CV: We wrote a very detailed script. We talked a lot about how Bruno and Pietro would be together, how and when they would sit next to each other, what they were able to say to each other, and what it meant every time they met. We wanted it to be subtle.

We had an incredibly long casting process to find the right actors and put them in the right roles, because, initially, the actors were attracted to the opposite roles. Luca [Marinelli] felt naturally inclined towards Bruno, and it took us four or five months to realise that it should be the other way around. And then it was magic. The two are very good friends in real life, they had just made a great movie together in Italy [Don’t Be Bad, 2015], shared this incredible chemistry and were looking for a project to work on next.  The second thing she did was lock her door and put a chair underneath it just to be safe. She then put down her bag on her desk and emptied out her bag to keep a small supply of food in her room if she didn't get dinner on a later date.

 The food was stored in a smaller ripped bag that she used to use before the straps broke off, while Maxwell believed that she had got rid of it, London was making sure of her eating at a later date.

 "It could be worse" she murmured to herself as she exited off the website on her phone, at least he didn't beat her. He at least trusted her enough to allow her a smartphone, even if he did periodically check up on her and he even allowed her to have a laptop, though Maxwell did take it away and monitored her internet usage.

 London sat down on her bed as she thought about it, her uncle was kind enough to put a roof over her head and give her technology, but on the other hand, he monitored her and what she read in an attempt to shelter her. Could she really call it abuse when he had her best intentions at heart? Was it even abuse, London could just be misreading the entire situation.

 There was a knock at her door, which was enough to prompt London to remove the chair, she knew that Maxwell wasn't the type to knock, which narrowed down the list of potential suspects to be Jessica. Opening the door confirmed her guess, revealing the rather mild-mannered form of her cousin, who still had her blonde hair in a ponytail.

Nor would they/press contact like everyone whose ever been on the show to say a tribute to Andy leaving the show. Thats a little too much of insane theatrics lol. 

2. Andy leaving for his family is starting to look like a lie. One thing I keep forgetting (because I didn't know this til awhile ago) is that his family moved back to England in 2016. I always thought they stayed with him in Atlanta and had been since 2010. I find it funny that some cast members, well particularly Chandler, keep saying “oh he’s been away from his family for like 8 years.” I’m like wait, what? It hasn't been that long lmao. I mean living away from family for 2 years has got to be hard but some cast make it seem like its been a decade. His wife and kids moved 2 years ago back to England so theres a marriage shakeup. There was an article from the guardian in May 2016, the my wife is my app comment one lol, where it seems like his wife is happy and making a home for their family in Atlanta so what changed.

Im just like dude you didnt have to have your character killed if you knew you’d be back while season 9 is still filming.

8. How I feel it went down after this May: Andy needed to go back home for an extended period of time and he wasn't too sure how long it would be. He had to go back home because his kids, custody, divorce and such. Of course he cant say thats the reason to press lol. Him leaving this season got leaked out so AMC had to go with the perfect family man going back to his family reason. Probably because its close to the truth and also to soften blowback when people find out its cause divorce he left. Also all these tributes are to soften blowback as well, well partially. AMC is still milking Rick’s departure for all its worth. He was then going to come back to ATL in like October to shadow then direct next year. Reason why Im frustrated is that he had to go along with this bs and now precious richonne is gonna be gone. I still think they shoulda went with the “left to pursue other projects” reason. Periodically preppers and prepper fiction bring up hoof stock as options for A Bad Thing that removes electric and combustion engines. It’s really only been 100-150 years since equines and bovines were the go-to, and in some less-developed nations, they still are. There are also still plenty of areas worldwide where we can find bovines and equines laboring alongside tractors and transport vehicles. Even here in the U.S., we use livestock to access remote areas, help us haul big game out of back country, and periodically tow somebody’s 4×4 out of mud or off a frozen rut. So it’s not all that unreasonable.

However, things have changed with livestock, and there are an awful lot of people who maybe romanticize it, and who don’t really understand livestock’s’ needs or consider the options we have. I’ll come back and detail some hoof stock horsepower aspects in greater detail, but I want to start by thumb-nailing some of the basics and vox populi.

Workhorse Basics

There are generally three equines in the horsepower conversation, horses, donkeys and mules. Horses are mares (female) and stallions (male). In donkeys, it’s jenny and jack, and in mules it’s molly and john (johns are also “horse mules”). Babies are foals, colt (male) or filly (female)

Jennet – Some still use jennet for a specific size and gaited horse (of any breed; a descriptive like “bay” or “goer”). Usually when we hear it, it’s just a different way to say “jenny”. Some use jennet instead of filly for immature female mules.

Sometimes it’s jargon referring to dedicated-nanny livestock guardian donkeys that mother their adopted herds, more than just chasing threats, or to a mule or donkey that cottons to her human and nuzzles or defends them like she would a foal.

Ponies – They’re technically the same species as horses, but they have different conformations. Ponies and mini horses also seem to have … uhm, character … more often than other equines. (Not all ponies are Demon Goats. Mini horses, now….)

