I feel like the best way to "fix" Padme in the Prequels isn't to have Anakin brainwashing her, but to just have her be morally corrupt from at least the start of AOTC. In TPM, she's a scared young Queen, she's trying so hard to be peaceful and diplomatic and it DOESN'T WORK and she has to turn to violence and war to save her own people. She's not who she used to be anymore.
So when you start up AOTC, Anakin makes his interest known sort-of accidentally and Padme is immediately intrigued. There's none of that "Oh Ani, you'll always be that little boy I knew from Tatooine" stuff, let her follow up on the "Wow you've grown" comment just a tad more, comment on how impressive he looks now, nearly a Knight himself! And in the packing scene, instead of calmly explaining that sometimes mentors see our flaws better than we'd like, have her agree that Obi-Wan's treatment sounds frustrating perhaps, she can relate it to her own struggles in the Senate with other politicians who just won't LISTEN TO HER. In response, Anakin says that at least this new mission means he'll be away from Obi-Wan and spending time with Padme alone which sounds so much more enjoyable. Padme asks him how much more enjoyable and, well, things can devolve from there. Fade to black or just a kiss and a promise to follow up on Naboo or something, doesn't matter.
And you can let Anakin question why she's doing it or something if you want, bring up that it should be forbidden for them to be together and that Padme is risking a lot by doing this with him. Give Padme a nice simple answer here. Something like "I learned when my planet was attacked that life can be so short and sometimes the best way forward is to act decisively. I know what I want, and I'm willing to take the risk, because this feels worth it to me, it feels right." Nothing too deep and it brings up a little sympathy from the last film.
At the lake scene in the rainbow dress, bring back the comment Padme made in that deleted scene from their arrival on Naboo where she mentions she had expected to have a family by now, but with everything going on in the Senate she isn't sure that'll ever happen. Instead of "I hate sand" (yes yes I know) let Anakin RELATE to Padme's musings on her desire for a family, mention how he'd always kind-of wanted a child of his own, how important family is to him and while the Jedi ARE a family, it's not the kind of family he knew and grew up with and sometimes he misses it.
Come back to her frustrations with the Senate during the meadow scene on Naboo, let her admit that sometimes she DOES wish she could just force them all to listen to her even though she knows that that would lead to more problems than it would fix, so when she brushes off Anakin's dictatorship comment as a joke, it makes a LOT more sense that she would think that way.
And then for a more modern fix-it, have Anakin NOT murder all of the Tuskens, just the warriors, but he admits that he nearly did kill them all, that he wanted to, and a part of him still wants to return to the village and finish what he started even if it's not the Jedi way. It's still violent, and still a horrifying red flag, but this allows Padme to decides that Anakin's feelings are more important than the lives he took (and almost took). It's less out of character because she's been stupid for him from literally the start, they've been probably fucking since they got to Naboo, she's already compromising on her own morals for him, why not do it again?
Is this my ideal Padme? No. My ideal Padme is much more complex than this, but that Padme cannot exist in the story they were telling in the Prequels, so the best way to have Padme exist more easily in the Prequels without completely changing the story for her is to just simplify her down a lot.

“Aim for the heart, but spare the face”
The 4th and final part of my narrative of Murat’s last days. (Part 1: Murat’s Fateful Decision) (Part 2: The Capture of Murat) (Part 3: Prelude to a Show Trial)
***
The commission chosen to enact the farcical trial of Murat convened on the 13th of October. A Sicilian named Captain Starace was to selected to serve as Murat’s advocate, and pleaded with Murat to change his mind about appearing in front of his judges to defend himself. Murat replied that the members of the court were not judges, but executioners; he ordered Starace to say nothing in his defense. Shortly after, the commission sent in a rapporteur to interrogate Murat, asking him his name, age, and homeland. Murat angrily declared: “I am Joachim, King of the Two Sicilies; get out, Monsieur!”
The trial concluded around four o’clock in the afternoon. He was unanimously found guilty, ironically on the basis of a law regarding insurrection which he had enacted himself in June of 1810. Murat received the news of his death sentence with, writes the Marquis de Sassenay, “a disdainful calm.” The sentence was to be carried out, he was told, in a quarter of an hour. He was permitted to write a final letter to his wife and children.
My dear Caroline,
My last hour has come; in a few moments I shall have ceased to exist; you will no longer have a husband, and my children will have no father. Never forget me; my life has not been tainted by any injustice. Farewell my Achille, farewell my Letitia, farewell my Lucien, farewell my Louise; show yourselves to the world worthy of me. I leave you without kingdom and without property, in the midst of my numerous enemies; be constantly united, show yourselves superior to misfortune, think of what you are and of what you have been, and God will bless you. Do not curse my memory. Know that my greatest pain, in the last moments of my life, is to die far away from my children.
Receive my paternal blessing; receive my kisses and my tears. Always have present in your memory your unfortunate father.

[Murat writes his final letter, by Jacques Onfroy de Bréville]
Into the envelope along with the letter, he placed several locks of his hair.
Completing this final task, he was met by Canon Masdea, the septuagenarian priest to whom Murat had bequeathed some money for the San Giorgio church two years prior. The priest prevailed upon Murat to sign a written declaration stating that he was dying as a Christian. He also managed to persuade Murat to make confession, standing firm on the matter when the officer on guard attempted to object due to a lack of time.
“Let us go,” Murat declared after receiving absolution, “and God’s will be done!”
At six o’clock in the evening, he was led out to the narrow courtyard of the castle. He coldly refused both the blindfold and the stool that were offered him. Scarcely ten feet separated him from the twelve-man firing squad. In his hand he held the miniature likenesses of his wife and children, which he now pressed to his chest.
“Soldiers,” he addressed the firing squad calmly, “do your duty. Aim for the heart, but spare the face.”
He gave the order to fire himself.
Tumblr media
Details of the aftermath of the execution vary, with one account claiming three pistol shots were discharged into Murat’s head after he fell, which, if true, is excessive enough to appear as more an act of malice than a standard coup-de-grâce. There seems to be no doubt that he was killed instantly by the firing squad’s volley, fired at such a close range that his body was described as “mutilated.” His body was placed into a plain coffin and buried without ceremony in the yard of the church that had benefitted from his kindness two years earlier. Today a marker lies within the church, commemorating the spot where Murat’s remains are said to rest.
Tumblr media
[Plaque marking Murat’s final resting place in San Giorgio church in Pizzo]
Caroline Murat had received no news of her husband’s whereabouts or well-being in months. Eight days after his execution, she wrote to Catherine, wife of her brother Jerome, that “this uncertainty is becoming unbearable.” Her older sister Elisa learned that Murat had ended up being apprehended in Calabria. Both sisters expressed the hope that he would be allowed to continue his journey from there to Trieste, but Caroline remained riddled with anxiety. “Oh, my dear Elisa,” she wrote, “loss of fortune seems nothing beside the agonies which oppress me and I would be happier completely destitute if I could thereby spare my husband and myself the cruel sufferings… until the hour when he can arrive and I can know him safe.”
The same day that Caroline wrote the letter above—November 2—news of her husband’s execution was printed in the Wiener Zeitung, the newspaper she had taken to reading daily since arriving in Trieste. Her servants endeavored to hide the paper, substituting another in its place; but she insisted on receiving it. It was yielded to her with reluctance. Catherine Davies, an Englishwoman who had served the Murats since 1804, describes the ensuing scene: “Upon reading the account of her husband’s melancholy death, she was attacked with violent fits which lasted until morning. The dear children were asleep, and knew nothing of their mother’s grief, nor of their own loss, till the following day, when seeing every one looking sad around them, Prince Lucien said to my late English companion, ‘Mimie, what is the matter, that you all wear such sorrowful faces: is papa dead?’ She replied she feared he was. At this moment, they all wept bitterly, for they were tenderly attached to their father, and he equally to them.”
While the Bourbon courts in France and Naples rejoiced at the news of Murat’s death, there were many who responded with horror, grief, and anger. General Guglielmo Pépé, who had come to love and admire Murat even in spite of his political differences with his former king, fell into this latter camp. “The tragical death of Joachim,” he writes, “plunged me into the deepest grief, which I only mastered after a long lapse of time: the whole country was horror-stricken by this sad event. Even to this day, when the inhabitants of Pizzo have occasion to travel the kingdom, they carefully conceal the place of their nativity, so great is the stigma it casts upon them.” Lord Byron, who had, years earlier, written a poem about Murat, likewise lamented the legendary cavalier’s sad fate. “Poor, dear Murat, what an end! …. His white plume used to be a rallying point in battle, like Henry IV’s. He refused a confessor and a bandage; so would neither suffer his soul or body to be bandaged.”
Napoleon, arriving on Saint Helena two days after the execution of his brother-in-law, did not receive news of it until months later. Writes Barry O’Meara, who briefly served as Napoleon’s physician on the island, “Some short time after his arrival at Longwood, I communicated to the Emperor the news of Murat’s death. He heard it with calmness, and immediately inquired if he had perished on the field of battle? At first I hesitated to tell him that his brother-in-law had been executed by military law. On his repeating the question, I informed him of the manner in which Murat had been put to death, to which he listened without any change of countenance.” This sangfroid was typical of Napoleon, who disdained outward displays of emotions (except for anger) in front of his subordinates. But his valet, Marchand, who had been with Napoleon longer and knew how to read him better, remarks in his memoirs that “This news had saddened him, and I heard him talking to Dr. O’Meara, which renewed this pain as he spoke. He said nothing of the King of Naples’ wrongs toward him, adding that to go down to Calabria with fifty men was the action of a madman, but those who had ordered his death were monsters.” General Gourgaud, in his diary, describes Napoleon, later in the evening after learning of Murat’s death, as “sad, preoccupied, plays mechanically with some coins during the reading. He suffers, we see it clearly.” Murat would remain a recurring subject of the Emperor’s conversation during his time on Saint Helena. His reflections on his brother-in-law were as conflicted as his feelings towards him had been throughout their relationship, ranging from fond reminiscences of Murat’s battlefield gallantry, to bitterness over his defection in 1814, to ridicule of his outlandish attire and poor judgment. He never ceased to regret Murat’s absence at Waterloo.
It is impossible to know for certain what Murat’s true intentions were as he began taking the road towards Monteleone prior to his arrest in Pizzo. He was indecisive by nature, but also stubborn. As appalling of a prospect as he found the idea of a life in exile in Austria, his desire to be reunited with his family was genuine; his children were never far from his mind. Yet equally abhorrent to him was the idea of living the rest of his life in a state of dishonor, having relinquished, without a fight, a throne he had never abdicated. The accounts of Galvani and Franceschetti both make it clear that his mind changed throughout the journey between Corsica and Calabria, his natural optimism and faith in himself repeatedly overriding the reality of the hopelessness of his original enterprise. Perhaps he truly had resolved to go on to Trieste by the time his party encountered Trentacapilli; if so, this only renders the outcome all the more tragic.
