It’s now been three months since the Turner family had the scare of their lives. All four members of the family have been going to therapy due to the traumatic things they went through and saw. Everyone is doing so much better especially Zach. They actually feel like a family which they haven’t felt like one in a very long time. Before Zach seemed to want nothing to do with his family and just wanted to be with his friends but after almost losing his sister and dad, he wants to spend time with them as much as he can.
Y/N is somewhat closed to the Turner family since she tutors Zach’s little sister, Emily in Social Studies so she’s always at the Turner’s household at least two days a week. However, this week is different since both of Y/N’s parents are going to be away for the week so she’s going to be staying at the Turner’s house in the guest room. Emily is so happy and excited to have Y/N stay with them since she adores her. Even though Y/N tutors Zach’s sister and they go to the same school they are complete strangers since Y/N hangs out with the smart group while Zach hangs out with the popular group.
Y/N does wish that her and Zach have some kind of bond since she does have a growing crush on him. She has noticed a change in him since the accident. He is starting to spend a lot more time with his family. Before the accident when Y/N would be at the house to tutor Emily, Zach would either not be home or he would be hiding upstairs in his room.
********************
It was Y/N’s first morning in the Turner’s family’s house. She just got getting changed into a fresh pair of clothes for school and made her way out of the guest bedroom that was located downstairs. She walked into the kitchen to see Zach and Emily sitting at the table eating breakfast while Mrs. Turner was fixing her a plate. “Good morning, Y/N!” Mrs. Turner said with a soft smile. “Did you sleep alright?” Mrs. Turner asked her. “Yes, thank you so much for letting me stay here.” Y/N said with a kind smile. “It’s no problem, dear. Come sit down and eat.” Mrs. Turner reassured setting down a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon down in front of the empty seat next to Emily.
Y/N felt her nerves start to race since she is going to be sitting right across from Zach. This is going to be the closest she’s ever going to be near him. He probably won’t even notice her sitting there since he’s texting someone on his phone, so she walked over to the table and sat down next to Emily.
“Hurry up and eat. We have to leave soon.” Mrs. Turner told the kids and walked away so she could clean the kitchen up a little. As Y/N ate Emily was saying how excited she was to have her living with them for a week and everything they can do together. “Why don’t we watch a movie together tonight?” Emily asked Y/N. “Sure, sounds good to me.” Y/N told her and took a bite from one of the strips of bacon. “What about you Zach?” Emily said looking at her brother who was just staring down at his phone in his hands. At first Zach didn’t hear her but when she said his name for the second time, he looked up at her. “I’m sorry. What was the question?” Zach said putting his phone down onto the table next to his plate. “Do you want to watch a movie with Y/N and I tonight?” Emily asked him in a curious tone. When Zach looked at Y/N she quickly looked down at her plate of food. “Sure.” Zach said looking back at Emily with a nod.
Y/N could feel her heart race when Zach said he would join her and Emily tonight. Fuck, when is she going to get over this shy behavior.
As Y/N ate her breakfast she would sneak a glance at Zach who again put his attention back onto his phone. Y/N knew something was going on with Zach, but she didn’t have the courage to say anything. Also, even if she did ask what was bothering him why would he tell her? He barely knows her.
********************
Y/N was at school standing in the hallway at her locker. She was taking some of her textbooks out of her locker and putting them into her book bag. After she zipped up her bag, she saw Zach at his locker talking to two of his guy friends. She couldn’t help but stare. She watched him laugh at something one of his friends said to him. Her favorite thing about Zach has to be his smile. He just has that smile that just makes a girl’s heart rate speed up. Why is it so fucking hard to just say one fucking word to him?
“Okay, you seriously need to stop with the staring thing.” A voice said behind Y/N which startled her but relaxed when she saw that it was just her best friend Annabeth. “Shut up!” Y/N hissed as she looked down at her feet. “I don’t understand why you won’t just ask him out already. You tutor his little sister and you’re currently living in the same house as him for fucks sake.” Annabeth told her which made Y/N roll her eyes.
“Reason number one is that he has a girlfriend.” Y/N reminded her. “Second reason is that we associate with two completely different type of friends groups.” Y/N told her. “And third he wouldn’t want to go out with a shy and dorky girl like me.” Y/N said with a sigh. “Y/N, don’t say that.” Annabeth said with a frown on her face.
Y/N took a quick glance over at Zach and then let out a heavy sigh. “Just forget it.” Y/N said closing her locker and walked away. Annabeth let out a heavy sigh and followed her down the hallway.
********************
It was the end of the school day and Y/N just walked out of her last class of the day. She walked down the hallway to her locker so she could put a couple books of hers in there before she meets Zach outside since his mom will be picking them up. Before Y/N walked around a corner she heard a familiar voice yelling. When she saw that the voice belonged to Mila and the person, she was yelling at was Zach she hid behind the wall. She didn’t mean to ease drop but she just couldn’t help herself.
“I can’t fucking do this anymore!” Mila snapped at Zach with a fiery look in her eyes. “It’s like ever since that accident you’ve become a completely different person.” Mila added slamming her locker shut and walked away from a heartbroken Zach. Y/N couldn’t believe what she just saw happen.
Did Mila just break things off with Zach?
It all started to sense during breakfast. The reason why Zach kept staring at his phone was because he was expecting a text from Mila. Y/N saw the heartbreaking look in Zach’s memorizing brown eyes. If only she had the courage to comfort him.
********************
That night while Y/N watched a movie with Emily and Zach in the living room she would notice Zach was doing the same thing he did that morning. Y/N knew that Zach was completely head over heels for Mila that’s why he’s so heartbroken about what she said to him. It breaks Y/N’s heart to admit that, but she knows she doesn’t have a shot with Zach because they are polar opposites.
After the movie was over Zach and Emily went upstairs to their rooms for bed while Y/N went into the guest bedroom. She got changed into a pair of comfy pajamas and crawled into bed, but as time passed, she couldn’t fall asleep. No matter how many times she had tossed and turned she just couldn’t fall asleep.
As Y/N laid on her back staring up at the ceiling she heard footsteps coming from the kitchen. She decided to ignore it since it was probably just someone getting something to drink. However, when she heard a loud noise and a familiar voice let out a curse word, she decided to get out of bed to see what was going on.
Y/N opened the door to see Zach cleaning up a bag of chips he spilled all over the floor. She saw him struggling so she walked over to him and helped him. “Thanks.” Zach said in a soft voice. “No problem.” Y/N said standing up to throw the chips that she picked up into the trash. “Did I wake you up?” Zach asked as he cleaned up the rest of the mess. “I’m sorry if I did.” He added throwing away all of the spilled chips into the trash can. “No, I actually am having a hard time falling asleep.” Y/N told him. “Yeah, I am too.” Zach said with a sigh as he sat down at the table.
Y/N knew that he shouldn’t be alone at the moment, so she walked over to the table and sat down next to him. “I can sense that you need someone to talk to so if you want you can talk to me if you want to.” Y/N told him having the courage to let him talk to her. “Mila broke up with me at school today.” Zach told her with a frown. “Not to be nosey or anything but why did she break things off?” Y/N asked hoping he doesn’t think she’s nosey. “She’s mad because I’ve been ditching her to spend more time with my family.” Zach said as he looked anywhere but at Y/N.
“She doesn’t deserve you then.” Y/N blurted out which took him by surprise. “Huh?” Zach said looking at her. “I’ve noticed ever since the incident happened you’ve been spending more time with your family and there’s nothing wrong with that.” Y/N told him. “If she can’t see that family is more important than you don’t need her.” She told him as they stared into each other’s eyes. Zach didn’t say anything. Instead, he leaned in and connected his lips with hers which put her into shock.
She couldn’t believe that Zach’s lips were on hers. As they kissed, they both felt electricity shoot through their bodies. When the kiss broke Y/N’s breath was completely taken away. Zach was also in shock. “Sorry!” Zach said quickly getting up and walking up the steps back to his room.
********************
A week has now passed since Zach kissed Y/N. For the rest of the week, she stayed at the Turner’s house she didn’t say a word to Zach, and he didn’t say a word to her. But Y/N would feel Zach’s eyes on her and when she would look back at him, he would quickly look away. It’s like the roles between the two of them switched. She noticed that he would do the same thing at school in the hallway.
Y/N was in her own bedroom sitting on her bed reading a book when there was a knock on the door. “Come in.” She called out as she put her bookmark into her book and closed it. When the door opened, she was shocked to see that it was Zach. “Zach?” Y/N said in a surprised tone as she sat her book to the side. “Is this a bad time?” Zach asked walking into the room. “No, of course not.” Y/N said in reassurance as she stood up from her bed.
“I wanted to talk to you about the kiss.” Zach said which made Y/N’s heart rate speed up. “When you were telling me how Mila didn’t deserve me, I just had the urge to lean in and at the time I just thought it was just the heat of the moment and that it was just an accident.” Zach said which made her heart hurt a little. “Oh.” Y/N said looking down at the hardwood floor. Zach walked up to her and picked her head up, so she was looking up at him. “But as time went on, I realized the reason why I can’t stop thinking about it is because I have feelings for you.” Zach confessed making shock shoot through her body. “You like me?” We’re like complete opposites.” Y/N said as her body was still in shock. “Well, it’s like they say.” Zach said putting his hand on her cheek which made the butterflies in her stomach go crazy. “Sometimes opposites attract.” Zach said and leaned down to connect his lips with hers.
Y/N just melted into the kiss. As they kissed, they felt that same spark they felt when they kissed the first time. Even though they didn’t want to pull away they had to so they could get a breath of air.
“Do you want to go out to dinner with me tomorrow night?” Zach asked with a smile as he stroked her cheek gently with his thumb. “Yes!” Y/N said with a big smile as she leaned into his touch.