Geld Often & Early – Multiple stallions/jacks are like having too many roosters: it causes problems. Geldings are also far easier to handle than un-cut males, and since spaying is a non-starter for equines and bovines, it’s the only method of population control.

Oxen (and yaks) – Oxen are mature gelded cattle, with dairy breeds generally preferred. For significant chunks of American history, they – not equines – were the go-to engine. They were so favored during wester expansion heydays that start-point towns ran out of them, even after their prices tripled. (They defaulted down to mules.) They’re still the most-used draft animal worldwide due to their economy, durability, and power.

Yaks are bovines, too, but like Asian and African cattle, they have some differences due to our specific breeding trends.

Cattle really rate their own article. I’ll mostly talk equines here, but I wanted to toss in oxen because they’re so often minimized or absent when preppers talk livestock farm labor or backup labor for long-term, widespread disasters.

Bursting Bubbles

Nutrition – The days of domestic hoofstock eating solely off pasture is largely gone, due both to the graze areas we usually have available and modern livestock’s needs. If realistic sustainable feed isn’t part of the prepper plan, working hoofstock needs to be left off, too (all livestock, really).

Feed is the largest expense in ownership, and it’s greatest for horses. Horses require higher-quality nutrition, more highly digestible nutrition, and more protein per bodyweight and work. Donkeys are darn-near goats. They need less total by bodyweight and much lower-quality feeds. Too much feed and too much protein will actually make them sick and in very short time, they’ll get fussy, cantankerous, and hard to handle.

Training Takes Time – It starts with handling from birth, ideally, and exposure to what we want. I’m not saying to work an immature animal, but to have it ready to work once it’s mature. Most equines and bovines also require refreshers and continuing work to remain steady on lead and under rein, and animals require the same ramp-up exercises and maintenance conditioning as human athletes.

Training to task isn’t automatic or as easy as dogs. Many owners and even large-animal vets have no idea how to train working stock from scratch. Don’t count on either for next-gen working livestock in widespread disasters; find a trainer.

Mules Are Infertile – Mules are crosses between horse mares and jack donkeys. The parents have different numbers of chromosomes, which leads to mules’ infertility. (Hinnys get lumped in as mules, but their parents are swapped. Chromosome counts and preferences make them relatively rare.)

Male mules are always infertile. Female mules are fertile and viable so rarely it makes national news if one carries to term. Ours will not be the exception. If repeatable next-generation hoofstock is part of your goal, starting with mules is not going to get you there. You need parent stock or to pick a species.

Gun Shy – Horses, longears, and cattle are not automatically chill about gunfire, especially shots going off right behind their heads. Train up for a gun horse, or prepare to outrun the bad guys or haul that elk home yourself.

It also takes a good seat and practice to get even center-mass shots from a moving vehicle, to include wagons and saddles. Just sayin’.

Bonus add-on: You can get earplugs for horses to save their hearing (kid ya’ not). Gun dogs, too.

Horses Are Delicate – They always have been, comparatively, but along with the way we’ve tailored other domestic animals (and crops) in modern times, there are tradeoffs. Horses have developed fragilities from their guts to their feet, as well as increasingly demanding feed needs, especially performance breeds. We also breed in injury and illness-inducing stuff for the sake of looks (oversizing, undersizing, dish-face Arabians).

Bare-Bones Basics

Size Matters – Breeding lineage leads to wildly different shapes and sizes between equines and within breeds. All tack (even bits) varies to fit differing conformation, and is not automatically transferable between animals, even moving between horses and near-sized long ears. Tack is also purpose-driven, especially harnesses.

Hoofstock has hooves – Hooves are just big ol’ thick toenails. They grow, continually. Most domestic hoofstock needs help with their toenails these days, typically every 4-6-8 weeks. Many owners/groomers call in a specialist. Some handle their own hoof care, but many of those still want their work checked several times a year.

Vets are not farriers – Even if there’s a hoof problem (or a problem we’re going to address by changing the hoof and thus how weight is carried), a large-animal vet will typically tell the farrier what they’re after. Very few do it themselves (or know how).

Shoes – Shoes are not automatically necessary (excellent article & images: http://rockleyfarm.blogspot.com/2013/05/what-happens-when-hoof-wall-wears-away.html). Of note to preppers who do shoe, in recent decades we’ve gained more availability of temp and short-term special-purpose shoes, which increases our at-home, non-specialist prepper-stocking capabilities.

Filing – Instead of pincher trims for hooves, we can file as part of regular grooming. Equines also sometimes need tooth work, for many reasons, typically accomplished with a file (and sometimes a chisel, drill, and pliers). That is a specialist skill. It’s one that needs learned if we’re after complete equine sustainability.

LGDs – Livestock guardians is a big topic, one with lots of “if” that I’ll detail in a future article if nobody beats me to it (donkeys+dogs considerations, too). The quickfire is: Standard jenny or gelded donkeys, not jacks, not minis, not horses or mules.