Some historians have theorized that his voyage to Pizzo was a deliberate act of suicide. This ignores not only his repeated insistences that he intended to join his family in Trieste, but also the resistance and attempt to avoid capture he made prior to his apprehension. If Murat was seeking death, he was not seeking it in the manner of a common criminal. He had been a soldier for his entire adult life, and would have preferred to die like one. Upon his return to Naples from his final defeat at Tolentino, where, like Ney at Waterloo, he appears to have been attempting to get himself killed, Murat dolefully remarked to Caroline that he had been unable to meet death.
“Thus,” writes his former aide-de-camp Macirone, “fortune was again adverse to courage, and the blood of a hero was permitted to be lawlessly, uselessly, and inhumanly shed, by a sovereign who had never been wronged by his victim. His death was ignominious only to his enemies. Those who had been his subjects will revere his memory. France may reproach it for the evils to which he unintentionally contributed… but when the book of truth shall be unfolded, it will appear that the errors of Murat were not errors of the heart.” It is as fitting an epitaph as that of Murat’s childhood friend Agar, the Count of Mosbourg, who devoted to him a monument listing his military exploits and achievements, closing with the declaration: “He knew how to conquer, he knew how to reign, he knew how to die.”

Some people feel that it's simpler to conceal the true economic picture in arbitration than if a lawyer is a lot more included. But if you intend to go to court over a family members problem you have to show the court that you have met a conciliator initially as well as considered mediation. mediationeurope.net’s accounting software is due to the fact that the government assumes with great reason, that it is normally much better that you decide these points in between yourselves if you can, as opposed to the court telling everyone what to do.
Tumblr media
A mediator can provide you lawful information but they can't offer you lawful recommendations. The arbitrator will certainly be neutral as well as can not inform you whether the settlement is fair. Nott’s Conflicting Narratives
[[Spoilers for Campaign 2 up to Episode 75]]
Man. D’you ever get the need to talk about how much you love your favorite character? Because I am feeling PASSIONATE for a specific little goblin girl right now.
I love Nott. She’s the peanut butter to my jam, the sugar to my spice, the awkward green butterball mushing around in my heart. She’s my absolute FAVORITE character of the cast and one of my all-time favorite characters in general. So, of course, I feel the need to bend over backwards, snap my spine into a pretzel, and projectile vomit my absolute love for this woman all over your dashes.
In this piece, I wanted to talk about her personal growth over the story and how she’s evolved from what viewers believed was merely a skittish, oddball of a green powder monkey klepto into an equally odd but emotionally resonant mother desperate to reclaim her life and family.
In my opinion, Nott’s overarching story revolves around a mother attempting to recapture her personal narrative from a world that has tried to tear it away from her.
Let’s first establish Nott’s position as the “mother” of the Mighty Nein.
Time for a recap.
As we discover in episode 49, Nott is a little goblin girl, who was once a young halfling woman, who was once a halfling child. In her desperate dash to protect her family from goblin kidnappers, the halfling woman known as Veth Brenatto is recaptured and put to death. Her corpse is then reanimated into the flesh puppet goblin suit we know and love today. In this process, her skin, body, and even mind are reconstructed to be more goblin-esque – a situation which Veth vehemently despises. To put distance between herself and her former life, she renames herself “Nott the Brave,” an anagram of Veth Brenatto.
“They made me everything… that I thought I was. Not pretty…not good. Just not.”
This event is significant for a multitude of reasons, primarily of which revolve around Nott’s relationship with motherhood.
In her essay The Symbolic Annihilation of Mothers in Popular Culture, Berit Astrӧm (2015) observes that mother characters are routinely devalued in popular culture via what she terms “symbolic annihilation.” Gaye Tuchman (1978) originally coined the phrase to describe the way in which media trivializes, condemns, or outright excludes mothers, but Astrӧm extends it to include the removal of mothers from narratives entirely.
We’ve seen this play out time and time again: for example, how many times have we questioned “what happened to the mother” in Disney movies? Often, we see that their exclusions leave little impact on the story and characters, with many media franchises unceremoniously minimizing the mother’s very existence as if it held no more meaning than an ironically titled paperweight.
Now, how does this apply to Nott?
Nott’s character is an inversion of this trope. Although she is killed by the goblins as per the trope’s wont, the narrative does not revolve around her son or husband trying to cope with her loss. Instead, the narrative remains centered on she the mother as this little goblin girl punches a fist through the earth and screams NOT TODAY SATAN. Her story revolves around her identity as a mother, and it takes shape in a plethora of different ways.
Nott exhibits many atypical characteristics that are not commonly associated with the idealized form of “motherhood.” She’s loud, she’s boisterous, she’s mischievous. She’s self-admittedly “strange” and eccentric. She saw it suit to dump a pitcher of cucumbers and proceed to eat them off the ground. Absolutely no one can convince me that this a goblin-specific trait and not just Nott being her weird little self.
And yet, Nott exhibits many typically feminine/motherly traits as well. In spite of her vulgarities, she’s gentle and kind towards Caleb, and it takes some time for their relationship to evolve beyond that. She likes dresses! She likes feeling pretty even though the situation rarely allows her to be. She likes to collect buttons and baubles and cutesy trinkets. And most of all, Nott expresses love. Beau’s the first person in the group to say it to someone else, but Nott is the first of anyone to emphatically express her love for this ragtag group of misfits they’ve wrangled together.
“I know we have things to do, and I want to do them, but the reason I want to find these people and rescue them is not to use them, or not because we’ve invested time in them. But it’s because… I love them.”
Nott is very much “the Heart” of the Mighty Nein, in spite of her idiosyncrasies and eccentricities. In this sense, she views herself as their mother – not just as Caleb’s parental figure, but the entirety of the group. It’s not just a meme, with adoption papers scrawled across a series of barbeque-stained napkins in chicken scratch. Over time, she’s genuinely adopted the M9 as her own, welcoming them under her stubby wings. Nott has said as much several times, but most significantly in episode 76, when she told Caleb that she wanted to protect everyone on their own individual quests.
“I protected you so that you could go on your journey and find yourself and fulfill your quest. I feel like I’ve got to do that for everyone now because, I don’t know, deep down inside it feels like my quest might not be done till everyone else has figured out who they are and what they want in this world. Everyone’s seeking something, you know?”
This protection – this overwhelming need to shield, to safeguard, to provide security and aegis – is crucial to recognizing what Nott is as a parent. A protector. A defender. Nott firmly believes that protection is representative of parenthood, its indistinguishable mirror image.
How do I know this? Nott confirmed it word-for-word in episode 13, when she explained her relationship with Caleb to the rest of the M9.
“Caleb and I have a very special…relationship. And it’s that of a parent and a child. But I am the parent, you do understand that, correct? I protect him. He’s my boy, and I keep him safe. … It’s my job to protect him, because I love him, and I am his protector.”
Nott clearly associates parenthood with protection. She reiterates it again and again. If you fall under her protection, you are her child. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how strong you are, how quick you are – she will protect you to the very last inch of her life. And over the course of the campaign, many, many times over, she’s nearly given said life to ensure the protection of others. An early example is when Nott threw her body over Caleb’s to shield him from attack. In 45, she drew the blue dragon’s attack to save Jester, shaving her hit points down to 1.
Nott again establishes this in 76.
“So I feel like, I need to be there to protect you all. To rescue you when there’s a dragon about to kill you and use my body as a shield; or to pull Beauregard out of the mouth of a worm; or to catch you when someone falls with a feather fall spell.”
This is a fundamental aspect of her character, and explains the majority of her actions. Even though she’s anxious and scared, Nott powers through her fears to protect her loved ones at any cost necessary – with a few nips to soothe her nerves, of course.
And as sweet as this gremlin of a goblin is, she doesn’t extend her protection to everyone she meets – she’s self-sacrificial, but only to her proverbial children, after they’ve spent more than enough time becoming comfortable with one another. In episode 75, for example, Nott suggested that Reani was expendable and thus should go first when facing the dragon. She likes Reani, sure, but if it came down to her and the M9? The outsider would be the first to go.
This further lends itself to the idea that Nott perceives protection as parenthood, self-sacrifice as motherly duty – she’s not just a nice gal throwing down her life in order to ensure the welfare of others, but only for the select few she deems in need of her protection.
However, Nott isn’t just a mother, which comes to the crux of this post. For the majority of the campaign, Nott has primarily identified as a mother figure – to Luc, to Caleb, to the M9 at large. But over time, she’s steadily developed into wanting to be more than just a mother. At the very least, she’s expressed her desires more openly over the course of the show as time has gone on. This development intersects with her identity issues as Nott struggles to reconcile two conflicting lives.
Throughout her short life – and I do mean short, she’s only about 25 (I’m turning 25 this month and the extent to which this little goblin has pushed herself through sends me into anxiety just by association) – Nott’s life has followed a very, shall we say, standard route. She’s always been someone’s daughter – someone’s wife – someone’s mother. Veth Brenatto grew up the small town of Felderwin with very few expectations of their people beyond the usual sort, assuming that said small town followed real-world small-town culture. As such, Veth traversed domestic paths in life, not straying far from those expectations. In spite of her intelligence and capabilities, Veth remained a housewife essentially, assisting Yeza when need be and taking care of Luc. This narrative held steady for some time.
And everything changed when the Fire Nation goblins attacked.
Veth’s narrative as a mother, as a wife, as a little halfling from the little hovel hole of Felderwin, was abruptly disrupted when she became Nott. Her narrative was stolen from her, manipulated and perverted into something she deemed grotesque. Forced to co-exist with the tribe, Nott becomes the torturer’s assistant – the absolute antithesis to motherhood in the representative forebearer of violence, depravity, and death. Her desire to nurture and protect is met with oppression and bloodshed.
It’s no wonder Nott detests the narrative the goblins thrust upon her. Her goblin exterior fundamentally represents a life forced upon her, a narrative chosen without her consent.
“I just don't like how I feel when I see my hands or my feet. They just feel wrong. I want to be different.”
“I'll be honest. I've started forgetting what it feels like to be a halfling, to be me. I don't remember everything any more. I feel like every day I'm more and more goblin. I don't like it at all. I don't like myself at all.”
“There's still something that's not right about this. This is not my body. It's just not me. And people liking you is nice, and people accepting you is nice. But if you feel wrong inside your own skin, then, well, you can't be a good mother or a good wife, or a good anything, really.”
Upon escaping, her narrative again changes: she’s no longer anyone’s assistant, but existing for herself. And only herself. Before she meets Caleb, she’s alone, unwanted by the populace at large and unable to return to Felderwin. She’s no longer a mother – just detested vermin looking to steal and connive, so people would believe.