<3
Your face was covered in shock as you watched Zach's father hold out a gun. You were already scared, the fact that there was a bomb in the car made you feel sick to your stomach.
You really thought it would be a normal day, but you had seen 3 people die in one morning.
You watched as Zach and Emily's mom was taken by the police, teams of police officers chasing down the car that you were inside of.
You had no clue what was going on, and it stressed you out knowing you couldn't do anything about it.
"I'm sorry Y/n, I'm so sorry sweetheart. You shouldn't be here right now" Matt mumbled with a shaky voice.
You could tell just from that, that were tears forming in his eyes.
"Dad... Dad don't do this!" Zach's eyebrows were furrowed, his body shaking slightly from his scared heartbeat.
"Dad don't" Emily was breathing heavily next to Zach, his hand squeezing hers tightly.
"Dad don't! Listen, okay? He's your friend"
Your heart shattered with how frightened he sounded, but you couldn't speak. You were too scared. You usually loved the rush, but this felt disgusting and dangerous.
"God forgive me" The words that fell from Matts lips were unbelievable. There was no way he was about to kill his best friend. His long-time business partner.
You didn't know Matt very well. But you knew Matt and Anders well. They were always together at gatherings, drinking and joking around like they always did.
They would tease you and Zach about getting together, you knew it would never happen. But knowing they support your small delusion made you feel better.
"Matt! Let me go!" Anders looked terrified, the gun held up to his face didn't help it either.
"Dad! Dad! He's your friend! What are you doing?"
"Dad! Don't!" Emily was now clung onto Zach, tears forming in her eyes as she watched the horrific scene.
"I can't..."
You squeezed your eyes shut, expecting to see a mutilated body once you opened your eyes.
Except that didn't happen, instead your eyes were surprised at the train that rushed in front of them. Your hearing was interrupted by the loud sound of screeching metal and a loud horn.
Heavy breathing filled the car, a harsh swallow falling down your throat.
You thought you were safe, for a split second. But everything happened so fast.
Wood and glass exploded throughout the car, bullets breaking through the metal doors of the car.
A powerful cloud of smoke made you cover yourself, but instead of protecting yourself, you put your body in more danger.
The car shook before you could even look at the explosion next to you, pain covering your entire body.
Your breath scattered, looking at the bloody hole in your arm. It had all happened so fast. You felt a dart of pain and next thing you knew you were covered in blood.
"Are you okay?" Matt turned around, looking at his children before he even glanced over at you.
"Y/n? Y/n?"
A ball formed in your throat, the pain making your mouth explode with small cries.
"Shit! Shit! Y/n, Y/n! She's bleeding. She got shot!"
Your body fell cold, trying to control your breathing as blood soaked into you and Zach's clothing.
Painful whimpers fell from your mouth, feeling Zach's hand lift your arm.
"Shit"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry babe, I know it hurts."
He wrapped his dad's tie around your wound, It hurt but his words made you feel better. Your heart started beating faster, and you weren't sure if it was because of him or the shot through your arm.
"Tie it tight, Zach"
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" You ought to think he was the one who shot you with how much he was apologizing.
You yelped at the pressure being put on your limb. Blood soaked through the cloth quickly and you felt sick.
"Hang on Y/n, Hang on. We're gonna get you some help" You gulped at Matt's words, your head falling onto Zach's chest.
He held you tighter in real life than in your dreams. He didn't want to lose you, you were his person. He loved you, he needed you.
His hand was covered in your blood but he refused to let go. The warm liquid covered the seats and it stained his skin, but he didn’t care.
It felt like forever before the police started to chase the car, Anxiety no longer took over your head, it just felt empty and painful.
Your vision blurred, noises and words becoming quieter and mumbled.
The car finally came to a stop, Zach holding onto your hand tightly.
"Are you okay?" A lady came up to the car, looking through the broken windows.
"She's hurt, please. She's lost a lot of blood. We need help" They didn’t believe Matt, but once she saw the bloody seats she had no choice.
"How are you, sweetheart?" Her face was serious when you asked, making you question her sanity.
"Are you serious? I'm dying" She could read your face, yet you couldn't read hers.
All you wanted was for the pain to go away, to get out of the car and feel better.
But you couldn't. The bomb made it impossible to leave.
"There are no bombs under the children's seats. We're taking off the car doors now"
They unscrewed the ruined car doors, a man reaching over your seatbelt before unbuckling it.
"Zach..." He gulped with glossy eyes as he realized he was still holding onto your hand.
"Is he your boyfriend?" The anticlimactic lady asked and you just shrugged, Zach giving you a small smile.
You were taken to an ambulance, Zach and Emily following not long after.
"You lost a lot of blood, but you'll be fine"
As if that would make you feel any better. You laid lazily on the stretcher, Thankfully the bullet wasn't stuck in your arm, so no surgery was needed.
Instead, you zoned out on anesthesia, stitches being sewn into your arm.
For some odd reason, you weren't allowed to leave the crime scene. So Heather accompanied you in the back of the ambulance.
"They called your mom again, I'm sorry sweetheart. How do you feel? Are you okay? Do you need anything?"
Her motherly instincts brought you comfort, something yours didn't have. She wasn't even in town, which was why Matt had to take you to school.
But you weren't at school, yet you didn't think your mom would even care to ask you about the accident. 30 minutes had passed and she didn't even care to call, they had to call her again.
"He's taking off, Mrs. Turner" Your heart felt empty as she ran off to get her husband, Zach, and Emily running Into the ambulance.
"Y/n, are you okay? How do you feel? What did they do?" Zach's voice was fast, making you smile up at him.
"I'm fine Zach, they just gave me some stitches. Are you guys okay?" Emily tried to smile as she nodded, but Zach could only focus on you.
"Emily, leave"
"What? Why? Are you gonna kiss Y/n?"
You smiled as they fought, even after the most traumatic experience of their lives they still bickered.
"Please, Emily?" She huffed before standing outside the ambulance.
"Sorry about your shirt" You mumbled. It was dyed with the color of your blood, a dark red covering the grey fabric.
"It's fine..."
He looked nervous as he went to hold your hand, reaching out before pulling back.
"Hey, it's okay. We're alive" You took it upon yourself to take his hand, his warmth giving you comfort.
"I know...but my dad"
You frowned, letting out a small sigh before readjusting yourself to be sat up.
"Careful, be careful"
"I'm fine Zach, chill" You smiled while looking up at him, his eyes basically drilling holes into yours.
He didn't get how after all of that you still managed to look so beautiful. Your hair was messy and your skin was covered in blood, but you still looked pretty.
"I look ugly, I know" He furrowed his eyebrows before shaking his head, opening his mouth before hesitating.
“You look beautiful…even covered in blood” He scoffed as butterflies exploded in your stomach.
You didn’t want him to notice how your face lit up with every pet name and compliment, but he did.
“This is a really bad time for this but, I need to tell you”
“What is it? You can talk to me” You gave his hand a small squeeze, pulling it closer to your body.
“When I saw you bleed I really thought you were gonna die. And I wanted to tell you this in case you did…”
You furrowed your eyebrows at his words as he continued to speak. The words that fell from his lips leaving you in shock.
“I love you. I don’t know what It feels like but I think I feel it for you. And I wouldn’t want anything this horrible to ever happen to you again.”
You felt yourself melt at his sweet words. But as he rambled you smiled to yourself, pulling his arm closer towards you.
“I get it Zach, I love you too”
His smile brightened your face, a soft kiss being placed on your lips before Em’s squeal interrupted the moment.
“I knew you two liked each other!”
“Em! Shut up!”

WOLF PACK BEAT BRUINS LAST SUNDAY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Gerry Cantlon, Howlings PROVIDENCE, RI—The Hartford Wolf Pack ended the Providence Bruins' five-game winning streak. Brett Berard scored his team-high 19th goal, and Bobby Trivigno added two quality assists in a critical 5-2 road victory, solidifying the team's fourth-place positioning. The Pack game-winning goal came when Berard, the team's leading goal scorer and local hero, gathered in a shot by his former collegiate teammate Mitch Callahan, who missed the net entirely. In center ice, Berard collected the loose biscuit, turned on the jets, and then left the Bruins defense in the dust, racing in on goal and firing from off the left wing past Brandon Bussi for his 19th goal of the season at 6:02. Berard is tied for the third most goals in the AHL with former first-round pick Shane Wright of the Coachella Valley Firebirds. In the third period, the Baby Bruins pulled within a goal at 3-2 when Anthony Richard, fresh off a nine-game recall stint to the parent team in Boston, took a pass from Alex Regula, an AHL-leading plus-33, along the right boards in the offensive zone. Richard breezed past Nikolas Brouillard, who was caught flat-footed, went backhand to forehand, and sent his 20th goal of the campaign over Dylan Garand's glove-hand at 5:39. The Wolf Pack defense clamped down the rest of the way, only allowing the Bruins three shots as the Pack added two empty netters a minute apart, first by Anton Blidh, his seventh, and Turner Elson, his fifth, to secure two valuable regulation wins points. The Pack started off the second as they did the first with an early goal. Anthony Richard had the period's first shot for the Bruins, but the Pack would score first. Bryan Yoon earned his first AHL point with a goal that came from a rocket of a shot off a drop pass by Cameron Hillis at 1:58 to re-establish the lead. For Hillis, it was his first AHL point. Trivigno made a strong play in the neutral zone to get the puck up to Hillis. The Wolf Pack had the kind of fast start a road team wants. They had the game’s first five shots and scored a goal in the first minute. After missing two games, Karl Henriksson was back in the lineup. He curled in the right-wing circle, hit Bussi’s pads with a shot, and the puck trickled over the goal line. It was his ninth of the year and came at 49 seconds. It was Henriksson's first goal since January 31st and was the fastest Wolf Pack start to a game this season, shattering the previous mark set by Blake Hillman at 2:14. The Pack made a line change at 30 seconds. Then, on the second shift for Brennan Othmann, they almost scored. Othmann intercepted a pass meant for Patrick Brown and had a clean breakaway from the Pack blue line. Othmann's shot hit the post, and the rebound came back to Bussi, who covered up the loose change. The Bruins' Ian Mitchell tied it at a goal apiece with his fourth of the season when Henriksson went out to block the attempt but created an upper screen in the defensive zone, blinding Garand, who was making back-to-back starts. Bruin Jacob Zrobil, after the team won the draw, headed to the net for a rolling screen. At 6:17, Garand was peeking around several players when a right-handed shot from the left point launched the shot he never saw. LINES: Jake Leschyshyn-Brett Berard-Brennan Othman Karl Henriksson-Adam Sýkora- Anton Blidh Cameron Hillis-Tyler Pitlick-Bobby Trivigno Turner Elson-Blade Jenkins- Ryder Korczak Matt Robertson-Nikolas Brouillard Mac Hollowell-Brandon Scanlin Bryan Yoon-Blake Hillman Dylan Garand Olof Lindbom SCRATCHES: Ben Harpur (upper body, indefinitely) Louie Domingue (lower body, day-to-day) Riley Nash (lower body, day-to-day) Connor Mackey (upper body, week-to-week) Matej Pekar (lower body, week-to-week) Tag Bertuzzi (healthy) Zach Berzolla (healthy) NOTES: Berzolla was recalled from the Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) and arrived having scored one goal in two games. The Interim Head Coach had a different configuration to his lineup for the eighth consecutive game. The Pack is solidly in fourth place, one point behind third-place Wilkes Barre/Scranton, 10 behind Providence, and still three ahead of Charlotte. With his second-period fight, Brouillard is the team's top PIM guy (106). The two teams will hook up next Friday in a rematch at the XL Center on P.J. Stock Bobblehead Night. Stock played for both teams in his 11-year junior, college, and pro career. It was the Wolf Pack’s first five-goal effort in a little over a month. The Wolf Pack swept the Three Star Awards on the road 1. Brett Berard 2. Bryan Yoon, and 3. Bobby Trivigno. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOWLINGS Read the full article

