Gear
Sometimes we get good advice. Sometimes we don't, and we have to learn from our mistakes. Having spent more than 40 years pursuing photography as a hobby, I learned a lot of things the hard way. I'd like to explain one very valuable lesson, and hopefully this will help you avoid the same mistake. I can summarize that lesson in a single sentence:
Use the gear that works well for you.
My first camera was a Polaroid, received as a Christmas present in the late 1970s. It was fun, and it gave me an appreciation of photography as a creative pursuit. However, I quickly realized that photos taken with the Polaroid were vastly inferior to those shot on 35mm film.
I began borrowing my father's camera, a Yashica Electro 35, and started learning the basics of photography. The Yashica was a wonderful camera, but it didn't have interchangeable lenses. When I had saved enough money, I decided to buy an SLR. I spent a great deal of time researching different cameras. I eventually settled on a Ricoh XR-7. In a way it was an odd choice; it was much less popular than the entry-level SLRs from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, and Minolta. However, its controls seemed well-designed and intuitive, and it used the Pentax lens mount, which meant there were many options for different lenses.
It turned out to be a good decision. I loved that Ricoh. Eventually, as I began to shoot more, I purchased another Ricoh. Later I purchased a Pentax as well. Having three bodies which could share lenses was luxurious: I could load each with a different type of film and be well-prepared for any type of shoot.
Somewhere along the way, however, I found myself comparing my gear to the equipment used by professionals. That's when I made a foolish mistake. At the time, the overwhelming majority of photojournalists used either Nikon or Canon cameras. I decided that if I was serious about photography, I should invest in professional equipment.
I traded away most of my Pentax and Ricoh gear and began buying Nikon.
In hindsight, I have to confess that insecurity may have played a role in the decision. Fake it until you make it: Have the right gear, look the part, and maybe people will take you seriously. The Nikons, a nice camera bag, a Fujifilm photographer's vest... all that equipment made me feel like a real photographer.
There was just one problem: The Nikons did not help me take better photos.
I constantly found myself struggling to remember how to operate various features. My main Nikon was heavier and bulkier than my previous cameras, and it didn't help that I had to send it in for repair twice within the first six months. It never felt familiar; even after a year, I couldn't escape the feeling that I was using someone else's camera. On top of that, I couldn't detect any difference in quality between shots taken with the Nikons and shots taken with my older cameras. In the back of my mind an insistent little voice began whispering: I don't like this gear.
Still, I couldn't let go of the idea that being taken seriously as a photographer meant that I had to look and act and work just like other photographers.
The first serious dent in that mindset came from a friend whose skill as a photographer far surpassed my own. He, too, used Nikon gear, but he'd purchased a beautiful little point-and-shoot camera: The Olympus Stylus. At one point, he mentioned that he no longer felt the need to carry his large, heavy Nikon at all times. "For most of what I'm shooting, the pictures from Olympus are just as good as the ones from my Nikon." Yes, the little Olympus had limitations that the SLR didn't have, but he had spoken the blasphemous words: Most of the time those limitations didn't matter. His offhand remark had planted the seeds of a more pragmatic mindset. Does it really matter that your car can't go 130 miles an hour if you do all your driving on highways where the speed limit is 65?
The shift from an analog world to a digital world, meanwhile, was changing the game. More and more, I found myself taking photos with the goal of posting them online. In the early days of the web, technical limitations meant that there was little point in uploading high-resolution photos: When most computers had a screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels, why bother uploading a photo that was larger? Moreover, it became clear that the quality of digital images would soon overtake film. Additionally, sophisticated electronics within the cameras meant that difficult shots were becoming far easier to capture. By the early 2000s, I still carried my 35mm gear when I was traveling, but it was clear that the days of film were coming to an end.
I decided to purchase a better digital camera. Instead of purchasing a digital SLR, however, I bought a Lumix with a built-in Leica zoom. I loved it. It was smaller and lighter than the SLRs, and less expensive. It wasn't a professional camera, but that didn't matter: It took great photos. It was easy to use, and it worked well for me.
That phrase -- it worked well for me -- cuts to the heart of the matter. Would an SLR with interchangeable lenses have given me better photos? Now and then, in certain situations, yes. But those rare occasions weren't enough to justify spending far more money and carrying around extra equipment.
There's an old saying among photographers: The best camera is the one you have with you. Today, the cameras in our phones are capable of effortlessly capturing high-quality images that would have been almost impossible to achieve decades ago. As much as I love my old Lumix, the simple truth is that the phone in my pocket takes better photos in most situations. The phone is my best camera because I always have it with me, and its ease of use lets me quickly capture the photos I want.
If you have an interest in photography, it's worthwhile to ask yourself about the nature of that interest. For some people, the appeal lies in achieving technical mastery: They enjoy the intricacies of complicated equipment. For other people, it's only the end result -- the photo itself -- that matters.
Think about what you want, and use the gear that works for you. Don't be swayed by preconceived notions about the kind of equipment you're supposed to use. Use the gear that allows you to have the experience you want to have. Use the gear that helps you achieve the results you want to achieve.
We allow ourselves to be manipulated by images. I don't mean the images that we capture with our cameras. I mean the image of a professional photographer, sold to us by film and TV and advertising. My point, ironically, is best summarized by an advertising campaign from many years ago.
Back in the early 1980s, Honda began running ads for their motorcycles featuring the slogan: "Follow the leader... He's on a Honda." Yamaha promptly responded with their own campaign. Their slogan? "Don't follow anyone."
Don't follow anyone. Choose your own gear, pick your own path, work your own way. Don't worry about whether or not you're using the equipment that other people think you ought to use. Don't worry about whether or not you look the part. If you take an exceptional photo, people will remember it. They will not remember whether or not you looked like a photographer when you took it.

