OC INFORMATION: YUKINA KURIMOTO
Tumblr media
*art credited to nocnoc_art @ instagram*
Name: Yukina Kurimoto (栗本 雪奈) Birthplace: Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan Nationality: Japanese Birthday: October 24th (Scorpio)
PHYSICAL FEATURES Age: 17 (WMS Arc 1) | 18 (WMS Arc 2) | 18 - 19 (WMS Arc 3) Height: 158cm (start of Arc 1) | 160cm (end of Arc 3) Weight: 47kg Hair Color: Dark Brown / Black Eye Color: Medium Brown
GENERAL INFORMATION Family: Tatsuya Kurimoto (father, deceased), Akane Matsuda (mother, deceased) Unnamed Paternal Grandparents Emiko Matsuda (maternal grandmother) Daisuke Kurimoto (uncle)
Fighting Style: Aikido (Arc 1) | Aikido, Kobudo (Arcs 2 + 3) Weapon: Dual Sai
Personality: Quiet and reserved by nature, she carries a somewhat mysterious aura around her. While being from the Kansai region, she speaks with a formal dialect and has an extremely subtle accent.
Despite her soft demeanor, she's far from a pushover. She'll protect those she loves by putting herself on the line, even in a compromising position. She's also willing to bend the rules on occasion and can be surprisingly stubborn, which is more apparent in close relationships.
While she appears distant at times, it's merely a defense mechanism to keep herself at arm's length. Her innermost desire is to make everlasting bonds, but certain memories make her hesitant; all it would take is for her to meet the right people to set her free.
HISTORY: A high school student living in Kyoto, Yukina trains alongside her uncle to become a full fledged aikidoka.
Originally approached by her friend Izumi to enter the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, she declined due to a personal hiatus.
One night, she dreams of a young man turning into a monster and plunging the world into darkness. Unsure of where this came from, she wakes up to discover that Heihachi Mishima, the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu, has suddenly passed away.
Over the next few weeks, her dreams slowly repeat in a constant loop. Getting a bad feeling from these visions, she learns that the Mishima Zaibatsu is hosting a new tournament. Hardening her resolve, she enters the competition to prevent this dark future from happening.
While her first round in the competition is a success, her second round is interrupted by visions of two young men fighting against one another. It's there that she sees him: the young man from her dreams morphing into noting short of a demon and nearly decimating his opponent.
Consumed by this vision, she suddenly feels her entire body grow hot. The next thing she knows, she's relocated to an unknown area...but even more startling to her, she dons an entirely new outfit which strongly resembles that of a sailor suit.
Utterly confused as to what's going on, she then comes to face to face with her toughest opponent yet—Jinpachi Mishima, the host of the tournament.
From this moment on, reality shifts into a new paradigm, setting the groundwork for White Moon Saga.
MISC
Yukina's voice claim is Shizuka Itō
Her face, when drawn realistically, is loosely based on Mirei Kiritani
She has a red crowned crane motif in her training gear
The inspiration for her use of dual sai stems from Elektra (Marvel) and Raphael (TMNT), which begins in Arc 2
She presses flowers for a hobby
Her go-to drink is chamomile tea with a splash of milk and honey