Also remember that donkeys will regularly ignore other species if there are enough equines to satisfy their herd needs (usually at 3+).

Shy-Stand – In fight-flight-freeze reactions, horses generally flee. They shy, and when they bolt, they go. They’re also more prone to making big shows, throwing hooves around and slinging heads.

When longears see something hinky, they stop and study it until they decide how they’re handling *it*. That “stubborn” freeze is a fear, precaution or confusion manifestation, not meanness. They’re also pretty conservative with energy, and if you progress past ear cues and warning brays, they aim those feet and make sure their hit counts. (Teeth, too.)

Donkeys & mules are hard to bully – They also don’t fall for our pitiful “treat” coercions as often as dogs and horses, and they’ll call bluffs. When they “nope” but they must move, now, stop pulling the head. Push with a blanket or strap – not rope – behind its thighs.

Smart, not Stubborn – Had Geronimo been riding a donkey or mule, he’d have gone over that cliff by himself.

Donkeys and their mule/hinny offspring are too intelligent to put up with as much nonsense as horses and dogs. If they see stupid taking place or prior humans have taught them we’re mean/idiots, they’re even more inclined to dig in their heels. And just like the really smart dog breeds are not typically in the “easy to train” category, longears require creativity and patience.

Treat it with respect, earn its faith, and train with clear, sensible steps. They’ll be an affectionate puppy willing to cross hells for us, too.

Conventional Wisdoms

Donkeys/Mules don’t founder – Myth. Founder is laminitis – swelling of the tissue that connects equine hooves to their skeletons – but it’s sometimes used for any stock animal dropping from exhaustion. Longears founder, but it’s usually from overfeeding and too much protein, not physical faults, heat, exertion, or overwork. (Psst … Oxen are troopers, too.)

A safer mount/draft – Welllll… Donkeys tend to be sure-footed. That, their “stop and look” reaction to unknowns and threats, and their unwillingness to endanger themselves all contribute to longears’ reputations as safer animals under rein or on lines.

They’re also savvy and attentive, possibly because they still have more “wild” blood and inclinations, have smaller offspring, and aren’t fast enough to get away from as many things as horses can. Mules inherit that. So they do seem to startle less frequently.

I will grant that pack horses are more prone to boredom issues. But I’m still not willing to make a blanket assertion that horses (or specifically geldings) drift/zone/doze and stumble more often on trail.

For draft safety, don’t forget about oxen. Next time a Western shows a runaway stagecoach or stirrup-hung cowboy, check out what’s pulling them. Hollywood, sure, but I’ll betcha those runaways aren’t oxen.

Pound for pound, longears out-work horses – Wellllll… This argument gets made using both feed weight and carry-haul weights ratios of animal weight. Breaking down the numbers (and the problems with animal-weight percentages) needs its own article. But … okay, yeah, mostly.

Donkey/mule economy and strength ratios fit more potentials, but they’re not always the best fit. There is work that speedsters or cobbs/drafts and oxen are better suited to, if we can handle horses’ expense or oxen’s one-gear speeds (admittedly, it’s a low gear). There are also donkey/mule tradeoffs – training style, human-behavior tolerances, that noise.

Marish – Oh, REALLY real – Mares tend to have a little more attitude than non-breeding stallions or geldings. (Personal opinion: Mares are sneakier, too. And smug about it.) Longears can be opinionated, but jennies no more than geldings or jacks. Jennies are also less likely to exhibit any special stubbornness or PMS-like symptoms when they come into season.

Prepper Horsepower

Few working animals actually pay for themselves in modern nations, and many are ill suited to a subsistence lifestyle due to our commonly limited land. Still, their prevalence as labor in low-income areas worldwide should keep anybody from just immediately scoffing off hoofstock as a long-term grid-down preparation to make – when we’re educated and financially secure enough to provide for them.

Replacing our electric and combustion horsepower with livestock is full of factors to consider. A lot goes into maintenance, and there’s a lot to weigh between each’s needs and abilities and our own. If there’s interest, I’ll revisit the horsepower topic in the future with some details for comparison on the options, uses, working lifespan, load weights, and team synergy.