Dad Letter 082221
Tumblr media
22 August, 2021
Dear Dad--
Happy what for you will be Sunday! Perhaps I should just say happy weekend. It’s Saturday morning here in the trailer and it seems like we’re going to catch some of Hurricane Henri sometime about Monday or Tuesday. I am excited by this! I’ve mentioned how our single-wide leaked like a sieve from the windows along its west wall. Well, in response to our maintenance request, they sent a dude around to come fix it. I believe caulk, or otherwise some big tube of silicone sealant in a dispensing gun (pew! pew!) was employed. We still have our original leak; water always comes in through the top of our back door. The dude put the magic caulk on that thing too, but it’s like original sin...it’s just always gonna be there. It’s the leak where the previous tenants installed plastic hooks on the door, to hang towels on, to catch the leaks.
I spent some time on the internet yesterday and got myself some medical benefits! I now have medical, dental, and vision coverages. I don’t know when they start, but I’m going to search for a dentist some more today. I tried the area’s largest family dentistry, a place with (I’m guessing) maybe 20 dentists working in it, and their website says they have no available appointments. This seems unlikely, but not impossible. I think there’s a problem with the scheduling website, or else they’re having a surge of business before school starts, or something else temporary. Either way, I’ll find a dentist. The dental pain which I’ve come to live with and treat with Ibuprofen every day may soon be a thing of the past.
I don’t suppose I can avoid mentioning that I’m still having problems with depression. I have a few online friends who’ve been super helpful while I seem to be in this downswing, and I’m hoping to get rid of it, and return to my usual sarcastic-yet-ebullient self soon. (You don’t need to suggest exercising, I can actually hear you thinking it from here. Got to admit, I kind of wish I owned a weight bench.) I believe at least some of the depression stems from having no circle of friends. I have, at best, a very tiny triangle of friends. The three components of the friend triad would be: husband, cats and coworkers, and Mr. and Mr. plant scientist guy. I was going to go with Zach to plant scientist guy’s home today to eat, but instead I’m going to stay home and eat worms and feel sorry for myself. (Zach suggested I might like some “me” time, and I’m not keen to inflict myself upon anyone just now anyway.) Also I have lots of work shirts to iron.
I’m actually looking forward to work tomorrow, just a little bit, even though it’s my Monday. My boss has suggested in advance that I do 6 of the 7 audits tomorrow, and I don’t think I’ve ever done 6 in a day before. I especially haven’t attempted to do 6 on a Sunday, since we always audit the previous day’s stuff, which means I’d be auditing a Saturday, typically a busy time. I’m confident that I can do it, however. I can do each of those 6 audits in about an hour, and that gives me a whole two extra hours for “shit happens.” I like knowing how to do all that stuff. There’s a good chance I’ll get through all 6 audits without having any questions, or any problems I can’t solve myself.
And it’s going to be September soon! That always gets me excited, since that’s when I start my two month scary movie marathon, beginning with Night of the Demon, from 1957. I’ve reached a point where, as soon as I hear that movie begin, I relax a bit, because I know summer is over. Also, a lot of my favorite movies are in that genre, including a bunch of British ones, and a bunch with extremely unconvincing monsters. But that’s when I watched The Thing From Another World (1951), and The Fog, and the original Amityville Horror, and The Changeling, with George C. Scott. Good stuff! And, of course, the two months culminate on Halloween, when I watch a couple I saved for last, and we eat all the candy we bought, because children generally know better than to come to a trailer park during the time of plague resurgence in search of things to put in their mouths, that they KNOW FOR CERTAIN was just handled by a stranger.
Actually, I think the way they do Halloween now is: everyone buys candy and drives to church, and everyone else brings their kids, and the kids just visit each car for candy, one after the other. It doesn’t sound like it provides as much walking as the traditional way of trick-or-treating, and it seems to reduce the possibility of criminal mischief to near zero. (I’m just thinking you can’t TP someone’s house when you’re gathering candy in the church parking lot.) But it preserves some of the elements of the old fashioned style. Halloween is a great holiday, mostly because I like watching the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown special. I’m one of the few people that loves every second of that TV special, even the WW1 parts where Snoopy gets shot down behind enemy lines by the Red Baron. That show has some great jazz music in it.
I received something kind of cool in the mail today, a 16 x 100 inch roll of dichroic film. What the shit is that, you ask? Well, you see it in holiday decorations a lot. It’s a colored film that changes color depending on the angle from which you’re viewing it. It’ll also do stuff like: light passing through it is blue, but light bouncing off it is bright orange. It’s just a film you can use to tint plastic and windows that make pretty colors. I have tinted two windows in our metal living tube with it! I’ll include the pictures. It sticks on with soapy water, and is supposed to peel right off when it comes time to move out and take all my disco shit with me. I’m considering putting a couple of small patches of it on my car, just because it’s so pretty. I’ll include a pic of the dichroic film. By now, as you’ve probably concluded, they use that dichroic glass in certain disco lights.
I have a few things happening, but it’s a slow period. I have already put some of the dichroic film on the bathroom window and the window in the back door, which we never open. As predicted, it is pretty as fuck! I want to cover my car windows with it, but I checked, and I’m pretty sure that would be illegal in Maine. Auto window tint has to allow at least 30% of light to pass through (no worries, and with disco colors!) and it has to be non-reflective (shit! Mine is super reflective!) Just taking a picture of some balled-up leftover bits of the dichroic film is pretty. Anything you can scrunch up into a ball and take a beautiful picture of it MUST be special.
I was afraid, for a period, that I had done something to kill my ability to read books for fun! I know I’ve been anhedonic lately, but I’m pretty sure that I haven’t smoked enough drugs to make myself illiterate. Then, as an experiment, I picked up a Jack Reacher book, and read all 450 pages in about a day. I am pleased to report that I have neither smoked myself illiterate, nor forgotten how to enjoy a good page-turner. This pleases me!
More next week! All my love to you both!

1x10 discussion questions
one season down, two to go!!! this has been so much fun y’all. i've watched s1 all by my onesies a totally normal amount of times but watching with all of you is it’s own kind of delight. your jokes and your takes are a+++. truly enhance the experience. and i know i say it every week but a sincere thank you to @pynkhues for organizing and all the work you put into it.
ANYWAY enough of the gross emo stuff.
1. What was your favourite scene of the episode? Tell us why!
this is a question with an objectively correct answer and it’s when dean gets hit by a car. the last scene is p good too i guess.
2. Was there any scene that missed the mark for you? And if so, how?
the line dancing scene chills me to my core but that says more about my feelings about line dancing than the scene itself. it’s not so much that it misses the mark as much as i consider it a personal attack on part with repeatedly saying sauce arms and making me remember the bandaid.
3. Let’s start from the top! That scene with Rio and Turner! This is our first ever Rio POV scene, and a lot of crucial information is delivered in it – from what Rio’s like as a crime boss to the situation with Eddie. What do you make of this scene? And do you think Rio ever saw Turner as a real threat?
rio saw turner as a whole ass snack and he was right
4. It’s Beth and Dean’s twentieth anniversary! Beth warms to him again over the course of this episode before the cancer lie is revealed. What do you think the trajectory of Beth and Dean’s relationship would’ve looked like if the lie hadn’t been revealed?
eventually beth would’ve taken out the trash. i don’t think there’s a version of the two of them that would work long term as long as beth is coming more and more into herself through crime and dean is, you know, dean. would’ve totally derailed the brio pacing though so someone get that doctor a medal.
5. Annnnd on a related note, do you think the cancer lie is lost to us forever, or that the show might still throw it back on the table at some point?
i have deep seated tv-related trust issues so i’ve convinced myself that no we won’t so i can’t be any more disappointed than i already am
6. Ben has his first few days at St. Anne’s, and it goes well, despite Annie’s reservations. Do you think Greg was right to change Ben’s schooling? Do you think Annie was right in having her reservations? Or is it some combination of both?
as a product of a catholic school elementary environment i feel extremely qualified to say that catholic school kids will fuck you up and annie was absolutely justified in her reservations. that said, clearly the public school kids were also fucking ben up so greg was in the right too. the moral of the story is kids are assholes.
7. What do you think the show might be saying with the fact that Annie’s son finds safety at a school called St. Anne’s?
you know i never connected those dots before. it’s a little on the nose but it makes me go awwwww so i’ll allow it.
8. What do you think of the Fine & Frugal job overall? Do you think it was a good idea to set Rio up in the way that they did? Do you think it was a good way to get the money for Sara’s transplant?
the (second!! second!!!!) fine & frugal job was, to put it mildly, extremely stupid. just the fact that they robbed it for the second time is enough but oh my GOD the rio portion of the plan tips it over the edge. it’s too many levels of stupid i can’t list them all. it’s the girls at their most short sighted and it makes me want to bang my head against the nearest flat surface.
THAT SAID one thing that i’ve always really loved about the show is the girls are like, truly awful at crime in many ways and fairly consistently reap the consequences of that. i love that they’re sort of bumbling their way to success with their individual talents and determination but not being like, smooth criminals or whatever. i’ve watched the version of this show where that happens (*stares in weeds*) and it’s infuriating.
9. What do you think of the scene with Tyler at the end and how he let the girls off the hook in exchange for getting to be the hero? What do you think this tells us about the overall themes of the show?
i love the hell out of tyler that pure hearted himbo. i know there are deeper thoughts here around male entitlement and how it’s seen through characters like boomer and dean and turner and rio but it’s late and my brain is there. i do like how it’s mmmmmm underscored? subverted? by tyler basically asking annie to make it seem like he’s someone to be taken seriously. it reminds me of a little kid asking for help playing dress up or make believe. idk idk idk pretend i said something smart.
10. Mary Pat discovers Boomer’s been spying on her! It leads to one of my favourite fights of the entire series between Mary Pat and Boomer! What do you think that fight told us about Mary Pat and Boomer’s relationship so far, and who each of them are as people?
Tumblr media
mary-pat was deeply wronged and in a different ‘verse is bffs with the girls. JUSTICE FOR MARY-PAT
11. On a related note, what did you think of Mary Pat going to Beth with the news?
i love it, for as much as mary-pat tries to walk tall and carry a big stick or whatever, as soon as stuff starts falling apart her first instinct is to run to her crime mom for help. THEY SHOULD BE FRIENDS DAMMIT.
12. Beth throws down a pretty big bluff with Annie and Ruby about going to Canada to take over Rio’s business. Do you think she actually intended to go through with it? Or do you think she was just joking? Or was it something in between?
you know how sometimes people tell jokes that are so funny hahahaha but also omg you guys what if we really did it? it’s one of those.
13. In 100 words or less, please describe your emotional journey in watching Stan find out what Ruby had done for the money to save Sara.
N O
14. Annie and Greg have a pivotal moment together as co-parents at the end of this episode. Do you think this is a satisfying culmination to their arc across this season? And do you see any sort of future for them as a couple overall?
probs not any time soon bc i think zach gilford got another job but i hope so bc i love them lEaVE mE aLoNE
15. That! Final! Scene! Between! Beth! Rio! And! Dean! So much emotion! Give us all your thoughts, comments, feelings! And pretend you were yet to see s2 - what would you predict the outcome would be?
i love literally (like, actually literally) every single thing about this scene. truly god tier and we haven’t even gotten to the dean gets shot/face-touching/E L I Z A B E T H stuff. i’m trying to remember what i thought when i first watched this but honestly i think i was just mashing the next episode button over and over like some kind of psychotic chimpanzee on meth bc netflix wasn’t loading fast enough.

