i stopped watching toh at “eclipse lake”/“yesterday’s lie” last year; started rewatching a couple days ago, and just caught back up, and—

after the quest, i smugly ran straight for where capote and lamina used to stand around and found capote in one of those coffee rooms
to my surprise, he was very humbled by the experience?! i’m glad that he’s reflecting on himself! usually i kinda feel bad for my choice in these side quests, but i like this ending! 👍

Caleb hasn't dated in the past, but he was in love when he was 18. A first love! He was always weird, but they unintentionally made him a lot worse. Also, I don't know I've confirmed this before or not, but Caleb isn't a virgin.
They were the first one who got him to confess his unconventional desires. A close friend who turned out to be the budding sadist to his masochism. Unlike now, he didn't tell it to just about anyone. Their dynamic was much more of a sexual than a romantic one, calling each others friends while experimenting. Neither of them knew what they were doing, and Caleb is very prone to sub drop, which he Caleb was left to work through all on his own.
It's a classic tale, really: Caleb caught feelings, and they didn't. They weren't looking for a relationship, and since he hadn't been clear about his feelings until he'd fallen hard, the miscommunication never got cleared up. Until he gathered the courage to confess. Caleb was so broken about it that it made every possible interaction uncomfortable, and they ended up drifting apart. He cried. A lot. And ended up regretting just letting them go so easily, he felt so empty afterwards.
It definitely drove home the idea that he's undateable. That letting himself be used is the only thing he's good for. If that's the case, shouldn't he show that part of himself off? (Really, he's just chasing the high of being hurt by someone he loves.) He's basically over them at this point, and wouldn't see a new crush as a replacement for them, but he's not making the same mistake twice. His obsession comes from a place of insecurity.

I loved Luca so much but one thing I don’t see anyone talking about is the fact that Giulia is the first Disney girl I’ve seen who has a big, hooked nose and isn’t an antagonist!!! I wish my younger self who was self conscious about her big nose could have seen that and I hope there will be much more good-aligned female characters with big noses in the future because I never want to see another little girl think she’s ugly because she doesn’t have a button nose