Meanwhile Monbiot, notwithstanding years of valuable environmental journalism, has shown consistently poor judgment when writing about foreign policy. There are now no plausible fig leaves to hide the Guardian’s liberal gatekeeper role in suppressing, marginalising and smearing the required radical challenges to established power. This insidious role was highlighted once again in a woeful piece by Jonathan Freedland in the wake of last week’s council elections. Titled, ‘No more excuses: Jeremy Corbyn is to blame for this meltdown’, the Guardian sage and BBC contributor pointed to a projected national figure of 27% support for Labour, ‘the worst recorded by an opposition since the BBC started making such calculations in 1981.’ This time it was not ‘a judgment delivered by the hated mainstream media’: the pejorative phrase suggesting that the ‘hate’ is unjustified or overwrought. ‘The verdict of the electorate’, the former Guardian opinion editor intoned, ‘was damning’. We will examine the thinking behind Freedland’s sweeping dismissal in what follows. But first, we need to remind ourselves of the incessant media vitriol and opposition faced by Jeremy Corbyn since he first ran for the Labour leadership in 2015. Extensive evidence of this corporate media bias has been presented in studies published by Media Reform Coalition and Birkbeck, University of London and by the London School of Economics. Why should there be such huge media – indeed establishment – opposition towards Corbyn? Des Freedman, Professor of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London, puts it succinctly: Jeremy Corbyn represents – and, crucially, is seen to represent – a potential threat to vested interests in a way that right-wing Labour figures never did. This is what underlies the extraordinary hostility to his leadership. Any radical individual or movement that refuses to abide by the usual consensus on austerity, immigration or foreign policy can expect to be either marginalised or ridiculed, misrepresented or ignored. This tells us a lot about the balance of power in the mainstream media: you depart from the rules, you should expect to be punished. A letter from numerous academics and media activists, including Greg Philo of the Glasgow Media Group, Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman, published in the Guardian, ironically, noted: The leadership of Jeremy Corbyn has been subject to the most savage campaign of falsehood and misrepresentation in some of our most popular media outlets. He has, at different times, been derided, ignored, vilified and condemned. Let’s now turn to Jonathan Freedland’s article. A key piece of his ‘evidence’ for pinning Labour’s ‘meltdown’ on Corbyn comes from Dave Wilcox, a former Labour group leader in Derbyshire, who said that he was repeatedly told by ‘genuine Labour supporters’ when canvassing that ‘we are not voting for you while you have Jeremy Corbyn as leader.’ Freedland adds: He will be howled down, of course, by the online Corbynista army who will tell Wilcox that what he heard with his own ears never happened, that it’s an invention of the media, that it’s really the fault of the media and plotting Labour MPs. The sneering reference to an ‘online Corbynista army’ reveals the smug condescension at the core of Freedland’s mindset. From his superior perspective, there is simply no need to take seriously the ample evidence of intense media and political antagonism towards Corbyn and his policies; likewise, the barrage of opposition from many Labour MPs whose views often lie to the right of their own constituents and local party members. As Graham Bash of Labour Briefing observes, when Corbyn won the Labour leadership in September 2015: the parliamentary Labour party shamefully refused to accept the party’s overwhelming verdict, briefed against Corbyn, forced a second leadership contest, acted as a party within a party and feared a Corbyn government more than another Tory government. Rather than point to any of this, Freedland instead wants to emphasise the views of two focus groups in Birmingham, largely consisting of Labour voters. This was an event co-organised by Huffington Post and Edelman Communications, a huge PR company (clearly with no vested interest in shaking up society): They described Jeremy Corbyn as a “dope”, “living in the past”, “a joke”, as “looking as if he knows less about it than I do”. One woman admired Corbyn’s sincerity; one man thought his intentions were good. But she reckoned he lacked “the qualities to be our leader”; and he believed Corbyn was simply too “soft”. Freedland belittled Labour’s John McDonnell for supposedly turning a blind eye to the facts of the election: When the best that shadow chancellor John McDonnell can offer is that the party has not been completely wiped out, you glimpse the scale of the disaster. But Corbyn and his team do not dispute the mammoth task that lies ahead if success at the General Election on June 8 is to be achieved. And, unlike Freedland, McDonnell has rightly pointed to the role of the media in blocking fair and open debate which is, we are so often told, a prerequisite for genuine democracy: We expect all the usual abuse and bias from the Mail and Sun, but the Guardian and BBC are just as biased, but in a more subtle way. In a piece titled, ‘The media are trying to destroy Jeremy Corbyn,’ McDonnell expanded about the press coverage he and Corbyn had received during the Labour leadership campaign: None of them, except the Morning