Lies Sleeping timeline
Guys, it turns out three weeks without internet was what I needed to complete this, even though this book has an actual real-world event that can be tied to a specific date in a specific year, and I didn’t have to do any back-calculations from sunset times or solstices AT ALL. It’s like a tiny curative fandom miracle.
Main takeaways: Lies Sleeping takes place over about two months! I’m as surprised as you are. It read like one very hellish week. Also, we still have nearly a full year to go in book-canon time before the Brexit referendum. how many books do we wanna bet BA can cram in there before Peter & co have to join the rest of us in The Darkest Timeline.
Check out the other timelines and my series timeline here on DW (or in the ‘timelines’ tag on my Tumblr.)
14 Nov 2014: Operation Jennifer begins (prologue)
Dec/Jan 2014/5: The unwritten Kimberley Reynolds novella takes place, prior to the events of this book, and involves the ‘centre of a small town’ being ‘levelled’
Early June 2015: Peter passes his detective exams (Detective Stories)
Day 1 (Sunday June 7th): Peter, Guleed, Carey, and Nightingale stake out Richard Williams' house and fight the Pale Nanny/Charlotte Greenwood. That night, Peter has dinner with Bev, Nicky, and Abigail at Bev’s house. Day 2: (Monday June 8th): Peter wakes up at the Folly and spends time in the gym, has breakfast with the team, visits the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and finds the magic bell, then goes to check on Williams. Charlotte Greenwood triggers Williams’ murder tattoo and is shot by Lucy the security guard. Peter attends Charlotte’s autopsy with Walid and Vaughan.
Day 3/4 (Tues/Wed June 9th/10th):  Peter does community outreach trying to find out where Charlotte came from and calls Kim Reynolds, probably early on Wednesday morning his time (it’s ‘past 8pm in Washington’, meaning it’s past 1am in London. An early sign of how hard Peter’s pushing himself.)
Day 5 (Thursday June 11th): Peter checks on Zach, talks to Marcia the magical-weed selling canal traveller, has an uninformative visit with Walbrook, and spends the night at Beverley’s. Day 6 (Friday June 12th): Peter has IPCC interviews all day about Charlotte’s death, spends some time guarding the bell at the foundry, then heads back to Bev’s.
Day 7/8 (Saturday/Sunday June 13th/14th): Nicky comes over to Bev’s very early. Peter does some Latin practice and notices how quiet the Folly feels after-hours now.  Day 10 (Tuesday June 16th): Michelle Obama visits London, diverting Guleed and Nightingale’s attention. Lesley shows up at foundry while Peter is there and he doesn’t have Frank Caffrey shoot her. They destroy the bell. Day 11-13 (Wednesday-Friday, June 17th-19th): Peter reads the terrible movie script, gets back Postmartin’s notes on it, and talks to Kim Reynolds again.  Day 14-15 (Saturday/Sunday, June 20th/21st): Peter travels with Beverley and Abigail to Father Thames’ Summer Court and spends the night there. On the Sunday he’s called back to London by Stephanopoulos to talk to Geneviève Nguyễn about the ritual sacrifice in the City.  Day 16 (Monday June 22nd): Peter and Nightingale interview Patrick Gale and talk about magic becoming public.  Day 20 (Friday June 26th:) Team meeting
Day 21-26 (Saturday-Thursday June 27th-Jul 2nd): They’re called to the MOLA at 3 in the morning over an attempted break-in; Peter takes notes and does follow-up.  Day 27 (Friday July 3rd): Peter follows Zach to Lesley’s apartment Day 28 (Saturday July 4th): Peter goes back to Folly, sleeps for some of the day, and interviews Zach in the afternoon.  Day 29 (Sunday July 5th): Peter consults Nightingale about sources of information on Punch and talks to Sir William via Lady Ty. He ends up in A&E, and walks back to Folly after midnight. Day 30 (Monday July 6th): A ‘tea committee’ meeting is held, and Peter goes to restatement Camilla Turner the archaeologist. Day 31 (Tuesday July 7th): Peter goes through Turner’s emails and visits the Paternoster Society’s meeting place. Day 32 (Wednesday July 8th): Peter and Bev have dinner with Isis and Oxley, who are in town for the opera. Peter is given a prophecy.  Day 33 (Thursday July 9th): Lesley calls Peter to warn him a River is being kidnapped. Walbrook is rescued from Chorley and his tinned vampire in an epic car chase. Day 34 (Friday July 10th): Peter goes to another meeting, takes his mum shopping, and has a haircut. Bev and he stay over at his parents’ place. Day 35/36 (Saturday/Sunday July 11th/12th): Peter takes the weekend off, by order, and helps Maksim do some planting on Wimbledon Common.  Day 37 (Monday July 13th): David Carey goes on medical leave. Lesley calls Peter and they meet at a pub. He leaves and gets into a police car. It’s Lesley, and she kidnaps him.  Day 38-45 (Tuesday July 14th - Tuesday July 21st): Peter has Fun Torture Time with Lesley and Chorley and spends a week in an oubliette with Foxglove. By Sunday he’s made friends with her, and on the second Tuesday she tells him her story.  Day 46 (Wednesday July 22nd): Chorley and Lesley visit and Peter hears bell noises and swearing. That evening, Foxglove releases him from durance vile and he reunites with Bev at the Folly.  Day 47 (Thursday July 23rd): Peter and Abigail talk to foxes; Molly is absent.  Day 48 (Friday July 24th): Peter and his mum cook for everybody at the Folly; that night, he and Nightingale see Foxglove and Molly dancing.  Day 49 (Saturday July 25th): All hell breaks loose; Lesley shoots Stephanopoulos (in the leg) and Chorley ‘dies’ in a van crash.
Day 50 (Sunday July 26th): Nightingale goes to Glastonbury and Guleed to the Midlands. Peter goes to visit Punch and makes Caffrey and Beverley worried he’s suicidal. That night, he confronts Chorley and Lesley at Covent Garden and Lesley shoots Chorley (in the head).
Late July: Peter is suspended while Chorley’s death is investigated. He’s told it will be for months.  August: Nightingale begins a school for amateur practitioners; Foxglove is established at the  Folly; Peter and Bev go on a double date with Sahra and Michael. Late August: Beverley tells Peter she’s pregnant. By inference, she’s due sometime between February and April 2016 (depending on how far along she is when she tells Peter).

Filmed with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups; slight washout in some of the wides, but nothing too terrible. No significant obstruction, good clear sound and picture; good video.

SUMMER | THURSDAY, 19:56 - SALTY PAWS SALOON, BRINDLETON BAY
♫♪ Salty Paws ambient music ♫♪ ► Spangle Call Lilli Line - nm
Tumblr media
Everyone took a few gulps of beer, save for Zach who downed his in one shot.
Tumblr media
EVERLY: Whoa there, Zach! Slow down, we’re gonna be here for another 3 hours or so.
ZACH: But you already know it takes me two drinks to loosen up.
AUDREY: So it’s yours! I was wondering why there was a glass on the bar.
ARIA: He’s such a regular here that the barkeep makes one for him before he even sits down.
Tumblr media
EVERLY: [low voice, to Aria] Why did you have to get him started on that show? Now that’s the only thing he’ll talk about tonight.
ZACH: Do you drink, Audrey?
AUDREY: Only sometimes. Like, when there’s an occasion. You drink every day?
Tumblr media
ZACH: Mmm, I drink something strong to make myself fall asleep at night. Then coffee brings me to life in the mornings.
AUDREY: Oh... wow. Can’t sleep?
Tumblr media
ZACH: Comes with the job, but I won’t complain. I love what I’m doing. It’s a dark world we live in, but I’m proud to have written my share of stories that shake up the status quo, one way or another.
EVERLY: [to Aria] This beat is such a bop! Why aren’t you dancing?
ARIA: I... - I can’t.
Tumblr media
EVERLY: It’s really simple! Come, dance with me. Just start by grooving to the beat... Yes, that’s it! Keep going... Now -
An incoming call cut her off.
EVERLY: Wifey.
Tumblr media
EVERLY: You keep dancing, Aria! Don’t stop ‘till I tell you to. - Yes, honey? Oh, okay. Yeah I know. Wait, what?
DALLAS: - and I just can’t stop appreciating the heck out of Aidan Turner. I mean, even though you’re straight, you’ve got eyes, right?! Sam Witwer just pales in comparison.
DEVIN: Oh, come on Dell! That’s all just skin deep!
Tumblr media
EVERLY: You sure you okay there? I can come right over now, you know!
ARIA: (Everly, can I stop dancing already? Please tell me to stop.)
ZACH: A mystery writer, huh?
AUDREY: Yeah. But I think I like journalism too. I can see how it’s really connected to detective work and shrouded in mystery, in its own way.
ZACH: You got that right.
Whilst everyone was engrossed in their own business, no one noticed two familiar figures walking past them into a quieter corner of the bar.

Anxiety With a Happy Ending
Zach Turner x Reader
Warnings: Anxiety, Adult Language, Jealousy, Mention of Vehicle Crash, Mention of Daddy Issues, Mention of Stealing Alcohol, Angst but with Fluff at the end, and Maybe Some Grammar Errors.
Description: Y/N has been trying to get in contact with her Best Friend who she secretly has feelings for all day but has gotten nothing. But, once she hears about what happened that morning her Anxiety takes over her entire body.
Word Count: 1,763
Author’s Note: Hello Everyone! My first Zach Turner one shot is finally here and I apologize if it’s a little short! I kinda lost inspiration towards the end. Sorry about the description being short too! I’m bad at writing descriptions because I’m scared I’m going to spoil too much.
Tumblr media
Y/N was sitting in her last period of the day. As her teacher rambled on about a topic, she didn’t give a shit about she kept glancing down at her phone that was sitting right beside her textbook. Early this morning she had been texting her best friend Zach. She was trying her best to talk him out of cutting school with the bad girl of the school who is also a year older and one grade level up than them. Ever since he met the girl, he’s been acting out. Not that Y/N is surprised by him acting out because she knows he’s just trying to get his father’s attention, but she doesn’t want him to get into big trouble with not just his parents but with the school as well.
However, ever since she arrived at school, she hasn’t heard from him. The last text she received from him said that he got busted, so he will be at school, but she hasn’t seen him at all. They have about every class together and he hasn’t shown up to one of them.
Y/N has been trying her best to not worry, but every time she glances at her phone her nerves begin to pace. She glanced over to her left at the empty desk and chair where Zach sits. She felt her anxiety rising, so she took a deep breath to calm her nerves down.
She saw her phone light up, so she quickly picked up her phone. She was hoping it was a text from Zach, but it wasn’t. The number was unknown, but in the text, it read that it was from Mila, the girl Zach has been hanging out with. Mila told her to meet her outside of the school because she needs to talk with her which confused Y/N. How did Mila get her phone number and why does she want her to meet her at the front of the school. Y/N really didn’t want to meet up with Mila since she wants nothing to do with that bad influence, but then again, Mila might know where Zach is or have heard from him. She quickly sent Mila a text back letting her know that she will be there.
After Y/N hit the send button the bell rung signaling that the long school day was finally over. Y/N put her phone in the pocket of her sweatshirt and started to pack her stuff back into her book bag. She stood up from her chair grabbing her book bag off the floor and wrapped the straps over her shoulders. She walked out of the classroom and into the busy hallway.
Y/N decided to stop by her locker before she met up with Mila. She quickly opened her locker and put some of the books that were in her book bag into her locker since she didn’t need to take them home with her. After she was done, she closed her locker and zipped her book bag back up. Again, Y/N had to squeeze her way through the busy hallway to get to the front doors of the school. “Got to fucking love high school.” Y/N mumbled to herself with a roll of her eyes as she squeezed by people.
When she finally walked outside, she felt like she could finally breathe fresh air. She looked around till her eyes spotted Mila on the side street leaning on her motor bike. As Y/N walked closer to Mila she noticed the front over her bike was all banged up. “What the fuck took you so long?” Mila asked her in a nasty tone in her voice. “Oh, I’m sorry. Are you in a rush to go steal alcohol from the liquor store?” Y/N shot back which made Mila let out a harsh laugh. “I love how you think you know me.” Mila said as she folded her arms over her chest. “Are you in a bitchy mood because you crashed your bike into something?” Y/N asked in an annoyed tone. “I crashed my bike into the back of Zach’s dad’s car.” Mila told her which made Y/N’s heart rate speed up.
“So, you have seen Zach today.” Y/N said still annoyed. Did Zach lie to her saying he was really coming to school when in reality he wasn’t. “Yeah, for like a fucking minuet.” Mila told her crossing off Y/N’s theory. “What? What happened?” Y/N asked now confused, but her anxiety rising again. “I was just riding my bike down the street behind them when his dad just randomly slammed on his breaks making me crash into the back of his car.” Mila said explaining what happened this morning in annoyance in her voice. “Was everyone alright?” Y/N asked as her anxiety was taking over her body. “I don’t know. His dad just sped away.” Mila said with a shrug.
“That’s why I wanted you to meet up with me. I haven’t seen or spoken to Zach since that happened.” Mila added as she stood up straight. “No, I haven’t spoken to him since this morning, and I haven’t seen him.” Y/N answered her questions. “Great.” Mila said with a heavy sigh. “I have to walk past Zach’s house to get to mine, so I’ll see if he’s home.” Y/N told her trying to hide the worry that was rising in her veins. “Okay, can you text me an update.” Mila asked her.
Y/N did see some worry in Mila’s eyes which made her jealous. Is Y/N jealous of the type of person Mila is? Fuck no! Is she jealous of all the attention Zach has been giving Mila? Fuck yes! But is this the time to be petty towards Mila? No, that can wait. “Yeah.” Y/N answered with a nod and started her way down the sidewalk.
Y/N was able to keep her nerves on the down low all day till what Mila just told her. There’s no way that she can keep her anxiety levels down now. All she kept thinking about was Zach and if he is alright. She doesn’t know what she would do if something happened to him. Y/N hasn’t told anyone this, but she’s started to develop feelings for her brunette-haired best friend. That’s why she gets jealous when Zach spends most of his time with Mila.
When Y/N got to Zach’s house she felt her heart drop. There was nothing but police cars around the house and two officers were blocking the front door. “What the fuck is going on?” Y/N whispered to herself. She quickly ran down the sidewalk to her house that was just down the street. She ran up to her front door and unlocked the door. When she walked inside her house, she dropped her book bag down to the floor and pulled out her phone to call Zach. She really needed to talk to him and know what the fuck is going on. When Y/N put her phone to her ear the call went straight to his voicemail. “No, no, no.” Y/N said in complete panic taking her phone away from her ear. Before she could redial someone called her. It was Zach’s mom, so she quickly answered the call.
“Hello?” Y/N said after putting the phone up against her ear. “Y/N.” She heard Zach’s voice on the other line which made her heart rate skip a beat. “Zach! I’m so relieved to hear your voice.” Y/N said into the phone. “Come to the hospital.” She heard him say in a serious tone. “Zach, what’s going on?” Y/N said as her relief quickly melted away. “I’ll tell you when you get here.” She heard him tell her. Before she could say anything else he hung up. Y/N let out a heavy sigh as she called for a cab to take her to the hospital since her mom wasn’t going to be home from work till after five.
As Y/N waited for the cab outside her house she sent a text to her mom letting her know what’s going on. After she hit the send button the cab showed up. When she got into the back of the cab, she told the driver where to take her. During the car ride Y/N did all she could do to keep her nerves down, but she couldn’t. As she stared out the window all she kept thinking about was her phone call with Zach. She was finally so relieved to hear from him, but the way he was talking quickly drained that feeling out of her.
Y/N was so deep in her thoughts that she didn’t realize that the cab has arrived at the hospital. After she thanked and paid the driver she got out of the cab.
She took a deep breath and walked into the front doors of the emergency room of the hospital. Her eyes scanned the room till they finally landed on Zach who was sitting in the corner of the room by himself. “Zach!” Y/N called out to him as she quickly walked over to him. When he looked up, she noticed scratches on his face which made her heart ache. Zach stood up and gave her a big hug which she returned right away. “I’m so happy to see you.” Zach told her as he held her as close to him as he could. “Same here.” Y/N told him.
“Before I catch you up on what happened I need to tell you something really important.” Zach said pulling away, so he was looking at her, but he still had his arms around her. “What is it?” Y/N asked him as she stared into his brown eyes. Zach didn’t say anything. Instead, he connected his lips with hers which took her by surprise. She still returned the kiss, but she was still in shock that she was kissing her best friend. When they pulled away from each other’s lips they rested their foreheads against one another’s.
“After the scary and fucked up day I just had, I knew the first thing I had to do was tell you that I have feelings for you.” Zach told her taking both of her hands in his’s. “Well, I’m happy I get to tell you that I have feelings for you, too.” Y/N told him smiling for the first time today.
Zach smiled as again he leaned in and connected his lips with Y/N’s again both so happy to finally be with each other after a day that was filled with nothing but anxiety.