That is partially why, in my opinion, she adopts Caleb as her own so quickly. Of course, Nott sees him as a means to an end in the beginning, as does he. They both admit that they had ‘other intentions’ in staying together than purely out of goodness of their hearts. However, it is evident that well before the campaign started, these two forged a bond that went beyond that of convenience. Nott fills the hole in her heart, the hole in her very narrative, by becoming Caleb’s adoptive mother, assisting him in his ventures and protecting him whenever need be. By doing this, she is able to choose for herself, to differentiate herself from the goblin’s narrative of pain and misery. She is no longer just “not,” she is Nott, Nott the Brave.
As was aforementioned, Nott’s motherhood narrative grows to include the rest of the M9. However, with time, she reaches a conflict within herself: while she hates being a goblin, she enjoys her new lifestyle. Is she afraid? She’s fucking petrified. Yet like the rest of the group, she’s fallen in love with adventuring, the highs and lows that demonstrate the extent of her capabilities. Nott isn’t just an assistant anymore – she can do magic! She can fight, she can pick locks, she can adapt firearms and create explosive weaponry. Hell, she can wield a crossbow with the dexterity of an Olympic gymnast and liquidate giant spiders into bloody pastes on the wall. With the M9, she’s seeing the world, far beyond the borders of Felderwin and her small-town life.
And suddenly, Veth’s narrative as a stay-at-home mom isn’t so appealing anymore.
Is there a problem inherent to existing as a housewife and full-time mother? No, of course not. Nevertheless, Nott has found herself in a strange position – she longs for her old life and family, ripped away from her by the gnarled claws of fate, yet remains enthralled by the wonders this new narrative can offer her.
In 36, Nott reveals to Cadeuceus that she believes the M9 could be representative of a new life for her – a new narrative.
“I’m not a religious lady, but I will tell you that, for me, this journey with the group has been a bit of a sign. … A sign that there could be, for all of us, another chapter.”
It’s a new chapter, a new narrative, a new life for Nott. One she could never have imagined possible for her in the confines of her small town. And by god, does she want to live it. Nott expressed this desire to live this life to its fullest, to live this new narrative to its fullest, in 27 after Molly’s death.
“Mollymauk was a rainbow man who represented life at its fullest. And. That’s what I want, even more than… even more than what we’re going for before. Together, we’re sort of living life now, aren’t we? And before, we were… in the darkness, so. … I want to find them so we don’t go back to the way it was, when we were hiding in the shadows and, and ducking into alleys to get away from people. We were safe, but we weren’t really alive, right? With these people, we’re having fun and winning contests. And. And killing bad guys, and rescuing children…it’s amazing.”
I’m of the opinion that Nott’s speech is reflective of both her experiences with Caleb as well as her own in Felderwin. She was living before – and she enjoyed it, yes! She obviously loves Yeza and Luc. But now, she’s seeing what life can be like when lived to its fullest, seeing what life can be like when she spearheads her own narrative. She gleans inspiration from Mollymauk, who decided to head his own narrative and remain unrepentantly unconcerned with what his past might have been like. With his death, Nott becomes convinced that she needs to truly lead this life, lead this newfound narrative with this family she’s amassed.
But with that realization comes conflict once the dredges of Nott’s previous life begin seeping into her narrative. This is especially once Nott reunites with Yeza in Xhorhas.
“Caleb, I’m feeling uneasy. … I, because. What the fuck am I doing here? I just was reunited with my husband, and I’ve – I -- we were given a chance to go on an adventure and I jumped at it like that. Am I a bad person? I just left him, I ditched my husband in a den of monsters to go adventuring with you.”
Rather than hold down the fort with her newly reunited husband, Nott instinctively leaps at the chance for adventure, the chance to go out and see more of the world. She doesn’t even think about it, it’s just oh? A side quest? Well fuck me rosy, time to knock my crossbow. Because that’s what Nott would do, not Veth. And once she realizes what she’s done, Nott begins wondering if she’s a terrible person for living her life. She begins questioning her intentions, wondering whether her actions are the ploy of some subconscious desire to remain free, remain independent of her responsibilities.
“You don’t think I’m just…delaying the inevitable? Scared of going back to my old life, or anything?”
Nott further recognizes the disparity between her two lives and how wide the gulf between them yawns.
“It’s just, I just don’t know like. Is he gonna…even like me anymore, I’m so different. Not just physically, I do different things now. … Will I like it? I’ve gotten a taste of adventure and, and seeing the world, and now I’ve gotta go back and be a…a housewife again?”
Nott doesn’t even know if she wants to be called Veth anymore. Not by people who have come into her life since Veth’s apparent demise. When Caleb asks her in 59, she dismisses the question and asserts that they should just go with Nott for now.
She asks Caleb to tell her what she should do, in a desperate plea for someone else to give her direction in life. Because driving your own narrative is hard. It’s a painful, painful process, full of ups and downs and mistakes and setbacks. But Caleb fundamentally cannot decide her narrative for her -- it’s Nott’s narrative, not his. He can help her along and support her, but he will never be able to direct it. She has to do it for herself.
(As a side note: I love, love, love how far Nott and Caleb’s relationship has come. Prior to the Xhorhas arc, Nott never bothered him with her problems, drudging on ahead as she didn’t want to “distract” him from his personal quest. She’s exactly like a mother, masking her insecurities and fears from her young child so that they won’t worry about what they can’t control. And now, as her child has grown up and become more aware of his mother’s struggles, she’s leaning on him more and more for support. It truly mirrors parent-child relationships and is representative of how far these characters have grown over time.)
With these conversations, it becomes evident that Nott is seeking more than family, more than the life of a housewife. And yet, simultaneously, she embodies the narrative of a mother, loves being a mother, and loves the people in both her immediate and found families. To merge these narratives will be an almost insurmountable task, from her perspective -- how can you raise a family when you’re constantly adventuring? You can’t endanger their lives. Conversely, is it responsible of a parent to endanger their own life, potentially risking everything for adventure’s sake? To widow your husband and orphan your child if something goes horribly wrong? If she becomes a housewife again, how long can she keep up the charade pretending she’s a halfling? If she stays, will she forever remain uncomfortable in her own skin? How long will she even live? Nott is juggling so many plates, and dropping even one could result in the partial devastation of these narratives she’s cultivated.
And she’s scared. She’s really, really scared. Nott is petrified of what comes next -- she knows it’s inevitable that she’s going to have to face these conflicting narratives in the future. She knows she can’t ignore it forever. And that prospect terrifies her. She says this explicitly in episode 69.
“I'm just scared, that's all. I'm scared of...I'm scared of what happens next. You know? I don't know what's going to happen after this. I found my husband. I found my son. And I want to go back with them so much. ... But I'm worried that if I go back, that'll be it.”
This overwhelming, paralyzing sense of fear has driven Nott to drink. Even more so than usual. Over the course of the show, Nott has made no secret of her drinking habits. She’s a drunkard -- she knows it, the M9 knows it. You, me, and the NSA agent watching you behind the screen know it. But it’s no accident the M9 has begun commenting more and more on her habitual intoxication. She simply is more intoxicated than usual. She’s depending more and more on her alcoholism to get through each day.
Nott is of course afraid of enemies, of secret dangers lurking behind every corner. She’s a perpetually anxious person, constantly filled with frenetic energy. But these anxieties have worsened ten-fold with the inclusion of her intersecting narratives and responsibilities. And honestly? With all that going on in her brain, Nott just flat out doesn’t want to think about it. She wants to live in the moment -- not in the past, not in the future, but the present.
“I'm thinking about things. And I don't want to think about things. I don't want to think about anything. I just want to be on an adventure with you guys and that's all I want and I don't want to think about anything else past that.”
And so, she turns to drinking. As she tells Caleb, drinking is her own form of self-care. While she may protect others, she herself needs protection too -- from her own thoughts, fears, and inner demons. From the physical dangers that manifest in front of her very person.
“I know you all have my back, I know you all care for me, but no one has my front. So this flask that I drink from, it’s not for fun, I’m not taking nips because I’m looking for fun. If I wanted fun I’d be in Nicodranus with my family. This flask is my shield. It allows me to do these things, to go forward and to protect all of you.”
Nott needs to shield herself from fears that she may not come back to her family. She needs to shield herself from fears that she won’t find a remedy to her situation, that she won’t ever be Veth again. She needs to shield herself from fears that these conflicting narratives will never reconcile, thereby isolating her from either family she’s come to love as her own.
All in all, Nott is currently torn between two lives -- one whose existence is linked to traditional motherhood, and another whose fate is yet undecided. And yet, by continuing with the M9, Nott has found herself on the path towards potential self-realization. This route she treads has the potential to shed the narrative the goblins thrust upon her and totally make one anew, one that is her own. In that sense, it’s representative of what this narrative means as a whole: Nott is more than just a mother. She’s a mother with autonomy. A mother with hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Unlike Berit Astrӧm’s (2015) analysis of symbolic annihilation, she is more than just a paper cutout of idealized motherhood left to be abandoned.
Indeed, Nott can be a mother without being the mother archetype.
Nott will certainly struggle to reconcile these narratives. She loves being a mother, but she clearly wants to love herself too. She wants to be more than just a mother, and thus she quests to recapture her personal narrative -- one where she can be both a mother and retain her personal autonomy.
I love the nuance and complexity Sam has demonstrated with this character, and I’m sure we’re only going to see more in the future.

THE BASICS
Name: Mordred Abbott Year: Seventh Age: 17 House: Slytherin Blood Status: Pureblood Allegiance: Neutral/Death Eaters Faceclaim: Jordan Fisher
BIO
Mordred Abbott’s life began with a bottle of firewhiskey. Madoc Abbott’s family would have never picked Verity Ramez as a match for their son—and technically, they didn’t. They were never really a couple, one of those on again, off again type situations. They were the couple at school that everyone just wished would break up and be done with it—but they didn’t, much to everyone’s dismay. Barely a year after graduating, Verity got pregnant. Madoc’s family was furious when they found out. He could have dumped Verity without a second thought, but the Abbott family was traditional and not long after finding out she was pregnant they were wed. It wasn’t a huge affair either, like Madoc’s brother’s wedding the year before. They were wed quickly and quietly, regardless of their own wants, and that was that. Mordred was born seven months after his parent’s wedding—and by the time that seven months had rolled around, his parent’s marriage was already in shambles, though they knew better than to show that to the world. Mordred grew up with a father who found solace at the bottom of a firewhiskey bottle and a mother who found comfort with anyone else.
Unfortunately, things didn’t improve for Mordred as he got older. His father blamed his mother for his own unhappiness, his mother blamed his father and his family for her unhappiness, and the Abbotts blamed Mordred. His home life was awful at best, unbearable at worst. As long as Mordred stayed quiet, they typically left him alone. Though his home situation was bad, his parents kept up appearances—after all, they needed to be seen as a happy loving family. It was only behind closed doors did things get ugly. Mordred got used to it: a public face versus a private one. There were some things a person just kept hidden and appearances, in a world like his, they were everything. He wouldn’t dare defy the expectations that were placed upon his head because he knew he’d be the one that got hurt in the end. Mordred learned he was good at it too—but maybe he was only good at it because he knew that if he wasn’t, the alternative was his father’s wrath. He kept quiet, didn’t make waves, and tried his hardest not to be seen, not heard—and for the most part he was successful.