The dojo I found only meets twice a week, but class size has increased since I joined, including regular visits from dan level aikidoka.* I've also bumped into dimly remembered familiar faces, because we all know each other. It's been fun so far, good exercise that helps balance the nervous system, and I'm impressed by my (hilariously mixed up) muscle memory.
*A sensei with nothing but beginners really struggles to retain students because basic skills are a tough learning curve, and comparatively boring. Having those of us in fancy hakama do flying rolls and breakfalls provides a tangible goal post, and senpai to expedite teaching.
Like many senior aikido folks, I know additional martial arts to provide striking techniques (since aikido doesn't have any). I've a varied collection assembled from tae kwon do, escrima, boxing and jujutsu, mostly a matter of expedience. I also have a maddeningly low center of gravity, which is forcing all the taller students to gradually learn seiza waza. Entertaining memories so far:
The black belt who got too used to dealing with opponents his own size. I kept spinning back out of his grip, popping back up and throwing a punch at his face (not too fast since technique is performed at uke's speed of attack). On the third attempt, he stayed under my center of gravity and got me fully airborne, and I went down into a tidy, prone breakfall. It sticks in my mind because I realized all the junior students had paused to watch our nonsense.
The aikikai students who have no martial sense, never keep their guards up and don't understand the most basic rule of combat: keep moving. I'm leaving their silliness for the sensei to deal with because in my prior dojo, someone would gently encourage such defensive motion with timely boops to the face.
The period during which sensei was out with covid, leaving the class to his senior students, which forced me to step up as senpai even though I'm new there. It was a delicate balancing act for everyone involved.
That one poor fellow who keeps curving his shoulders forward so that, even though he's a foot taller and outweighs me by, like, sixty pounds, I just keep dragging him around. Last week he kept over-turning, so I started reminding him why you shouldn't just present your back to nage. By punching him a bit. Any applying a helpful kick to propel him into a discard throw. Sensei unsympathetically heckled him while he was down. rip.
In another, the senior student teaching that day used me to demonstrate why uke should think twice about being clever and getting squirrely. It's not that there aren't escapes to various arm bars or throws; it's that you shouldn't make assumptions about your opponents full skillset and potential retaliation. Nage matches uke's level of attack, after all.
She grabbed at me and I spun her into a yankyo pin, beginning with the standing position, with her wrist braced against my hip, and my foot on her shoulder blade, before dropping into the seiza pin. As I dropped, she demonstrated a shoulder tuck and roll that was possible during that moment of transition.
Rather than fight her escape, I blocked a potential tight range kick, which would lack full power while she was still on her back, then closed in seiza to throw a left cross at her jaw, as she began speaking to the students. She spotted it just in time to yield into the strike, though not block. I used that point of distraction to jump back out of kicking range, my actual goal. We took turns explaining how getting squirrely can trigger randori. If you aren't prepared to cope with open sparring, don't start.

🖋🎴Daily-ish Hanafuda pt.3 progress!
Someone with Goemon’s face opened the door. The man was wearing an aikidoka’s outfit and poise: straight as a rod in a stark white kimono made of fluid, heavy cotton and a black pleated hakama, held closed by a sharp square knot. An ample black haori vest completed the outfit, going down to the knees and hiding any movement until it was too late and a sword was against your neck. It was embroidered on the chest with a kanji in place of the kamon. The fabric was raised in the back by the long shape of a katana slid in the belt. The man’s hair was tied in a practical bun, and he oozed the sort of calm and cold confidence that only mafia bosses and high-class bodyguards could reach. Then the man smiled, and Goemon appeared.

That time when an aikidoka challenged a BJJ brown belt to a street fight rules match
This is an old video that went viral around 3 years ago but I guess I want to revive it in this post. Cyan Heskett, a self-taught aikidoka, said in an Instagram video that he believed aikido was better than BJJ for street fights and MMA matches. He then came to an MMA gym in Memphis and challenged a brown belt by the name of Jason Aldridge there for a street fight rules no holds barred spar. To…

Words
Tumblr media
During the years that I have practiced or taught aikido, the physical movements were often clarified, explained, or directed by words.  Some of them were Japanese; most were English translations of Japanese expressions and constructs.
Blend with your opponent, extend ki, keep maai, practice fudoshin, keep one point, kokyu-nage, take ukemi, uke, nage, hatori waza.
As a student, I hear them as explanations and directions.  As a teacher, I returned the favor.  They became the lingua franca of the class.  The language bridging the art’s movements with the mystical dimensions of budo. As a student, I assumed that the expressions and translations heard were correct. And the ones I used when I taught were uttered in the absolute belief I understood their meaning.
In 1991, Dave Lowry, an American martial artist, wrote an article entitled Aiki of Words.  It was published in Aikido Today, the premier magazine for Aikido during that time.  The point of the article was to caution aikidoka about the use of English to understand what Aikido is.
“Morihei Ueshiba never talked about harmony.  The founder of Aikido never spoke either, despite what you’ve been told, about love or the relationship between Aikido and the mechanics of the universe.
By now the reader, if he has recovered from his outrage over these apparently heretical pronouncements, will have guessed that there is a little linguistic sleight of hand at work here.  O’sensei did not mention these things because he did not speak English.  If you think, however, that Ueshiba Sensei and other Japanese speakers were simply using a different language and that there are English translations that mean virtually the same, you are not just mistaken.  You are ignoring one of the most significant and often-overlooked gaps that yawn between Aikido as it is practiced in its native environs and as it is followed in the West…
..unless they are very careful or undertake a serious study of the Japanese language (and its attendant culture) at the same time as learning Aikido, even dedicated enthusiasts may find themselves having slid into a sloppy reliance upon poor or incomplete translations – a reliance that may soon be reflected in a less than accurate understanding of Aikido itself.”
A number of words used in a dojo’s practice, such as maai and ki, have subtle and nuanced meanings. Witness the recent change of extending ki to ki is extending.  While the change seems a slight juggling of word placement, the change in meaning is significant.
All of it reminds me of the old party game, where you whisper a message to one person, and they, in turn, pass it on to another.  Around the room, or down the line, the message is whispered from ear to ear until it arrives at the last person in the room.  It is a good bet that the resulting message is nowhere near what the original was.  The words and their meaning passing from one person to another colored by what I mean when I say them and what you perceive when you hear them.
So what is the point of all of this?  It is to be cautious.  Understand that unless someone is well versed in the Japanese language and culture, you are depending on a teacher’s best efforts to educate themselves on the meaning of things. Have a healthy skepticism; trust and verify what you told and taught.  Ask questions.
Also, in recent times, Kashiwaya Sensei, the Chief Instructor of our federation of dojos, has started to make more direct statements about what things mean and don’t mean.
I am a Ki-Aikido instructor, but I am still training.  Therefore, I refrain from saying things that I understand, such as "What is Aikido" or "What is Tenchi”. The reason is that the students will misunderstand that is the answer.  I think these answers should be felt after each student has practiced sincerely.
The short answer is to stay critical, open, and practice.  Question authority, especially your own.  That is the practice.  Say hai, I understand, because that is not the same as saying yes.

