Lena Horne was an #American singer, dancer, actress & civil rights activist. An icon. Her career spanned over 70 years, appearing in film, television & theater. She joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of 16 & became a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood. Lena was born in BedStuy, Brooklyn. She was reportedly a descendent of John C. Calhoun (the 7th Vice President of the US), both sides of her family were mixed with #African, #NativeAmerican & #EuropeanAmerican descent. Her maternal grandmother, Amelie Louise Ashton was a #Senegalese slave. In 1934 #AdelaideHall, a major figure in the #HarlemRenaissance, became her mentor. She toured with various bands & orchestra’s. She appeared in a number of films such as Stormy Weather (which was based loosely on Adelaide Hall), Cabin in the Sky, Ziegfeld Follies & Show Boat. Because of her race, she couldn’t get any leading roles, all of her films had to be re-edited because many theaters wouldn’t show films with black performers or #interracial relationships. Naturally, she left Hollywood to focus on her nightclub career but was black listed in the 1950s for her affiliations with communist groups. In 1958, she became the first Black woman to be nominated for a Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award for her performance in Jamaica. She still holds the record as the longest running solo performer in #Broadway history. She was active in the #civilrightsmovement. She performed for soldiers during WWII & noticed black soldiers werent allowed or forced to sit in the back. She walked off stage & performed for the first row of Black soldiers with the German soldiers behind her. She later quit & financed her own tours for the military herself. She worked with President Kennedy & Eleanor Roosevelt on civil rights and anti lynching laws, marched on Washington, was affiliated with Dr King & Malcolm X & received a medal from the NAACP for her work after the attacks in #Selma. She has 4 Grammy’s, a Tony Award and was awarded a medal at the Kennedy Center Honors. She was the first African American to serve on the Screen Actors Guild board of directors. She died at 92. 🇺🇸🏴🏳️ #wcw #womenshistorymonth #mixedgirl https://www.instagram.com/p/B9mtlPhFnIj/?igshid=1mb4y6w4qn6nv

SHUFFLE ALONG - 1921 First Broadway Musical to portray a serious African-American love story, rather than comedic. It was the most successful major production written and performed entirely by Black Americans. The music & lyrics by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, book by Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles and a historically jaw-dropping group of hoofing chorus girls produced a hit score that kept the show running much longer than any other Broadway shows of the era. The show popularized a new “street dance” called “the Charleston” and launched the careers of Josephine Baker, Adelaide Hall, Florence Mills, Fredi Washington and Paul Robeson, It was revived in 33 & 55 and inspired last year’s critical hit “Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed” by George C. Wolfe. On a personal note, I began researching this show 20 years ago as we were writing our first musical, “A Song of Greenwood” based on the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. “Shuffle Along” opened less than a month after the Tulsa tragedy. @BroadwayBlack @ShuffleAlongBroadway @LoJoWerkz #LoJoWerkz #LoJoWerkzDailyDope #DAILYDOPE #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryFirsts #TheLastShallbeFirstandtheFirstsShallbeLast #ShuffleAlong #Broadway #HoofersonBroadway #EubieBlake #NobleSissle #ImJustWildAboutHarry #LoveWillFindaWay #JosephineBaker #AdelaideHall #FlorenceMills #FrediWashington #PaulRobeson #GeorgeCWolfe #SavionGlover #WallsBrokenDown #BarriersShattered #GreatFirsts #WhoGotNext

Personas
These are the personas we created for our idea. Adelaide and I both discussed in the first class that we wanted to have two personas, as our idea revolves around young teenagers to older teenagers/young adults.
The connection will be shown within our design, allowing both users to work well with our content.
adelaidehall:
We decided to have one as a younger girl (14 years old) and a young adult male (21). This means we’re still including an adult and child but targeting the younger adults as that includes that demographic but also means we can create for older people who may have similar values/needs as the 21 year old.
The 21 year old male is Maori. We did this because we think we definitely need to create this responsive website with Maori people in mind as they have the higher suicide rates and could really use some support. It means we’re always keeping in mind things such as using the Maori language and imagery that is inclusive of all cultures.
Olivia allows us to address the youth of New Zealand. We can use her persona to get in the heads of teenagers and take us back to when Jess and I were younger and struggling with our identity and place in the world. Having a relationship with her parents that is a bit distant pushes us to create a place where younger people feel like they can escape.