Mordred was relieved when his Hogwarts letter came, if only to have it be an excuse to get out of his house for most of the year. He was the first of his peers to be called for sorting and a hatstall. Nearly six minutes passed before the hat finally called Slytherin. So Mordred took his seat with the rest of the snakes, and didn’t look back or think about all the things that maybe he could have been if he’d chosen a different path. Mordred made friends fast in Slytherin—he had to, really—with his family ties and the pureblood society being close knit. He’d always been more of a follower than a leader though, content with letting the rest of his friends tell him how he should act and what he should say. Mordred never really questioned the behavior of his pureblood friends. If there was another way to live, then he’d never been made aware of it. No, he was content with the abuse and ugliness that came along with pureblood society because being different made a person bad and Mordred Abbott never wanted to be a person that got cast aside for making a scene.
By fourth year, Mordred has had enough of his family and the people that were supposed to be his friends. He closed himself off from them a little bit at a time, not particularly caring if he lost friends along the way. It was easy to explain that he wanted to focus on his education, not being a terror around the school. Even by then, he was too afraid to say he was beginning to question the path he was supposed to be following. While he couldn’t outwardly defy the pureblood society, he did begin allowing himself to listen to the rhetoric of the people who did openly defy his society. That’s how he found himself involved with Lily Evans. He somehow convinced himself that he could somehow have something of his own, away from that life that was planned for him. Still afraid of what it would look like, they kept their relationship secret. Mordred thought that maybe if he kept this hidden from the world, that he could keep it safe—shield the small spark so it could become a fire. He stupidly allowed himself to fall for her, stupidly planned a life away from pureblood society, stupidly thought he was worth something.
In the end, it was his desire for things to stay the same that broke them up. They’d been walking a tightrope the whole time and as much as he wanted to, Mordred couldn’t take the leap. He hadn’t been ready for it then. After getting caught and his parents finding out about Lily, his family told him he couldn’t make any more mistakes. With his relationship over, Mordred hoped that things would go back to normal. He’d wanted everything to happen quietly and he hadn’t been afforded that. He could have chosen a different path, but he chose to end things. He picked his family—duty and honor to them—above a romance. Mordred tried to tell himself he did the right thing, though as time wore on, he stopped believing in his ability to make decisions.
Finally in his seventh year, Mordred has begun to realize that he has some decisions to make on his future. He can’t procrastinate anymore. His family expects him to be a certain way and that’s not particularly the path he wants to go down, though it is the easier one—or he can choose the path that maybe he should have all those years ago, even if the bridges might have been burnt along the way. Mordred isn’t sure he’s ready to make these decisions yet either. He’s hoping that something will happen that will push him towards the path he’s meant to take.

Two things. One, DAMN YOU FOR DOING ANOTHRR ELDERBURN THAT I DESPERATLY WANT. And two, can you give a better rundown of your changes to the A/B/O dynamics. Because I love the alterations I have seen you make so far (Omegas are like mother lions, not the first to fight but the last line of defense, unstoppable and driven, etc.) And I would like to get a full grasp of all the rules you utilize, if you don't mind. Also, was Winter getting herself off as well? Or just basking in the fantasy?
Okay, check below the cut for the further info on the A/B/O dynamics I use. For the second question… that would be telling…
I guess the easiest way to explain the changes I’ve made is to just outline the way Remnant society functions in this AU with regards to A/B/O dynamics.
Prior to the advent of weaponized dust and the establishment of Hunters as defenders against Grimm, humans and Faunus faced extinction, thwarted only by reliance on pockets of closely knit communities centered around protecting what little they could. It’s around this time that the terms ‘Alpha’, ‘Beta’, and ‘Omega’ were coined, to describe the roles each group took and how they corresponded to physiology.
Omegas are considered the heart of the family/community and often prize safety and security of others over their own. Omegas tend to band together, making friends with other Omegas and sometimes Betas with ease, to preserve and encourage a sense of community and shared responsibility for the safety of others. Omegas comprise the majority of Hunters, military, and public services because of this strong desire to protect but there’s also a deep seated need to be with friends and family that must be balanced with their duties. For this reason, Omega Hunters usually take on teaching and mentoring roles and remain close to their communities to provide defense in times of crisis. Omegas will go into heat- a period of time when their body actively tries to entice a mate- on average of once per year, though Omegas are capable of becoming pregnant all year round at a reduced success rate. Omegas produce powerful pheromones* during heat that communicate to Alphas and Betas that they’re ready to mate. Omegas serve as the dams in unions.
Alphas are considered the hands of the family/community and often feel duty bound to provide for others in whatever way they can. Alphas are driven by a need to prove themselves capable of providing a good or service, something that serves their family/community, and see other Alphas trying to provide that same good or service as a threat, leading them to be hyper competitive with others. Alphas comprise the minority of Hunters and majority of business leaders, the former willing to take on dangerous assignments and all of them willing to use whatever means are available to them to be successful. Alphas don’t share the same need for community as Omegas and thus can remain separated from the family/community for long periods of time without feeling a need to return. However, because Omegas tend to be more in tune with the needs of others, Alphas will often take their cues from the Omegas and Betas around them, only asserting themselves when decisive action is needed. Alphas are more susceptible to an Omega’s pheromones than Betas, unless one or both parties isn’t interested in the other. In these cases, the pheromones inspire aggression instead, as the Alpha will take up the duty of protector for the afflicted Omega. Alphas serve as the sire in unions.
Betas are considered the mind of the family/community and are often predisposed to mediating conflicts and solving problems. Betas typically exist in a state of flux, adjusting themselves to respond to whatever the family/community needs, and work together with Alphas and Omegas to ensure those needs are met. Due to being in a state of flux themselves, Betas tend to strive for stability elsewhere and take up occupations that lend themselves to that end. Beta Hunters work best in teams alongside Omegas and Alphas but can also work alone, though they tend to prefer the sensation that comes with having others to depend upon and support. Betas are driven by a need to patch any hole they come across and will stop to lend a hand no matter how small the task. Betas naturally possess** the ability to morph their physiology in response to their partner, taking on the role of sire in unions with Omegas and the role of dam in unions with Alphas. In Beta/Beta unions, one partner will take the role of sire and one will take the role of dam, and this will sometimes change depending on their moods.
Mating marks are used by partners in any given union to cement their bond. Commonly left on the shoulder or side of the neck, marks become a permanent bruise on the person’s skin so long as a few conditions are met. Once a person receives a mark from another, their scent alters just enough to incorporate qualities of their mate’s (or mates’) scent(s), a clear indicator to others that they’re not interested in being with anyone aside from their chosen mate. Mating marks are not given lightly; however, it isn’t uncommon for a mark to be given and not returned. These marks will fade with time as the person lets go of their feelings. Conversely, if the individual elects to keep the mark, they will, though it won’t be as prominent and the scent of the one who gave them the mark won’t be as noticeable, if at all.
*Pheromones are produced by Omegas, Alphas, and Betas, and communicate a wealth of knowledge. They can indicate romantic interest, mood, illness, and especially powerful ones- like those produced during heat- can influence others around them. Alphas- perhaps due to their sometimes detached nature from others- are generally more susceptible than Betas and Omegas. Only homosexual Alphas (Alphas only interested in mating with other Alphas) and some asexuals (Alphas, Betas, and Omegas) are completely immune to an Omega’s heat pheromones; these individuals are prized in their communities for being able to keep a level head and often assist Betas in providing for the community and taking up unattended duties left by those afflicted.
**Recent medical advances have allowed for the chemicals, pheromones, and compounds found in Betas to be artificially recreated for the purpose of assisting Alphas and Omegas in natural transitions to the designation of their choosing. The process has also been reverse engineered to assist Betas in remaining as either the sire or the dam by replicating the process with Alphas and Omegas.
Physiologically speaking, all Alphas, Omegas, and Betas possess the ability to breastfeed, because of the heavy emphasis on protecting and providing for the family/community that is shared across all three designations.
Okay, those are the basic rules I’m operating with, and some are explored more in depth in the fic proper. Now, aside from all that, I’m going to tell you what’s not going to be here. A few of the things that are common in the Omegaverse as it typically stands are the (sometimes intentional) lack of consent and the equation with Alphas being dominant and Omegas being submissive. In this version of the Omegaverse, consent is paramount, as anything that would erode/destroy the trust within a given community would be seen as a universal affront. Although pheromones can influence others, they can also discourage, and failing to heed that message will result in excessive, sometimes violent, reactions from others to protect whoever feels threatened. Next, submissive Alphas and dominant Omegas absolutely exist and it comes down to personal preference; in this case, Yang’s submissive inclinations are just something I HC for her across all incarnations.

Triggers: Abuse
He somehow convinced himself that he could somehow have something of his own, away from that life that was planned for him. Mordred thought that maybe if he kept this want hidden from the world, that he could keep it safe—shield the small spark so it could become a fire. The problem was that he never actually knew how to achieve his desires. He never stopped bullies, never apologized for their behavior, and acted the same the entire time he was trying to change. He could have chosen a different path, but he chose to follow the path that was laid out for him. He picked his family—duty and honor to them—above a romance. Mordred tried to tell himself he did the right thing, though as time wore on, he stopped believing in his ability to make decisions.
His family expected him to be a certain way and that was not particularly the path he wanted to go down, though it was the easier one—or he can choose the path that maybe he should have all those years ago, even if the bridges might have been burnt along the way. Mordred graduated and took the Dark Mark, later than most of the other Death Eaters his age took it. Mordred wondered if people can tell his whole heart isn’t in the conflict and given the opportunity he’d walk away from the whole conflict altogether. He is part of it because he knows that’s the path that was set for him and he has not yet found the courage leave his family behind. While he is a Death Eater, he doesn’t have much respect. He’s never been one of the violent ones and tends to stick to himself. Mordred doesn’t have much of a place among them and he knows it. With the abundance of new recruits to the Death Eaters, he might not be the complete bottom of the barrel anymore, but he knows he’s close. As long as he keeps his head down, he can handle everything people throw at him.

Riverdale Marriage Types
Okay, so since I am your basic sociology major, I couldn’t help but try to classify our beloved Riverdale characters into sociological theorems.
As a fandom we can all seem to agree that 99% of the Riverdale parents suck (Except Fred Andrews, our resident adult hero) or at the very least, have very lackluster parenting skills. This is interesting in it’s own sense because not one of the main characters other than Archie (who had a simple Troy Bolton complex arc with his dad) don’t have a strained relationship with their parents.