Chasing ghosts. Chapter 1
I’m finally posting the first chapter.
Forgive me for my grammar, like I said I'm not a native speaker, but I hope you'll find it at least readable.
As always big thanks to @edward-or-ford for all his help and guidance
I’ll soon figure out how to create a master post, but just for now I’ll leave a link to a prologue (if you haven’t read it) here
Hope you guys enjoy this chapter
New City, NY, August 31st 2024
Dipper set aside the empty glass and glanced around at the merry people gathered to celebrate the Pines twins’ birthday. There were friends, a couple of relatives, colleagues. Mostly the Zach Turner’s colleagues: Dipper himself did not have personal contact with many people every day. A freelance journalist is called freelance for a reason. But if you are a stockbroker, even a beginner, then you might be in this kind of crowd. All of them fit, most of them tanned (probably from a solarium), wearing fancy Trussardi polos, a full set in order to impress you. To make you believe that you are looking at a wealthy confident man who knows no worries and ready tackle any money issues.
No, It’s not that Dipper could blame them, it's just their job to look successful and reliable. But from all this dazzling crowd hanging out in the backyard of the house he began to feel a ruffling sensation in his eyes. As if somebody poured a bucket of transparent glue on each of them and after they were shot with a sequins canon or whatever. It’s just seemed that each movement of these people somehow refracted the rays of sunlight at such an angle to hit Dipper directly in the eyes with a piercing beam. But anyway, Mabel was probably over-delighted with this kind display. Somehow it became a sort of tradition for the past ten years: what was painful for Dipper was pretty joyfull for Mabel.
Pines mentally kicked himself for that last thought. It sounded terrible, even if he didn’t say it out loud. And it sounded even worse coming from the thoughts of a loving brother.
Hah, a loving ... brother. It's odd even to put these two words in one sentence…
Another mental kick. Don’t you even dare to think about your feelings for your own sister, not now. Better to not ever.
Disgusting thoughts.
Wrong feelings.
Bad brain. Very bad and being an ass right now. We need to focus on what is important: today's birthday. Stan could get to us from his backwoods. Dad and Mom are also going to visit in a couple of days, when they return from the next trip around the country. They are probably happy with their new life without the constant care of children, busy only with each other and with their dreams.
Everyone was happy. Why couldn’t Dipper at least relax a little and pretend that he enjoyed this noise, instead of constantly thinking about escape paths from this house filled with smiling mannequins and idle talk? From the house where every piece of furniture, every spoon from the gift set and every word uttered by its inhabitants would forever remind Dipper of what he lost, and more than that, what he could never get. It was taken away from him by this slender hard-built bastard with a radiant smile from ear to ear and the sweetest speeches that he poured in huge doses into the ears of everyone around him. All these manners, courtesy. Damn, was it really only Dipper that was sick of this man-made likeness? Did no one else see his essence? Why did no one else see him as the dirty bastard he was? And why was Mabel, sweet smart Mabel, so blinded by all his fake ... this fake ... facade?
Dipper let out a deep sigh and reached for the glass again.
You know what? Forget it. You once again begin to come up with wild ideas and seeing things. Not every man hovers around Mabel actually turns out to be a psychopath, a juvenile maniac or a bunch of wild Fae creatures.
Yes, but I was right then!
Because then you tried to protect your sister, not the girl you are in love with.
As if there is any difference.
Newsflash. Of course there is. Want an example? Okay second year at college, the black guy what’s-his-face? Always found an excuse to hang in your dorm room with Mabel. You do remember him, right? And how long did it take your eye to recover from swelling.
Hey, it's not my fault that he got into a fight.
It happens when you get a lot of suspicious glares.
There weren’t so many of them ...
Dude, he still probably thinks you are a racist or something.
The rumble of a bourbon being filled in a glass was almost a lullaby. Dipper did not even notice how he filled the vessel almost to the brim.
Well, that was great: he was talking to himself now! Not that it was the first time. He often arranged internal disputes on this or that topic, clashing his rational part with itself or with the sensual, but never before his emotional side sounded so offended and pitiful.
Dipper frowned, sipping an amber drink, which burned his tongue and throat, but at the same time it became a little easier to consider everything that was happening and himself in it. With this ease, eyelids grew heavy, thoughts became slower - only the footage of the last six months of his life began to flash before his eyes.
If it could be called that. A life ...
Life is something sensible, controlled in the most of things. With no comprehensible forecast, only with assumptions - and that's enough, believe me.
And this kind of floating in the time-space with rare interactions with random objects floating there as well could hardly be called a life. It's like flying on autopilot without a specific purpose. And even you can not enjoy a journey in spite of what they say. A kind of asteroid in the cold space.
Or more like....
Perhaps it's ... like a satellite? Yes, a satellite that spends its entire life quietly orbiting its planet - a circle after a circle, year after year. It's boring, but you can adapt, especially if you do not think about why you get in this orbit and what happened before. If you do not replay in your mind moments from the past when at the age of fifteen you started to notice things that should not have been noticed, when your sweating hands, weak legs and lack of words turned the simplest conversation into an attraction of strangeness and awkwardness. If you do not replay memories of prom night over and over again in your head, which you found an excuse not to go to having no date to bring along, and your sister spent the whole night accompanied by that tall blond guy from her Spanish class and returned only the morning after. Or how you secretly threw out letters from the MIT that was ready to tear you away from the opportunity to choose a college in the same city as Mabel did.
Collect all these pieces together, and here you are - Dipper Pines - a proud mayor of the city called "What am I doing with my life?". Population: one person.
No, not like that.
And you are ready to go out into the streets and tear leaflets to passers-by with an invitation to the seminar "Are you too happy with your life? I will tell you how to get rid of this feeling. Every Sunday at a local community center. BYOB"
Yes, that's better. I can at least raise a little money.
Wait, what am I talking about? I need to open my eyes ...
A little more ... a little more ...
Oh, No! Bad idea!
Too light! Too light and too many people!
Oh... damn it …
Hmm ... although what am I? This was like it before I fell into my thoughts.
And yes - I'm still here. In the backyard of this hellhole, where Turner dragged my May ... um ... my ... my sister in his clawed paws. And from this hell I will never get her out of.
Dipper opened his eyes a little wider and looked at Zach's two-story house with complete disdain. Painted in a sky blue color, with windows washed up to the illusion of their absence and a neat backyard with garden gnomes, miniature paths lined with wooden footbridges, solar-powered lanterns and a low fence separating this site from the neighboring ones, it fit perfectly into a quiet family scenery, which New City of himself represented. This house came in no comparison with a small apartment in Brooklyn, where the twins has lived for almost a year after moving to New York. The apartment, which was a witness of moments of happiness and sadness, where the TV sometimes wasn’t turn off til morning because of the another marathon of cheesy horror movies, which housed the whole world of two closest friends, who loved each other sincerely and unselfishly. And which kept the secrets of one of them about where in its sincerity and disinterestedness there were footnotes in small print.
At the age of sixteen, Dipper told himself that only time was needed and that everything would end, everything would pass.
Now that’s a funny statement. Like a film or a book with an open ending, it gives a choice. For example, how long will it take or what will end? How many more will a small gray spinning top spin before shaking and gradually slowing its course until it stops? And will it stop at all?
Well, anyway, Dipper learned one thing - nothing can depend only on his will and obey the dry logic and, therefore, control. At the age of eighteen, he began to feel how gradually the situation began to develop according to his own scenario, regardless of his efforts to manage it. At twenty-two he could hardly find an explanation for his actions and decisions, and six months ago …
Six months ago, the satellite nevertheless descended from orbit and began its journey through the cold dark and empty nothingness. Six months ago, time had finally passed and everything was over.
On that day he walked from the editorial office with a new assignment. It was Friday, there was nowhere to hurry, although on the streets of New York even if you do not want to you have to merge with the eternally rushing crowd. There was a smell of spring in the air, and no matter how cliched this phrase was, damn it, it was true. Even Dipper felt something like that. Light and warm whiff. For the short time that he walked from the editorial office, the world around acquired more color, more smells - not literally, New York, with its busy streets, always supplied smells even above normal. Everything around seemed to come to life, blossoming in all its glory.
Not surprisingly, Mabel was always so happy about the arrival of spring, wherever we were. Maybe I should learn from her? Observe her today while taking a walk in Central Park - why the guy can’t invite his sister to take a walk in Central Park? Also, it’s now so beautiful there - bare trees are just beginning to be covered with the first signs of foliage, old men and women and young lovers are walking slowly along the paths of the park, contemplating what’s happening around them ...
It is possible to pretend that there is no hidden sadness that there is no emptiness inside. You can just move your legs, do not think about anything and absorb the sensations. And all this next to the most beloved person in the whole world …
Immersed in these thoughts and not particularly paying attention to scurrying hurried to and fro people around him, Dipper did not notice how a lazy and pacified smile began to creep across his face.
At least today life is good!
Mabel was waiting for him in the Ferrara bakery on Grand Street, where she was heading after another interview. It turns out that it's not so easy to find a job in New York for a mobile designer, but Mabel was not one of those people who despairs even after four months of searching. Although it seemed to Dipper that her enthusiasm was already at an end, and only by some miracle she still finds the strength to get up in the morning. He wanted to cheer her up, somehow raise her spirits, even if she does not admit that she is sad. Show that he is near, that he was always and will be there.
He planned everything: meet Mabel after work, a walk in Central Park, pizza for dinner and several pre-prepared playlists to choose from - romantic comedies, musicals, horror films and detectives. When they were sixteen, they could spend the whole night before the TV screen watching this kind of marathon of films. It's clear, they are older now and they have work and responsibilities, but, hey - today is Friday.
Simple and sincere. Only two of them, together.
It sounds like a date. Something like that…
From Worcester Street, on which stood the editorial building, it was ten minutes to go to the venue. Turn to Grand Street and go east, bypassing Green, Mercer, Broadway, Crosby, Lafayette, Center, Baxter and Mulberry Street. Piece of cake.
Despite the fact that after the turn the only thing that he had to do was to be on the straight line all the time, Dipper repeatedly checked the route in Google maps to make sure that he does not get lost and will be in place on time. Yes, it sounds odd, but New York is a big city, and it needs to be able to navigate. He didn’t want to repeat the story when Mabel mistakenly left for Jersey City and Dipper had to explain to her how to send her geolocation message to find it and pick her up.
Although now, probably, Dipper with all the desire could not not find the place where his sister was waiting. Huge signboards to the owners of the establishment seemed to be not enough, so they hoisted a giant plastic cones with a multicolored ice cream on both sides of the entrance, put a showcase with sweets on the street, and on the visor above the entrance for some reason they’ve put an old red baker's truck or something like that. Only the red carpet leading inside was missing. Oh, no, here it is …
Mabel sat in the far corner at a table for two. Before her stood a half empty mug of latte (obviously with a syrup of bubble gum, how can one drink it at all?) And a barely touched strawberry cheesecake. A slight dreamy smile played on her lips, a look through half-open eyelids was directed against the wall opposite her, the cheek is propped up by the palm, and the head is slightly tilted. Oh, so might it be that today she was at luck?
And how did it always happen that in any situation, in any position and with any expression of her face, Mabel was more beautiful than all the girls, that he’s ever seen in his life?..
"Hi, sis," Dipper said with a smile. "How was today?"
Whatever Mabel dreamed of, she was deep in her thoughts, because only the creak of the chair being moved in front of her and the appearance of her brother in her field of vision could bring her back to reality.
"Oh, hello, Dip," she chirped smiling wider. "I didn’t expect you so early."
“What?” Dipper was slightly taken aback. “I thought that I was even five minutes late ... wait, is this sarcasm? ...”
"No, no," Mabel said, quickly removing her elbow from the table and tucking the hair into her ear. She scanned the bakery, as if not quite understanding where she was.
“What time is it now?”
"Um, seven o'clock, just the time we agreed to meet”
"Oh, already?" Mabel lowered her eyes slightly and began fiddling with the tips of her hair.
"The time flew by so quickly," she added in a half whisper. Her cheeks glowed softly.
“Yes, already”  something suspicious was in the behavior of the sister. But put it off, Pines. You were going to offer something.
"Well, how did it go this time? Everything’s worked out? Looking forward to the call?”
"Or I can call first," Mabel playfully giggled.
“Mmm? Can you call them first for what?”
Mabel raised her eyes to her brother, in which a certain perplexity was read. For another couple of seconds, the sweet mist of dreams in her gaze dissipated until something clicked in her head, and she finally realized what Dipper was talking about.
"Ah, yes," she did her jazz hands "an interview. Well, it seems that next month you’ll still have to pay for the apartment. "She sighed and took a mug of coffee with both hands, lowering her head," again ... "
"Hey, hey," Dipper reached out and covered Mabel's arm, "it's all right. It's not important, the main thing is that you find a place where you’ll be appreciated and where it’ll be interesting for you to work and manifest yourself. You're the most creative person in this world. Heck, they're just idiots, if they didn’t take you right away!”
Mabel looked into Dipper's eyes and sadly, but sincerely smiled.
"I'll help you with what I can and will be around," Dipper smiled back.
God, how beautiful she is. There were so many guys in high school who liked her that the fingers of Ford's hands would not be enough to count them. True, none of those who had the luck to be with her, did not last more than two or three weeks, because none of them saw that behind the beauty of her there is also a very sharp mind. The whole universe with its rules and colors was stored in this charming fair-haired head. But none of them seemed to notice this.
Unlike Dipper.
Mabel embodied all the things that he lacked so much: freedom, creativity, infinite energy. Without it, he would not be a whole person. No one would have him learn to enjoy life and look at the world from a different angle, different from the position of dry logic.
"Thank you, bro bro," Mabel said quietly. "It means a lot to me, really”
"Any time, May," Dipper snapped his hand away and looked at his watch. "We still have plenty of time until the sun sets. It's about 20 minutes by metro to the Central Park, so I thought that we could wind up our heads a little. What do you say? You didn’t have any plans for tonight, did you?”
Mabel looked away and blushed profusely, covering her mouth with her palm and softly giggling.
Oh no. No no no! He screwed up, did he? He said it as if he was inviting her on a date. Oh, damn, oh, damn it! He rehearsed this phrase so much that it sounded like a simple friendly proposal in order to funk up anyway ?! She knows, she knows for sure, and now this situation will become even more awkward.
Set the panic aside! I need to figure out how to get out of this. Just laugh it off or try to explain what he meant.
Shit, why his palms are so sweaty? Is he in the eighth grade again?
“It sounds tempting, Dip. I’d really like to take a walk now …”
Oh, my God, phew. Everything is fine.
"... but, you see ..."
But? What’s for but? But what?
"... I really don’t know how it happened ... it seems that I have a date tonight!" Mabel finished her phrase. Her eyes were just glowing with happiness. The smile was broader and more dreamy than before, which made Dipper feel cold in the lower abdomen.
“I really didn’t know that this is the case in real life, but when I was walking from Five Points here ... i mean, our eyes just met, and I realized that he’d come up to me and ask me some question or say something... I just don’t understand how you constantly experience such stress every time you try to talk to a girl, this has never happened to me ...”
But Dipper wasn’t listening anymore. Only now he finally noticed all the details surrounding them. Strawberry cheesecake - when was the last time Mabel allowed herself something sweet in the city? Of course, they were not so poor, but given the fact that Mabel still did not have a permanent job, she tried to save money and not squander the money of her brother over trifles. So it was a treat. Then, how did Dipper not notice the empty espresso cup standing on his side of the table? He was too busy contemplating his sister to draw attention to this and to the fact that Mabel was constantly fiddling a napkin in her hand, on which was visible the pen-written sequence of numbers and one word.
Zach.
He left her his phone number. Who does this now? What kind of moron should one be to do this, instead of just dictating a number to be recorded in the phone?
That invisible, light breath that warmed Dipper so far from the moment he left the editorial office was instantly replaced by an importunate cold draft, from which all the muscles of his face grew cold and numb, turning nis face into a fixed mask that did not express any emotion. The bright March evening began to be replaced by a dark emptiness.
And Mabel kept talking and talking. She was extremely excited by what was happening: so many emotions, so many assumptions and hopes. As many as many times the only one phrase sounded in Dipper's head:
It happened again …
Sooner or later, it should have happened, but why today? On the day when he finally felt a barely perceptible wave of happiness?
Sometimes it seems that the universe itself is against you. Whether you achieve something desirable say some fun and joy come to life - bam! Sign here, please.
On the one hand, you can, of course, decide that this is "designed" so, that it’s fate and junk, that everything is natural and the time has come. The time for whatever - for example, the time to give up.
On the other hand, one can regard this same "bam" from the Universe as an appeal not to relax and to act further, to become better, to grow and all that.
You can, of course, just not react at all.
It depends.
A lot of dependencies happens to be all around us. Someone sits for hours with a guitar, learns to play the way his or hers favorite performers do, someone shoves career needle into his or hers veins, someone’s obsessed with science - yes, there are plenty of examples.
And love is something you can depend on too.
It’s even addictive.
And for someone who already has a strong addiction, something smoother will ... be like ...
Damn ... words ... how to make them into sentences? ..
So, enough for today's memories.
And speaking about strong and smooth ... I need another drink.
The glass stood on the table right here. Where is it ... hey?
Hey!
What the...?
"You tell me. That's enough for you, kid."
Kid? Oh he didn’t...
Dipper opened his eyes, trying to make out the speaker with him. It would have been better if it was anyone, but Zach.
"I think you might have the wrong glass, buddy," he croaked, trying to focus on the figure of the man next to him holding a vessel with amber corn liquid.
“Oh yeah? And didn’t you have the wrong party, knucklehead? The last thing I want to see right now is how my nephew gets drunk as hell at his birthday party”
Wait…
Stan? ..
“No, Pope John Paul II. Who do you think?”
In a second, Dipper's eyes flew open, and consciousness returned to online mode. Was he talking all this time out loud?
“I ... um” Dipper uncomfortably fidgeting on the chair, adjusting the edges of the shirt that was pulled up and briskly brushing his hair with fingers.
"Stan ... how long ... are you sitting here?"
"What? You wanna know how much of that nonsense that you muttered I heard? Don’t worry, your secrets will die with me.”
Oh no…
Dipper swallowed nervously and nodded uncertainly, looking before him. Stan responded with a laugh and added, changing his tone from more strict to good-natured:
"It's a joke, kid," he lifted his massive hand onto his nephew's shoulder, "there's nothing for me to blackmail you. This time.”
If they were in another place and under different circumstances, Dipper would have laughed along with his Gruncle. Now he did not even try, because together with laughter it would have turned out to be some silly awkward likeness.
"And yet, what made you to portray that guy ... Kain Rivers? Give you a piece of cake in the hand, and there’ll be complete similarity.”
"You mean Keanu Reeves?"
“Him, too.”
Dipper sighed and lowered his head, covered his face with his hands. Stan, having sipped a little bourbon from the glass, put his hand on his shoulder again.
“Seriously, Dip, what's wrong?” he added worried.
“Nothing, I'm fine” telling lies to a man who has proved over many years that he is the most understanding and caring member of the family left a disgusting taste on the tip of his tongue. If someone than it would be Stan to always be able to hear out and help. He would lay down his bones for the well-being of his family. Maybe he can at least somehow pour out his soul? ..
“What did you feel when Gruncle Ford disappeared in the portal? What’s it like to understand that your closest friend’s gone forever?”
Stan also sighed, setting aside his glass, and turned to face Dipper.
“Listen. You and Mabel, as long as I can remember, have always been together. You grew up, studied, moved to another cities. As I said, you rarely see such a relationship between a brother and a sister. But sooner or later, both of you should have had other companions of life. This is normal - it’s so arranged in the world. People get married, have families, children, invite each other to their dinners, go to work, dig in the garden in the backyard. It’s not the same as getting lost in another dimension for thirty years. Mabel just got married, she didn’t disappear from your life. Yes, now you’ll be separated not by the walls of the rooms, but by a good one and a half hour drive, but ... I’m not a good speaker... anyway,” - he drank some more whiskey.
"You two are better than we were with my brother. I'm telling you this, Ford claimed it until his last breath - believe me. Even if you were separated by space and time, you’d find a way to find yourselves... I mean to find each other. Do you understand what I mean?”
Dipper looked at the old man. In Stan's glance, God bless his heart, confidence and love were read. As always. And although he did not come even a bit close to understanding what was going on in Dipper's heart, his words still warmed.
"Yes, I do, Gruncle," Dipper smiled slightly. "Thank you."
"Well, it takes more than a simple thanks to be stuffed" Stan laughed and rose from his seat, leaning on the cane, "if you knew what they feed you on the plane, you’d understand what I mean. Next time I fly business class, and you pay. I spotted like a table with snacks inside, it's time to visit it.”
With these words he headed toward the house, stepping unsteadily and constantly leaning on his cane. Dipper saluted him in the style of Lando Calrissian and frowned. It was not fair  to upset Stan today with talk like that. So much of a burden was falling on his shoulders lately, and then there's just a glimpse of joy. Still, not every day his grand-niece marries.
It's a pity that Ford did not live to see this day. I definitely need to take a couple of  days off and go to Oregon. Stan becomes too weak to regularly care for the grave.
“Dipper! Bro-bro!”
Oh no.
Dipper pulled a smile on his face and turned to the source of the sound. There she was, flying to him in a light purple summer dress with a white collar.
"Silly drunken little brother. Where did you disappear?“ Mabel laughed, catching him with an empty glass and a half-empty bottle.
Dipper rolled his eyes and smiled wider.
"Mabel, we're the same age. Also I noticed that one bottle of champagne was open before the guests arrived”
He frowned in a mocking way and rubbed his chin,
“Hmm ... But who drank the champagne?..”
He pretended to be chewing a pen, thinking hard.
Mabel stuck out her tongue at her brother and laughed loudly.
"You’re such a nerd!"
She plopped down next to him and laid her head on his shoulder.
“Just think of it, we’re twenty-five now. Do people even have to live so long?”
"I'm still surprised that you even lived to be of age, considering the amount of sugar you absorb daily ... Ow!"  light elbow pokes from her still caught him off guard.
“You deserved that. Be grateful that Mister Tickles didn’t show up for such conversations with your sister.”
“Okaaaay. Mabel, are you sure you’re twenty-five?”  Dipper quickly moved away from Mabel, who was ready to attack on his brother's ribs with his fingers spread out, and raised both hands, "Okay, okay! No more of that!”
"Good brother." Mabel nodded with a satisfied look. "And now, if you'll allow me, jokes aside."
She took a small rectangular bundle from her handbag hanging from her shoulder on a thin chain and solemnly handed it to Dipper.
“Here!”
Dipper took the package from his sister's hands and for a few seconds admired this neatly wrapped in a nice-to-feel gift paper object. It was a pity to spoil such beauty.
“Come on, open it!”
In one motion Dipper opened the package, and in his hands was a large, thick notebook of dark blue. On his soft leather cover was woven golden threads of a small pine tree. Dipper carefully opened the title page, which was encoded with a neat letter. This time Dipper's face was lit up with a sincere smile - they invented the cipher together, many years ago, when in the classroom they passed notes to each other or left them in lockers.
"Wow ..." Dipper sighed. "I ... um ... thanks, Mabel."
"You're welcome, Dip," his sister shone, "I just wondered where it's seen that Dipper wouldn’t have a journal, would he?"  she again laughed and wrapped her arms around him, pulling her brother in a bear hug.
“Happy birthday, Dipper.”
"Happy birthday, Mabel," he replied, breathing in the fragrance of her floral perfume. "I ... um-uh ..." he cleared his throat and pulled away. "My present ... it... I decided not to carry it with me, so it's in the house, but ... I'm sure you'll like it too.
“It would be better if it was so.” Mabel said haughtily. With these words she jumped up, grabbing Dipper by the sleeve of his shirt and dragging him toward the house.
"There's a whole bunch of them there! Gifts!” she skipped off to the house, taking her stumbling brother along with her. "Let's go! I can’t wait to open each one right now!”
* * *
“Son of a…”  the lighter was still sent to the garbage because of malfunctioning, and now all the hope remained that the houses still had matches. Dipper had already rummaged through all the drawers in the kitchen, but not even one sucker was found in this abundance of kitchen utensils and cutlery, such an absurd abundance for the apartment, now serving as a lonely young man's refuge.
Dipper's gaze wandered around the kitchen, the space in his eyes doubled, quadrified - in general it was multiplying in every possible way, and it was extremely difficult to focus on something definite.
Was it really necessary to get so drunk? He did not have a car in New York for the time being, he used to travel by public transport and a taxi, but this is not an excuse for finding a pub on his way home to Brooklyn and staying there until midnight. The morning will be very bad. Very painful and bad.
But, it looks like this is the problem of tomorrow's Dipper, not today's, who has a real business to do now.
He held his hand to the countertop, and staggered to the gas stove, which looked like the last chance to light a damned cigarette, clamped in his teeth. Unsafe last chance. After meditating for couple of seconds, Dipper shook his head, muttering "No, sir," and went to investigate further. Still an eternity, according to the present chronology of Dipper, was wasted - there were no lighters or matches in the house, so that the stove was again in his field of vision.
Still adhering to the nearby interior for a safety net, Dipper drove to the suspicious fire-breathing inhabitant of his house. The fire was only lit from the fifth attempt, and, bending over to the hotplate itself and almost putting his shirt collar on fire, Dipper finally sucked in the pungent tobacco smoke.
And, it turned out that trying to smoke his first cigarette in life right now was a bad idea. Even disgusting. Not only that, he immediately became overwhelmed with a heavy cough and the shaking of his diaphragm awakened something dark in the stomach, consisting of half of bourbon, and half of the birthday cake.
Oh, shit, shit, SHIT!
To the left from the kitchen into the corridor, to the end ... lights on...
Where’s this switch ?!
Oh no! ..
FUCK!!!
At the last second Dipper managed to touch the toilet before he utterly unpleasantly vomited. All thoughts and emotions were compressed into a dot, leaving the consciousness with a devastatingly pure emptiness.
At some point, it might even have seemed that Dipper had blacked out, but as soon as the last urge receded, he straightened leaning with his hands on the rim of the toilet bowl and stood on his unsteady legs and went to the sink, much more tired and much less drunk.
At least giving the face a splash and rinsing the mouth with a freshener will not hurt.
And what do we have here? Oh, nothing, just your dirty still green face with a week stubble and some substance smeared around your mouth.
Oh, gross, ew!
He pulled off his shirt right over his head, doused his face with cold water, rinsed his mouth and staggered into his room.
Well, that's my life now. Drinking, no permanent job, a broken heart ... what could be better?
Dipper hobbled to the bed and plumped on it, without even bothering to remove the veil and pull off his trousers.
At least here I can quit pretending, he thought, as the tears came down bombarding his pillow.

