Duke is a prince and Jason and Tim are his knights/bodyguards who snuck into his bedroom at midnight for cuddles and kisses 🥺💖

Heya💕💕💕 I hope this counts, considering Tim is asleep for the entire story 😅

"How did I end up being the cautious one?" Jason asks.

There’s no answer. Somewhere, Bruce is spinning in his cave.

Tim and Duke don’t reply because Tim and Duke are passed out on Duke’s rather enormous bed. Jason wishes he could do that. Technically, he’s not on duty—though of course he always is; that’s how being a personal guard works.

He’s just too wound up. Those rogues got way too close today. If Jason didn’t return when he did…

He looks down, strokes the soft skin where Duke’s neck gracefully slopes into his shoulder, and inexplicably feels close to tears.

"Every day, I love you more and more," Jason whispers, and it isn’t a sweet confession. It’s sheer panic, suppressed only by the quiet of the moment.

Jason knows fear. Unlike Tim, who is noble-born and practically had to beg his parents to become a lowly knight in the king’s guard, Jason has worked his way up here, miles beyond what his station in life is supposed to be. He’s had more brushes with death than even he is comfortable joking about.

This, though, is the fear of loving. The fear of losing. Of being loved, and being lost, too.

It was bad enough when it was just Tim. Duke? He’s in line for the throne. Sure, he might never be king, but there’re only one or two convenient (devastating) deaths between him and absolute power. He’ll have to marry soon. Father children. Move on and leave his loyal guards behind.

Duke won’t want to do that, but he will. Tim will swallow down his feelings. Jason knows himself too well to think he’ll manage to do the same. And then—that’ll be the end of him and Tim, too, if they even make it that long, and—

"Come back to bed."

Jason looks down into large brown eyes. "I am in bed."

"Go to sleep, then."

"Can’t."

Duke yawns and sits up, gently disentangling himself from Tim. (That man can turn into a leech at a moment’s notice.) "Do we need to talk about this?"

"Nah." Nothing they could do to change what would happen, after all.

"Good, cause I’m way too tired for whatever your brain came up with this time." Duke grins that roguish grin Jason spent months telling himself he doesn’t love. "If talking’s out, I suppose we’ll just have to tire you out."

Tim chooses that moment to start snoring. Jason raises an eyebrow. "You and who?"

"Me, then," Duke amends. "Will that be enough for you, Master Todd?"

A mouth that can kiss like that really has no business sounding so dry. Jason decides he’d rather shut Duke up and pounces. (Gently.) Duke goes down with so much grace (and giggles) that Jason suspects that was His Royal Highnesses‘ plan the entire time.

Oh well.

Come morning light, the world will be sweet again. Tim will wake up grumpy because he’s not used to getting so much sleep. Duke will wake up grumpy because he’s not used to getting so little sleep. Jason will wake up grumpy cause he’s Jason.

A bath will take care of most of that. After, they’ll dress Duke in silk and purples (to better cover his bruises). Tim and Jason will get suited up; Tim’s clever fingers adjusting Jason’s armor; Jason’s strong one checking Tim’s bow for stress fractures.

And then they’ll step outside, a prince and his bodyguards once more.

Jason tells himself he finds comfort in that thought and sinks into Duke’s kiss.