What is even MORE interesting is the obvious strains in each set of parents marriages.
In order to try and and understand the behaviour of Riverdale’s parents, I’m going to attempt to identify which marriage type the couples fall into based on Cuber and Harroff’s 1965 models. My analysis for this little project is heavily based on season 1 and the first two episodes of season 2.
The first thing to understand that marriages are categorized into two types. Utilitarian and Intrinsic. The majority of marriages in the world are utilitarian. If you live in North America, this might come as a surprise because of the huge cultural and societal emphasis to marry your true love. Marriage is romanticized in television and depicted mostly as intrinsic.
None of Riverdale’s marriages are intrinsic according to my analysis.
Ok so let’s get this started.
Alice and Hal Cooper - Devitalized Marriage
Tumblr media
Hal and Alice were actually the easiest one for me to classify.
A devitalized marriage is when a couple is typically married for several years but has lost it’s spice and meaning. Both partners were once deeply in love but it has fizzled. Time together is spent more often on “duty time” which puts their focuses on children, property, and reputation. Despite the bleak satisfaction, the marriage remains stable.
This screamed the Coopers to me. Alice and Hal were high school sweethearts, as Betty said in season 1. I honestly do believe that they were in love, despite bumps along the way (Alice giving up her first born for adoption, etc.) We see how they bicker and fight, however Alice’s top priorities are indeed her success at The Register, Betty’s success and the Cooper reputation as a whole. Although the means to maintain the reputation are questionable: They sent Polly away after discovering she is pregnant and made a town announcement in front of a church to inform the town about Polly’s pregnancy when she returned; Hal went as far as to break into Sheriff Keller’s office to conceal information that would damage the family’s image.
I’d also like to stress the utilitarianism functions this marriage has, economically. Established in 1x10, Alice grew up on the South Side. Marrying Hal allowed her to shed her south high skin (so to speak) to gain higher social status.
Penelope and Clifford Blossom - Passive Congenial Marriage
Tumblr media
While Clifford is no longer alive, we can piece together the kind of relationship he had with Penelope based on their conversations and behaviour to each other and their children in season 1.
I placed their marriage as Passive-Congenial. This type of marriage emphasizes qualities other than emotional closeness, and never expected marriage to encompass emotional intensity. Rather, partners engage in casual companionship. The union is centered around the sensibility of marriage as well as a huge focus behind financial stability.
From what we can tell, Penelope is unemployed. This suggests her dependency of Clifford rests in her desire of affluence rather than love. (This can be debated though, as it was established that Penelope was wealthy even in high school. Hermione tells Cheryl “You’re mother also couldn’t tell the difference between having money and having class” Whichever way you’d like to see it, her wealth only vastly multiplied with her marriage to a Blossom). We never saw Clifford or Penelope share any mutual care for each other. They sat next to each other, ate together, and spewed the word “Blossom” more than anything else. Clearly financial stability (read luxury) was at the crux of the Blossom’s priorities. To the extent their children would be abused (and killed) if they stood in their way of abundant success. An argument can even be made that Penelope was chosen as a suitable wife for Clifford because of her hair colour, in which the very image of the Blossoms could be maintained through the lineage of their children. This reinforces the “sensibility” notion of their marriage. Furthermore, Penelope showed far more raw emotion at her mansion/estate being engulfed in flames than from her own husband’s funeral. “Why are you crying, you hated him” She says to Cheryl, while she herself had dry eyes.
Hermione and Hiram Lodge - Conflict Habituated
Tumblr media
I wasn’t quite sure how to classify Hiram and Hermione just because we were only just introduced to Hiram as a character, and might have been given unreliable narration about Hiram’s intentions throughout the first season. Their relationship is tricky because although Hermione maintains her unwavering loyalty to her husband despite his crimes, she seems to flip from having power in her relationship (making it appear like an egalitarian marriage in which both partners are well aware of what they are doing) to being frustratingly manipulated and under the control of her husband. We will see as the seasons progress.
As it stands right now, I put them in a tentative Conflict- Habituated marriage. This is when the marriage has considerable tension, unresolved conflict, both spouses acknowledge incompatibility or tension as normal and do not attempt to solve or expect to resolve differences. The relationship as a whole is still very stable.
Clearly Hermione was uncomfortable with being stripped from some of her wealth and her husband being jailed, “Baby, we are guilty”  she snaps at Veronica and breaks down and sobs when things look sour. But she doesn’t let it drag her down. She tries to make her own business decisions, working at Pops Diner and doing business with Fred despite knowing her husband would disapprove. However, the moment her husband is back in town, she defends him, lies for him and behaves incredibly submissive. Is it pretend? Is it real? We don’t know. What we can boil it down to is that there is some conflict, this relationship is not all sunshine and roses (will Hermione ignore it as she has been so far or fight against it?) and ultimately the extent of this will soon unfold as we see them interact more together on screen.
Mary and Fred Andrews - (Dissolved) Vital Marriage
Tumblr media
Ok so I cheated a little because I said none of the marriages in Riverdale were intrinsic. But Mary and Fred are separated and planning a divorce so for the sake of simplicity I’ll consider them as no longer married. So. When they were together I believe they were in a vital marriage.
A vital marriage is when two partners define being together as being intensely enjoyable and important. Conflicts are likely to center around real issues and there is a focus on individual autonomy. The minority of marriages in the world are vital and they are in fact very hard to maintain, especially in North American culture where the value of marriage in juxtaposed with individual happiness, in which if a partner is not feeling happy, rather than trying to solve conflicts in the marriage, they leave the marriage.
I believe this is what happens with Mary and Fred. This doesn’t mean that they don’t both still care for each other or even dislike each other. Clearly Mary has made a life for herself out of Riverdale, perhaps restless from being tied down to such a small town (lmao I don’t blame her I wouldn’t want to be Riverdale’s resident lawyer right now). She makes an appearance twice, reevaluating her choices about leaving her son behind when she realizes Archie may not be be safe alone with his father, showing concern for the family she left and even taking phsyical care for Fred after he is injured.
So basically, even though somehow even though they have to worst “marriage” in the sense of marriage as an institution, they still have arguably the best, healthiest interpersonal relationship out of all the parents on the show. Way to go Andrews!
Sierra and Myles McCoy - Conflict- Habituated
Tumblr media
Once again, my guess for this one is as good as yours. I placed this marriage as a conflict-habituated union. Similarly to Hermione and Hiram, Myles is largely absent throughout season 1 which makes it difficult to analyze the relationship. The difference between Myles and Hiram however lies in Myles’s behavior towards his family when he did show up. It is clear from the get-go that Sierra and Myles have relatively different world views.  Sierra tells Josie in 1x06 that she’d hate for Josie to let her father down because if she did “He will somehow blame me” Myles disagrees with Josie pursuing music despite being a professional jazz player himself, whereas his wife is supportive. When together, their conversations were brief, but tense, and Myles ended up walking out on his daughter’s performance mid-act, as well as his wife, who he was attending the event with, and didn’t want him to go. This mutual tension is what flagged me as identifying the marriage as conflict-habituated because we see no attempt between Mr and Mrs to resolve any issues they have. They seem to just live on separately, together.
Gladys and FP - Who knows???
Tumblr media
I can’t classify these two because the only thing we know about them is that Gladys left FP and Jughead behind to live with her parents in Toledo (and also is refusing to visit her suffering son… not a fan). There’s also this mention about hospital bills. Not sure who was in the hospital. Jellybean? Gladys? Not clear. I’ll be honest I can’t even find any proof that these two were married. (Does FP wear a ring??) What we do know is that before FP was arrested he told Jughead he’d make an effort to win his mother and sister back, which might lean towards looking at another devitalized marriage? Not sure. I won’t put a label on it.
That’s the end! Hoped you liked this! Feel free to comment or send me an ask on this is you have any insight. Hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did putting it together! :)

Uranus & Past Life Trauma
In Evolutionary Astrology, Uranus is a trauma signature. This is because Uranus is considered the higher octave of Mercury, which pertains to the lower mind or short term memory. Uranus then represents the higher mind, or long term memory, reaching so far back that it’s actually able to give us an idea of difficulties we may have faced in the past. We may not remember, but Uranus does and typically responds well to meditation and regression. And because karma is considered to be a series of patterns, these traumatic themes are likely to play out in our lives at one point or another. There could be subconscious fears or issues surrounding the archetypal themes Uranus embodies in our chart, and this can go so far as to create triggers, much like a form of PTSD. When looking at Uranus in a chart, it’s important to consider the sign, house and aspects it’s making to other planets, namely the conjunction, square or opposition. (Sources: Uranus: Freedom From The Known by Jeffrey Wolf Green and Healing The Soul by Mark Jones.)
Uranus in Aries, the 1st house or in aspect to Mars: Here there is trauma on an instinctual, bodily level and is not necessarily rational. This can indicate some type of physical struggle, violence, sexual violence or overexertion. There’s a strong need for freedom and a sense that the will has been thwarted in some way. There could be subconscious memories of having died young, which can cause the individual to push themselves physically or sexually, trying to overcome a feeling of being ineffectual or having been cut down in their prime.
Uranus in Taurus, the 2nd house or in aspect to Venus: Trauma here can correspond to a narrowing of the self, as if the person shuts themselves off from other possibilities before those possibilities have even occurred. This is because they've experienced a loss of security and have been met with famine, lack of resources, sexual assault, perpetual anxiety, or mass catastrophe. They subconsciously fear the loss of self that comes from being reduced to survival mode. As a self-fulfilling prophecy, the life experience is reduced as they build a wall around themselves out of fear and seek to fulfill their own needs in a very narrow way that leaves no room for possibility or anything “new.” There could be a subconscious aversion to intimacy (an indicator of sexual assault) and they may struggle to open up to others as a result.
Uranus in Gemini, the 3rd house or in aspect to Mercury: Trauma occurs when others contradict or disagree with their viewpoint. There may be memories of alienation, imprisonment or having been tortured for speaking their mind, seeing a political or cultural conflict differently, or being the messenger of news no one wanted to hear. Trauma can also occur through siblings in the form of incest, bullying or opposing viewpoints. They may feel trapped in a narrative or a pattern of thinking, often feeling intensely victimized by things others have said or done to them. Over time this narrative can become deeply toxic and re-traumatizing to the point where even talking about the trauma can feel frustrating because they’ve already exhausted themselves analyzing it.
Uranus in Cancer, the 4th house or in aspect to the Moon: Traumatic fragmentation and dissociation within the inner child. This indicates very difficult family experiences and a core wounding to the emotional body. In this instance the family itself will mirror past life experiences, playing out a narrative drama the individual has gone through themselves in order to help the child learn and grow. Uranus here can indicate intense losses that have shattered the emotional body and sense of safety in the form of intense abandonment from loved ones. There could have been violent separations through war or betrayal, having been taken away from the family or given up for adoption. Either way there has been a theme of separation, lack of nurture, or difficulty with the mother or caregivers in past lives and as a result this person will have unmet childhood needs.