Founder’s day was rocked by a swirling green mist that brought a frenzy to the crowd and started a riot targeting Mayor Jonathan Dorca who has since gone into protective custody on the property. Doctors at Opulence General were quick to determine that supernatural residents have, for the moment, lost their powers, while humans have gained a series of their own. While nothing seems to have made people specifically ill some residents have had an unfortunate reaction. One such resident, Yashica Anand, was admitted with companion Layne Baudelaire who seemed to be suffering from a case of heat exhaustion due to her own abilities. Miss Anand is still presently unconscious but breathing on her own, doctors continue to monitor her condition and hope to determine what ability has rendered her unconscious to help the woman wake.
Residents have turned to the city council to make decisions and investigate these events and they seem more proactive than the mayor. No curfew has been instated however they agree with residents this likely has to do with the previous years events and the investigation and manhunt for the perpetrator is being re-opened. As such residents are to report any unusual occurrences and if any are suffering from hunger, dehydration, or worse, the hospital is open to assist.
We will update you more as information arrives.
Thread is presently UNEDITTED.

The weather seemed to have started to calm by the time the Baudelaire's and their companions made their way to the empty picnic tables. A few loiters remained but certainly the place was mostly void, unlike the stage area that was crowded awaiting the mayor's speech. Perhaps things would improve.
[5:22 PM]
Yash was still flushing as she laid out the food Matty had got for them all, trying to find the cutlery within the bags even though she knew she'd just end up using her fingers to eat like she always did at home. "This all looks so good," she insisted with a smile to the family she was with.
em | rose & theo — Today at 5:33 PM
Theo finished his water bottle and was looking at all the food, wishing he didn’t have so much of everything since he arrived earlier today. He would’ve kept some space if he knew he was going to regroup with his family, well…He knew, but kinda got distracted as always. "I might steal some bites! Even if i’m apparently not allowed!"
missa || layne + hal — Today at 5:35 PM
"We would never let you go hungry Theo!" she smiled passing the various items Matty picked up for them. "So, are you just going to completely ignore me about my previous question Theo? You've got to enlighten us!"
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 5:37 PM
"A friend or a friend?" Yash reminded Theo, giving him some wriggling eyebrows, in case he had forgotten. Once everything was laid out she took a seat at the picnic table and began to pick up what looked good with her fingers, immediately covered in sauce but the woman not caring. (edited)
em | rose & theo — Today at 5:42 PM
"That’s why you’re my favorite." He said to Layne, but only took one bite of something random. He really wasn’t about to go hungry. He looked at the two girls, feeling his face heat up from the questions even if it was still a bit cold. "Wouldn’t you like to know?" He said with a little smile, he was pretty private even if he seemed to be an open book.
missa || layne + hal — Today at 5:46 PM
"See! Yes, Yash has the right idea here," she chuckled, dipping some fries into the ketchup. Watching her brother's reaction made her smile. Whoever it was, she hope it was promising. Theo needed some light in his life. "I mean, yes. It's why we'e asking. I'm not privy to the happenings of the world as of late. So come on!"
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 5:49 PM
