under special programs for people fleeing war in Ukraine and China’s clampdown in Hong Kong. The high figure will renew debate about Britain’s departure from the European Union, which was motivated in part by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of people from across Europe in the years before the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Europe Faces a Food Shock (WSJ) Fresh out of an energy crisis, Europeans are facing a food-price explosion that is changing diets and forcing consumers across the region to tighten their belts—literally. This is happening even though inflation as a whole is falling thanks to lower energy prices. New data on Wednesday showed inflation in the U.K. fell sharply in April as energy prices cooled, following a similar pattern around Europe and in the U.S. But food prices were 19.3% higher than a year earlier. The continued surge in food prices has caught central bankers off guard and pressured governments to come to the rescue.
Prigozhin’s warning (Washington Post) Fresh off his claim of victory in capturing the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Russian mercenary boss Yevgeniy Prigozhin warned that Moscow’s brutal war could plunge Russia into turmoil similar to the 1917 revolution unless its detached, wealthy elite become more directly committed to the conflict. In a lengthy interview with Konstantin Dolgov, a political operative and pro-war blogger, Prigozhin, the founder and leader of the Wagner mercenary group, also asserted that the war had backfired spectacularly by failing to “demilitarize” Ukraine, one of President Vladimir Putin’s stated aims of the invasion. He also called for totalitarian policies. “We are in a situation where we can simply lose Russia,” Prigozhin said, using an expletive to hammer his point. “We must introduce martial law. We unfortunately … must announce new waves of mobilization; we must put everyone who is capable to work on increasing the production of ammunition,” he said. “Russia needs to live like North Korea for a few years, so to say, close the borders … and work hard.” Instead of demilitarization, he said, the invasion turned “Ukraine’s army into one of the most powerful in the world” and Ukrainians into “a nation known to the entire world.”
Turkish voters weigh final decision on next president (AP) Two opposing visions for Turkey’s future are on the ballot when voters return to the polls Sunday for a runoff presidential election that will decide between an increasingly authoritarian incumbent and a challenger who has pledged to restore democracy. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a populist and polarizing leader who has ruled Turkey for 20 years, is well positioned to win after falling just short of victory in the first round of balloting on May 14. He was the top finisher even as the country reels from sky-high inflation and the effects of a devastating earthquake in February. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of Turkey’s pro-secular main opposition party and a six-party alliance, has campaigned on a promise to undo Erdogan’s authoritarian tilt. The 74-year-old former bureaucrat has described the runoff as a referendum on the direction of the strategically located NATO country, which is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and has a key say over the alliance’s expansion. “This is an existential struggle. Turkey will either be dragged into darkness or light,” Kilicdaroglu said. “This is more than an election. It has turned into a referendum.”
Beijing can’t take a joke (Foreign Policy) A Chinese comedian’s mild joke about the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) last week led to a $1.9 million fine for his entertainment company. Li Haoshi, a stand-up comedian known as “House” onstage, joked that watching his dogs chase a squirrel reminded him of the PLA slogan “Fight to win!” Beijing authorities intervened after audio was shared on social media, fining the company that represents Li and confiscating the profits of weekend shows. Li is now under investigation for insulting the PLA and causing “bad social impact.” Around the same time, China suspended the Weibo and Bilibili accounts of a popular British Malaysian comedian after he made a joke about Chinese surveillance. One of the reasons that Chinese censorship has become so petty is that years of crackdowns under Xi quashed most dissident content years ago. The authorities must now go after the inconsequential to justify their own existence.
South Korea, US troops to hold massive live-fire drills near border with North Korea (AP) The South Korean and U.S. militaries were set to begin massive live-fire drills near the border with North Korea on Thursday, despite the North’s warning that it won’t tolerate what it calls such a hostile invasion rehearsal on its doorstep. Thursday’s drills, the first of the allies’ five rounds of firing exercises until mid-June, mark 70 years since the establishment of the military alliance between Seoul and Washington. North Korea has typically reacted to such major South Korean-U.S. exercises with missile and other weapons tests. Since the start of 2022, North Korea has test-launched more than 100 missiles but none since it fired a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile in mid-April. North Korea has argued its torrid pace of tests was meant to respond to the expanded military drills between the U.S. and South Korea, but observers say the North aims to advance its weapons development then wrest greater concessions from its rivals in eventual diplomacy.
What about those who can’t flee fighting in Sudan? (AP) Mahmoud almost never leaves his small apartment in east Khartoum. Electricity has been out for most of the past month, so he swelters in the summer heat. When he does venture out to find food, he leaves his mobile phone behind because of looters in the street. Otherwise, he hunkers down in fear, worried that an artillery shell could burst into his home. Since the conflict broke out last month, more than 1.3 million people have fled their homes to escape Sudan’s fighting, going elsewhere in the country or across the borders. But Mahmoud and millions of others remain trapped in Khartoum and its sister cities of Bahri and Omdurman, unable to leave the central battleground between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary. For them, every day is a struggle to find food, get water and charge their phones when electricity is cut off. All the while, they must avoid the fighters and criminals in the streets who rob and brutalize pedestrians, loot shops and storm into homes to steal whatever of value they can find.
Paralysis Breakthrough (1440) Swiss neuroscientists have successfully utilized a brain-spine interface to enable a paralyzed man to walk using his thoughts, according to a study released yesterday. The breakthrough development expands on recent innovations using spinal implants to generate movement in patients with immobilizing spinal injuries. Gert-Jan Oskam, a Dutch 40-year-old who was paralyzed 12 years ago, received two brain implants and one on his spine, creating a so-called “digital bridge” across the injured nerves. A portable computer decodes his brain’s electrical signals and relays them to a spinal pulse generator, resulting in the perception that his lower body movements are voluntary. Combined with regular therapy, the procedure allows Oskam to walk and climb stairs with a natural gait aided by a walker, at times without the digital bridge activated. The procedure further opens the possibility for victims of paralysis to regain control of their legs, with researchers hoping to reduce the size and invasiveness of the implants.

Back from six days in Cuba. Two nights in Playa Larga, one night at Habana Libre (national hotel) in Havana and two nights at a Casa Particular (we found on Airbnb) near the Revolution Museum (great location). Travel was hard even with the Cubacel SIM card. Hard to find a food outside of swanky restaurants, hard to walk around in the heat with a 5-yo, hard to maintain patience with spouse.
Got home late-ish last night. Back in the office today. Husband stayed home and kept baby-child too. Husband thinks he has the flu.

Day one of the Journey. All packed up...taking 100 dollars in US dollars from my dad for emergency money.....I came up to take $250 and changed my mind...still have not figured out why I changed my mind on that issue.....
It was greatest thing ever that the restaurant had food in the morning....I would never been able to survive....,
Hence the front desk motto...Alahabana Airbnb in Cuba.