Star, supported us. Even the liberal left Guardian opposed us and undermined us at every opportunity. (Our emphasis) He added: It can sound like we’re paranoid but the reality is that the treatment Jeremy has had across the media has been appalling. It’s the worst any politician has been treated. The problem with the BBC and other broadcasters is that because of the cut backs that have gone on with journalists, they are taking their stories from newspapers rather than investigating and reporting for themselves and therefore the bias of the press infects the broadcast media too… It’s an object lesson about the establishment using its power in the media to try and destroy an individual and what he stands for. As we saw above, there is ample evidence of this vitriolic media opposition towards Corbyn and what he stands for. But Freedland, a well-rewarded journalist with a typically complacent liberal Guardian/BBC worldview, has no interest or incentive in seriously exploring this ‘savage campaign’. The disdain, indeed contempt, for socialism in Guardian/BBC circles has been made ever more apparent by the direct threat posed by a Corbyn-led Labour party. No wonder, then, that historian Mark Curtis, author of important books on UK foreign policy including ‘Web of Deceit’ and ‘Unpeople’, described Freedland’s article as ‘a visceral hate-piece’. There were so many possibilities for the most ridiculous or laughable lines from Freedland. Curtis proposed this one: Having finally won control of the Labour party after three decades of Stakhanovite effort, what radical programme have these great revolutionaries pledged to the nation? Four extra bank holidays. One of our readers, Rob Newton, begged to differ with Curtis, nominating these lines instead: Corbyn’s defenders will blame the media, but what was striking about these groups was that few of the participants ever bought a paper and they seldom watched a TV bulletin. As Newton pointed out, Freedland was apparently proposing a remarkable phenomenon of ‘opinions informed by osmosis’. Or is it a complete coincidence that people might believe Corbyn is supposedly ‘unfit’ to be Prime Minister after nearly two years of the ‘mainstream’ media constantly hyping this ‘truth’? But what about these lines? Blaming others won’t do. Instead, how refreshing it would be, just this once, if Corbyn and McDonnell put their hands up and took even a small measure of responsibility for this calamitous result. This is also surely a strong candidate for most risible comment. There is the added irony that Freedland has completely buried the role of his own newspaper in opposing Corbyn from the very moment he ran for the Labour leadership. To not even mention this fact, is to betray the intellectual dishonesty at the heart of Freedland’s ‘analysis’. He even makes a ludicrous claim for Tony Blair’s ‘leftwing’ credentials: Corbyn and McDonnell’s programme includes nothing remotely as leftwing as, say, the £5bn windfall tax on the utilities promised, and implemented, 20 years ago by the supposed evil neoliberal Tony Blair. It appears that Freedland is just not ready to let go of one of his lifetime heroes. Then again, it seems that hardly a week goes by without the Guardian wheeling out the blood-soaked war criminal to promote the former PM’s views; not least if it means another chance to try to land a punch on Corbyn. Ironically, just a few days after Freedland’s egregious article was published, his erstwhile colleague Roy Greenslade, the Guardian’s former media commentator, now Professor of Journalism at City University London, had a generally good piece titled, ‘Prince and commoner: one rule for Philip and another for Jeremy’. Greenslade rightly noted that: Mainstream media as a whole took its gloves off and Corbyn’s electoral hopes have been doomed from day one. He was “a great leap backwards”, said the Mail. Beware this “absurd Marxist”, said the Express, while the Daily Telegraph referred to his “divisive ideology” and “atavistic hostility to wealth and success”. And the Sun? It just called him “bonkers”. There was scepticism too from the liberal left. The Independent thought he would not persuade middle England to accept his policies. Neither the Daily Mirror nor the Guardian greeted him with open arms. Greenslade continued: The overall anti-Corbyn agenda, repeated week upon week, month after month, was one that broadcasters were unable to overlook, despite their belief in balance and adherence to impartiality. News bulletin reports reflected the headlines. Current affairs programmes picked up on the themes. That’s how media narratives are constructed. Aside from a general antagonism towards his brand of socialist politics and the gleeful exploration of internal party dissension, overlapping themes of inconsistency, incompetence and incoherence have emerged. He concluded: In such a climate, was anyone in the least bit surprised by Labour being stuffed in the local elections? This was a rare example of honest commentary in stark contrast to the Guardian’s shameful campaign against Corbyn (which has appalled many of their readers). Inevitably, Greenslade did not go anywhere near far enough in acknowledging his old paper’s endless attacks on Corbyn. To say merely that the Guardian did not greet Corbyn with ‘open arms’ was conspicuously mealy-mouthed in an otherwise admirable piece. But, to his credit, at least Greenslade recognises a real media phenomenon that his ex-colleague Freedland seems desperate to bury. http://clubof.info/

