“Welcome to The Game” is a puzzle horror game developed by Reflect Studios, founded by Adam Flatau.
The game is a first person point and click style game in which the player explores The Deep Web in search of a Red Room. An urban legend, an illegal category of livestream which depicts real, real time murder.
Throughout the game, the deeper the player gets into searching the deep web, the more enemies begin to appear. Characters such as the Kidnapper, the Breather and the FBI have chances to end the player’s game if they player makes the wrong moves.
The Kidnapper appears when the player ventures too far into the deep web for too long, causing the Kidnapper to have found the player’s location and identity and kidnap them. The Kidnapper wears a mask to keep his identity hidden, having no identifiable features other than his eyes. This makes his appearance off putting and uncanny, making the player uncomfortable when looking at him. Along with this, his arrival results in an instant game over.
His masked appearance forces the player to rethink how they play the game, as to not lure him into their room by accident and be led into a game over. As well as this, because he makes an instant game over, the player has to hide in the shadows of their home if they hear his presence, and stay completely still. Additionally, Welcome to The Game has a microphone sensitivity feature, meaning the Kidnapper can hear your every word.
This again is a great way of getting the player to think logically about what they do in the game, to not even move or talk. The fact the player has to stay completely silent is a great way of producing a scare factor, as loud jumpscares can happen at any time from other characters.
Having a character with only visible eyes can make them intimidating, or it can make them look lifeless. However, this type of mask isn’t one I’d like to include in my work since I want them to appear less scary.
Another character in Welcome to The Game is the Breather, a killer who preys on the player for browsing the Deep Web.
The Breather is also a masked character, but more of his face is visible and his expressions are clear. It has been speculated the Breather may be using drugs of some kind due to his widely opened eyes, which make him much more off putting to look at. When it comes to the Breather, he rarely speaks, and only talks when he is closing in on the player. Any other time, he is breathing heavily into the player’s phone.
The chances of him appearing depend on the number of “Keys” to the red room the player has found, increasing up to a maximum of a 55% chance of appearing every day in game.
Characters who only can express emotion through eye movements are very creative, and allow lots of room for body expression and shape language in a character’s design. I really like the idea of having a character with no mouth, and no speech. It could create an interesting story as to why they can’t speak, and it leaves more room for using facial expression such as eyebrow and forehead movement rather than their speech. Even characters with the inability to speak follow this concept.

“One of YouTube's top gaming content creators, Markiplier, dedicated several livestreams to his staunch attempts to beat the game, and during the sixth and final one, climaxed with him personally insulting the developer, Adam Flatau, and unintentionally sending a mob of his 20+ million subscriber base after him over Twitter.”