"Who is the who that might be your friend?" Yash asked since she didn't even have a clue who they were speaking of. Theo was handsome though, and sweet as could be, they'd actually been in school together in the same year but Yash was never quite sure if Theo remembered that or not. "Are they in your new pack?" she asked, hopeful this maybe would allow for them all to see how Theo was doing regarding it.
em | rose & theo — Today at 6:01 PM
"Okay, okay, there is someone, but I don’t kiss and tell." He said and then his eyes went wide as he realized what he just said. "Well, it’s a figure of speech, but i’m not trying to go all crazy Theo and hurt again, so it’s probably nothing." He said as he took some fries as well. "Yash, you might remember how I was with girls in high school?" He did remember and didn’t know if she remembered how he was always the one doing big declarations of love in the hallway.
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 6:05 PM
It stung Yash to hear that Theo was afraid of being hurt but all things considered, to be divorced so young to someone who abandoned him, it made sense, the young woman looking down at her food so her face did not give away too much sympathy. "I thought you were romantic," she insisted, because she did. It was the sort of thing most of the girls, and a lot of the boys, in their class dreamed of happening to them. "I was probably too timid for that sort of thing," she reasoned, very grateful her boyfriend had not done any of those things, but... "Most people wished you had a crush on them. This person probably does too, right?" Yash looked to his siblings to back her up.
missa || layne + hal — Today at 6:14 PM
"Hey! You're worthy of love and someone to reciprocate that to you ten folds, you hear me? Everyone at this table is." Layne was far from being a big romantic. It was usually Oliver that was the one to put that on display, but more recently, Layne had become more affectionate herself. "You're a fucking catch and yes, I agree with Yash. Anybody would be damn lucky to be crushed on by you."
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 6:17 PM
"Let the poor boy eat his food," Matty joked lightly and playfully gave his brother a glance paired with wink. "We all know he's a stud, he doesn't need reminding."
em | rose & theo — Today at 6:20 PM
"You’re exaggerating." He said to Yash, shaking his head. He was glad to know everyone didn’t think he was too much, but he didn’t believe that most were crushing on him. He smiled to Layne, happy to hear those words and then laughed at Matty. "Thank you, so anyways, how was everyone’s day?"
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 6:21 PM
Crackling came over the radio, the sounds of those who were by the stage static sort of noise as they waited for the mayor to take the stage. With the weather good, at least from their stand point things were probably fine.
[6:22 PM]
"No, I'm not," she insisted, because she genuinely believed it to be true. "I would have had a crush on you if my boyfriend wasn't so handsome." While she had been unsure at times if Theo remembered her she was sure he remembered her boyfriend, sweet looking but certainly handsome, and kind the way that Theo was. "Layne and I mostly listened to the music," she lied, eyes moving to Matthew. They'd talked about Roman a little but she didn't want to bring the energy down.
missa || layne + hal — Today at 6:37 PM
"It's super nice to be out. And yes, Yash and I caught up and had some good conversation and listened to different performances out on the field," she nodded in agreement. It was just nice to see the community out together, celebrating. Although Layne as a mere human didn't have the same investment as others may had with Founder's day, it was still nice to be in support of one another.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 6:39 PM
Matthew had started eating his own food and nodded nonchalantly as they described what they'd done so far. "I wanted to watch but I got caught up with an old client. Just catching up," he added on so none of them thought he'd been bloodletting at the carnival.