#1 – Jeana Turner
Normally the villain is in a way assisted by their edit: a lot of the times they get carried further to cause drama, or are still praised for modelling regardless of their personality. Jeana somehow came out with none of these positives. She really should have had a real chance of winning, got numerous first call-outs, and survived to the end without an elimination, but all these were taken away. Instead she was left with a negative tone, and honestly I feel it might have been better for her had she never come on the show. Jeana performed incredibly well throughout the entire show. Her portfolio was one of the strongest, maybe not as consistent as Khrys’, but it certainly had more peaks: she got 5 first call-outs from me, the most of any girl. Her runway walk was without a doubt the best of the cycle, even with her shorter height, which is expendable given how unique she is. The judges seemed to have a personal vendetta against her, which again seems unexplained. They gave her no first call-outs, despite deserving some, and never gave her wins for her runway walk, and when she did do best in the finale, ignored that by fixating on a detail that shouldn’t have mattered that much. During the makeovers she was made to be the hero, but then suddenly we are supposed to believe she is awful. In reality she is maybe a bit self-centred and cutthroat: both traits which are completely normal, but were hyper-intensified on the show. If we were being fair, in the modelling industry those are actually most likely positives, and would help Jeana succeed. All in all it is just clear Jeana was done incredible wrong by the show.
As I said, on a whole Khrys still probably had the one-up on portfolio, purely due to consistency and versatility. Jeana actually had more peaks than Khrys, but also actually had some bad photos. While Khrys seemed to be able to mesh her skills to any brief, Jeana fell down in the stripped back photoshoots. Even then, it is purely in photoshoots with no make-up she failed. Her vulnerable shot was one of my least favourites, and looks incredibly awkward: it is probably the one time her bald head didn’t work. But compare this to shoots with more natural and minimal make-up, like her trio shot, and we can see she does fine there. Jeana however always performed in conceptual photoshoots: her gold shot is still one of my favourite of the cycle. She killed it, and created a piece of art: had Zach Miko been on her level, then this shot would have been a real contender for the top spot.
At the end of the day, what put Jeana top of this list is that she had real potential to become a top model. While girls like Khrys and Kyla have potential to become successful models, they are still exchangeable. They may be somewhat unique, but not completely. Jeana on the other hand has virtually no competition. She has everything she needs to succeed: versatility in her looks due to her wigs, one of the strongest walks in ANTM history, dedication and drive to succeed, and an editorial and photogenic look. All the boxes are ticked, so I really could see Jeana continuing to grow, and I just hope the negativity from her time on the show doesn’t affect that.

