Try as Meena Raja might, but, ever since she was a little girl, it felt nearly impossible not to seem like an imposter in her own skin. She barely had any recollection of her birth father, but the first thing she ever remembered being told was how she was the spitting image of him. She had his overly expressive eyes, the same slight up tilt of a smile and they both possessed an infectious laugh that was practically physical. Their shoulders would shake as they both would toss back their heads and an almost musical sense of mirth would flow out of them. Apparently, that’s how he had been when she had been born. The embodiment of happiness during the Thottil ceremony when they chosen her name, recited it three times each and drew it out on a platter of rice. And yet, as much as she wanted to believe the stories her mother would speak of him, she had been born cynical and couldn’t imagine the man whom had slipped out of their lives quicker than sand being someone to write home about. But, even if the stories about him being some foreign bollywood star were no more than outlandish fairytales her mother crafted rather than having to admit he had been an already married man whom had a family of his own and could care less about them, those epic tales of the father she’d never know set a high bar to live up to.

Danika Raja might not have been the crisp and clean catalogue version of the perfect mother. She was the type who always wore her clothes cut just a smidge lower than she should. The type who passed flirtatious looks at the electrician to get the ‘friends and family’ discount when it came down to the bill and sweet-talked the restaurants into giving her extra gulab jamun on the way home. She was the type of of woman who knew what she wanted, had her eyes set on a life far greater than her circumstances and, as at a loss as she often seemed when it came to raising her daughter, hoped she could at least provide her with a life that worth fantasying about and she did, after a lot of sweat and hard work.

That was where the Montoyas came in. He was a man far older than Danika, but one whom had money practically flowing out of his pockets and had a type for young pretty little things such as her mother. It didn’t take long for her mother to lock the man down and introduce her six-year-old little girl to her new and quite lofty home in New York. With two rowdy stepbrothers to keep her entertained and an endless amount of presents showering in, Danika was convinced that little Meena would now have everything she could possibly need in life. Only, Mimi suddenly seemed more clingy than ever. The shy child peeking around the corner or tugging on that of her next step father’s leg as if pleading for him to notice her, to pat her head or pick her up.

Meena had been afraid of most other kids. It took her weeks to warm up to her own brothers and that was only after much convincing on their part and, when it came to classmates, she would have rather hid off in some corner with a good book than to attempt a conversation. But, when it came to the man in the Raja girls’ lives, Meena couldn’t help, but be desperate for his approval. She wanted him to like her. But, more than that, to be proud of her. She wanted to be a good student, get good grades, and stay out of trouble. She wanted to prove to her mother that they didn’t need the fantasy that filled her biological father’s absence no more.

Only, one night, their father had gone off with her mother to one of the coven’s many parties. One of the few topics of conversation that were treated in the highest forms of regard in their household and while her brothers had used the opportunity of their parents being away for the night to sneak out, Meena had found herself wanting to take a peek in. She would have probably gone unnoticed too, if her feet hadn’t screeched to a halt at the sound of a piercing scream. She recognized it almost instantly. It was a scream of another coven kid, Leo, as Logan tried to make a run for it. But, before Meena could do anything, the Hastings children were knocked unconscious and carried off into the night.

The unforgettable look of horror that pulled across her mother’s face as Meena came screaming into the party, clutching Logan’s necklace tightly in hand, was one she would never forget. Only, what Meena could have sworn would be the look of appreciated the nine-year-old had so desperately craved from her step father for discovering that the Hastings children were in danger, was no more than a brush of a hand as he pulled away from her and told his driver to take her home and keep her out of trouble. The anger and worry directed at the little girl who disobeyed her parents orders, was set on the sights of Richard Hastings. Richard’s powers quickly stripped before he was sentenced to immediate death for nearly sacrificing that of his own children. Only the man escaped. Reeling from what happened that night, the mothers made a pact to watch out for the children and make sure to prevent any knowledge of that night from ever getting back to them.

Photos of Richard were removed, records locked away, the baby’s mother exiled from the coven and any reference Meena tried to make was quickly hushed or brushed over. Whenever she tried to bring the topic up with Leo or Logan, it would be as if they had forgotten their entire playdate the next day, and although the Montoyas refused to erase the memories of that of their own daughter, it wasn’t as if the pretty gift she’d receive on her bed side table out of the blue the next morning would make the feeling of isolation and the inevitable questioning of her own perception of reality any easier. Maybe that’s why her mother had decided to enroll her into an acting class, growing more and more worried about her soft spoken girl who would rather smile through her lips than show the tiniest flash of teeth.

And oh did Meena take to acting. The game of pretend was practically second nature for the girl whose new family grew up skirting around their issues and pretending nothing was ever wrong and, by the time she reached high school, she had finally gotten her first role and it was the role of a lifetime. Not the type of film her peers would be watching. It had been one of those eclectic, serious award winning films. The Montoyas had come from old money and preferred their business out of the spotlight. They viewed the start of her career as nothing more than a fun and childish hobby and, yet, when she was nominated for Best Support Actress, her step-father took notice. It was one of the highlights of Meena’s life. She didn’t even care that she hadn’t won. She was a somebody, she had earned new family’s respect and could officially feel like she was one of them (even if they had always viewed her as such along) and she road the high of her success when she came back to school that fall. Suddenly having a far-less desire to be the sweet good girl who kept to herself. Instead, she found herself playing the role of the attention-seeking little miss popular. She became a cheerleader and a flirt. She drew people in with a breathless smile and lived her life pretending not to have a care in the world unless it pertained to that of practicing her magic and, if god forbid something upset her, she would shop until she dropped. Her unlimited black card provided by the family gave her a dangerous sense of comfort that brought her mother and brothers’s spending habits to shame. Finally, she was truly fitting into the Montoya’s name.