"He was, I don’t blame you." He did remember him, he had a good memory and the town wasn’t too big. "Seem like you had fun." He said to the girls and then frowned looking at his brother. "I think you’re all interrogating the wrong guy."
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 6:46 PM
Suddenly, it was no longer crackling, the sound of applause could be heard, still static in it's sound as it came over old speakers but it lead into actual audio. "This land was once home to a monster, a monster that fought us off one at a time as various species, even humans, tried to take - tried to take it for it's own," the large faerie male uttered, eyes watching the skies, looking at the weather. "But coming together we were able to defeat it, to take it down and to see the benefits of coming together, in protecting one another. I was not a member of this town, and was not for another few centuries so I welcome up to the stage, Rankle Harbinger the Second, to those who are not fae, you may know him as Rainier. Son to Rankle Harbinger the First, one of our towns original founders." There was a pause, more clapping following the mayors words.
[6:48 PM]
Yash didn't really talk to Matty much about those things, it wasn't out of judgement but it was technically his job and privacy sort of came with that, the same way it did with the dancers at the club. Besides... "Matty's taking a break, he probably just said hi, he'd probably be more exhausted otherwise, though...you should still eat, we don't need you passing out on us if you did do anything."
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 6:51 PM
"I was just saying hi," Matthew confirmed and made a show of taking a big bite out of his food regardless, swallowing it down with a gulp of water. "And I actually quit or resigned, I guess, is the official term," he said as he wiped his fingers on a napkin. "So no need to interrogate me."
em | rose & theo — Today at 6:54 PM
"Alright, I was just saying. Hope you had fun catching up." He liked to be annoying, but he trusted him enough to assume he was saying the truth. He turned a bit to try and watch the speech, but he was still half listening to their conversation.
missa || layne + hal — Today at 6:56 PM
"I'm sorry, what am I missing here because it's totally going over my brain." They said it was pregnancy brain, but Layne had been zoning out more and more recently, finding it harder to concentrate than before. "Who'd you say hi to?" she asked Matty.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 6:59 PM
"Just someone I used to work with," Matthew explained to Layne briefly.
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 6:59 PM
Once again the speakers began to crackle as the speaker for the evening took to the stage. "When my father used to give these speeches he would always speak on the beast, of what it had taken to defeat the monster. As he aged the stories became less and less about the truth, I suspect, and more and more about entertaining the town. He loved this town, more than anything, it had not only been a safe place for himself, but for my Mother, who had needed one desperately. So rather than telling you of a monster that longer exists, I think it is best that we speak on what this town has been through, that while our safety has not felt assured, our loyalty to one another has remained stedfast and strong. The leaders of this town are not on this stage, they are amongst you, even those of you who may not feel like one, or hold such a title, are capable of inspiring trust, determination, and security in the face of an unknown presence of danger, even now as the weather brings about our nerves we stand beside those who mean everything to us and know we will -" The audio however seemed to cut, as his words had been spoken a fine rolling mist slowly descended, so thin at first it was hardly noticed, the worrying wind calming to near nothing as if the fog itself was sneaking up on them until it was all around them and everything felt damp with it, it could be felt over skin and settling over hair and inhaled with every breath, heavy in the lungs like it was filled with more than just water vapor though it appeared to be entirely normal. It was not. Difficult to tell its color at first but once concentrated it was obviously a bright green and every breath and second it spent touching skin and inhaled it worked its magic, stealing strength and dispersing it elsewhere with every mingling exhale.
[7:00 PM]
Yash had food between her fingers, laughing as all seemed to accuse Matty of using his spare time to do something he had given up. But the laughter faded and the food between her fingers fell as Yash's vision seemed to fall away. "Matty," Yash whispered over the speech that was coming over the speakers. Her nerves rising because the lights of the carnival disappeared from the corners of her eyes, vision beginning to tunnel. "Matty, I can't -" unable to see the green mist approaching. (edited)
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 7:03 PM
Matthew glanced over at Yash when she said his name, hard to hear over the loudspeakers but they caught each other's gaze and for a second he just stared at her with a questioning expression and only when the food started to fall from her hands did he get up and move toward her, "What is it? Yash?" He was good at keeping the panic out of his voice, quickly putting his arm around her shoulders, thinking maybe she was going to have a panic attack because it was getting darker but there were still lights all around so it must be something else and he was too focused on her now to notice the green fog.
em | rose & theo — Today at 7:06 PM