Uranus in Leo, the 5th house or in aspect to the Sun: Trauma occurs when the person realizes they are unable to create from a highly inspirational place at all times and burn themselves out. There can be a sense that their creativity has been hurt or damaged in some way or that they’re dissociated from it. They may have thrown themselves into one too many situations that didn’t work out, and feel crushed, futile or depressed as a result. There could be memories of aristocracy or a certain amount of artistic achievement that brought them money, power or prestige. There may be memories involving the loss of such power and a sense of having fallen from grace. Their creativity may have been met with hostility by others capable of inflicting great damage on the individual and as a result they can feel intensely traumatized if their creative contribution to life is not acknowledged, or worse, is negatively received. There could also be memories that involve the loss of a child or difficulty with children, which could make them particularly averse to the idea of being a parent.
Uranus in Virgo, the 6th house or in aspect to Mercury: The individual has desired to understand themselves and the nature of other people in a humble way. Unfortunately this has manifested as intense critical feedback from others and that feedback being deeply internalized. The mind runs like tape loops of negative thoughts and there’s a considerable amount of effort applied in finding evidence of why they’re shameful, bad, or why other people don’t like them. Without learning self-acceptance they will continuously struggle to quiet their anxiety and go out of their way to prove their own guilt.
Uranus in Libra, the 7th house or in aspect to Venus: Traumatic separation or termination of relationships that were experienced as shattering due to codependency. Because they believed they needed these individuals, once they died or left there was a feeling of having been cut off from what was considered joy in life. There has been excessive codependency in the past, an over-definition of the self through others. More weight has been given to how others see them versus how they see themselves. Trauma through having been disappointed and let down by others or a feeling that their true potential was never acknowledged by them.
Uranus in Scorpio, the 8th house or in aspect to Pluto: Trauma through relationships experienced as conflict. There is a sense of having been used or abused by others. Because of an intense desire to be close to other people, they may have found themselves soulfully engaged with another person only to feel a tremendous sense of betrayal once that person suddenly turned away from them or began acting selfishly. They could have been betrayed by a friend, lover, family member, or anyone they believed to be a trusted confidant. The overall experience has been one of psychological power dynamics prevailing over love and friendship. There could possibly be memories of destruction, the torturing and killing of someone close to the individual or perhaps they were the victim themselves and were utterly destroyed by someone they once trusted.
Uranus in Sagittarius, the 9th house or in aspect to Jupiter: The individual’s beliefs, vision of reality, or view of the world religiously or culturally has been the source of trauma. They may have been fundamentalists or died in a religious war. There’s a tremendous fire and purpose and a tendency for the person to want to do it all, but at some point they may have become messianic or over-driven. Ultimately it’s the way the individual has seen themselves fitting into all of life that has caused trauma.
Uranus in Capricorn, the 10th house or in aspect to Saturn: The way the individual is perceived by society, religion, their parents, or any situation in which authority applies itself judgmentally has been a source of trauma. There may be memories of being born into very cold family situations in which duty, devotion to order and social standing took precedence over love and understanding. There may also be memories of intense persecution or imprisonment from society or political regimes for not fitting in or having acted in a rebellious way. A sense of having to “follow the rules” could invoke anxiety due to memories of having been punished for breaking them. There’s a certain futility or despair in regard to following the rules since in certain families or totalitarian regimes, these rules could have changed frequently. Because of this, these people crack under societal pressure. Whether it’s filling out medical forms or applying for a job, these day to day societal customs evoke memories of such regimes or dysfunctional families in which power was used abusively. In this life or other lives there is a theme of having been at the mercy of insecure, absent, tyrannical or bullying fathers, bosses, and political figures. People who wielded their power and authority without empathy and mistreated others as a result.
Uranus in Aquarius or the 11th house: Here there is tremendous dissociation, as if the self has become a fragmentary identity. Trauma occurs when the individual has reached some kind of recognition that the way they’re living is not true to their own nature or who they really are. When they have recognized that there are parts of them that aren’t real or are distortions, fictions made up about the self in order to protect against the vulnerabilities of life.
Uranus in Pisces, the 12th house or in aspect to Neptune: Trauma often accompanies a sense of being overwhelmed by larger forces. This can cause distressing inner states of futility, meaninglessness, and feeling victimized or attacked by life. It can also correspond to certain psychological states of imprisonment or enslavement, or even chosen imprisonment.

An Autumn Afternoon: Ozu's Last Masterpiece
Tumblr media
I have written in these pages numerous times of my love for cinema, of the moments captured on celluloid, of those magical images that speak, not only to the intellect, but to my very soul. The wonder of cinema is that it can take the mundane, the ordinary, and make it enchanted; it can pour mystery into the simplest and most natural occurrences. It can reveal depths to the everyday humdrum. There has been only a chosen few directors who have been able to achieve this transcendence with regularity over a sustained period of time, and o f these few, is a director I am getting to know more and more and to love whole-heartedly: Yasujiro Ozu.
When putting on a Yasujiro Ozu film you know what you are going to get. It’s the reason to watch them, the familiarity of themes, of actors and, most of all, of style.
Tumblr media
I am not sure if there has ever been a director with such a singular vision as the great Japanese filmmaker. He was a man who developed a way of looking at the world, of capturing it on film and transposing his obsessions from mind to image, rarely deviating from the well-used blueprint he created - a unique style that has been distinctly influential yet singularly his own.
It is this style, and for the themes that he was determined to explore over and over again, that repeatedly brings me back to his work. They are films which stay with me for days and weeks after I have seen them, films that I return to in my mind even when I am unable to watch them.
Ozu made 54 films in a career that spanned 35 years, starting in 1927 – the year that gave us the birth of sound in Hollywood - and ended in 1962, a year before he died on his sixtieth birthday. I have written about Ozu before and the most recent film of his that I had the privilege to see this week was his very last - An Autumn Afternoon.
It is a film which tells the same story as many of his others and maintains the same themes – the difference and the conflicts between the older and younger generations in a Japan that was going through some fundamental cultural changes. It tells the story of Shūhei Hirayama (played by the the great Chishu Ryu who appeared in 52 of Ozu's 54 films), a successful aging business man and widow with three children – two sons and one daughter. He lives with his youngest son, Kazuo (Shin'ichirō Mikami)and his daughter, Michiko (Shima Iwashita). In the absence of a wife and mother Hirayama and Kazuo rely heavily on Michiko. She works for a living then comes home and does the cooking and cleaning and generally looks after the men's needs. In many respects, she represents the traditional image of a woman, looking after her home and the men who live therein. Yet she is not a typical housewife. She is conflicted between her duties, especially to her father, and the desires and needs of a modern woman. Because of this she rarely smiles and often gripes at the men who take her for granted.
Yet Michiko is expected to get married one day and leave her family for her new one. Everyone sees this except Michiko and her father, yet Hirayama begins to come under pressure from his friends and then, while at a party in honour of an old school teacher, he witnesses the sad decline of the teacher who now works in a struggling noodle parlour with his daughter who has now grown too old to marry and is herself living a lonely depressing life.
Tumblr media
In contrast, Hirayama's oldest son, Koichi, has left home and is married to Akiko. Their relationship is a modern one, one in which the husband and wife enjoy far more equality and both have similar expectations out of life. This in itself causes conflicts as neither Koichi nor Akiko make enough money to indulge in the conveniences of this modern post-war japan (they have to borrow money off Hirayama to buy a Fridge, while Koichi wants to buy some golf clubs and Akiko covets her neighbour's vacuum cleaner). Both husband and wife wear the aprons, and it is Akiko who seems to control the purse strings. Akiko is one of the highlights of An Autumn Afternoon and his played with an attractive feistiness by the wonderful Mariko Okadaand it is a role that seems like a very natural progression from Okada's performance in Ozu's earlier film Late Autumn (1960).
Yet the film is not about Michiku, Koichi, or any of Hirayama's friends, family or acquaintances. It is a film about Hirayama himself, a man struggling to reconcile himself to the fact that one day he will be alone. It is the same struggle that Ryo also faced at the end of Tokyo Story and Setsuko Hara faced at the very end of Late Autumn. In both endings the characters slowly folds clothes, their eyes lost and vacant, almost forlorn, as they contemplate the future. Of course, Hirayama, being a man who likes to drink, greets this same future with alcohol. After Michiku is finally married, Hirayama goes to a bar, still dressed in his wedding suit. The barmaid (who is the reason he goes there as she reminds him of his wife) asks him if he has been to a funeral. 'Something like that,' he replies.
Tumblr media
Ozu never married, he lived with his mother for most of his life (she died a year before he did) yet the inevitability of loneliness was something he explored time and time again. Maybe it was his way of confronting the inevitability of facing his mother's death one day and the prospect of living alone that consumed him, yet he never addressed it directly – focusing on the loss of a child to marriage rather than the loss of a parent. What he did explore with great conviction was the inevitability of change. Whilst he served during the war and was stationed in China, he didn't seem to hold any bitterness of defeat. In one scene, Hirayama – who had been a captain during the war – takes part in a mockery of the Naval salute with a worker who had once served under him. Later in conversation he states 'Maybe it was better that we lost the war.'
Tumblr media
This seems to me as of unique importance to Ozu. His films do not run from the past or from the future. While accepting the difficulty modernism has on the older generation his films also accept and embrace youthful change. This conflict between the generations is important and can be amusing, but it is a change that must be accepted, even if it means leaving the older generation behind.
Few filmmakers could explore this generational dichotomy with the subtlety or beauty of Ozu. To watch his films is to be immersed in a quiet gentleness of expression which envelopes you entirely. His films are leisurely paced and often allow conversations to develop, for jokes to be repeated, for events to play out. They are not flashy or obviously stylised yet they are distinct. An Autumn Afternoon may not hit the heights of Tokyo Story or Late Autumn but this is not a criticism as it is a wonderful movie which had me captivated throughout. There is also a sadness that this was Ozu's final film and I can't help but think that, at the end as Hirayama drinks for a future without his daughter, Ryo was drinking for a future without his director.

Shoplifting and Loss Prevention: Do We Need a Fresh Look?
Shoplifting and Loss Prevention: Do We Need a Fresh Look?
Traditional Loss Prevention is not working. If it was working, the retail world would not still be suffering $35 million or more a day in losses. If it was working, retail owners and store directors would not be going through security and loss prevention officers or the security companies they represent like the free samples they often hand out to customers. Security experts and loss prevention companies would not be constantly scrambling for new accounts, or be in conflict with the accounts they service.