‘Dairy is scary’ the article said, well I found the fact this article managed to be published in a national newspaper scary. In fact I was nearly speechless, after writing my first blog post, I was informed the Guardian had written their own take on the Daily Mail’s article, which made the former look like a bedtime story.

So I want to start from the top, paragraph by paragraph and explain what is true and what is not.

Firstly, whilst widely used, artificial insemination is not the only way cows are made pregnant, ‘Traditional’ methods are still used (!) i.e a bull, on most farms. Insemination is used for many reasons to improve your animals by accessing the best semen; cow health and lameness are widely selected for along with other production traits. The majority of bulls have semen taken from them using this method, not 'mechanical extraction':

1. Cow in heat turns up to ‘tease’ the bull

2. Bull doing what bulls do, jumps her  

3. When he draws out his penis, an assistant places the penis into basically a posh collecting flask, now the bull does the deed and if you ask me, is probably pretty happy about it.

Now, I have been on an AI course, so I will tell you exactly what happens when you AI a cow. Cows are put in a cattle crush or AI stall to protect both them and me from injury. A crush locks the cows head so it is standing in a stall so I can access the rear, whilst an AI stall leaves her free, with a small chain parallel to her knees to prevent her from kicking me or reversing.   Logically I am not going to ‘brutally impregnate her’ because why would I want to damage her internally, I want her to produce a calf. If blood (from damaged tissue) was actually present during the insemination, the procedure would have a very low success rate because white blood cells see semen as ‘foreign’ and would destroy it, which isn’t exactly conducive to pregnancy. Also I might add, neither is stress, but funnily enough conception rate from AI can nearly equal natural service. So the insemination itself: 1.  I have my AI ‘gun’ already prepped (this is about 30 cm in length and about as thin as a drinking straw (so definitely smaller than a bulls penis (!) so it is not going to hurt her!)   2. You insert your hand into the cow’s rectum (no I don’t imagine this is pleasant)  so you can find the cervix. 3. Now your other hand is free to insert the gun (which has been down your back, keeping nice and warm- to keep the semen warm, not because I’m odd) through the cervix and press down releasing the semen just on the other side.   4. A good technician will have this done in under 10 mins, that’s including prep. A calf is indeed removed, generally as soon as possible, sometimes when it has sucked and sometimes the mother is milked for the calf to be fed with a bottle. Dairy cows are sometimes distressed by this, but as a whole, these cows are bred to milk and not bred for maternal ability and are much less aggrieved than say a beef cow would be. Therefore, most cows are extremely accepting, in particular those who have previously calved/when the calf is quickly removed before bonding occurs. Calves quickly bond with other calves and the human that feeds them, and I might add, with no calf bawling back to her, anyone who knows anything about livestock knows that these cows do not ‘scream for days’ for their calves. The removal of a calf from its mother is required so that that milk can be consumed by humans. I am not ethically trying to persuade you in either way, what you choose to do is your business. It is important to note that because these cows have been bred to produce enormous quantities of milk, if a cow was to suckle a calf, there is no way the calf could consume all of it, which could potentially lead to problems, chiefly mastitis (painful inflammation of the udder). Not to mention the pain of a large, heavy udder full of milk. This is why cows enjoy being milked, it relieves them of that ‘full’ feeling. Cows which are robotically milked actively go to the robot to express.   Now to the calf, this is also another reason AI is used- so that ‘sexed semen’ i.e mainly consisting of female sperm cells can be used to give a much larger number of heifers, reducing the numbers of bull calves. I know of very very few calves that get ‘shot and tossed in the bin’. Why? Because, why would we? Bull calves are a valuable source of revenue to dairy farms, strong calves are sold to rearing farms/are reared on surplus milk and eventually fattened. You would only need to go to any livestock market in the country and see evidence of these animals sold in store and fat rings. ‘Delaying their death for veal’ is ridiculous, they are livestock, reared to extremely high welfare standards and whether you like it or not are reared for food, the ethics of which I do not plan on debating. Now onto cow housing, cows are housed for around 6 months a year because we have this thing called winter, where the grass stops growing, it is cold and unpleasant. Would you like to live outside all winter? ‘Zero grazing’ systems are niche, and whilst I don’t want to get into the ins and outs of it, they are generally state of the art, incredibly high welfare systems, because they invest so much money into cow comfort. But again, it is up to you on the ethics of whether cows should summer outside or not. Right, we will get this straight: IN THE UK, MILK FROM COWS TREATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS IS DISCARDED AND NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.  The hormone BST can be given to cows to boost production, but it is BANNED in EU. These chemicals are NOT in our food chain. Therefore, why would a farmer give his cows antibiotics and hormones to produce more milk, if that milk could only end up in the bin? Farmers are tested extremely regularly for this, and would lose their milk payments and ultimately their contracts if their milk was testing positive. Some hormones are present in the milk because the milk comes from a cow who is either pregnant or cycling. These are in very small amounts and as they are bovine hormones, they are not believed to have a great effect on us.  Secondly a farmer cannot force a cow to ‘carry’ milk, could you ‘force’ your wife to produce more breast milk? Don’t be silly. So these cows have been bred to produce large quantities, but there’s nothing ‘forced’ about it, that is the genetics of that cow.   The average lifespan of a dairy cow is around 5-6 years. Longevity is something many dairy farmers are working extremely hard to improve on. It is lower in certain breeds than others, and with the explosion in cross bred genetics I think this number can only rise. I won’t lie, for the last 30+ years production has been king, in my opinion this has been detrimental to some animals (i.e the extreme) but give them credit, dairy farmers have adapted and are moving towards a more balanced, sustainable and economical animal. A heifer born today, will be around two years old when she has her first calf, so this is a slow process and cannot be quickly changed.   The fact the cows at the end of their production go to slaughter is accepted fact. Really you shouldn’t be consuming animal products if you’re not aware and appreciative of this. We also have laws protecting animals in transport i.e how much room they can have, and their handling at slaughter. Most cows in the UK would be pre-stunned, and so would not be conscious at bleeding.   I call this a defence of the dairy industry, but really it is not. The industry speaks for itself, go to any farm and they will actively be disproving these lies every single day. There are much easier ways to make a living than getting up at 4am, but they do it because they love their animals and are proud of the product they produce.

Recently I stumbled upon a firm based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, that calls itself Pancreum, "The Wearable Artificial Pancreas Company." Wow. Really? There is such a thing already? I just had to investigate.