Theo was smiling while listening to the speech. He thought it was pretty inspiring, but suddenly his smile dropped and he started looking around. He felt like something was really wrong, but he couldn’t tell what exactly until the feeling left him as the fog appeared. He quickly stood and joined his sister to make sure he could protect her. "What’s going on Yash?"
missa || layne + hal — Today at 7:06 PM
Layne was in the middle of shooting Oliver a text, indicating that she'd be home probably within the next two hours, when she noticed Matty getting out of his seat. "Hey, what's wrong?" she looked up seeing a panicked look on Yash's face. "Hey, you okay? Do you need some water?"
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 7:11 PM
Yash could feel his arm around her shoulders, but no part of her could see him as her vision continued to tunnel, making everything dark, eyes glazing over with a green similar to the mist on the ground, covering the whites of her eyes and the brilliant brown of her eyes that flecked with natural warmth typically in the light, all that were left were her pupils. She could see only her fingers now as panic flooded her. She felt strong, but fear overpowered that physical strength making her shake. "Matty, I can't see, everything's dark," she insisted, tears sitting on her lash line over eyes that were no longer her own.
The mist continued to rise of course and the sound over the static speakers came with an announcement from the Mayor "We will work out what is going on!" Before muffled screams replaced his words. "Liar!" It was repeated beneath screams, people who had flocked to the stage now trying to get away from it, rushing past their picnic table and others.
missa || layne + hal — Today at 7:14 PM
"What the hell is going on?" she looked over towards the stage, finally seeing the mist swarm those by the stage. "We should go," she said looking over to her brothers. "Matty you get Yash. We can go to my place." However, as Layne started to rise she felt a big wave of heat pass over her, before sitting back down. "I don't feel well all of a sudden," she said letting out a deep breath.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 7:16 PM
Matthew's brain was racing, trying to figure out what had happened, nothing seemed to have changed except...green? Matthew looked at the green that started to invade into Yash's eyes and then noticed a green mist had started to surround them and as he inhaled deep panicked breaths he started to feel something surge within him but he pushed all thought of that to the side. "You're okay, Yash, I'm still here. Theo and Layne are still here. We're at the carnival still," detailing it all since she said she couldn't see it, "You're okay," and then he turned to Theo only to get distracted by now Layne feeling faint and he couldn't reach out to both Layne and Yash so he kept a tight hold of Yash so she didn't feel afraid if he let go and whispered harshly to his brother, "We need an ambulance." he didn't know what was happening but it was way over both of their heads.
em | rose & theo — Today at 7:20 PM
Theo quickly nodded. Usually he would be rushing in the crowd, trying to help, but right now all he could focus on was keeping his own family safe. He made sure Layne wouldn’t fall backwards and then exchanged a quick look with his brother. "I don’t know if they’re gonna get to us quickly…We should get to my car." He suggested since everyone was literally panicking around them.
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 7:23 PM
Yash’s vision disappeared before her eyes entirely, clear tears starting to fall down her cheeks. "I'm scared," she whispered but it didn’t matter, of course. His words did not matter either, and though her gaze did seem to lift in search of Theo and Layne, able to hear the distress of his siblings, that too did not matter. Yash’s lashes began to flutter, the lights around them bursting, each sign for the various food trucks burst, the string lights flickered out, and wind seemed to gush out the fires of the outdoor heaters, leaving the group with only the moon and the stars to light their space. With that the woman went limp in her friends arms and her mind fell into itself. No longer conscious, though breath escaped her lips, Yash was gone.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 7:29 PM
"Yash?" Her body went limp and Matthew had to catch her with both his arms, she was surprisingly light, he thought as he held her up. "Theo?" He blinked hard, against the worry that tried to crumble him, "Keys. Move," and spoke against the fast forming lump in his throat. Matthew scooped Yash up by the back of her legs and carried her, "Theo, help Layne," his voice was strained as he started to walk in a fast pace toward the parking lot and all the while he kept muttering to Yash, "It's okay, just rest, you'll be okay, we're leaving now. You're okay. You're okay. Almost at the car now, you'll be okay."
missa || layne + hal — Today at 7:31 PM
"I feel like I'm burning," Layne muttered to Theo as she took a hold of her brother's arm. Not one to panic in high pressure situations, she was trying her best to keep her composure while the world was falling apart around them. There was something incredibly wrong and they needed to get the hell out of here. "Oh my gosh, Yash," Layne called out, as she turned around for a moment watching Matty, incredibly alarmed by the woman's sudden symptoms. If she went down that quickly, what did it mean for her? "Fuck," he said trying her best to quicken her pace. "You're fine right?" she asked looking at Theo with concern.
em | rose & theo — Today at 7:35 PM
"Yes, yes!" He was worried, but he didn’t show it, keeping his calm so he would be in control of the situation. "You’re gonna be okay Layne, I promise." He wrapped an arm around his sister and helped her up. He frowned, feeling like he was struggling a bit while these past months he could lift anything. That was strange…But he didn’t focus on that, too busy trying to keep up with Matty. "I think so, tell me what you’re feeling Layne." He said, he needed to know so he could help.