Shoplifting is one of the least detected and most unreported crimes. Stock control in many stores is so deficient that few retailers know how many goods they are losing to shoplifters or their own staff. Statistically, so long as shrinkage does not exceed 2-3% of goods sold, retailers pay little attention to shoplifting. There are also financial incentives for managers to increase the bottom line profits. The bonuses they receive are often based on profit margins, and paying for security services can be a drag on profits. Managers are under constant pressure to justify expenses in a corporate world driven by profit.
Retailers have spent millions trying to address the problem of shoplifting. They invest in cameras and recording equipment and hire plainclothes officers or uniformed officers in an attempt to catch the shoplifter. Our personal experience has taught us that many retailers’ perception is that if shoplifters are not being caught and arrested; the security company is not doing its job. Arrests are a tangible result in the eyes of many retail managers and administrators. It is justifiable proof that the money they are spending on loss prevention is indeed paying off and as a result there is a stink in the air. There is often an unspoken expectation directed toward the loss prevention/security officer, which goes something like this: “If you are not making arrests, you must not be doing your job. If you are not doing your job, why are we paying you?”
Let’s think outside the box for a moment. If there was a method of effectively deterring shoplifters, and officers were successful at it, would retail managers and administrators recognize it? After all, there will be very few arrests if the “prevention” part of loss prevention is successful. In fact, if the officer is doing the job well they will be making fewer arrests and having fewer confrontations; not more. We encourage retail managers and administrators to take the time to fully understand the problem of shoplifting, along with the legal and safety challenges the security officer faces in every interaction they have with a customer or potential shoplifter.
Good security companies are hard to find, but those who excel understand their business. They hire good officers, use sound techniques, train their officers well and manage personnel to the best of their ability. Unfortunately the “way we have always done business” holds many of their abilities captive. Rather than becoming a partner in deterring theft, the loss prevention officer becomes a necessary evil. The officer is often disdained by the retailers that hired them, yet is required in order to reduce liability and curtail theft.
Defining the Main Issues
• The largest problem in the area of retail loss is the inability of Loss Prevention Specialists to convince and persuade store owners and managers to improve their security based on solid research.
• Retailers install state of the art camera systems, and then fail to train officers how to use them effectively. Sometimes retailers do not maintain their camera systems. Or perhaps the cameras are not placed in critical locations. Some hidden cameras should actually be exposed.
• Many retailers and some security companies use emotion rather than research to guide critical decisions regarding officer work hours and loss prevention methods.
• Retailers under-staff shifts which results in officers not being effective. Imagine one checkout clerk to 100 customers. Yet, there exists an expectation that one officer on duty will be able to effectively monitor cameras, patrol the property, make regular rounds and address any safety issue that spontaneously arises in addition to catching all shoplifters. The statistics tell us that 1 in 11 people shoplift. How does one officer effectively accomplish all this?
• Retailers put an enormous amount of pressure on officers to produce results. This landed one retailer in the middle of a lawsuit as officers went beyond the legal limits to produce results. It cost the retailer over $50,000 in the resulting lawsuit. 50K goes a long way. Depending on how you work the numbers, this amount is equal to the amount it would have cost to employ one loss prevention officer for over 3,000 hours. The manager responsible for the debacle wanted results. He was heard to say to his officers; “Go stir something up. Let’s get something going.” He received costly results.
• The Retail Industry doesn’t listen. I recently provided consultation to a retailer where one of the managers insisted plainclothes officers confront customers parking in “no parking” zones; despite the fact the retailer had sworn uniform police officers patrolling the parking lot whenever the store was open. Common sense would dictate the police officer would be the logical one to speak to customers about parking violations; not the loss prevention officer.
• Retailers and Loss Prevention Specialists have little respect for each other. Time and time again retail managers have expressed their frustration with the officer who is assigned to their store but shows up late, in a dirty uniform and is more interested in fraternizing with employees rather than catching shoplifters. This is a legitimate complaint and the burden rests squarely on the hiring procedures and training requirements of the Loss Prevention/Security Company.
In summary, there are many retailers and loss prevention personnel who just don’t get it. Neither one wants to spend money to facilitate sound loss prevention principles in the spirit of excellence. The retailer wants to dictate the mission of loss prevention without looking at the available research. Retailers are good at what they do; selling things. They are not security and loss prevention experts. Yet, they demand results.
Can you imagine the response to the loss prevention officer who walks into the retail manager’s office and suggests how they might better price some of their items? Conversely, loss prevention companies complain about the way they are treated by retailers while providing them officers that are indifferent and unprofessional. There needs to be some open dialogue about these issues.
To wage a war one first must understand the enemy. To find any solution it is desirable to understand the problem first. Let’s take a look at who the shoplifter is.
Shoplifting Facts
Information and statistics provided by the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, a non-profit organization.
• More than $13 billion worth of goods are stolen from retailers each year. That’s more than $35 million per day. • There are approximately 27 million or 1 in 11 people, who shoplift in our nation today. More than 10 million people have been caught shoplifting in the last five years. • Shoplifting affects more than the offender. It overburdens the police and the courts, adds to a store’s security expenses, costs consumers more for goods, costs communities lost dollars in sales taxes and hurts children and families. • Shoplifters steal from all types of stores including department stores, specialty shops, supermarkets, drug stores, discounters, music stores, convenience stores and thrift shops. • There is no profile of a typical shoplifter. Men and women shoplift about equally as often. • Approximately 25 percent of shoplifters are kids, 75 percent are adults. 55 percent of adult shoplifters say they started shoplifting in their teens. • Many shoplifters buy and steal merchandise in the same visit. Shoplifters commonly steal from $2 to $200 per incident depending upon the type of store and items chosen. • Shoplifting is often not a premeditated crime. 73 percent of adult and 72 percent of juvenile shoplifters don’t plan to steal in advance. • 89 percent of kids say they know other kids who shoplift. 66 percent say they hang out with those kids. • Shoplifters say they are caught an average of only once in every 48 times they steal. They are turned over to the police 50 percent of the time. • Approximately 3 percent of shoplifters are “professionals” who steal solely for resale or profit as a business. These include drug addicts who steal to feed their habit, hardened professionals who steal as a life-style and international shoplifting gangs who steal for profit as a business. “Professional” shoplifters are responsible for 10 percent of the total dollar losses. • The vast majority of shoplifters are “non-professionals” who steal, not out of criminal intent, financial need or greed but as a response to social and personal pressures in their life. • The excitement generated from “getting away with it” produces a chemical reaction resulting in what shoplifters describe as an incredible “rush” or “high” feeling. Many shoplifters will tell you that this high is their “true reward,” rather than the merchandise itself. • Drug addicts, who have become addicted to shoplifting, describe shoplifting as equally addicting as drugs. • 57 percent of adults and 33 percent of juveniles say it is hard for them to stop shoplifting even after getting caught. • Most non-professional shoplifters don’t commit other types of crimes. They’ll never steal an ashtray from your house and will return to you a $20 bill you may have dropped. Their criminal activity is restricted to shoplifting and therefore, any rehabilitation program should be “offense-specific” for this crime. • Habitual shoplifters steal an average of 1.6 times per week. • Statistically, the majority of shoplifting incidents occur late in the week, between Wednesday and Saturday. Other high-risk times include non-school days, late mornings and late afternoons into the evening.
Employee fraud aside, we believe the most important statistic is: The vast majority of shoplifters are “non-professionals” who steal, not out of criminal intent, financial need or greed but as a response to social and personal pressures in their life, and shoplifting is addicting.
Differentiating Types of Shoplifters
Author Terry Shulman (JD, MSW, CSW, ACSW, CAC-I) divides shoplifters into six distinct groups, each with certain identifiable characteristics and expected responses if they are caught. The percentage that follows is Shulman’s estimate as to the percentage of the total shoplifting population that the particular group comprises. Note: These percentages will change to some degree depending on the demographics of the area.
• The Addictive-Compulsive Shoplifter represents 85% of the shoplifter population. This group emotionally has a lot of repressed anger and often exhibits signs of other compulsive addictions, such as overeating, shopping, drug use, or gambling. These people often give to others and don’t take care of themselves. Typically, they will steal items that are often inexpensive, and then give them to others as gifts. If caught, they will show guilt, shame, or remorse. Often, they will breakdown and cry when caught and confronted.
• The Professionals are those who steal for profit or lifestyle and they represent 2% of the shoplifter population. Professionals will try to steal high-end, expensive items, often stealing multiple items at one time. Many carry tools and utensils on them to assist with the theft. Most likely, this group will resist arrest if confronted and will attempt to flee the store. If caught and detained, they will remain cool and calm, showing no remorse or emotion.
• The Impoverished are those who steal out of economic need and they represent about 5% of the shoplifter population. Typically, they will steal necessities, like food, diapers, toiletries, or children’s clothing. Often, their manner of dress and hygiene may be poor. If caught, they will usually show remorse, but state their frustration with their lack of money, and may voice hostility against a “System” that keeps them impoverished.
• The Thrill Seeker steals on a dare or for the excitement. They represent 5% of the shoplifter population. These shoplifters will often steal in groups. Many teenagers fall into this category.
• Drug Addicts steal to pay for their drug habit and they represent 2% of the shoplifting population. Like Professionals, they prefer stealing expensive, high-end items, usually multiple items at a time. Their appearance often shows signs of substance abuse. They often carry drugs or drug paraphernalia on themselves. They are usually less careful than the Professional, but will likely flee the store if confronted.
• Kleptomaniacs are people who steal for no apparent reason and they represent 1% of the shoplifter population. Kleptomaniacs are impulsive and often careless. They will often take items they don’t need and can’t use, like stealing shoes that don’t fit. If caught, many will admit they are kleptomaniacs and do not feel much remorse or shame. They will often use common excuses, like “I don’t remember taking it”, or “I don’t know why I took it because I don’t even need it”.
Narrowing the Focus
The focus of loss prevention should be prevention. Prevention policies and techniques should be aimed at the people responsible for 85% of losses; the Addictive-Compulsive Thief.
The behavioral characteristics that should be considered when looking toward techniques that are effective with this group are: • There is a recurrent failure to resist obsessive, addictive, or compulsive thoughts and urges to steal objects. • There is already an ever-present tension in their lives well before commission of the theft. • The act of shoplifting brings pleasure and relief at the time of, or just after committing theft. • They usually feel guilt or shame afterwards. • The stealing is very often acting-out behavior based in anger, or a way of trying to “make life right.” • The stealing is not due to Conduct Disorder or Antisocial Personality Disorder. Most people who steal are good, caring, law-abiding people. • This group of people is at risk of cross-addiction.
You now have a behavioral snapshot of the psychology behind the people primarily responsible for most of the shoplifting in the United States. The customer causing most of the loss in retail is doing so compulsively, successfully, often, spontaneously and is undeterred when caught. This person is possibly as addicted to shoplifting as is the drug addict to the drug.
Fear of consequences does not deter this type of shoplifter. Prosecuting shoplifters does not deter future shoplifting. Many have been arrested before and already know the potential of jail is there, but they are too smart to get caught.