The company's website describes a four-part system including a controller (PDA), a CGM sensor called the "GlucoWedge," a small wireless insulin pump called the "BetaWedge," a small wireless glucagon pump called the "AlphaWedge," and a set of "iPancreum" software apps that manage these components and allow for storing and graphing data results. This seems like an incredibly ambitious undertaking for a tiny unknown outfit.

The first thing I did was ping Aaron Kowalski, who heads up JDRF's Artificial Pancreas Project, but he had never heard of this company, so that put me off a bit. Is Pancreum for real?

Turns out that Pancreum's Co-Founder Gil DePaula not only has decades of experience in software engineering and a stint at Medtronic Diabetes working on the Guardian RT system under his belt, but also spent 5 years at Insulet Corp., where he worked together with Marc Anderson, JDRF's Manager of New Technology. Pancreum is currently made up of Gil and a handful of contractors.

I had a call with Gil last week to learn more about the company, which also boasts on the website that users will be able to control the Pancreum system directly from "your own hand-held iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, Windows Mobile SmartPhone, BlackBerry, Palm or Linux devices."

"We are creating all three wearable devices that make up an artificial pancreas (plus) the handheld controller, which is mainly software and can be run from a PDA or smartphone. The three wearable items are an insulin pump, continuous glucose monitor, and glucagon pump — which is different from what others are doing because there's no commercial 'predicate device' yet for glucagon delivery," Gil says.

"Our system will physically look different than anything you've seen before, and will be configurable in a way that you can use the pieces separately. You can mix and match the three components based on your preferences. The controller will automatically recognize whether you're wearing the CGM and insulin pump only, or the insulin pump and glucagon pump, etc."

"All three devices together will take the space of maybe two OmniPods at the most," Gil adds. "Obviously they can't be next to each other on the body. Think of a circle (or disk) with the diameter of two pods. Three devices will lie on the outside of the circle, at the three points furthest apart, say 4 inches from each other. Our system is going to be flexible, not solid, for comfort and wearability. There's a key technology element that makes all of this possible, but I can't disclose that yet because the patent is not yet ready."

Does the word "Wedge" in the product names imply some sort of triangle shape? Gil doesn't deny this, but says he can't elaborate just yet. He also can't yet share any sketches or visuals other than the "guts" above - darn!

What he does talk about are other big advantages of this enterprising project: lower cost than competing pumps and CGMs, and the ability to use this system "plug-and-play" style with other products on the market. Interoperable diabetes components at last? No way!

Yes, he says, Pancreum hopes to provide an open platform of specs that other companies can develop to, allowing interoperability. In other words, the Pancreum PDA would be able to control your own "custom artificial pancreas" that might be made up of the OmniPod and a Minimed CGMS, along with a glucagon pump from a third provider. The Pancreum algorithm will be the "gatekeeper" that controls all three.

Gil has applied for several patents, and is currently stumping for venture capitalist funding, he tells me. He's in the process of creating working prototypes now, but has made a conscious decision not to approach JDRF until the company is funded and further along. "If you present just an idea, it's worth X. If you have a prototype, it's maybe worth 3X. And if you can show more, it's worth 10X," he explains.

They're planning to roll out the components one at a time, starting with the CGM. "We need to sell that to investors first," Gil says.

Even if Pancreum gets the funding it needs this year, it will be another 2-3 years down the road before anything would be ready for market.

That's not surprising. But what about getting past the FDA with a system that can automatically shut off insulin delivery, reduce it, or initiate glucagon delivery? (With the glucagon pump, you won't have to rely on temp basals to decrease insulin delivery when you go low!)

"With the FDA, when everything is automatic, they fear software bugs. And so do we. We're human," Gil says. "They don't like the automatic shut-off, but we believe that with the glucagon pump portion, it changes things. It can raise your glucose level fast and efficiently. Sure, if your glucose level is raised to 250, you'll maybe get upset. But it's better than plunging down to 20."

Other companies, like Medtronic, are also working on commercializing glucagon pumps, Gil says. What will they look like? Possibly very much like insulin patch pumps. But the cannula may differ greatly. "It depends on the viscosity and corrosion of each liquid," Gil says. If you say so.

If you're like me, you'll find this stuff exciting. Just make it work, Engineers and Medical Experts — oh pleeeeaaaase! I realize it can be hard to hear about early-stage companies whose innovations are still far off. But think of the alternative... And with that I say: Thank you, Gil.

Planet Of The Apes/Green Lantern Writers Share Secrets From the First Issue

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for “Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern” #1, on sale now.

Two of the most storied sci-fi franchises in history crashed into each other in comics stores this week with the release of “Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern” #1, a time-spanning adventure from BOOM! Studios and DC Comics.

The companies looked to “Silk” scribe Robbie Thompson to plot the book, former “Green Lantern: New Guardians” writer Justin Jordan to script it and “The Omega Men” artist Barnaby Bagenda to draw it. The results find Sinestro creating an amazing new ring that traveled forward through time to the version of Earth seen in the original “Planet of the Apes.” Taking place roughly between the 1968 classic and its 1970 sequel “Beneath the Planet of the Apes,” Hal Jordan winds up on the future Earth and must figure out what to do about this new, dangerous ring.