Only little did she know, her life was about to change drastically. All her life, her parents had been firm backers for the coven. So much so that her brothers and her would even joke that the supreme lived more at their place than she did her own with that of her own family. But, what the Montoya children were kept unaware of, was the extent their seemingly distant father went to as to protect them. He had never been for the memory tampering potions nor had he been for the treatment of Charlotte Jane, the woman whom was chased out of the coven when her daughter, the youngest Hastings, had been stolen away. But, as the loyal man that he was, he went along with the Supreme’s call and the other Hastings children’s mothers decisions when it came down to their own family. The situation didn’t involve him or so he convinced himself momentarily into believing. But, that was until Meena was slipped a potion herself after returning home for hanging out with one of the Hastings. He recognized the signs almost instantaneously. The hazy look in her gaze as she attempted to recall what she had been up to that day only for her mind to draw a blank. All of those years, he held her at a distance, shrugging off her curiosity and letting her in turn question her own reality and, yet, now he was on the other side of things. A pang sharp within his chest at the thought of what he must have put his children through, having crucial memories in their life be erased from those around them as if it was nothing.

It was the last straw that broke the camel’s back for him. That night as he was heading home in his black car with Meena’s mother in the backseat beside him, he called the Supreme and informed his once dear friend that she had twenty-four hours to come clean about the corruption of the coven to the council or he would do it for her. Only, his car never made it home that night. In the morning, the papers would speak of a tragic accident that happened on the ride home to one of Manhattan’s elite.

After the funeral, Meena needed a change of pace. She turned down the serious films she had planning on taking. The thought of having to force herself to cry over and over again in front of a camera when she was still grieving sounded too much for her to bare. So, when a script for a hit YA novel fell into her lap, she signed her name on the contract. Low and behold, she’d spend the next five years filming a one of the most success and borderline humiliating trilogies. Either people loved it or hated it, but that had certainly seen her in and, after that, the endless scripts she used to receive quickly became narrowed into an all too specific type cast. A few more rom coms- some good, some utterly - tragic on her resume and, the next thing she knew, the only role she was being offered was for that of holiday movies or a soap. She took the soap. At least it was being filmed back home.

So, back to New York, Meena went, following the suit of her brothers and falling more and more into an excessive lifestyle with over the top spending habits to mask her family’s blatant denial of the past and where they all had ended up and that would have been the end of things too.The three rich kids turned rich adults as they continued to live their lives without ever truly communicating. That is if a child of their fathers they have never known they had, hadn’t shown up on their doorstep to try to claim some portion of their family’s inheritance. The kid was still in high school with no family of their own and no real place to go. Meena’s eldest brother was convinced she was some con artist trying to weasel her way into the family, while her other brother hardly felt the want to extend a helping hand, and it wasn’t as if Meena was exactly the most charitable herself, but before she knew it, she found herself being talked into letting the young adult, practically still a teenager, temporarily crash on her couch. Only a week quickly turned into a month and a month turned into a year and before Meena knew it, she was her little sister’s official legal guardian.

She had always thought if she was parent, she would be the type ot give them attention rather than throw money and presents at them like her parents had done with her. And yet, as the saying goes, like mother, like daughter, Meena didn’t know the slightest thing what she was doing and it showed. She was barely focused on set and within a year, she was fired from the soap and killed off in some dramatic fashion. She had gone from Oscar nominee to washed up soap star in under a decade and she hated the fact that she had seemingly managed to ruin her career and, even more, the fact that being in front of a camera just wasn’t the same when she no longer had a father she had been acting, in a way, for.

When she was asked to step into the role of temporary supreme and then advisor, the decision seemed like a no brainer. Out of all of the wrong choices in her life, taken on the role her father loved so much seemed like the perfect way to honor him and maybe finally close the door to that chapter of her life. Only unbeknownst to her, just like him, she became the firm’s pawn agreeing to do small favors for them until she found herself giving up piece after piece of her morality. Even after she finally discovered what had happened to her old man, she still found herself playing the role of watcher, because, as strong of a witch as she was, she was still that hopeless and useless little girl inside who didn’t know what she truly could do? Only when the truth was bound to come out, did she inevitable fess up and loose her girlfriend, the new Supreme, in the process. Now, Meena is trying to focus on family for a change. She spends most of her time with her brothers and sister and in terms of acting, she still dabbles in it here and there- playing a dead body in one of the many crime shows in the city, performing in an off-broadway play or attending a con to see her still all-too loyal and adoring fans. But, Meena spends more time behind the screen of her phone and behind a black card than she does in front of a camera. The fear of ruining or loosing yet another thing she loves and the million voices at all times in her head, preventing her from stepping back out into the spotlight.

Madhumitha started her acting career under her birth name Swapna Madhuri with the 2002 Telugu filmSandade Sandadi (2002) doing a pivotal supporting role. She continued playing supporting roles in a couple of Telugu films like Manmadhudu (2002) along with Akkineni Nagarjuna and Sonali Bendre, Ammailu Abbailu (2003) and Puttintiki Ra Chelli (2004) sharing screen space with Arjun and Meena, with the latter in particular becoming a high commercial success, running for 275 days in theatres.(1) She then got introduced to the Tamil film industry by R. Parthiban in his film Kudaikul Mazhai (2004), enacting the lead female role and changing her screen name to Madhumitha, named after her character in the film.

Though the film wasn't a major success,(1) Madhumitha received several offers from Tamil directors. She played leading roles in several Tamil films like Amudhey (2005), Englishkaran (2005) opposite Sathyaraj and Namitha. She was appreciated for her performance in Englishkaran.