We recognize there are store managers who, regardless of research, cling to “old-school” techniques including catching as many shoplifters as possible, believing word will spread around the community that their store is one the shoplifter should avoid because of aggressive enforcement. The key here may not be in sending everyone to jail, but in raising the perception the shoplifter will get caught. If you choose this route, it is best accomplished by catching as many shoplifters as possible and processing them quickly. It may be well worth considering just trespassing the offender, by-passing the arrest reports and waiting for the police to arrive. If the merchandise is recovered and the shoplifter can be quickly processed this way, word will spread. By doing so a store can create an illusion they are catching everyone. However, this strategy does not address the core problem.
Framing the Solution
I have had significant professional experience with people who are struggling with addiction. Additionally, I have had contact with a large number of rehabilitation and recovery programs. There is one principle in addiction you can almost always count on. Until the addict reaches their own personal bottom, outside intervention has little impact, as evidenced by the large majority of shoplifters who have been caught but continue to shoplift. Additionally, addicts are experts at manipulation and deceit. They know how to reach their goal.
Most addicts in recovery have their own story to tell; how they hit bottom. It is unlikely that the Retail and Loss Prevention industry is going to facilitate the recovery of the shoplifting addict as this is not part of their mission. However, they can put some simple things in place to get the addict to think about their behavior. One of the soundest techniques with compulsive and impulsive people is to get them to slow down; to think through their actions and the potential consequences. Retailers can do this.
Impulsive people tend to develop psychiatric problems, be substance abusers and are characteristic of anti-social personality disorder. Normal inhibitions, which most of us possess, get no time to rise in these people. If the impulsive person’s internal inhibition had a voice, it would be saying; “I am not responsible for my life.” If the impulsive person’s external inhibition had a voice, it would be saying; “I have no control; my life is ruled by external events.” The need to satisfy immediate needs is all they focus on. This impulsivity is most effectively diffused by keeping them in the “here and now”, not yesterday or tomorrow.
The technique of getting them to slow down and think about what they are about to do is central to many cognitive-behavioral interventions for the addict. It teaches them how to stop before acting impulsively and think about the cause and effect relationships of their intended behavior. Beyond that, it encourages them to verbalize to themselves or others what they will do, and then do the chosen behavior. Again, the purpose of the technique is to slow down the impulsive thinking long enough to get them into the “here and now”.
Before we apply this principle to loss prevention, let’s take a look at some loss prevention research. Then, we will consider some simple techniques with the primary focus and goal being to pull the impulsive shoplifting addict into the here and now.
Loss Prevention Research
Loss prevention is not complicated. Once the asset or merchandise to be protected is determined, figure out what losses you are willing to accept. Then, based on finances, begin to put barriers in place between that merchandise and the person intent on stealing it. You implement these barriers in concentric circles, starting from the outside perimeter working in towards the identified merchandise.
1. One well-known study showed that when specific merchandise was prominently marked with large red stars as being frequently taken by shoplifters, shoplifting was virtually eliminated. Researchers explained that publicly identifying specific items made the threat of detection and apprehension tangible.
2. Research suggests that plainclothes store detectives have only a limited impact on shoplifting. A study in a large London music store showed the store would need to hire 17 times more than the 4 store detectives they had on duty to catch all the shoplifters likely to enter the store. Advertising an officer’s presence (uniformed officer) has a greater deterrent effect than a plainclothes officer, but it may also mean that shoplifters exercise greater caution. Little is known from research about the effectiveness of the uniformed security guard. In general, guards who continually move around, creating an active, visible presence, are likely to be more effective.
3. There is little evidence that prosecuting ordinary shoplifters is an effective preventative measure. Consequently, there is considerable value in making the arrest procedure more efficient.
4. Civil Recovery: In nearly ½ of these cases, the sums are paid. Civil recovery is not meant to be a substitute for criminal proceedings. Rather, it is meant to provide an additional shoplifting deterrent.
5. Banning known shoplifters: Little is known about the effectiveness of this practice, but it might have some limited value.
6. CCTV. Research indicates the value of cameras is directly related to the sophistication of the system used. Effectiveness is usually quite marked in the first few months after installation, but then tapers off. The explanation for this by researchers is that would be offenders become increasingly desensitized to CCTV. We think it is also likely that officers eventually get into work patterns that may reduce their time in CCTV monitoring.
7. Using Electronic article surveillance and tagging (EAS). Multiple studies have shown this practice could reduce inventory shrinkage from 35-75%. There are, however, considerable costs in buying and running EAS systems.
Recommendations
Before implementing any strategies, you should make attempts to measure the problem first. Is there an inordinate amount of roll-outs occurring? Where are the most opened items and cases found? It is good to define the greatest areas of vulnerability, and then employ strategies that target the vulnerability. Highest risk items should be given greatest protection.
Parking Lots: Keep the parking lot and outside entrance doors clean and neat. Mount an obvious camera in the area. Keep “no parking” areas clear.
Cameras: Mount CCTV at the front entrance of the store: customers will see themselves on television while walking into the store & when leaving. Monitors should be conspicuously placed. For covert surveillance it is preferable to have the camera camouflaged, as most internal cameras are. Use these cameras to catch the offender doing something wrong without advertising they are being watched. Most people do not look up in any environment unless prompted to do so. That is why these cameras work well in those situations. However, for deterrence, you want people to know there is a camera watching them. The camera does not have to be real, but it should be obvious. After all, perception is most people’s reality.
Signs at the Store Entrance: These signs should indicate that the store is monitored by camera surveillance, security personnel, and undercover officers and that the store has a zero tolerance policy towards shoplifters.
Several years ago I was asked to consult for a store that was leasing space at a major mall for a limited time to sell clearance products. I advised them to put signs at the entrance to the store space indicating the store was being monitored by electronic and human surveillance. Within 24 hours the store owner was approached by mall administrators telling them to remove the signs, because they did not want the public getting the wrong impression. This, of course, made no sense at all, and was clearly based on the administrator’s fear that such a sign might plant the perception of a criminal presence into the mind of shopper.
We suggest something new and different; a direct statement to the person responsible for 85% of the shoplifting – the addictive/compulsive thief. The sign might read; “If you are struggling with shoplifting addiction, we recommend you consider the consequences of shoplifting. You will be arrested and prosecuted vigorously. There will be legal charges you will incur. You will be trespassed from this store and post your picture. We also contact one immediate family member and inform them of your actions. Please consider contacting Shoplifters Anonymous at xxx-xxx-xxxx or ShopliftersAnonymous.com.” We would go as far as to suggest perhaps there be pamphlets available as well to the shoplifting addict. This provides further intervention and a public relations side benefit is the obvious concern the store has for those struggling with addiction.

Instruct your employees and loss prevention or security officers to make direct eye contact and speak to as many customers as possible. Customer service is one of the easiest and most effective ways of deterring the shoplifter. A shoplifter needs privacy to steal. Good customer service greatly reduces the customer’s privacy through visible contact and direct communication. This direct communication translates into an unconscious message of “bonding” between the store and the potential thief. It unconsciously deters the notion of shoplifting. It is more difficult to steal from someone you know than a complete stranger. Make the customer feel welcome. Make the customer happy. Make the customer feel that you are ready to help them with their shopping needs. Start a conversation; anything to create a bond with the customer.
In the event that the officer or employee suspects a customer is attempting to steal, they should immediately approach the customer and offer assistance. The potential shoplifter is likely to think they have just been observed shoplifting. If they think they are caught, they may want to leave the stolen item in the store. There are several ways of handling this. The officer can just back off so the shoplifter can “unload” the item. If there is some certainty they have concealed an item, an employee might offer to hold it for them at the register until they are ready to check out. Most employees have little interest in acting in a security or loss prevention capacity. This attitude must be nurtured by managers.
Match a uniform officer with a plainclothes officer for every hour of loss prevention coverage. They provide two very distinct functions. Our research indicates this is the best combination to deter theft. One without the other simply lacks the overall effectiveness they have working together. If the budget allows only one officer, we recommend a uniform officer who spends a great deal of their time concentrating on the primary issues presented in this article.
Mount an obvious camera, or dummy camera, in areas of commonly stolen items. If using a camera encased in the fiberglass bubble, the bubble should be placed low enough so the potential thief can see it.
Environmental Design is important. Access to the shoplifter’s target should be time consuming. Mirrors can be used to see around corners, or to make the potential shoplifter think they are being watched. Electronic tags are a possibility for the small, expensive items that grocery stores sell like health and beauty products and cigarettes. Sign and posters can be used to reinforce security messages. They should be placed where potential shoplifters will see them and around the store in various locations, particularly around high-risk merchandise. It raises the perception that the store is serious about security. Direct customer traffic. Utilize less entrances and exits. Reduce passageways, blind corners and hidden alcoves. Reduce high displays that conceal shoppers. Arrange aisles that staff can easily survey from one end to the other. Remember, goods on the ground floor and near entrances are at greater risk of theft, because the shoplifter is in the store for less time and is thus at less risk of getting caught. Move hot products into higher security zones.
Post an officer or employee near the entrance just to check for a receipt. You may have noted at some of the Superstores like Costco and Sam’s there is restricted customer entry and exit. Most have to enter and exit through one door. When exiting, there is an employee standing there to take the customer receipt and match it against their merchandise. This, we realize, may be unrealistic in a grocery setting, but just checking for a receipt, and not checking it against the merchandise may have an overall effect.
Please consider the study in which specific merchandise was prominently marked with large red stars as being frequently taken by shoplifters and shoplifting was virtually eliminated.
We like keeping things simple and this one is a “no-brainer”. Either post store personnel close to the area most items are taken from or take those items and move them to an area where they are in direct eye-line sight of employees. Lacking these actions, we suggest you put up a camera or dummy camera in the area and make the camera obvious, or post a uniformed security guard in that area.
I recently spoke to a retail manager at a major chain who indicated he has suggested, for several years, that the aisle containing frequently stolen items be moved to an area within employee view. The suggestion has fallen on deaf ears. Those who are in authority over him have decided aesthetics and consistency between stores takes precedence over these losses. In these incidences little can be done to prevent loss.
We encourage all the traditional techniques of loss prevention, but only if they are effective. We do believe that there needs to be a shift in the focus of loss prevention from protecting the merchandise to directly addressing the shoplifter responsible for most theft. Loss Prevention and Retail Operations needs to begin to communicate more effectively, taking a fresh look at how they approach shoplifting.
The Bottom Line
In summary, you have just read a significant amount of information which, if implemented, can have a profound impact on losses.
1. Determine the focus of the problem. 2. Implement strategies based on solid research. 3. Hire the right people. Use integrity screening/testing tools. Remember, testing stores have far less employee theft than non-testing stores. 4. Train your people properly. 5. Keep your employees happy. You can solve up to 50% of your problems simply by keeping the employee happy.