To get the low-down on the first issue of this high-flying story, CBR talked to Jordan and Thompson about setting the stage, creating the weapon and Captain Taylor’s whereabouts.

CBR: The most successful crossovers are able to bring the best parts of two different franchises together and make something that feels organic to both. What were the key aspects of Green Lantern and “Planet of the Apes” that you knew would facilitate that?

Justin Jordan: A lot of what’s going on in “Apes” is about power and control, if you look at the film series as a whole. At first in trying to control Taylor and, by limiting the flow of information, the apes themselves. And this expands as the series [continues].

The Green Lantern franchise is about, at least in part, power and justice. These are people who are given the most powerful weapon in the universe with the instruction to do good. Sinestro, for instance, is what happens when you twist the justice part.

So, I think there’s a pretty natural — although not necessarily obvious — connection there. In both cases, you’re looking at the use of power and resisting the temptations that come along with it. That’s why will is important to the Green Lanterns. That gave us a pretty good hook for how to treat the story and how to make sure it felt relevant to both of the properties.

Was it difficult figuring out exactly when this story would take place so that it wouldn’t get too complicated on either side?

Jordan: Robbie and [Editor] Dafna [Pleban] did most of the heavy lifting there. The story is out of continuity, so we had some wiggle room, but we were very conscientious to make sure it fits in a place where everything that had happened up to the point of divergence happened in the story.

We do know exactly when this takes place in the Apes timeline, and that led to a lot of re-watching the movies to be clear on who knew or did what when. You don’t need to know that stuff to read the story, but if you’re familiar with the Green Lantern or Apes mythos, it adds to the story.

Robbie Thompson: Dafna was instrumental in finding the best moment to dip into the Apes timeline. We were looking for the right spot to drop in to tell our own story, but still honor the original franchise, as well as the closed time loop aspect of those movies. We really wanted to make sure we had the best “cast” available to us, which also helped us figure out the best place to start. As a fan of the original movies, I’m really excited where and when this story takes place.

It seems like one of the major themes of the series is finding the will to keep fighting even when exhaustion has taken over. What made that one of the key elements for the story for you as writers?

Jordan: Will is the cornerstone of the Green Lantern stories. It’s why Green Lantern Corps members got the job to begin with. And on the Apes side, Cornelius and Zira are just not willing to give up in the movies. It’s not as overt an act of will, but it’s still them pushing past obstacles through, mostly, not giving up.

And exhaustion has another, more insidious quality. It’s not just that you might want to give up. It’s that it makes you want to take shortcuts. To compromise on things, you might not ordinarily be willing to do. To make you lie to yourself. That quality ties in directly to the overarching idea about the uses and temptations of power.

In the first issue we see Cornelius finding this ring that seems to have the ability to shift colors. What can you tell us about the weapon and the threat it poses?

Jordan: The Universal Ring was, basically, an attempt to create a White Lantern ring. If you’re not familiar with the Green Lantern mythos — and you don’t really need to be to enjoy this — the White Lantern can tap all the powers of the spectrum. This ring though, has some serious side effects, so serious that the Guardians decided to seal it away in the closed loop of the Planet of the Apes timeline. It’s incredibly dangerous, and there’s no good way to use it, as our characters are going to learn.

Thompson: The Universal Ring is incredibly powerful but equally volatile and it was a great vehicle to really push the characters from both properties to their limits. Dafna worked closely with the folks at DC to make sure we had the right fit for the type of ring we were looking for and Justin’s done an amazing job of really making this Ring feel like an integral part of Lantern lore and mythology.

We see Nova in the first issue, but Taylor is nowhere to be found. Will he wind up playing a role as the story continues?

Jordan: The “Where’s Taylor?” question is answered, very definitively, in issue two. You can probably guess, if you’re familiar with the movies, by the end of issue one.

In addition to Barnaby Bagenda’s excellent interior art, this book also has covers by the likes of George Pérez, Ethan Van Sciver and Felipe Massafera. What’s it like seeing these artists contributing to a story you wrote?

Jordan: It doesn’t suck! More seriously, I’ve been a big fan of Barnaby’s for a while. His run on “Omega Men” was tremendous, and it was super cool to be able to work with him. If I weren’t already sold on the idea of working on Planet of the Apes, his involvement as an artist alone would have been enough.

Thompson: It’s been mind-blowing. Dafna and [co-editor] Alex [Galer] have assembled an unbelievable art crew for this book. Barnaby Bagenda is amazing and has such a great handle on both franchises. And Ethan Van Sciver is a Lantern legend! His cover was one of the first images I saw of the book and I was blown away. Felipe Massafera’s covers are so iconic and perfect. And that George Pérez connecting cover is absolutely epic. I can’t wait to have every cover in my hands!
