Ace Attorney Ivestigations 2
So uh, yeah spoilers for the game, but both Investigation games have been so amazing! Especially the last case in the second game! I’ll put the rest under a read more for spoilers for the game and characters.
The first, second, and fourth cases were amazing set ups for this last trial. While I’m sure the third has some significance as well, I want to focus on these three for now.
The first case had the fake assassination attempt, along with Horace Knightly killing his coworker. Even with it being the obligatory set up mission, it was still so heavy with story stuff. Shelly De Killer, an assassin who was hired by an unknown person, was set up to kill the president himself. But he had left the scene and told Edgeworth that he was set up to kill a fake target. At the end of it all, Knightly’s murder was uncovered and he was arrested.
He gets taken to the detention center but is found dead when Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and Kay were supposed to meet with him to discuss the case. Once they hear of his murder, they run to the prison to find out more. The prison is also where they meet three new people who would be prominent through the game: Raymond Shields who was Gregory Edgeworth’s, Mile’s father, assistant and now a defense attorney as well. Justine Courtney, a judge and also a member of the Prosecutorial Investigations Committee, and Sebastian Debeste, a new “prodigy” among prosecutors. The person I want to focus on is Sebastian, but that will be a bit later, though at the beginning he’s rather incompetent and a bit forgetful to the other characters.
During this case, it was discovered that the prison’s warden, Patrica Roland, was the culprit and was stripped of her title, being put behind bars herself. Though there was one other note worthy suspect, Dogen the blind assassin. It was found that he was playing chess through the mail with Knightly before he was killed. At the point I’m at now, he is missing and so it’s interesting to see where it will lead.
The fourth case, a member of the PIC and a defense attorney in her own right was killed, and the blame was pinned on Kay who had also lost her memories, becoming an amnesiac for a time. Throughout the last cases, Judge Courtney had been threatening Edgeworth to take his prosecutor’s badge and title from him as he was under scrutiny for how he conducted his investigations. During this case, however, he gave it up himself since the prosecutor’s path was blocking his way to finding the truth and helping Kay get off the murder charge.
Eventually, the real truth came out, that Blaise Debeste, Sebastian’s father and chairman of the PIC, was the one that killed the victim. He tried worming his way out of it by showing his true feelings about Sebastian, revealing that he had paid all of the teachers to give him “The Best” grades while he was going through school to become a prosecutor, all to drive Sebastian away as acting prosecutor in the case. It all was for not though as Edgeworth and company had revealed everything, shutting the case as Blaise awaited trial.
The last story is bringing everything nicely together. Edgeworth still doesn’t have his badge, Shelly de Killer told him both that his target was a fake and that his client deceived him and also that Dogen had gotten out of prison, Sebastian had still trusted his father enough to give him the decisive evidence against Warden Roland and he had thrown it away to get her a not guilty verdict, as the victim of the fourth case was supposed to be on Roland’s defense team Ray had taken over. After Sebastian ran away in tears from being told that Blaise had paid his teachers, making that he hadn’t achieved any of that work on his own, he was kidnapped by Blaise’s men by mistake as they were wanting to take Judge Courtney’s son, who was taken by a mysterious figure in a red hood who was also the one who brought Kay to the roof top of the Grand Tower.
Now what I want to focus on is Sebastian’s story arc. Throughout the game since the second case he’s been depicted as being dumb, not using the right words, and missing whole sections of evidence and testimony. Unreliable all around. But then, we get to the end of the fourth case where Blaise admits that he just never liked him, his own father. That he chose to pay off teachers and such rather than help his son really learn. Sebastian was sheltered, becoming a pawn that Blaise could manipulate in court basically.
Sebastian was understandably hurt by it all, being called worthless over and over, an idiot. But after talking with Edgeworth, he begins to realize. He first took the prosecutor’s path so he could gain Blaise’s approval, but then now, when he’s had to face the man who raised him all these years, calling him both a killer and someone who’s hidden evidence, it hurt. By Edgeworth’s gentle understanding and pushing, he’s able to find his own path, determine his own future, which surpasses Blaise in becoming a different kind of prosecutor. It’s just, such an amazing character arc. Even as he cried, he stood firm in facing against his father who probably abused him for years. The first time he’s ever stood up against him.
I’m not done, still have six episodes to go in the lp that I’m watching of this case, but I just needed to get this down. I will also talk about Gregory Edgeworth, Ray, and Miles more in another post.

the confetti for a not guilty verdict is actually the funniest fucking thing about ace attorney
it’s like they inherently know their system is fucked to the to the extent that they’ve got the celebration confetti at the ready when they don’t wrongfully incarcerate someone
edgeworth never lost a trial until he faced phoenix wright so the confetti goes off and he’s probably like what the fuck ppfthh pffth phhh that last bit is him spitting the confetti out of his mouth
