I think the move by much of social media towards encouraging videos for reach is very tiring but this is the first sort of instagram reel thing I have attempted to post in over a year and I wanted to share it because:
1) I think it’s neat
2) I love to share a little Yasuaki Shimizu noise
and 3) I drew this and recorded it while I was feeling unwell and basically nonverbal in bed and made the decision to do both of these things because it is what pleased me at the time (you will be delighted to know I also drew some things I have not shared or recorded) and it is great, to me, for this to stand as something that I did simply because I deeply desired to. It is wonderful to still find nourishment in creating when creating is also Work
Miles Davis' 70's albums? They put me in a dilemma. Are they really jazz? Of course, they are, I have to be honest that the style continues to be seen through a prism, where one version of the brand seems to be the only one allowed. True, this happens to every musical tone, so no surprise here about jazz being the same. You see, someone like Kazumi Watanabe might not be your regular jazz player, because his musical context – he worked as a session musician in the 70's Japan – gave him a perspective that made his version of the idiom different than the established one. That should be seen as something valuable, we shouldn't let what a certain set of music is stop any sort of the development possible there, because this sort of behaviour sounds stupid.
i put these into 3 unordered, chronological groups. i also cheated a bit because there are like 64 here. this was pretty tough. i’ve listened to a little over 200 albums for the first time this year, and there’s a lot of stuff that i really dug, albums i’d buy in a heartbeat, that aren’t on here (hell, i bought one of the miles davis records i heard for the first time this year & it’s not on here!). a handful that didn’t make it are likely to become all-timers as well (specifically a handful of jazz records i only got to once). hell, a lot of these have quickly become all-time favorites & feel like they’ve been in my life for many years. i already own 20 of these 60, 6 of those 20 are from my 10 favorites, and all 20 get regular rotation at home.
i didn’t count 2022 albums, which in hindsight is silly; i’ve only heard like 15 2022 albums; the smile and angel olsen would’ve been the ones on here.
The Japanese music transforms a variety of genres into something quite distinct. Thus, jazz is different there too. You are correct, I translated the title of an album by a rock band from Germany there, but let us return to Japan. We meet Kazumi Watanabe again in our discussion – how do you do, sir – and I notice how his style of jazz fusion reminds of Casiopea, his fellow countrymen. Of course, both of them take the idiom of jazz to twist the latter in their own shapes. One of the things I admire about the players from Japan might be their willingness to surprise us. Sure, you can't glean this from a cursory listening. Pay close attention to the tune at the link, check with me, when you locate the hidden secrets there.
I had a listen to Bjork's new single and it reminded me of this if it had been remixed by Equiknoxx
The prolific Yasuaki Shimizu is a jazz saxophonist, composer, music producer, and the founder of experimental rock band Mariah
Semi Tori No Hi from his fourth solo studio album Kakashi. Kakashi got a reissue in 2017, it was the first time it had been released outside of Japan but unfortunately the licence didn't extend to digital, so no digital release. You can buy a tote bag with the sleeve artwork on it if you want!