EEEEEE, THANK YOU POOKIE!! ( ˘⌣˘)♡(˘⌣˘ )
YUKINA
4. what song describes your OC and their partner/love interest? - while i have a whole playlist for yukina and hwo, this one works pretty well! depending on the verse, it can be yukina talking about hwo or vice versa
6. if your OC is in a fantasy setting, what profession would they be in the modern day? - i see this going two ways:
if yukina follows her plan, she goes to school so she can be a genetics specialist and help people with certain ailments and deficiencies like her mom
if yukina doesn't go through with that, she would be an aikidoka (japanese for "aikido master") and instruct full time
26. what flower do you associate your OC with? - white rose! it's not only her favorite, it symbolizes loyalty, purity, and innocence
IZUMI
4. what song describes your OC and their partner/love interest? - oh that's tough. since izumi doesn't have a major relationship in WMS' main story, the best i can offer is a song for her boy hunting escapades
6. if your OC is in a fantasy setting, what profession would they be in the modern day? - a home ec teacher!! she loves doing hands-on projects, so letting her show people how to cook or how to sew would make her happy
26. what flower do you associate your OC with? - yellow pansies! they symbolize happiness and joy
REI
4. what song describes your OC and their partner/love interest? - THIS IS GONNA BE THE CHEEKIEST SONG I CAN MUSTER FOR REI AND HER BOY, BUT--
the message is v cute and it fits them
6. if your OC is in a fantasy setting, what profession would they be in the modern day? - while being a student, rei's time would be spent training in martial arts with her parents! i also see her spending her time reading mythology books at the library
26. what flower do you associate your OC with? - calla liiy! it's her favorite flower and symbolizes purity, beauty, and rebirth
thanks for asking! | send in an OC question

🧐 discovery 🤕 injury
Thank you for the ask! :D
"Hanafuda" is an AU in which Jigen and Goemon both retired from being criminals before they met, and are now trying to live an honest life and hide their dark past from each other.
///
🧐 discovery
Jigen froze. So did Goemon. “Jigen,” Lupin exclaimed while his two friends looked at each other with eyes the size of saucers, “this is Goemon Ishikawa! Goemon, meet Daisuke Jigen. We go way back.” The florist was holding a bouquet, and staring at Jigen like he’d seen a ghost. “I... um... we know each other,” he mumbled, lowering his eyes. “Oh, you do?” Lupin asked, delighted. Jigen glared at him. “Great! You better come in. Pops and Fujiko can’t wait to see you! (...) Lupin passed Jigen by, carrying a flower holder, and the tattooist grabbed him by the shoulder. “Tell me,” he whispered, “how many aikidoka florists working near my parlour do you know?” Lupin carefully tucked the vase under his arm, and started counting on his fingers, his tongue poking out in concentration. Then he turned to his friend with a wide smile. “Just the one! Why?” “Fucker.”
///
🤕 injury
There was the sound of footsteps, and Goemon appeared, towering over Jigen. His kimono was torn in a few places, a couple of dark red stains spotted the fabric, and the remnants of righteous fury darkened his face. His expression melted into worry when he saw the tattooist cowered in his corner. He dropped his sword on the ground and knelt in front of his friend. He cupped Jigen’s face with his hand, and very delicately raised his chin. Jigen was pretty sure his heart stopped beating right there and then. “Are you hurt?” Goemon asked, his voiced strained under the effort of remaining gentle. “Did they do anything to you?”