What’s at stake for every NBA team the rest of the season
Tumblr media
This is what every NBA team is playing for at the end of the regular season.
The end of the NBA’s regular season is typically a time for teams to rest their starters and gear up for either the playoffs or draft lottery. The introduction of the play-in tournament this year has changed that a bit, adding more urgency to the closing stretch of the season as most teams still have something to play for.
The teams that place No. 7 and No. 8 in each conference will still have to earn their way into the playoffs for the first time via the play-in tournament against the No. 9 and No. 10 seeds. There’s also increased competition for the No. 6 seed in each conference, which would mean avoiding the play-in tournament. It’s created a scenario where most games still have meaning in the final stretch of the regular season.
With the season coming to a close and the play-in tournament beginning on May 18, we broke the league into six different tiers. Here’s what every team has to play for before the start of the playoffs.
The tankers
We’re defining teams in this section as anyone currently at least four games out of the play-in tournament. These squads have nothing to play for but ping pong balls, but the lottery will be more meaningful for some of these teams than others. Check out the odds for every lottery slot at Tankathon:
Houston Rockets: This has been a nightmare season for the Rockets in every way, and the team will have enormous stakes attached to its lottery chances at the end of the season. Houston’s 2021 first round pick was sent to Oklahoma City as part of the Russell Westbrook trade, but it’s protected 1-4. The Rockets currently have a two-game cushion for the worst record in the league, and if they end the season that way their pick can’t fall any further than No. 5. Unfortunately for the Rockets, there’s still a 47.9 percent chance the pick lands at No. 5 and therefore coveys to OKC. In that scenario, Houston would Miami’s first round pick.
Minnesota Timberwolves: The Wolves are in a similar situation to the Rockets as one of the league’s worst teams with a chance to losing their pick. The Wolves traded their 2021 first rounder to the Warriors as part of the D’Angelo Russell trade, but it’s protected 1-3. If the Wolves finish the season with the league’s second worst record, they will have a 39.7 percent chance of keeping the pick in the protected range, and a 60.3 percent chance of conveying the pick to Golden State.
Detroit Pistons: The Pistons would love a top pick to pair with their promising three-man rookie class this season. They own their pick.
Orlando Magic: The Magic own their pick, and should finish in the bottom four. Orlando is also rooting against the Bulls: Chicago sent its first round pick in 2021 (and 2023) to the Magic in the Nikola Vucevic trade, but it’s protected 1-4.
Oklahoma City Thunder: The Thunder are tanking as transparently as any team in the league right now by shutting down Al Horford, letting Shai Gilgeous-Alexander slowly recover from plantar fasciitis, and resting Lu Dort regularly. The dream scenario for the Thunder is landing at No. 1 in the lottery with their own pick and the Rockets falling to No. 5, which would then be sent to OKC.
Cleveland Cavaliers: The Cavs own their own pick. If they finish where they’re at now with the league’s sixth worst record, they will have a 37.2 percent chance of jumping into the top-four.
Sacramento Kings: The Kings are set to miss the playoffs for the 15th straight season. If they finish with the league’s seventh worst record, they will have 32 percent chance at a top-four pick. Give De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton some help!
Fighting for the play-in tournament