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 7:38 PM
Others were rushing, the static yells over the speakers still occurring but everyone was trying to leave, to get away from the town center. However, as they all moved, it was clear the green mist was everywhere, not thinning out anywhere. Theo had certainly been right though, it would take a lot for an ambulance to push through the mess, best to try themselves, especially with who Theo was and the condition of both Layne and Yash, no one would fault them for not taking the roads.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 7:40 PM
Matthew reached the car first, he hadn't even realized he'd been walking that fast but he'd reached it way before Theo and Layne so he shouted back at his brother, "Keys, Theo!"
missa || layne + hal — Today at 7:43 PM
Layne could sense something was off Theo but she couldn't quite pinpoint it. How was Matty moving that much faster than him? Granted he was doing his best to keep her safe as they made their way through the hectic crowd. "Theo it's everywhere," she said. You couldn't look anywhere and not see green. The screams and the panic was starting to get to her and Layne was gradually become more overwhelmed. "Wait, I need a second," she said holding her brother back for a minute to catch her breath. "I feel like I'm in a sauna." Which was completely not how she felt no more than thirty minutes ago with the wind. (edited)
em | rose & theo — Today at 7:48 PM
When he heard his brother, he realized how far he was compared to him. He usually would’ve made sure to get his sister there as quickly as possible, now he almost felt tired, almost. He struggled to grab his keys and threw them at Matty. "I know, it’s gonna be okay." He said even if he had no way of knowing. He stopped running and kept his eyes on her, clearly worried. He touched her forehead with his hand and quickly had to remove it. "You’re burning Layne…Were you feeling like this all day?" He still was thinking of a logical explanation, a fever of some kind.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 7:57 PM
Matthew couldn't catch the keys and keep holding Yash so he had to release his hold on her a bit, lowering her down by her legs as he leaned down to pick up the keys were they had landed, still holding her firmly against him. He unlocked the doors and got her in the driver's passenger seat, fastening her seatbelt with a click and taking a moment to brush back her hair that had fallen in front of her face from the movement. He shut the door and looked back at his siblings. Still a ways back. He swore under his breath and jogged toward them, almost tripping over his feet when he was suddenly in front of them, having reached them a lot faster than he'd realized so he almost ran past them. It was weird but he didn't linger on it. "Layne, are you okay? What's happening?" He put his arm around her to help support her weight and help bring her to the car and looked to Theo with worry. "What's wrong?" Because even Theo didn't seem like himself. It didn't make sense that he had reached the car before either of them when he was carrying Yash. None of it was making sense.
missa || layne + hal — Today at 8:02 PM
"I've been fine all day." Layne had been making sure she was doing her due diligence not to push herself after she'd been place on bedrest. This was the mot activity she'd done all week, but even then she was moderating herself. Layne had felt rather cool with the temperature dropping and sudden wind. She had even had Yash grab them some blankets. "Something's wrong," she said shaking her head as she alllowed both he brothers taken her to the care. Fear started to consume her and she was now even more worried about her state of health and that of the baby. "There's water in your car right Theo?" Layne panted lightly. She didn't need to be another person who passed out on her brothers. "Did Yash come to?"
em | rose & theo — Today at 8:08 PM
"Layne is heating up." He explained, not worrying about himself in the moment. He still didn’t understand how Matty was so fast while he felt so weak. They got to the car and he nodded, leaving Layne with their brother as he went to open his trunk to get his medkit and water bottles. "Matty, you’re driving." He decided so he could take care of the girls until they got to the hospital.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 8:13 PM
“Yash is in the car already,” Matthew replied to Layne, casting another concerned look to Theo since it seemed like Layne was experiencing more brain fog than what should be considered normal. He didn’t need to be told twice and got into the driver’s seat, quickly checking to make sure everyone was secure and made sure to check the mirror’s so he didn’t accidentally run someone over as he maneuvered out of the parking lot, so many other people rushing to their cars to quickly leave as well but luckily since they had been further from the stage seemed to get out before they could get blocked in by all the cars. “Yash is nonresponsive,” he said through gritted teeth, fists tight against the steering wheel, speaking to Theo as if he could do something about it. He could feel himself panicking so he ground down on his teeth and inhaled deeply, refocusing on the road and getting them to the nearest hospital as quickly as he could, not caring about traffic lights.
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 8:15 PM
Matty was right, Yash was breathing but that was about it, her half open eyes showed a foggy hue to them but for all accounts she seemed to be sleeping, unaware of her surroundings.