These teams just a want a chance to prove they deserve to make the playoffs. Each of these teams is fighting for the final spot in the play-in tournament. Remember: the No. 9 and No. 10 seeds will play each other in the play-in tournament, and the winner of that game will face of the winner of the No. 7 seed vs. No. 8 seed game. You can check out the up-to-date standings at NBA.com.
New Orleans Pelicans: The Pelicans chances at the play-in are teetering on the edge: they’re currently 3.5 games behind the Warriors for the No. 10 seed and final spot in the play-in. For as incredible as Zion Williamson has been this season, the Pelicans are likely looking at ending the season hoping for some lottery luck.
Toronto Raptors: This has been a disappointing season for the Raptors, but the play-in tournament is still within reach. Toronto is 1.5 games out of the No. 10 seed in the East with 10 games to play. The Raptors have made the playoffs seven straight years and would certainly be a team no one wants to see in the play-in tournament or the playoffs, should they make it.
Chicago Bulls: Chicago obviously wants to make the play-in tournament after trading its top-four protected first round pick for Vucevic. The worst case scenario for the Bulls — missing the play-in tournament and losing their first round pick to Orlando — is possible, but the team should be getting Zach LaVine back soon from a Covid-related absence (hopefully he’s feeling healthy). The Bulls want to make themselves an appealing destination to future free agents, and making the play-in tournament would be a decent start. How to build the rest of the team around Vooch and LaVine will be the biggest plot of the offseason.
Washington Wizards: The Wizards have been the hottest team in the NBA in April outside of the Knicks. Yes, everything about that last sentence is completely wild. Washington snapped its eight game winning streak against the Spurs earlier this week, but they have a one-game lead for the No. 10 seed with 11 games to play. Wizards fans might have preferred better odds in the lottery than a doomed play-in run, but any team with Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook is going to be hellbent on trying to win.

Just making the play-in tournament isn’t good enough for everyone: there’s also value to grabbing the No. 7 or No. 8 seed. While the teams that finish No. 8 and No. 9 will immediately play an elimination game to start the tournament, the loser of the No. 7 vs. No. 8 seed game will still a shot to qualify for the playoffs in a game against the 9-10 winner. You can check out the up-to-date standings at NBA.com.
Indiana Pacers: The Pacers just can’t catch a break this season with year-ending injuries to Myles Turner and T.J. Warren, and a nagging back injury for Domantas Sabonis in the second half. Indiana is currently the No. 9 seed and have a two-game lead over Washington and a three-game lead over Chicago for the No. 10 and No. 11 seeds. This Pacers team looked impressive to start the season, but it’s becoming fair to wonder where this core is headed long-term.
Charlotte Hornets: The Hornets’ season can already be called a success for finding a future star in LaMelo Ball and blowing past their preseason expectations. Charlotte has been hanging tough as injuries have piled up over the last month, but Ball, Gordon Hayward, and Malik Monk could all healthy and ready to play in the play-in tournament.
Golden State Warriors: The good news: the Warriors have been on-fire, winning eight of their last 12 games as Stephen Curry has forged his way into the MVP race. The bad news: it’s mostly happened after No. 2 overall draft pick James Wiseman went down with a season-ending torn meniscus. The Warriors have a comfortable 3.5-game lead for the No. 10 spot, and Curry alone makes them a team no opponent will want to face.
Memphis Grizzlies: The Grizzlies have new life with the recent debut of Jaren Jackson Jr, who is playing his first games all season after recovering from a torn meniscus. Ja Morant and Jonas Valanciunas have kept the Griz afloat, while De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Grayson Allen have taken their play to career-best levels. After losing to the Blazers in the play-in game last year, Memphis would like nothing more than to get some real playoff experience for their young players this season.
San Antonio Spurs: After 22 straight playoff appearances under Gregg Popovich, the Spurs have missed the postseason each of the last two years. They are playing to get back to where they belong while Pop, now 72 years old, is still leading the way. Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Jakob Poeltl, and Keldon Johnson have developed into a solid young core but the Spurs still need a star. San Antonio and Memphis will be jostling for the pivotal No. 8 seed in the West.
Fighting to stay out of the play-in tournament

The teams in this group have the same list of goals: stay at or above the No. 6 seed to avoid the play-in, get home court advantage, and get a first round matchup they feel confident in. You can check out the up-to-date standings at NBA.com.
Miami Heat: The Heat haven’t felt fully right this year yet coming off a short offseason following last year’s run to the Finals in the bubble. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo remain an elite 1-2 punch, but it’s the rest of the Heat who have slipped, specifically the shooters. The Heat and Celtics are tied for the last spot out of the play-in tournament right now and still have two games left against each other this year.
Boston Celtics: Boston is another team that hasn’t looked as good as they did last season throughout this year. While Jaylen Brown has leveled up again, Kemba Walker has been slowed down by injuries and Jayson Tatum has had to battle unfortunate side effects of Covid. The Celtics will think they can make a run if they have their full team healthy for the postseason, but they’ll want to avoid the play-in tournament to get there.
Portland Trail Blazers: Portland lost five straight before Tuesday to fall to out of the protected playoff seeds, but they’re only a half-game out of the coveted No. 6 spot. The Blazers’ next five games are on the road in a that will likely determine if they’re safe from the play-in or not. On the plus side, Portland won the first ever play-in game in last year’s bubble, and might have a better chance as the No. 7 seed vs. the Suns than as the No. 6 seed vs. the Clippers.
Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks want to continue to show they’re a franchise on the rise after their torrid second half led by interim coach Nate McMillan. New additions Bogdan Bogdanović and Clint Capela have given Trae Young the veteran help he needs to create a top-10 offense. Atlanta would love to get De’Andre Hunter — who was on the verge of a breakout season before suffering a knee injury — healthy and back in the lineup before the playoffs. Either way, it’s already been a successful season.
New York Knicks: The Knicks are the NBA’s most pleasant surprise, and would be in line to host a first round playoff series if the postseason started today. New York’s nine-game winning streak is over, but the way this team is playing lately feels real. Tom Thibodeau has pushed the defense to elite levels, while Julius Randle’s breakout season has given the Knicks enough to work with offensively even with such poor team-wide shooting. For such a feel-good year, the Knicks would love nothing more than to win a playoff series for only the second time since 2001.
Dallas Mavericks: Luka Doncic didn’t quite live up to his preseason MVP hype, but he’s still been one of the best players in the league and gives Dallas a puncher’s chance in any series. The historically good offense that powered the Mavs last season has been replaced by a unit that barely ranks in the top-10, while the defense has stayed about the same. Doncic will strike fear into the heart of any opponent in the first round, but Dallas still has more work to do before joining the West’s elite tier.
Waiting for the playoffs to show how good they are

These teams all could have been near the top of the conference standings under different circumstances, but they know it’s all about the playoffs anyway. You can check out the up-to-date standings at NBA.com.
Los Angeles Lakers: Anthony Davis is back and LeBron James will be back soon. The Lakers remained elite defensively even without their two superstars, but the offense doesn’t have as much shooting as it did last year. The Lakers have earned the benefit of the doubt to be the favorites to come out of the West, but it feels like they’ll be in for a tougher road this year than what they had to face in the bubble.
Denver Nuggets: Denver was looking significantly better than last year’s team that went to the conference finals before Jamal Murray’s heartbreaking season-ending knee injury. It’s tough to view the Nuggets as a legit title threat without Murray, but they do have a few things going for them: Nikola Jokic is a deserving MVP, Michael Porter Jr. has been incredible as a movement shooter, and Aaron Gordon a big defensive wing who can make an impact on offense with his cutting. This team would be fascinating if only Murray was still around.
Milwaukee Bucks: The Bucks have spent the regular season experimenting with defensive coverages and how to use Giannis Antetokounmpo on offense in ways they didn’t when they blitzed the league the last two regular seasons. The bigger reason for optimism this year is the arrival of Jrue Holiday, who has been excellent in his first season with the team and should be significantly more trustworthy than Milwaukee’s guards in the past. Here’s the scenario to watch for the Bucks: a 3-6 first round matchup with Miami after the Heat stunned them in the bubble last year.

These teams want homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. The top spot in the East is particularly enticing, because it means you avoid the one of the other two elite teams in the field until the conference finals. You can check out the up-to-date standings at NBA.com.
Los Angeles Clippers: The Clippers will hope a new coach in Ty Lue and another year of experience playing together can get them past their playoff troubles last year. Otherwise, they’ll need to rely on the magic of Playoff Rondo. LA is only two games out of the top seed, but the bigger concern is the matchups they’ll face on their run. The Clippers likely aren’t too scared of the Jazz or Suns, but would want to put off a matchup with the Lakers for as long as possible.
Phoenix Suns: The Suns have become one of the great stories of the season with Chris Paul and Monty Williams revitalizing the franchise. After going 8-0 in the bubble last year but still missing the playoffs for the 10th straight season, the Suns are only a game back of the No. 1 seed with 11 to play. While this season has obviously been a huge success for Phoenix, the playoffs will be the ultimate test to see how close to a championship they really are.
Philadelphia 76ers: The Sixers crumbled in the face of expectations last season, but have looked so much better this year with Daryl Morey and Doc Rivers in charge. Joel Embiid’s MVP caliber season and Ben Simmons’ All-Defensive Team-worthy effort have drawn headlines, but the addition of Seth Curry and the quiet improvement of Shake Milton, Matisse Thybulle, and even Tobias Harris have been nearly as important. Hopefully this season has been an end to the yearly referendum on the long-term viability of an Embiid-Simmons led team, but the Sixers need a deep run to end that talking point.
Brooklyn Nets: The Nets haven’t really been trying for the No. 1 seed as Kevin Durant and James Harden have missed long stretches with injuries, but they have it right now anyway. Getting Harden back into the lineup and Durant fully healthy is the biggest key for the Nets. If they all have all three of their stars, Brooklyn’s level of shot-making is so historic that it feels like only they can stop themselves. This is the favorite in the East, but it would be a lot easier if they didn’t have to go through both Miami and Milwaukee to get there.
Utah Jazz: The Jazz have been the best team in the regular season all year, leading the NBA in both net rating and point differential by more than two full points. It should feels like the Jazz should have been bigger lead for the No. 1 seed, but they still have work to do as they close the regular season. The Jazz are top-five both offensively and defensively, and lead the league in three-point rate while being No. 4 in three-point percentage. Utah won’t be scared of anyone come playoff time after such a dominant season, but it’s inevitable that their playoff performance will be seen as a referendum on how good they really are. For Utah to reach its ceiling, Donovan Mitchell is going to have to push his career-best year to even greater heights.