Feeling ever so light-heated, she was disheartened to hear that Yas hadn't woken up. Layne's hope was that if she was in an enclosed space whatever they had been breathing in would clear through their systems. "She's gonna be okay Matty," Layne mustered as she took a water bottle from her brother, downing it in seconds, like he'd done prior no more than twenty minutes ago. "Can you turn the AC up please?" she asked, taking another water bottle and holding it firm against her forehead.

Theo got in the car and focused his attention on Yash. For now his sister seemed fine, it was normal for a pregnant woman to feel hotter than others and she would get the help she needed at the hospital. He had to think positively. He made sure Yash was breathing normally, that was at least a bit reassuring. "What was that back there?" He asked his siblings as he checked Yash’s eyes.

Matthew responded by punching his fingers against the center console until the air conditioning turned on full blast. “I don’t know. Something happened. Something in that mist, it has to be. Her eyes turned green. Her eyes aren’t supposed to be green.”

All she could do was think about all the helpless people calling out for one another. It was constantly on replay as her brother quickly drove through the streets. One minute they were laughing and enjoying each other's company. The next? Pure pandemonium. "It just came out of nowhere. It doesn't make sense." Feeling a sharp twinge in her abdominal wall, she winced at the harsh kick in her stomach. "Matty, how much longer?" (edited)

While there were a myriad of cars on the road, most were actually not headed in the direction of the hospital, rather they seemed directed towards residential areas, people wishing to go home to handle whatever this was. An indication that, at the very least, what was happening to Yashica was abnormal, and what was happening with Layne would perhaps not be so concerning if not for her pregnancy. Most had not been calling for help, so much as angry at the mayor for his lies.

Theo felt like all he could do at this point was making sure Yash kept breathing as he kept his eyes on his sister, not really focused on anything else. "I don’t understand…Do you feel different Matty?"
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 8:39 PM
"No, I don't," though that wasn't entirely true except he couldn't pinpoint what it was right now, his mind was racing, his heart was pounding but all that could be the adrenaline and shock of the situation. Not yet fully realizing just how much faster and stronger he was now. With his fast driving and thankfully not as many cars on the road as he had thought there might be, they soon reached the hospital and Matthew pulled up in front of the emergency doors, quickly shifting the car into park and by the time his seatbelt was recoiling back into the car he was already at the passenger side door, opening it up and unfastening Yash's seatbelt to pick her up, once again, not realizing how fast he was moving.

Before Layne could even blink Matty was out the door and had already retrieved Yash. As he stormed into the emergency room with Yash in his arms. "Did you see that?" she looked over rather quizically to Theo. "I know I'm a little dazed right now but when did Matty become the Flash?"
em | rose & theo — Today at 8:44 PM
"I thought- Okay." He dropped it, they would have plenty more time to talk about this another time when both the girls would be safe. He got out the car and then helped his sister, but nodded when she spoke. "I don’t know, it’s strange. Even before he got to the car so quickly!"

"Make sure he's okay, yeah?" As they walked in Layne quickly reached for a wheelchair, feeling remnants of the sharp shooting pains she had felt before. Clutching her abdomen she took some deep breaths. "Fuck." There's no way se could be having contractions right now. This was too early. "Theo, can you call Ollie? And find me some more water?" She felt like she needed a gallon to cool her down. (edited)

Matthew burst into the emergency room with Yash in his arms, immediately calling out for any nurses or doctors, “Help! I need help! My friend, she just dropped, I don’t know what happened. She was fine and then she wasn’t,” a few nurses at the reception area came to his side quickly and Matthew just kept talking, “My sister, she’s pregnant, she’s outside, she’s got a fever,” maybe it wasn’t a fever, “someone needs to help her,” one of the nurses stayed with Matthew while the other rushed toward the doors and met with Layne and Theo. He wasn’t sure when but a gurney appeared and they were encouraging him to let go of Yash, oddly part of him didn’t want to, he hesitated before eventually releasing her and lowering her carefully onto the hospital bed.

The doctors, nurses and other hospital staff had themselves noticed a shift, weak where they were once strong and strong where they had once been weak, but it was not enough to stop them from doing their jobs. Making sure to adjust who was doing what based on how each were feeling. "Are you human or supernatural? What is your friend?" one of the doctors asked Matty as other registered nurses rushed out the door to his sister and brother.
em | rose & theo — Today at 8:57 PM
He told the nurse everything he possibly could tell them about Layne, from her pregnancy to any allergies even if she was there and very conscious next to him. It seemed to be just a little fever, but he was really worried and he wanted them to do everything they could for her. "I’ll be right back with water, i’ll go call Oliver, you take good care of her." He said to the nurse, almost in a threatening way. He would definitely regret his tone later.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 8:57 PM
“Human,” Matthew said, his brain felt like it was lagging behind his mouth, “We’re both human.”
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 8:59 PM
Like Matthew had been asked, Layne too was asked if she was human or supernatural. It seemed an oddly pressing question but not peculiar considering it would affect how everyone was treated. Once answered, an explanation to both Matty and Layne was given, that humans were experiencing bursts of power and that likely anything going on was unlikely to harm them but they would conduct tests to determine what powers they had attained if they felt as though whatever was going on was potentially harming them, in Layne's case because of her preeclampsia they certainly would be taking her to a room to conduct things, and Yashica's lack of consciousness meant she too would need tests done. Like his siblings had, the nurse asked Matty if he felt okay.

Layne was incredibly dumfounded by the revelation. It now made sense why Matty was acting the way in which he did. They now had acquired some powers from this sudden event? She already had enough on her plate as is and now she had to figure this out too? Looking over at Matty, before they took her back she confirmed with him one. "We're gonna be okay," she nodded. They had been all their lives and this would be no different.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 9:03 PM
"I'm fine," Matthew replied quickly, "I don't need help. I need my sister and my friend to be okay, so please, help them, I don't need anything." He didn't feel any different, at least he still didn't think so. It must just be adrenaline. Matthew looked to Layne when she reassured him they'd be okay and he nodded, desperately hoping that was true.
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 9:09 PM
The nurses put Layne onto a stretcher, just to make sure she wasn't exerting herself, asking her questions and seeing if she wanted to wait for anyone to come back with her. Layne had her brothers, her father, her fiance and her Uncle, all would be welcome back once made aware of the situation, the pregnant woman had an endless supply of relatives who would care for her, but as the staff began to put Yash in a stretcher and they informed Matthew that as he was not a relative he could not come back with her, it was clear the same could not be said for the unconscious woman. "You should go with your sister, we will find your friends town records and see if she has an emergency contact," they assured him.

The only person she cared to have back with her was Ollie. She'd rather have everyone else check on her when she was discharged. However, she'd ask for Theo to join her while she waited for her diagnostics to be done. The intermittent contractions were still occurring and she still felt like she was inside a furnace. However, her mind also drifted to the lifeless Yash, hoping she would be okay.
kim|mars.matty.minji.val — Today at 9:20 PM
"No, no, I --" Matthew started to say in protest but he bit his tongue, torn between wanting to be there for Yash, knowing she didn't have any relatives in town, and wanting to be there for his sister. "You need to let me see her. She doesn't have any relatives in town," he pleaded with the nurse. "She's-- my--- fiancee," he lied, pathetically, having already called her his friend a few times now.
em | rose & theo — Today at 9:25 PM
Theo called Oliver and then went to grab a bottle of water even if he knew the nurses could get his sister one. He started running back to Layne when he heard his brother’s lie as he ran past him. He frowned, clearly too gullible to realize it wasn’t true, but decided they could talk about it later since Layne was now all alone. (edited)
Paris || BellaYashSofiaRankleCel — Today at 9:30 PM
The nurse was not nearly so gullible as his brother was. "What is her name? We'll try and find her file, but you need to wait here while we do," they informed him, a sternness because obviously they couldn't just let anyone back there, even if he was the one who brought her in.
For Layne they tried to determine if the contractions were legitimate or stress related, and began to find ways to cool her down. Unfortunately however, as this was an Opulence given power, the only thing that would help Layne cool herself was...herself. The nurses suggesting they find a specialist who would help her through accessing whatever was going on with her, suggesting her brother be the one to hold the cooling pack to her so other's could work around them to make sure the baby was okay.
